Bad Story, Worse Pacing

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 11 / 23

Sadly, this was a very poor RPG from Square. Usually I am satisfied with their products, but not this...

Basically, this game trys to pass itself off as the "sequel" to the greatness that is Chrono Trigger. In reality, it retains none of the fresh, fun feel of the original game and instead takes itself much too seriously. The mediocre, inane plot agonizingly drags itself along throughout a huge portion of the game, and then dumps loads of information on you at all the wrong times. Worse still, you have to deal with an uninteresting battle system, INCREDIBLY LITTLE character development out of 40+ characters, and a really disappointing final boss. I can't see this game appealing to any Chrono veterans or new fans of the series.

Chrono Cross's only redeeming qualities lie in its music score (composed by the same person that produced Chrono Trigger's music) and graphics (good graphics make for nice eye candy, but I'd take good gameplay over graphics any day, wouldn't you? ^_^).

If you want something good from the Chrono titles, either buy the PSX version of Chrono Trigger that Square had the good sense to release (Final Fantasy Chronicles), or go get the Chrono Cross Original Soundtrack. You won't be sorry!

"From begining, to end, this game exells in every aspect"

In it's day, Chrono Trigger was hailed one of the best looking RPGs of it's time. The same can be said for it's sequal, Chrono Cross

From Begining to end, this game exells in every aspect. The battle system is refined to give a worthy challenge without over doing it like in Legends of Dragoon.

The graphics are, like I said, the best seen yet for an RPG. The graphics are bright and alive, they even make my favorite RPGs look dark and dingy. They keep away from the pixil, pologany look of Final Fantasy games, while keeping a 3D look.

But I don't play RPGs for the graphics or battle system, I plau for the music and story, both of these are spectacular in Chrono Cross.

Spectacular, awsome, stupendous, in a word, genius. The story behind Chrono Cross, is a boy named Serge, who is pulled into a parrelel universe. Now, If I tell anymore, I might accidently let on a spoiler.

The music is great. The best to come from Squaresoft since the days of FF6. It makes you happy, sad, or normal. It, like the graphics, are very bright and colorful.

So, if you have been looking for a game like this one, buy Chrono Cross!

Good Game... No where near Chrono Trigger though...

I've enjoyed this game better then most games as of late... The graphics are great(I don't never care about the graphics, but they were good anyway), and the storyline... Well I'll just say it doesn't compare to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, but if there is one game that does, please tell me. I like the storyline ok, but piling it in all of a sudden really is quite annoying. The battle system is not original, just has not been used many times. I really liked the techs in Chrono Trigger, and I was disappointed not to see only techs when I bought Chrono Cross, but thinking of all those techs would have made the release date for the game in about the year 2010.. Not seeing Crono again was kind of sad, but storylines seem to suffer if they use the same characters over and over again. This game is also dirt easy, but most games I play are dirt easy because I've been playing RPG's since I was 6 years old, so my opinion doesn't matter. The music is probably the best aspect of this game because it always seems to fit the situation. Yes, I would play the music in my car too.

Chrono Cross is good but...

The plot is very complicated! Some say that it is deeper in content than Chrono Trigger. But that doesn't make it better. It starts off good in the beginning but you can quickly lose interest if you're not engrossed with it by the middle point of the game. The battle system starts out fun but it becomes later complicated and it has many limits on it that you soon find out half-way into the game. It seemed as if the complicated elements of the game was later added to try to achieve a better experience than its predecessors. But unfortunately the efforts failed in its task. By the end of the game I became so bored that I turned off the game and cleaned my room and became more satisfied with that than trying to beat CC. I highly recommend getting Chrono Trigger(which is available for PSOne on Final Fantasy Chronicles).I don't recommend Chrono Cross but it would be okay to rent Chrono Cross and check it out.

Wow.... but confusing.

Let me start by saying... WOW! This is the most beautiful game to ever hit the playstation. The graphics are better than that of Final Fantasy VIII (even though there are less FMVs). Chrono Cross continues the tale of Chrono Trigger in an interesting way. At first the player will wonder "what does this have to do with Chrono Trigger?", but as more of the story is revealed, the stories will tie in nicely. There are a few returning characters, but who they are would spoil the game, especially the ending. I liked this game a lot, and it is a must-have for squaresoft fans. My only problem with it is that there are WAY too many characters and this is often confusing. None of the characters are that well developed. Kid, Serge, and Lynx are, but none of the others are really important in continuing the story of Chrono Trigger. Anyway, the story is very confusing, and you'll find yourself wanting to read an explanation when your done with it 35 hours after you start. But, the game is excellent.

If You Don't Have This Game, You're Missing Out!!

Wow, what can you say about such an adictive game? RPG fans, this game's for you! With highly detailed movies, deeply involved plots, and a fighting system like no other, this game will surely blow you away!

