If only it weren't for the load screens....

This is an amazing RPG. I first played Chrono Trigger (on an emulator) when I was 19, and it absolutely hooked me. After hearing the closing credits theme from Chrono Cross, I knew I had to buy it.

The game is wonderful, it really is. Graphics are great, sound is just this side of perfect (a few of the songs get a little repetative, but they're still awesome), and replay value is very high.

The main problem: It's slow. Every battle initiates a load screen, which takes a long time. There are a great many cut scenes and conversation scenes (which cannot be skipped) and you will definitely find yourself looking away and just tapping A..or X, Square... whatever it is on those controllers.

Story line is pretty fantastic, though, and that helps make up for having to watch so much of it. The battle system is pretty good (personally, prefer Chrono Trigger's) and you are given a nice while to get used to your different battle choices as the game progresses--including informative battles against two reoccuring mini-bosses.

Okay, some quick ratings: (out of five)
Graphics: 4.5 / 5 (great, but sometimes very hard to tell if something is a wall, decoration, or a bridge)
Sound: 5 / 5 (just amazing)
Gameplay: 4.5 / 5 (really good, but sometimes just tapping A for ten minutes)
Story: 5 /5 (flawless)
Replayability: 5 / 5 (really optimalized by the fact that you can have completely different experiences, with different parties [46 playable characters])
Overall: 4 /5 (the load screens.. if only it weren't for the load screens...)

Chrono Cross Versus Chrono Trigger

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

Chrono Cross is a game that you'll either love or hate. Your opinion is based largely on whether you view the game as the sequel to Chrono Trigger, which is a somewhat controversial issue as the game description states that it is while a game producer, during an interview, said that it's not.

One aspect of the game many find repulsive is that there are 40+ characters, resulting in shallow storylines and 9 or 10 lines on average per character throughout the game. The flip side is that you get to experiment and combine very different characters to form a team that you want. If you enjoyed the intimate friendly party in CT, you'll find that lost in CC.

In terms of storyline, CC does a good job of creating a story that is complex but makes sense at the same time. However, as mentioned above, if you're hoping for a continuation from Chrono Trigger, you'll once again be disappointed as none of the characters from CT are playable in CC. In fact, at least one character from CT meets a tragic end, which throws out the happy ending in CT. In terms of continuation, the plot does follow CT well minus the fact that Schala from CT looks completely different in CC (No wonder Magus couldn't find her!)

Anyway, Chrono Cross is a great game if you view it alone and avoid comparing it with the classic Chrono Trigger. The storylines take on a more complicated poetic tone and the characters system is largely different. These, however, still work in this new game. I would highly recommend Chrono Cross to those who have not overly idolized Chrono Trigger and were hoping for a Chrono Trigger clone on Playstation.

Happy gaming!

This game is almost perfect! it definetly has the quality of a FF game only even better than certain FF's in my opinion. An Rpg with a great storyline and overall gameplay!! It leaves you wanting more. as soon as i had finished it i played it right away because it was just to good!

100% Great!

Believe it or not, this is one of the greatest RPGs ever. In this great RPG, (sequel to Chrono Trigger, another masterpiece, you are Serge, another silent protagonist. The game is certainly long enough, and has great graphics.

Sound: 10/10: It's hard not to like the sound, or the music. They are certainly excellent, and Chrono Cross has one of the best soundtracks I know of.

Graphics: 9/10: The graphics are quite colorful and nice.

Replay Value: 9/10: There's another New Game+ mode, and it is quite fun to go through the game again.

Storyline: 10/10: It has a good storyline, although it changes from time to time.

Overall: 9.5/10. If there is one thing I have to complain about in CC, it's easy battles. However, some of them may have you trying as many as 6 times over and over.

Bottom Line: BUY CHRONO CROSS!

A game for my little sister

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 3 / 5

Chrono Cross was my first RPG, and, for a beginner, it is great. The graphics are rich and amazing. The sound is, without doubt, the best I've ever heard on a video game. That, and the fact that it keeps my 9 year old sister entertained, is the only reason I like this game.

