Blood Omen 1 is the best out of all the LOK series, save that of Defiance... I was lil traumatized by the ending of Defiance... Anyways, the graphics are excellet, and if any dumb kids argue with me, I will tell them go straight to their mummies and play with there 1000 polygone count of the newer PS3 mustache of a mario wannabe... NO! Blood Omen one is the shizzle of my missle!!! I rant for one reason and one reason alone! REDEMPTION!!! Thanks to fekking Anne Rice, everyone thinks Vampires are sexy and seductive! NEIN fuer der Koenig- KAIN!!! He is the ultimate antihero! He is the greatest Vampire Story I ever saw in my life! If Anne Rice where to write about Vampires in this millenium, they would be ugly and dark, like KAIN! I hate pantywaste vamps! At least Kain has no problems with his looks! And he is the best thing to jump onto Crystal Dynamics and Eidos's lap!

Period!
I am Outtie
Hail Kain!

Actually, 4 1/2

The one half star that I deleted was for the slow loading times, even when you pause! But is t woth it? YES IT"S WORTH IT! Best voice acting a game could have, a plot complex, long, and entertaining enough to be a movie, environment design is AWESOME ... you get oblects and spells ranging from mild to gruesome, cool looking and useful armor (Flesh Armor for example: Blood Red, and the blood of your victims automatically comes to you so you can concentrate on killing), sucking blood from a distance (you can stun enemies and suck there blood from about all the way across the screen), and once you kill a person, you can go back to that place and see a semi-transparent version of them, stun them, and when you suck there blood, it's blue, and it adds to your magic power! If you love blood and gore, this has it, if you're one of those people who watches movies because they're Academy Award winners, with good acting and plot, this has it. The only people I don't reccomend this to are people who can't stand anything that's not 3D, (actually, this is 2/3D, you play in bird's eye view.), or people who can't take a challenge (this game is REALLY difficult, but not impossible.

There is blood gore and more blood.

The graphics are deplorible. The loading is too long. But get past that and the many errors and dead ends and this is a game with one of the most interesting and awsome plots that I have ever played. If you have Soul Reaver 1or2, don't you want to know how it started. Buy this game to find out.

A great RPG

I first heard about this game from a small preview in EGM back in '95 and even though they weren't big on the details I couldn't wait to play it. I got it shortly after it was released and it's remained one of my favorite games.
First off the game is almost Grand Theft Auto huge in regards to open ended gameplay. You can spend days searching for secret locations and hidden items.
The world is absolutely huge and every area you come to has a unique look and feel to it. From Kain's mausoleum to the Pillars to Dark Eden to Elsivir's Mansion, every step you take yeilds new sights, sounds, and enemies. Also the game moves in day-night cycles which, being that Kain is a vampire, affects your strength. Try to take on a tough enemy while the sun is up and you may have your ass handed to you, but go after the same enemy at night and odds are you'll win. Also go out on a full moon and use wolf form and you're damn near unstoppable.
There are a total of four forms you take as Kain which are wolf, bat, mist and beguile(makes you appear human). There's something like fifty spells which all have different effects on enemies or yourself, five weapons and five suits of armor which likewise all have different effects.
The storyline and voice acting is really what makes this game stand out. The dialogue is so macabre and twisted that I couldn't help but love it, and all the actors did an excellent job at capturing the mood.
I've read alot of the other reviews and it seems everyone's stuck on the load times and graphics. As for the graphics, well, what do you expect from a game that's almost ten years old. Don't get me wrong the areas and characters look beautiful but it's obviously not gonna be up to current standards. The load times aren't as bad as people think. Maybe a five second wait between areas. But it does get annoying when you're jumping in and out of houses in towns and stuff.
Anyways, I could talk all day about this game but I think I'm almost out of room so do yourself a favor and pick this one up, it's a classic. And thanks for reading this really long review.
P.S.
Can't find a copy of this game? Don't trust those backstabbing third party sellers? Well you needn't fret about it anymore. Blood Omen : Legacy of Kain has been recently rereleased as a three pack called Legacy of Kain Compilations. The pack includes the original Blood Omen (choice), the original Soul Reaver (admirable), and a third game called Fighting Force (garbage). It currently sells for around twenty five bucks. You can check it out on this website.

Any true fan of the Legacy of Kain/ Soul Reaver series must place this game at the top of their list in the series, as not only did this entry set the tone and the pace for the rest of the series, but it was a turning point for well done voice acting incorporated with a twisting and turning plot, which leaves you guessing until the very end. First things first though, this game has some of if not the worst loading times of all time in my honest opinion. However, if you can imagine the top down perspective of Legend of Zelda: A link to the Past with the graphics that were full of drab dark colors, creating an almost gothic overtone, you might realize why this game was pushing the Playstation 1 to its proverbial limits. The music is equally as enthraling, with a mixture of orchestral quality dynamics, and haunting sounds that will stay with you long after the game is turned off.
Overall the game is one of the best role plaing/action games on the system, and combined with one of the most engaging storylines ever devised, as well as some of the most gut wrenching and blood filled cinemas , the game pushed the limits of what could be allowed on Playstation (look at the censoring of the original Resident Evil for example). But it is not just this eclectic mixture that gives this game top honors in my book; it is more so in its ability to draw the player into Kains soul, witnessing his will being torn apart at the seams as he attempts to confront his own personal demons, upon being turned into a vampire at the beginning of the game. Upon awakening in his sanctuary, Kain finds the world much more to his liking, although the further he continues into his quest the more he questions his original willingness to become a vampire. Epic in every sense of the word, I dar anyone who says they are a videogame junkie to complet this game 100%, as this is a true test of patience, as well as utter skill. Its shortcomings are easily overlooked, once you realize just how engaging this game truly is, with completly different weapons at your disposal (you just can't forget the hum of the Soul Reaver the first time you acquire it) to the numerous types of armor, and magic you acquire, this game is an overlooked gem. Stick with it and you will not be dissappointed. Enjoy your nightmares.

pretty decent action

I can't believe more people aren't familiar with this Zelda-style game. I love Zelda: Link to the Past, and it turns out Blood Omen is almost as awesome as that game. The fact that the orchestra music is really nice, and the graphics are all dark and gothic, gives the game a perfect touch of adventure and fear. I love it.

Awesome

Takes you back to RPGing the old school way, but also shows that in order to understand a story. You must always start from the beginning!

blood omen is truly the best

yes i understand that it was made in 1996 and that it has bad graphics but thats how most games were back then. If you truly love the LOK series then this is your best bet. the story line in this game is so widespread and long and it makes you want to keep playing. But yes the graphics arent the best but they're good enough for any LOK fan.
