For shame, EA Games!

I was very disappointed in the fourth Harry Potter game, having enjoyed the first and second and even the third. This game begins with Harry, Ron, and Hermione running away from the Death Eaters at the World Cup campground. (You can choose which character to be, and you can play with a friend.) Then the trio dive into the Pensieve to complete some pointless, repetitive tasks. When they are done, it's on to the Triwizard Tournament tasks. All of these are zap-zap-knock-out-the-bug-or-whatever-creature is after you. Even that would be OK, if only we could use the mouse, but no! We have to use the arrow keys to move and the X and C keys to zap.

For some unknown reason, the perspective is always from above; we never see from Harry's viewpoint. Often he ends up running and we can't see where he's going. It's very awkward and slow-going. Yes, the graphics and sound are good, and the characters look like the movie actors, but the game play is so frustrating. Bring back the mouse control, EA Games. This game is a dud.

SO DISAPPOINTED!!!

I absolutely agree with any other person who thinks this game sucks. I, like many others, played the last three games and they were sooo cool. When I started playing this one (the Quidditch World Cup), I thought - wait a minute - this looks like something from 1995. In the previous games, I loved exploring around Hogwarts, and in the second game, I loved duelling. I really hated the "access the Pensieve and select a level to play" theory. What do they think they were doing?

In addition, sometimes I have no clue as to what is going on - what was I supposed to do? It's ridiculous finding those godforsaken shields to complete the level. Plus, often Harry, Ron, and Hermione are so small that I can't even see them properly. I dislike the perspective of the game (being forced to observe the scene from above is terrible). The levels are often ridiculous as well - it just doesn't make sense that there is a Blast-Ended Skrewt in the greenhouse, and it is ridiculous that one of the levels that you "unlock" tells you to "smash everything within your sight".

They took away jumping, and they took away the whole feel of the game! It's stupid that Harry, Ron and Hermione are just so stupid in the game! They never cooperate well when casting spells together are needed. They react extremely slowly, and by then you should have been devoured by a Dugbog.

The Triwizard tasks were a disaster. I had no idea how I was supposed to destroy all that marine life in the lake during the second task using the pathetic 'Ebublio' spell. In the third task I had no idea as to which direction I ought to go to, and when I finally stumbled upon the two mega-sized Blast-Ended Skrewt, it is impossible to utitlise the equally pathetic 'Inflatus' spell effectively on them.

There are too many beans. You almost definitely have to do the first task hundreds of times if you want to "unlock" the next level on the Pensieve, and you get almost 400 beans each time. I wound up with about 15000 beans for each of the three playbable characters, which is quite useless except for purchasing useless cards which you can equip your character with for "improving" their skills.

There is no interaction with other students, and I really don't understand why the exterior of Hogwarts can be deserted, even though it's raining (why would Harry, Ron, and Hermione even go out if it's raining?). You get the feeling that Harry, Ron and Hermione are the only students at Hogwarts. You also get the feeling that the only teacher is Mad-Eye Moody, which is ridiculous!

I don't understand why I even bought this game! The screenshots absolutely blew me away, and I thought "wow!" when I saw them, and the 'game features' totally made me crazy. The game cover was absorbing, but the game...blech. Don't buy it. It's a waste of money, time and effort. Buy something more interesting. Let's not waste our money on something that seemingly came from the Games section of the Accessories in Windows 95.

In short, this game SUCKS!

Give it a chance! It's pretty good

After reading all these negative reviews, I was hesitant to buy the Goblet of Fire videogame. But, being myself, I had to buy it and see so for myself. For me, it wasn't as bad as everyone says it is.

The camera views - Yes, it's new, but once I got the hang of it, it was fine and didn't cause me trouble.

The new spell system - Yes, it's new, but I kind of like it (although I still find the older one better).

The graphics - Excellent. I was impressed with the high-quality of the cutscenes as well.

The magic - There isn't really a list of spells...You press X to do jinxes, C for charms, and Z for Accio. There is a lot of magic in this game, though.

Multiplayer - I guess this is good, but I never played it with multiplayer, so...

One thing that I don't like is the fact that the whole game is basically just going to levels; DADA classes, then Moody's Challenges, the tasks...You don't get to go to classes and explore anything. In the previous games, before you had to go somewhere, you could explore parts of Hogwarts and etcetera. Well, in this game, you don't really...rest anywhere, so to speak. When you're done doing something, you are brought to the Pensieve, which is where you choose which level you would like to play next.

Do you remember having to wait several minutes, watching the LOADING GAME screen forever? Well, there is no LOADING GAME screen, unless you regard that smoky thing with the blue light as a loading screen, which, for my computer, stays on the screen for less than a second (literally). Also, there is an autosave option; no spellbooks to run into to save your game.

Many of you are complaining that you cannot change the video, resolution, audio, etc. settings. You have to open the Goblet of Fire folder and you can modify them there.

Overall, this game is enjoyable and fun, and though I favor the others over this, I still enjoyed playing this one. Give it a chance! New isn't always bad!

Sorry for the length of this, but that's how I write.

Un playable game

This game is unplayable on PC's. You can't use your mouse, the perspective is very disoranting, and the main difficulty in playing is the fact it is impossible to get harry to move in a stright line. The graphics are of low quality. Don't buy this game.

Egads EA!!!!

