Game peaked before Trials of Atlantis

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 13 / 14

I've played Dark Age of Camelot since Feb 02 owning 3 accounts, 2 level 50 and 3 more level 40ish chars. This game was excellent and the best MMORPG out there until Trials of Atlantis. From that point the timesinks became ridculous and with the new fronteirs expansion the game has spiraled out of control. The grind was originally levels 1-50 and then build your characters equipment template. Now, it takes all of that but your equipment must now be attained, activated and leveled which takes a long time, if not longer then getting your character to level 50. Then you have the Master Levels which can be 12-14 hour single sessions to get one Master Level completed and there are 10. Leveling some artifacts can take 40 game play hours to level just one of them up. Now, the game is facing severe population issues because no one will try a new realm because it would take a year of playing to be able to compete. (less obviously for people who play 24x7)

This game had always provided a stable, safe opt-in version of realm versus realm combat which was the main draw of the game - and LOTS of fun! but Mythic lost sight of that, blew the timesinks through the roof and the game is suffering terribly because of that.

Many of us long for the DAoC that existed the year before the Trials of Atlantis expansion! The level of work neccessary used to somehwat match the reward and fun of the end game RvR - now the work is 2-3 times that and many don't find the return on investment to be worth it anymore.

Great game, but not much in the box

After doing far too much online research about which MMORPG game to play, I finally went with DaoC. Imagine my surprise when I found the Platinum edition contained all the expansions rolled into one!

I'm not going to delve into the game much here. Suffice it to say that the learning curve for a newbie who prefers to solo is fairly high, but after a couple hours of sweating through the interface, you should start to get the hang of it. I'm currently a Sylvan Animist on Bors, and am enjoying it.

The off-the-shelf package, however, leaves MUCH to be desired. All expansions are present, but the documentation is severely lacking. The newbie guide covers little more than the absolute basics. The users manual covers general aspects of the game, but nevers gets into specifics. For example:

- no maps. This world is huge -- most of my time is spent wandering lost in the vast wildnerness. You must visit websites and find maps on the various DaoC there.

- no description of skills/spells/weapons/etc. Again, you need to visit DaoC websites for any of it. I have no idea what half the stats are when I right-click an item. Not covered in the docs. There are no descriptions of the spells I have access to. Not covered in the docs.

All the information you need IS available, but you will not fing it in the box. I'm seriously considering buying the Gold edition just to get a map and perhaps better documentation.

$30 for recycled software, coupled with a monthly fee, leaves a bad first impression. A detailed map included in the package, with a chart of abilities on the flipside, would have made this a truly newbie-friendly purchase.

A Great Game, Too Often Slammed

I have played this game for about two & a half yrs and have enjoyed my time in game tremendously. Basics of the game involve establishing a fantasy character in 1 of 3 realms in the ancient British Isles. The game allows a character to focus on spending time battling monsters in their own realm, battling players in the other 2 realms, or becoming a crafter of items. You can spend as much or as little time as you want in the game and you can do any combination of the above activities. You also can join with other players to form guilds & alliances.

Many overly criticize that too much time is wasted in the "grind" of leveling a character to 50th or in obtaining items wanted to enhance a character's ability. They miss the point that the pleasure in the game is playing. If their only focus of the game is to become the best of a particular character class with the most realm points posted on the boards, they miss out on the essence of the game which is to explore a fantasy world with numerous dungeons and lands filled with monsters and quests to conquer. The realm vs realm aspect of Camelot is the best in the genre and the various level specific battlegrounds allow a character to have fun defending their realm at almost any level.

I have found that Mythic has been responsive to player feedback. They have made numerous modifications regarding artificat acquisition, realm inequity, class inequity, encounter glitches, etc.

Be careful in starting Dark Age of Camelot, as you may become addicted. I have have had many wonderful adventures in Camelot and made many on-line friends.

Great on-line game

This game requires a lot of time and patience but is well worth the effort. I have 2 accounts and play an average of 20 hours a week. It is great fun and a great way to meet people from all over the country. Mythic continues to upgrade all the time to keep the game fair and balanced. The new Catacombs version is due out soon and will make it more solo player friendly. The new graphics update coming out with the Catacombs is spectacular. People will be very pleased with the new updated graphics engine. You will love this game. Only drawback is that it is very addictive. Once you get hooked on the game it will be very hard not to want to play it 24-7.

Best MMORPG out there

Unless you have friends already in the game it will take you several months to get to level 50(the maximum char level), but its well worth it. Yes the Trials of Atlantis are a bit tough and most people are already through them, but on my server they are still actively done by groups almost nightly. The RvR portion of the game is nothing short of AWSOME, yes several players have bots, but its not too hard to find someone to buff you up as well. Definately the most balanced PvP of any game out there in my opinion. Mythic entertainment continually makes adjustments to the PvP based on player feedback and testing to keep it as fair and balanced as possible. With the release of New Frontiers free expansion RvR has gotten even better! The new seige engines and tower and keep setups are very nice. Great Job Mythic.. keep it up.

