Classica hack and slash

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

Blood Omen is the game that started the all. The Legacy of Kain series has now spawned four following games, the last one 'Defiance' on the Xbox.
Blood Omen is a classic overhead view hack n' slash with some excellent, and for the time, innovative features such as morphing into bat and wolf form which allows the player to access different areas of Nosgoth.
The storyline is deep and racked with intrigued and deceit.
What really shines in this game is the voice acting. Seldom have I witnessed a game where the voice actors do such a phenomenal job.
For younger players which are used now to the glitz of HD games and incredible physics this game might be a bit dated.
For those of us that started gaming in the late 80's and early 90's this will be greatly appreciated.

blood omen is truly the best

yes i understand that it was made in 1996 and that it has bad graphics but thats how most games were back then. If you truly love the LOK series then this is your best bet. the story line in this game is so widespread and long and it makes you want to keep playing. But yes the graphics arent the best but they're good enough for any LOK fan.

Everyone should Own this JEWEL!!!

Blood Omen 1 is the best out of all the LOK series, save that of Defiance... I was lil traumatized by the ending of Defiance... Anyways, the graphics are excellet, and if any dumb kids argue with me, I will tell them go straight to their mummies and play with there 1000 polygone count of the newer PS3 mustache of a mario wannabe... NO! Blood Omen one is the shizzle of my missle!!! I rant for one reason and one reason alone! REDEMPTION!!! Thanks to fekking Anne Rice, everyone thinks Vampires are sexy and seductive! NEIN fuer der Koenig- KAIN!!! He is the ultimate antihero! He is the greatest Vampire Story I ever saw in my life! If Anne Rice where to write about Vampires in this millenium, they would be ugly and dark, like KAIN! I hate pantywaste vamps! At least Kain has no problems with his looks! And he is the best thing to jump onto Crystal Dynamics and Eidos's lap!

Period!
I am Outtie
Hail Kain!

Takes you back to RPGing the old school way, but also shows that in order to understand a story. You must always start from the beginning!

pretty decent action

I can't believe more people aren't familiar with this Zelda-style game. I love Zelda: Link to the Past, and it turns out Blood Omen is almost as awesome as that game. The fact that the orchestra music is really nice, and the graphics are all dark and gothic, gives the game a perfect touch of adventure and fear. I love it.

awsome

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain - Circa 1996

GOOD:
- Mature and Dark foreboding story
- Voice work is really good

BAD:
- Graphics may looked dated to some
- Game play may feel dated for some who never played a top-down RPG

IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- Top-Down RPG
- An original take on the Vampire story
- Takes place in a medieval type of world similar to Dungeon and Dragons

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- The Legend of Zelda: A link to the past
- Alundra
- Beyond Oasis

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- This game was made by Silicon Knights, who also made Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear: The Twin Snakes on Game Cube
- Silicon Knights lost the rights to the franchise and Eidos made all the sequels called Soul Reaver
- Blood Omen and Soul Reaver are two different franchises that fall under the Legacy of Kain franchise
- A version of this game was also made on the P.C

The series that never was...

Legacy of Kain Blood Omen is a testament to world building, mature, dark story telling, visceral art, and good fashioned great gaming. Silicon Knight's debut even almost ten years afterwards still never ceases to amaze. Despite the long load times, and the dated graphics the core of the game remains strong and steadfast. The world you inhabit as Kain is huge in scope and probably could never be replicated for this very reason in this day and age of modern gaming, the visual style is both consistent with medieval time and history while posessing its own unique flare. There are literally as the back cover of the case boasts over 100 hundred types of enemies everythign from a common harlot with a knife to ghoulish demons.
The combat does not aspire to 'having the teh most powerful weaponz' but is varied allowing the player to mix it up with each approach having its own drawbacks and strengths.
The sound/FX are top notch with some of the best voice acting PERIOD.
Not only is the world huge but also multilayered with tons of new extra levels opening up as you more areas become available to you. The developers were not afraid to use the whole of the environment to weave a rich, dark, LIVING, story.

Though, alas LOK was never to again reach the same heights as it did here with Blood Omen. Soul Reaver while an admirable follow up was frustratingly incomplete, and the potential it was brimming with was never to be realized in the subsequent sequals.
Blood Omen is true vintage gaming and exemplary of what can be done with technology regardless of its restrictions and levels and Soul Reaver is a maddeningly brief taste of that translated to the modern gaming scene.
In a word:
Play Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, and pretend the rest of the games don't exist.=p

Rating-- 96 out of 100-- One Hell of a Good Time

Any true fan of the Legacy of Kain/ Soul Reaver series must place this game at the top of their list in the series, as not only did this entry set the tone and the pace for the rest of the series, but it was a turning point for well done voice acting incorporated with a twisting and turning plot, which leaves you guessing until the very end. First things first though, this game has some of if not the worst loading times of all time in my honest opinion. However, if you can imagine the top down perspective of Legend of Zelda: A link to the Past with the graphics that were full of drab dark colors, creating an almost gothic overtone, you might realize why this game was pushing the Playstation 1 to its proverbial limits. The music is equally as enthraling, with a mixture of orchestral quality dynamics, and haunting sounds that will stay with you long after the game is turned off.
Overall the game is one of the best role plaing/action games on the system, and combined with one of the most engaging storylines ever devised, as well as some of the most gut wrenching and blood filled cinemas , the game pushed the limits of what could be allowed on Playstation (look at the censoring of the original Resident Evil for example). But it is not just this eclectic mixture that gives this game top honors in my book; it is more so in its ability to draw the player into Kains soul, witnessing his will being torn apart at the seams as he attempts to confront his own personal demons, upon being turned into a vampire at the beginning of the game. Upon awakening in his sanctuary, Kain finds the world much more to his liking, although the further he continues into his quest the more he questions his original willingness to become a vampire. Epic in every sense of the word, I dar anyone who says they are a videogame junkie to complet this game 100%, as this is a true test of patience, as well as utter skill. Its shortcomings are easily overlooked, once you realize just how engaging this game truly is, with completly different weapons at your disposal (you just can't forget the hum of the Soul Reaver the first time you acquire it) to the numerous types of armor, and magic you acquire, this game is an overlooked gem. Stick with it and you will not be dissappointed. Enjoy your nightmares.