Wow, after playing the first 3 HP games over and over and over again, (the second one being my absolute favorite, though #3 did have the best graphics, but without Snape in it, I had to knock a few points off there)I was all primed to get my hands on this version, though I was holding off until X-mas for it. But after reading all these reviews of how horrible the game is, I'm afraid this is one HP game I'm taking off my list. I gather with all the "tasks" Harry has to compete in, this game just translates more to a console than a pc version. But I dislike the console games, so now I'm left with nothing :(
I think EA COULD have made a pc friendly version of this game that retained what we fans have come to love from the first 3 but looks like they just didn't try hard enough.

All I can say is they lost a sale to me, and I hope they loose enough sales with this game to know not to make this mistake again.
Oh well, I'll keep my fingers, eyes, and toes crossed for OOTP....though it sure is going to be hard to play the first 3 games this way! >_<

Not having fun playing this game

Like the others I am also very disappointed with this game. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because of the graphics. If like me you buy both the console and PC versions because they are different games, forget it, they are completly the same game. The controls are awful and you feel like your watching everything from a tower. I feel EA should redo this game and we should all write to them and tell them so. Who ever OK'd this game for release should be sent to Azkaban for life.

HP fans, give the game a chance!

I read all the negative reviews here before I started playing this game, so I was well prepared to hate it. However, (and I am a fan of the last 3 games, and I LOVE the Chamber of Secrets game), the first thing that everyone needs to overcome are the controls. No mouse, just arrows for moving the person, and a few letters for the left hand. This is not unlike recent popular PC games, like Broken Sword III, which controls the person with the arrow keys, and all the other stuff with the WASD keys. Play with it for awhile, and you will really get the hang of moving your character around, and which spell to cast. It just takes getting used to, because it is so different from the previous 3 games.

Someone wondered how do you catch beans that just bounce away from you, or where are all the secrets? First, when you cast your spell with the X key on the appropriate object, it's beans galore, and the Z key, or 'accio' will draw all the scattering beans to you. You can do it almost in one motion, X then Z. This is different from the old games where you have to walk into the beans to get them into your inventory. Second, go back and explore, because you can miss the items you are trying to get points for. So far, I've gone back several times, and I still haven't found all the shields, and dragons, and Moody eyes, though I keep finding more each time I go back into the level. After going back a 3rd time, I realized a shield was floating overhead, above all the action on the ground, and I had to leviosa a block up the stairs and over a river, then climb on it to reach it. I sure missed that one the first time around!

I've only been playing the game for a few hours, so of course I'm far from finished. But I had to say something in defense of all the negative feedback people are leaving. You just need to get used to different controls, and game rules. Read the instructions, play confusing parts through once so you get over being totally lost and creamed of points, and then start a new game and you will enjoy it more when you have a better idea of what's going on.

Come on, Harry Potter fans! We've got to make this work!

Wish I could give it zero stars!

This is nothing like the first three games. You can't walk around Hogwarts, you can't use the mouse, you can't talk to other students, etc. Really stupid game! The graphics are great, but who cares when all you have is pictures and no real game?! Dumb designing. I can't believe it's the same company as designed the first three. I'm so sad. I love all three of the previous games and replay them over and over again. I pre-ordered this one. Never again!

A little of both

When this game came out I was already making plans to get it after Thanksgiving. I had my money and, finally, I bought it. All I can say is this: this game is both disapointing and (dont want to say fun) "interesting". On one side, there's the fact that you cant explore the castle like on the previous games. Also you cant switch between characters during gameplay, which really sucks. The camera seems to have a life of its own, and I'm currently stuck on the First Task. On the other hand, you can play in Co-op mode, so I can play with my friends. The button layout is good, ending those transitions between spells less frustrating. The graphics are good, and the vibrating control just adds to the good side. I just hope that when EA makes Order of the Phoenix (which is a long way ahead) they go back to the old style of the games, but leaving some thing from Goblet of Fire as well, like the Co-op mode and the button layout. Unless you are a real Harry Potter hardcore fan, I dont recomend this game.

Whew. This game is a challenge. And, a nice change of pace.

I can see there are some who would like the harry potter games to continue to be very similar on the PC. However, as you can probably see by the reviews , this was not. With a capital N.
Does that mean it's a bad game? NO. This is by no means a bad game. Some have complained about the lack of mouse usage on the PC. From the many hours i have spent with the game, it is my view that that is a good thing. The reason? The view configuration switches at a regular pace. Some views are from behind, some are from in front, some are close in, some are far off, and still yet some are an over-the-head RPG type.
Could you imagine trying to use the mouse in ALL of these scenarios? It would be a chore unto itself! The locked in key binding is actually quite comfortable. The standard arrow keys control direction. And the lower left keys of the keyboard control powers and such. the z,x,c,v,a,s and so on. They are placed close together so you don't have to jump all over the keyboard trying to remember how to do this or that. The graphics are super-sweet. Clean and crisp, nice colors, and smoothed out edges. Nice to look at. A nice number of levels as well. With the simple controls this has an easy learning curve. By the time you've collected all 10 shields in the training area you will most certainly be adept at the controls.
This comes on 2 CD's and takes up just about 1.2 gig of HD space. It is an excellent game that just has a direct fight and continue mentality about it. With some minor puzzle solving along the way. Very consolish. But, in this case, it actually ported quite well. A quality action game that is a nice change of pace for the PC Harry Potter franchise.
Worth the time to play.
