Depths of Darkhollow from beta

Hi, I have played EQ for many years. It's been fun with lots of friends in various guilds. It was always a problem when my friends would get to various stages different than the one I was at. It would seem ideal that all your friends are the same level of gear/flags as you are, but it seems that you level with people that are there to win and you find friends in other places. That's how my EQ time with friends has been, they and myself always in different guilds and at different stages of game.

DoD allows you to even the play field with any friend and you won't ever not have the class of character you need. The spirit shrouds give you all classes to play at any level equal orlower than yourself in stages of 5(70,65,60,etc.) So if your group needs a cleric, then by all means use a shroud and become a cleric. If your group has two clerics and no dps, then become a wizard, etc.

The shrouds are very limited in abilities to the class used, meaning wizards have damage spells, but don't have gates etc. The gear and abilities of shrouds can be changed as you gain experience with them. None of the gear in game to date will work on a shroud. Buffs from other players and stat food is the only things I found worked for helping shrouds. The idea is to make a pure class to help your party.

Fun Factor,,, Yes this is very fun to play with new zones and new monster characters. You have just been given an entirely new game to play with everquest, I find striking resemblences to wow with the monsters. Today I played a wizard level 70 and then became level 20 in a mission with some other level 70 players. My character is normally a level 70 warrior, but I used a shroud and became a 70 wizard, then we all did a mission where I/we were once again made into monsters and played as level 20 toons. I left that mission and became the shroud 70 wizard again. Fun Factor, hmm, play any character you like whenever you want to and join with any group, woohoo.

The implications of using shroud in guild raids is very profound in that you can always have enough clerics, dps, warriors for any raid, just assign the shroud to make up for what your raid needs. The normal characters in class are still alot more versatile than shrouds, but the freedom to play has just been leveled to everyone with this expansion.

Awesome exoansion

This expansion adds a new twist to the game by letting you play as spirit shrouds. It is much cooler than it sounds and it really has to be experienced. The new zones look abolutely stunning and the monster missions rock. There is a mission that lets you and a group of friends play as the mobs in Nagafen's Lair, including Lord Nagafen, as you fend off a bunch of NPC raiders. Basically your group plays as Nagafen, King Tranix, Magus Roykul and some Fire Giant priests as you get raided by wave after wave of NPC raiders. This event is repeatable and the XP reward is very high. There are other events similar to this, but this one stands out. Some missions require only 3 or 4 people, so you don't have to wait around for a group, and all the monster missions happen in instanced zones.

First thing you should do when you buy this expansion is to do the Slipgear Augment quest, available in Corathus Creep.
All in all, this is a great expansion for the Everquest franchise. It has something for everyone.

Beta Tester perspective

This will be a wonderful expansion, if you happen to already be in the top 1% of the uuberest most L33T guilds who can mount raids of 50+ level 70 characters all with better than time equipment. For the average EverQuest player though, this expansion has very Little to offer. Most of the content is tuned well above the average player.

The new Graphics though are wonderful, it is very evident that the new graphics team has a lot of talent. There are several well designed new zones, but sadly, most people will never see much of it.

One feature however stands out, that being the new "Monster Missions." In these you enter an instanced dungeon polymorphed into a monster. Because you take nothing from your character on the mission (not even your spells) it is a wonderful challenge and a test of PLAYER skill instead of what equipment you have. It requires a group experiance however, and the current Pickup group situation may make this feature impossible to use.

Above all, Sony was not really ready for this expansion. When it was set to the Beta testers, large sections of the expansion were uncoded and inoperable, causing many of the testers to abandon it after just a few weeks. I suspect the same will occur as this enters the live servers. A few weeks of "Oohhh.. Ahhh..." at the new graphics, then ...

DoDh has been a good enhancement

There have been several nerfs to the monster missions as the developers keep trying to reduce the benefits and increase the difficulty of them to help balance out where ppl go in their online world.
I got my druid from 62 to 65, my mage from 62 to 70 (40 aa), and my 70 bard from 267aa to 545aa; all doing chain monster missions. The exp was unbeatable. Each time I was a little bummed that I had to find something else to do to gain exp, until finally I just figured I would stop doing the monster missions and work on the 15 spell missions.
It wasnt until this time that I realized how nice the drops are for those missions. I have never gotten any raid loot ever since I have been playing back in 1999. I dont go on many guild raids and have never won any roll on anything so everything I own is one-groupable. This expansion has been great for providing me equipment upgrades.
Yes, in this expansion there are areas and missions for uber guild raids but there is also plenty of content for average groups. Now, having said that, there is very little content for lower or mid level characters in the new zones. Realistically, you need to be 65-70 in order to do anything here. Sure somebody who is 55 and skilled with their character will say he is doing well at a certain spot in the new zones, but online reality is online reality. (Thats a scary thought)
So in summary, I dont give this 5 stars because it is limited to only level 65-70 characters in the new zones and has limited lower level content being that they can realistically only do monster missions in the old zones.

This is in response to the person who said only L33T guilds with 50+ level 70s are the only ones who can access higher end content in this expansion. First of all.. most (if not all) of the content from GoD (Gates of Discord) to DoD (Depths of Darkhollow) expansion had a limit on the number of raiders alloud in raiding instances. This was due (in my own personal opinion ) to most of PoP (Planes of Power) gods being zerg'd by 120 people from forming 2 different raids to make the god "easier" to take down so more people from lesser guilds as they say the flag they needed. Now with the new format of making most raids from GoD forward instanced (Plane of Time is now instanced making it easier to keep guilds from fighting over it) and having them have a limit on the number of players alloud, it makes the game a lot more challenging even for the "l33t" guilds. I, myself have sat on the "bench" numerous times because of the number restrictions on raiding instances. ok /rant off about the raids.
As far as the instanced open to all players/groups. I feel that Sony made acquiring the 68-70 spells/abilities a little too difficult for the casual player. For instance, the boss for the level 68 #5 mission is very difficult for one group of players to take down without a solid tank (at least 13k unbuffed) and a healer with a huge mana pool (at least 10k) and healing aa's. That's a little extreme in my opinion, but of course remember GoD and how difficult that expansion was when it first came out? I still don't have my spells from that expansion, and I think sony did an excellent job of noticing that most people wouldn't get those spells and made similar or better ones with the OoW (Omens of War) expansion. I would compare these spell missions with "Ancient Spells" from the Velius, Luclin eras etc. Because they are only accessable to "l33t" guilds again.
Overall, I think Sony did an excellent job with this expansion by balencing out gameplay for lower levels, family style guilds, and hardcore raiding guilds or "l33t" guilds as the previous person stated. It definatly keeps all types of players busy and entertained.
