Epic and Involving

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 10

Although graphically ancient compared to the games nowadays, when this game came out 3 years ago...WOW. It has the feel of the old style 2-Dimensional arcade games. Besides running around and hacking things up..which is cool and all...you get to do a variety of exploring. New abilities granted to you in the game (Changing into a bat or mist) allow for hours of exploration to previously unattainable areas. The storyline is compelling and the gameplay is fun for anyone. There are a variety of weapons, spells and powerups that contribute to the lasting effect of the game. The computer generated movies are still well done even today...although parents may want to be cautioned at some of the violence depicted in them. For any lover of the vampire genre..this game is an epic!

A must have.

Ok this game is the must have can't get game of playstation history. Upon the first 30 seconds this game has you aksing questions and seaking revenge. The FMV's and voice over are most exelent (thank you Simon Templeman and Tony Jay who where by far the best as Kain and Mortanius). The story was one of the best with twists and turns resulting in betrayal. The only thing that could be improved upon are th loading times. However though they are long they are tolerable. The puzzles and secrtes ranges from easy to advanced as the game progresses. The magical spells and wepons and armor combonations are well made, and with myth and time period can be portrayed realistic. As to have come from the scurge of hell. The only bad thing is as I am writeing this Blood Omen can no longer be obtained for Playstation. Everything has goen to the hype of Soul Reaver. If anyone from Activision reads this please reissue this must have game.

Before Soul Reaver, there was Blood Omen...

If you're looking for a moody, intricate RPG with plenty of action and dark themes, here's your best bet. Even if it's a few years old and has some "ancient" graphics, everything about Blood Omen is AWESOME. The creepy music, the deep gameplay, the spells, the levels, the secrets, the FMV...it's just something you don't see everyday.

For the vampire in us all

This is one of those games that can be played over and over again. I've beaten it 3 times, & have found something new or interesting every single time I've played it. If you like vampire lore or role-playing games, you need to buy this.

One of the best game ever...

Except for the loading time, nothing is wrong with that game. It has everything the casual or hardcore gamer might seek in a game: incredible storyline, interesting, not overly complex nor too simplistic gameplay, and a fantastic atmosphere. For once, ALL the items, spells and weapons are useful, and you have to learn to make combinations, as well as using the shapeshifting abilities properly. The plot is intricate, very well written and simply epic, majestically told by very talented voice actors. Indeed, this game is a must ^^

A fantastic bloodfest!

Blood Omen not only features very well-done visuals and sound, but the story is written in such a way that just draws you in and doesn't let you go. This is an ABSOLUTE MUST for vampire fans!

a breakthrough in video games

Blood Omen:Legacy Of Kain is an excellent video game in all aspects.A gripping storyline with many plot twists set in a very bleak, gothic enviroment. The voice acting in the game is superb and very convincing with an errie but very appealing music soundtrack. This game is also original by breaking the mold of playing the typical "good guy" in video games;though in all honesty Kain is not the evil monster that you might assume he is.
The later installments of this game emphasize that and also show
how the supposed "righteous" forces of this game are in fact sinister and corrupt. It is absolutely necessary to play and beat Blood Omen in order to fully enjoy Soul Reaver and to understand the massive plot twists of Soul Reaver 2.This game is a must have!

The Legacy of Kain saga is an archetype of quality gaming.

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen is the first in a growing series of action-aventure, puzzel-solving, semi-roll playing games. The gameplay is similar to the Zelda series with a bird's eye perspective. The graphics were great by the standards of its own time and are decent by the standards of the time this is written (2/4/02). While the gameplay, graphics, challenge, and fun are all exellent, the one thing that most stands out is the story. The plot, while dark, is interesting and engulfs the player in its many twists and turns. Also of note, is how the story unfolds, cinematics and narrations are pretty close to seamlessly integrated into the gameplay itself; the player learns the history of Kain and Nosgoth while continuing to particpate in the game's action. Criticisms of load time are legitimate, but the game is well worth the waiting. The story may be difficult for some to take because of the sinister quality of the characters and their moral values, but it is worth it for the sheer enjoyabilty of the tale. One does not need to compromise one's beliefs to merely enjoy the game, though this series is definitely not for children. Additionally I would like to offer this opinion: of the three games currently out in this saga (Blood Omen, Soul Reaver, and Soul Reaver 2) this one presents the most challenge to game players. To expand on this on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, puzzle difficulty is a 7, enemy difficulty ranges from 3 to 8, and boss difficulty averages around a 7.5 (they make them challenging but not impossible). Other Ratings: Graphics by the standards of the time it was made 10 (6 by today's standards), Music and Sound - 9, Fun - 10, Rating as a whole - 10. Also, replayablity is excellent and there are cheats.

Awesome.

Amongst all the mediocore games that are released year after year, one game stands out as a true masterpiece, and that is Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. The game has everything a true gamer would want. It has an intriguing plot, outstanding voice acting, amazing characters, superb gameplay, and possibly the best use of blood and violence in gaming history. Maybe it's just me, but it's use of gore is so good, you actually get EXCITED whenever you see blood fountains, or blood sprurting out of people when you attack them. The weapons and armor you find throughout the world actually matter, and have really cool effects (i.e. When you rapidly press the attack button with the axes equipped, you spin around like a top, destroying nearly anything that stands in your path.). It has non-linear gameplay, although you must beat certain areas to find weapons, items, or secrets that are necessary to get to another part of the world. You're probably wondering, "Well, what about the bad graphics people have been talking about?" Well, for one thing, it's bird's eye view, so naturally, it just doesn't do what other games do. Making it bird's eye view was actually a very good idea, considering what 3D games looked like in 1997. But the movies, which are 3D, do have great graphics. In other words, the people aren't pointy, so to speak. The world of Nosgoth is very detailed, using incredibly lush animation, and realistic looking figures (houses, people, castles, etc.). if any bad came from this, it's the loading times, which you must have heard about by now. They are long and frequent, but it's not that bad. They're really not that long, but they pop up all the time. you have to wait 10-15 seconds every time you pause the game. You do get used to it though. One of the reasons that it has such annoying loading times is probably because of the size of the game. The world is absoluytely huge, and it has 25 minutes of video footage, which have great graphics. While the truth is that this is an amazing game (possibly the best of all time), it would have made a better book, if it was written well.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain - Circa 1996

GOOD:
- Mature and Dark foreboding story
- Voice work is really good

BAD:
- Graphics may looked dated to some
- Game play may feel dated for some who never played a top-down RPG

IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- Top-Down RPG
- An original take on the Vampire story
- Takes place in a medieval type of world similar to Dungeon and Dragons

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- The Legend of Zelda: A link to the past
- Alundra
- Beyond Oasis

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- This game was made by Silicon Knights, who also made Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear: The Twin Snakes on Game Cube
- Silicon Knights lost the rights to the franchise and Eidos made all the sequels called Soul Reaver
- Blood Omen and Soul Reaver are two different franchises that fall under the Legacy of Kain franchise
- A version of this game was also made on the P.C
