In my opinion Soul Calibur 2 is the greatest fighting game of all time. Why? because of weapons, awsome combat physics, and well everything a fighting game should be. yes all of the above, buy this game even if you hate fighters,I hate fighting games and I love this game so buy it. Damn Sony I wanted Soul Calibur III...

Soul Caliber 2 - Circa 2004

GOOD:
- Good/Tight controls
- Really balanced gameplay
- Lots of different and unique fighters
- Minutes to learn years to master gameplay
- Lots of Fighters, costumes, stages, and extras to unlock
- A 3D fighting game that really uses the 3D space (with eight way run)
- A total upgrade over the original Soul Caliber, which to many gamers is considered classic
- Considered an Instant classic to many fans and many hardcore fighting fanatics

BAD:
- Not much has changed (gameplay wise) since original
- Have to unlock most of the game through the story/quest mode

IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- Has medieval theme, both European and Chinese/Japanese
- Not traditional fighting game in the sense that there is no real combos and supers, or even projectile moves
- Game has built in quest mode, where you pick a fighter and complete a number of challenges, the end result is you unlock more content and are a better player
- Fight with weapons, like a 3D Samurai Showdown

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Soul Caliber
- Tekken 5
- Samurai Showdown

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- This game is not only for Microsoft's Xbox, it's also for Sony's Playstation 2, and Nintendo's Game Cube
- All three versions of this game on (different systems, see above) have one unique character Microsoft's Xbox has Spawn from the popular 90's comic book of the same name, Sony's Playstation 2 has Heihachi from Namco's popular Tekken series, and Nintendo's Game Cube has Link from Nintendo's popular Legend of Zelda Franchise.

Mediocrity at its Best

This game is basically a nicer-looking but watered-down version of SC1, and it's ultimately not something that's worth $$.

For one thing, many characters are locked, and in order to get all the characters, Namco forces us to humor their poor imaginations by sending us into "weapon master mode", where mission after boring mission must be completed in order to unlock new features, including the characters. There's no other way to do it. It gets worse.

Namco must have realized that their AI was lacking, so in order to make the story mode of the game more "challenging", they loaded the levels with ridiculous conditions. For example:

Sometimes there will be "earthquakes" or "booby-traps" that harm you, but not your enemy.

Sometimes, your enemy will randomly become invincible, such that even unblockable power-up attacks do no damage.

This is the sort of "fun" stuff Namco has in mind for us. I don't know. I paid for the game, I want all the characters, is that unrealistic? Why should anyone have to waste their time with these boring pointless missions in order to get what they already paid for? This is all just a stunt by Namco because they realized that the game, as it stood, was too mediocre. Their solution for this was to lock certain features and then make up "challenges" in order to get them. These aren't real challenges, though, they're just scenarios where Namco stacks the odds against you and hopes you get lucky. There's no skill involved. There's also no fun.

Basically, this game is a lame imitation of the first.

Graphics: 8/10
Game play: 5/10
Replayability: 1/10
Sound & Music: 1/10

That's right. The sound and music for this game sucks. People have made a big deal about its stereo features, but what's the point of having surround sound in a game when the sound it gives you is garbage? Be prepared for cheezy musical scores and even cheezier English voices for your characters (the one's you're allowed to have, anyway).

I am writing this review after playing the japanese version of this game and I must say I'm impressed.I have played the original soul calibur on dreamcast. There are new characters Talim,Cassandra,Necrid,Raphael etc. and yes,Spawn(charac from another videogame). The character models are much more detailed and in high resolution and so are the stages. You can see their hair and clothes sway in the wind. Now those of you expecting a graphical feast like DOA3 might be slightly let down. But without comparing it to any other game, the graphics are still pretty solid.Sound quality is great.Sounds of blades clashing are realistic and the music fits the fighting very well. The fighting engine is much like the original SC.There is a nice intro movie as well. THE one good thing Namco has done is that it has retained most of those elements which made the original SC on dreamcast a hit(like multiple weapons and costumes, weapons master mode, museum mode, lots of unlockables).Another good thing about this game is that there are virtually no load times. All in all,a very worthy sequel.A good purchase.

Ok, i have got to say, THIS GAME IS AWWWSOMMMEE!! I love it, it is way better than all those other fighting games. Its so cool, you can be Spawn, there are also tons of weapons, about 200, all the other characters are great too. The moves you can do are spectacular. Definately a very cool game.

Graphics: 9

Gameplay: 10

Great Game: YES! Go buy it.

If your a loner and no one likes you, you will get tired of this game really fast, but if there are at least 2 of you there to play, this game is probly the best 3d fighter out there. The single player story mode is lacking, at best, but playing another person is just a good time. Be sure not to beat your friends up too much, or they may get mad.

Same game as Soul calibur 1

As first I thought this game was alrigtht, then i realized its almost exactly the same damn game as SC1. How can Namco fail to make real improvements on this game when the first SC was for dreamcast, which is a pethetically weak system, compared to Xbox. This just illustrates the fact that all xbox games, save for 1 or 2, fail to utilize the potential that the system hardware provides. Its really sad that i have a game system with a CPU that is powerful enought to support the most sophisticated programs in the world, and no games that are worthy of it.

Best of the three

Truly, this is the best version of the game. For those of you who think the control is bad, think again. For those of you who think Spawn is bad, think again. For those of you who don't have a Dolby Digital 5.1 enabled receiver and home theater setup, I pity you---for you cannot enjoy the TRUE surround sound of the Xbox version of Soul Calibur II. I also pity you HDTV owners who can only play the Gamecube version in 480p, whereas the Xbox version plays in 720p. =)

failed to WOW me

dont get me wrong ...this is a Great game but I really do feel that namco did NOT make good use of the Xbox's power ....perhaps they should call tecmo and get some pointers. I had the first SC on my DC (best fighting game system to date) and that game really WOWd me because I knew that game was a first class effort by namco ....and this is a very bland effort on thier behalf. It is very obvious to me that namco's main focal point is the PS2 and the other 2 ports were just windows of opportunity to make money. It is a real shame that one of the top arcade giants would much prefer to use UNDERPOWERED hardware (system 246 = PS2)to create thier games but hey that's just me

Best Fighting since the original Soul Calibur !!!