Best MMPORPG on the Market

Having played just about every online game out there, I keep coming back to DAoC for it's RvR gameplay, stability, and depth. Simply put: it's the best of what is available.

I ordered this game, and got it today. It is not discountinued, and it is REAL! Its the best value for any Dark Age Player! All 3 games for less then what the 2 expansions would cost you. A+++ package!

One of the best MMORPGs

I have been playing Dark Age of Camelot since Dec 6 2001, that's about a month after it released.

Before DAoC I played Ultima Online for about 6 months and Everquest for about 1 year. I beta tested Star Wars Galaxies and have played several other online games such as Earth and Beyond, Acherons Call 2, Planetside, and various first person shooter type games and yet after all of these minor distractions I always seem to come back to DAoC.

The game world is huge and the player system can be a little intimidating at first but with some patience it will be second nature in no time.

The game is what you as the player make of it. If you like to solo there are many places to hunt for bad guys, many quests to keep you interested and most areas are generally pretty forgiving for the new player. Meaning that if you walk into a dungeon where high level monsters are u can probably escape unnoticed if you keep your distance. Unlike Everquest or similar games where as soon as you step through a border to a new region every high level monster in the area wants to eat you and comes running for dinner like you rang the bell.

The game is geared really toward meeting new people and grouping to get things done. Most of the people in the game are very good people who like you want to experience fighting a dragon (not recommended as a solo encounter) vicariously through their character (TOON) from the comfort of their home.

Dark Age of Camelot is fun, it can be very intense, it can be boring at times, and it is so large that just exploring the realm to see the gorgeous artwork is a challenge unto itself. Once you're bored with one realm there are 2 more realms to explore and they are all totally different experiences.

The AI of the creatures is sometimes amazing and other times predictable but always a challenge at your level or higher.

The realm-vs-realm aspect is fun. When you experience an epic relic raid for instance you feel the action reminiscent of Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis in the Vikings. A couple hundred of armored raiders heading to bash down the keep gates and sack the castle can be very heady stuff -- and quite the blast. And there is loot to satisfy your hunger for bounty on every creature although, no clear answer to the question of where the 4 legged monsters keep there coin has ever been given, it still drops off of them as well.

I have been playing on a Modem at 28.8 and it is easily playable but I must recommend high-speed internet access to fully enjoy the experience.

It is a game to try if you are interested in an MMORPG, the investment is small comparatively speaking and the benefit can be great. I have met people from all over the world, and am still friends with them today. The players come in all age groups and most players are well behaved, the folks at Mythic have been really good about keeping it a decent place to be.

I currently play on the Iseult server in the Albion realm as an Arms man. I do have some Midgard and Hibernian toons on other servers though and can tell you all of them are very good communities.

So check it out - you can even get a 14-day free play if you want to download the trial version.

I highly recommend this game.

I have been playing DAoC for the past 2 years. I have 2 level 50's characters and 3 almost 50. ToA has been changed and does not hurt the game. The leveling of artifacts has been made extremely easyer. The leveling of characters also has been made easyer by getting 1 FREE level every 3 days so long as you have leveled once through xp within those 3 days. New Frontiers is not all bad like people say. I like it more than OF(Old Frontiers) because it brought balance to the realm ablities and made it so that rvr has more strategy. As for population imbalence problems, those also have been fixed because Albion (the overpoulated realm on all servers) has a 7 day free level timer instead of a 3 day. Also on that note hibernia and midgard get a bonus to all xp and realmpoints earned. I hope everyone plays the game and if you decide to go on Galahad server in Albion and send Misformed (me) a tell. :)

Don't get me wrong, DaoC is a great game and I have two accounts and 14 toons to attest to this fact. The good news, at least for those just entering the game, is that you'll have an easy time immersing yourself in the game, at all levels. The bad, for long-term gamers, is that Mythic has made all of those levels, Master Levels and achievements that took you months and months of work MUCH easier for noobs to achieve, without actually giving you anything in return (you DO get the nice title of "Elder" if you've player for four years or more). Given the ridiculously exaggerated prices for artifacts and scrolls achieved through Atlantis (now available for free download along with the basic DaoC software and Shrouded Isles expansion at Mythic's site), Mythic has made scroll drops vastly easier, and dramatically increased the cost of repairing artifacts (in addition to adding Epic Armor in Catacombs that comes close to approximating artifact quality, and which anyone can, and almost has to, get as part of general class quests).

It's genuinely sad that Mythic, rather than responding to its long time, loyal customer base, has chosen to pander the game to potential new subscribers. It wouldn't be such an issue if something were done to balance this, like giving long-time players some advantages in crafting (getting an LGM "has never been easier"), or benefits for toons leveled prior to the Task Dungeons of Catacombs (where "leveling has never been easier"). Sadly, this is not the case, and new subscribers continue to join, which is, in some ways, great news. What should concern them, however, is one day they'll be veterans, like the rest of us, and will find out first hand how deaf Mythic can be to that group.
