I ordered this game, and got it today. It is not discountinued, and it is REAL! Its the best value for any Dark Age Player! All 3 games for less then what the 2 expansions would cost you. A+++ package!

Great game, but not much in the box

After doing far too much online research about which MMORPG game to play, I finally went with DaoC. Imagine my surprise when I found the Platinum edition contained all the expansions rolled into one!

I'm not going to delve into the game much here. Suffice it to say that the learning curve for a newbie who prefers to solo is fairly high, but after a couple hours of sweating through the interface, you should start to get the hang of it. I'm currently a Sylvan Animist on Bors, and am enjoying it.

The off-the-shelf package, however, leaves MUCH to be desired. All expansions are present, but the documentation is severely lacking. The newbie guide covers little more than the absolute basics. The users manual covers general aspects of the game, but nevers gets into specifics. For example:

- no maps. This world is huge -- most of my time is spent wandering lost in the vast wildnerness. You must visit websites and find maps on the various DaoC there.

- no description of skills/spells/weapons/etc. Again, you need to visit DaoC websites for any of it. I have no idea what half the stats are when I right-click an item. Not covered in the docs. There are no descriptions of the spells I have access to. Not covered in the docs.

All the information you need IS available, but you will not fing it in the box. I'm seriously considering buying the Gold edition just to get a map and perhaps better documentation.

$30 for recycled software, coupled with a monthly fee, leaves a bad first impression. A detailed map included in the package, with a chart of abilities on the flipside, would have made this a truly newbie-friendly purchase.

Best MMPORPG on the Market

Having played just about every online game out there, I keep coming back to DAoC for it's RvR gameplay, stability, and depth. Simply put: it's the best of what is available.

Bottomless pit of time and money

You'll enjoy this game up to a high level, until the true guile sets in. You'll then realize that you are REQUIRED to own 2-3+ accounts to enjoy the game. Everyone in the player-vs-player setting uses a "bot" to strengthen their characters, as the highest buffing cleric/healer/whatnot, and then parks them safely out of harms way. This leads to many one-hit kills from stealthing players (roughly 60% of the population, and it's easy to see why.) Steer clear.

Avoid like the plague

If you think you'll jump in and enjoy DAOC, think again. This will take you around 12-14 months to actually get to a point you'll make a difference. And along the way, the view/fighting/spells/etc are sub-par. Don't even get started on Trials of Atlantis, which you will need to finish but, no one will help you and you *cannot* solo any of the Master Levels and many need huge numbers of groups. Avoid this one.

Best MMORPG out there

Unless you have friends already in the game it will take you several months to get to level 50(the maximum char level), but its well worth it. Yes the Trials of Atlantis are a bit tough and most people are already through them, but on my server they are still actively done by groups almost nightly. The RvR portion of the game is nothing short of AWSOME, yes several players have bots, but its not too hard to find someone to buff you up as well. Definately the most balanced PvP of any game out there in my opinion. Mythic entertainment continually makes adjustments to the PvP based on player feedback and testing to keep it as fair and balanced as possible. With the release of New Frontiers free expansion RvR has gotten even better! The new seige engines and tower and keep setups are very nice. Great Job Mythic.. keep it up.

Great on-line game

This game requires a lot of time and patience but is well worth the effort. I have 2 accounts and play an average of 20 hours a week. It is great fun and a great way to meet people from all over the country. Mythic continues to upgrade all the time to keep the game fair and balanced. The new Catacombs version is due out soon and will make it more solo player friendly. The new graphics update coming out with the Catacombs is spectacular. People will be very pleased with the new updated graphics engine. You will love this game. Only drawback is that it is very addictive. Once you get hooked on the game it will be very hard not to want to play it 24-7.

Game peaked before Trials of Atlantis

I've played Dark Age of Camelot since Feb 02 owning 3 accounts, 2 level 50 and 3 more level 40ish chars. This game was excellent and the best MMORPG out there until Trials of Atlantis. From that point the timesinks became ridculous and with the new fronteirs expansion the game has spiraled out of control. The grind was originally levels 1-50 and then build your characters equipment template. Now, it takes all of that but your equipment must now be attained, activated and leveled which takes a long time, if not longer then getting your character to level 50. Then you have the Master Levels which can be 12-14 hour single sessions to get one Master Level completed and there are 10. Leveling some artifacts can take 40 game play hours to level just one of them up. Now, the game is facing severe population issues because no one will try a new realm because it would take a year of playing to be able to compete. (less obviously for people who play 24x7)

This game had always provided a stable, safe opt-in version of realm versus realm combat which was the main draw of the game - and LOTS of fun! but Mythic lost sight of that, blew the timesinks through the roof and the game is suffering terribly because of that.

Many of us long for the DAoC that existed the year before the Trials of Atlantis expansion! The level of work neccessary used to somehwat match the reward and fun of the end game RvR - now the work is 2-3 times that and many don't find the return on investment to be worth it anymore.

Dark Age of Camelot Review

I have been playing DAoC for the past 2 years. I have 2 level 50's characters and 3 almost 50. ToA has been changed and does not hurt the game. The leveling of artifacts has been made extremely easyer. The leveling of characters also has been made easyer by getting 1 FREE level every 3 days so long as you have leveled once through xp within those 3 days. New Frontiers is not all bad like people say. I like it more than OF(Old Frontiers) because it brought balance to the realm ablities and made it so that rvr has more strategy. As for population imbalence problems, those also have been fixed because Albion (the overpoulated realm on all servers) has a 7 day free level timer instead of a 3 day. Also on that note hibernia and midgard get a bonus to all xp and realmpoints earned. I hope everyone plays the game and if you decide to go on Galahad server in Albion and send Misformed (me) a tell. :)