The characters are detailed, full of personailty, and able to make you laugh, cry, or simply hate them! (^.^') With the recruiting system, you can't find all the characters playing the game through once. You have to beat it, and play again! Replaying value is great, because after you beat the game around the first time, you can beat it again for totally new endings! Now, how can you be unhappy with one game with several endings? Believe me, you'll want to play this game over and over.

If you like Final Fantasy, Legend of Dragoon, or any of these type games, I recommend this for you.

just not the same...

Ok, this game wasn't bad, but it's no Chrono Trigger. Sorry to insult people who think it's good, but I believe having 40+ characters is NOT a good thing. And you'd think, there being so many characters it'd have WAY more dual techs and triple techs than Chrono Trigger...WRONG! But also, some people think it's a bad thing that the main character, Serge doesn't talk at all. I believe it's a good thing, it follows the trend of Chrono Trigger, were the main character Crono never talked. I'm a hardcore Dragon Warrior fan, and thats the way all the dragon warrior games are and I like it that way. You see, if the supporting characters had unappealing personalities, that's ok. But, if the main character's personality is unappealing it can ruin the game. Like for instance, Final Fantasy VII, I really disliked Cloud Strife's personality and therefore the game turned me off a bit. I guess I'm getting a bit off topic. If you've played Chrono Trigger and you were waiting for a really good sequel, then unfortunately your out of luck. But if your just looking for an rpg to play then go for it! I really think Squaresoft could have done better though. I was looking forward to playing Chrono Trigger 2, which was going to be the sequel according to ending 2 of Chrono Trigger but instead I got Chrono Cross, and frankly I'm still disappointed. Anyways, I've babbled on enough. I give this game 2.5 Stars.

Buy this game now!

When I first got this game, it seemed really complex. I had some trouble with the magic system. The characters were a little wierd, and the graphics were pretty bad, even for a PS1 title. However, being the RPG master I am, I kept playing. Once I got used to it, I was hooked. The graphics seemed to get better, and the magic was actually quite easy to get used to. I loved the story. It wasn't too melodramatic *cough* Final Fantasy *cough*, but it wasn't too silly. The fighting was pretty fun, and the dialogue was top notch. Besides that, there's only one thing left to mention: The music. It is awesome. I was going back to areas I had finished just to sit there and listen to the music. So, in conclusion, Chrono Cross is one of the few truly classic games on the PS1, and you should buy it as soon as you get the chance.

Worthy sequel to Chrono Trigger.

INTRO: About 5 years after the fantastic Chrono Trigger, a sequel was made, many loved it, some thought it was OK, and a few hated it.

GAMEPLAY: The battle system is different from CT's. You use things called "Elements" with different colors. It's kind of hard to figure out at first, but easy when you figure out what to do.

Their are tons (and I mean TONS) of characters to play as, and there's many paths to take to get them, so it adds to the replay value.

There are two worlds to travel to, the Home World, and the Alternate World. Both are the same, but they have different things in them. Very unique.

Like the original, this game has a New Game+. You start off with all your weapons and elements, and you can fight the final boss any time, thus making different endings. You also start off with this device which allows you to slow down or speed up the game. Sweet!

GRAPHICS: For the PS1, these graphics are great, especially the FMV's.

MUSIC: A great musical score, like most RPG's.

SOUND: No voices, but the sounds are decent.

STORY: A very great story filled with plot twists. Some parts are very confusing, though. Plus, the ties with CT aren't until a little while.

OVERALL: Classic RPG, no questions asked. Unfortunely, the third game, Chrono Break, was cancelled by the Square Enix idiots. Will we ever see a new Chrono game? Who knows...

Chrono Cross is one in a hundred or even a thousand games. The graphics are astounding, for its time at least, and Mitsuda's music is so captivating that at times I'd just stop playing for a few moments to listen. Some of the first few battles can be easy or hard, depending on how quickly you grasp the Elemental system (I didn't realize it was there until I died about nine times without it, but that's just me), and they grow progressively tougher to the point that some of the sidequests are almost impossible without New Game+. New Game+ is the handy little invention that lets you beat the socks off that annoying Pentapus without even getting your hands dirty. While there are forty or so characters, they each have their own stories and it lets you combine them so that, at certain times, their Techniques will be even more powerful. Regrettably, the sheer number will probably make you feel like you're trying to hunt them down and there will usually be about twenty or thirty that you never use anyway. There have also been complaints about the normal battle theme, although I didn't see anything wrong with it and actually like it. My main beef with Chrono Cross is the ending. It seems to wrap things up rather nicely, combining all the Elements in one last stand, but it seems more like Square just wanted to throw in a final reference to Chrono Trigger and pull Lavos and Schala back into play. It probably would have made more sense if the game just ended after the boss preceeding that one, because Chrono Trigger's involvement is rather limited and if you're seeking a direct sequel, seek elsewhere. I realize that I may be a bit biased, since Chrono Cross raised me as a gamer, but I still think it's the best thing since TV and I don't think Square can ever match it.