Battling monsters is one of the most boring things I have ever done. Attack, element, cure, attack, element, cure, repeat process for 10 minutes and fall asleep. The plot of the game starts out interesting, and then crashes into a horrible ending that really isn't much of an ending at all. Even with the many different endings the game has, none really satisfied me or even stirred any emotions in me like a good RPG should. The problem is that you never really get to know any of the characters personally and thus feel no compassion for them. The dialogue between the characters can be entertaining, but not enough to save this game.

Still, I use this game as an introduction to RPGs for my sister and as she moves on to better games, I hope she still remembers the hilarious lines that the French talking harlequin Harle would say and that she still hums that beautiful tune from the introduction as she doodles drawings from the scenes. Because I know I still do.

The bottom line is: for all those older siblings that want to share the world of RPGs to their little brothers/sisters and to people who have nothing else to waste their money on, this is a good game.

Greates game story ever made

If you think wormholes, timerips and string theories
are your favorite subject and you love chrono trigger,
Your are not going to be desapointed with this game.

Its a evolving story begining with the original chrono trigger
and this game tells you the effects, repercutions of lavos entering our dimension.
Traveling throug time was great, but now between dimensions,
even better.

The story goes a few year after chrono trigger, and presents you
Serge (the hero), kid (The hottie) and others. And if your
wondering, yes we see Chrono and the gang (from the original
chrono trigger), but the only question is, why are they here?,
why can to parallel worlds connect?, and (my personal question)
will kid ever find serge?

Its a story of love, frienship, and deseption.
The finaly is one of the sadest ive ever seen (made me cry), but
you can get (after you finish the game) more than 11 difrent
finaly's (like the chrono trigger game).

O, and the music is PERFECT, i had to by the soundtrack.
The best song of all is "Radical Dreamers" (the ending song).
I really recomend this game for all of you that like the story
of a game and battle sistem is exeptional.

Hey its your destiny, nobody creates it buy You... keep dreaming.

Good game but bad sequel? Possibly

Some masterpieces/classics seem to be called that because of the massive attention/hype it got. Or people call them successes despite the many flaws(witness Matrix Reloaded, big money maker but totally lousy sequel). Chrono Cross got big marks in magazines on initial release yet people now look at it as a far inferior sequel to Chrono Trigger and just an good game overall but not great. I think it's good but way too hyped and dropped the ball syndrome all over the place.

Story: You play as Serge, another silent protaganist, who, on an errand for a childhood friend is swept into another dimension, one where people talk about him in the past tense and soldiers seem to be after him. Like any other game, it's about finding out about one thing but realizing it's far bigger than that.

Graphics: Back when the game came out, these were great. Today, they're still colorful and vibrant. Your home village, Arni Village, for example is lush and beautiful that you want it to be actually real since it looks like the perfect vacation spot. Battle graphics are great as well but just like in Trigger, the overworld graphics are poor but that's alright.

Sound/Music: Whenever people mention the music, they always mention the opening track as a good "tester" for the soundtrack. It's a great track with the others being as memorable as well. A very lighthearted and "bouncy" soundtrack. No voice acting though, which is ok since the characters speak in accents/dialects at times so you kind of fill it in in your mind.

Gameplay: Like in Chrono Trigger, enemies are on screen before you fight them so you can avoid them but as always, it helps to beef up. Fighting is a bit different where, like in Xenogears, you get 3 actions: high, medium, low. Basically you got 7 stamina to work with and each attack takes away some of it(so you can have a combination of low(which is 1), medium(2) and high(3). Any combination that combines to 7 works but you can defend which'll raise it better for next time.

Instead of magic, you got colored techs. Basically every magic attack has a certain color attached to it and characters have an innate color like their own personal color. So if you're a white innate, your enemy is black, red is blue and green is yellow. If there's been 3 colors in a row cast by anyone, a summon can be called. It's easy enough to follow but one event extremely late in the game requires specific order of them and it's oh-so-irritating.

Instead of Chrono Trigger's 6 or so characters, you have 40(!) to deal with which makes it awful since many of them don't even have backstory, they just talk in funny accents and that's it. It's very unfortunate since CT had such lovable characters, even Magus was likable, here it's basically favorites. "She's cute, he looks cool" etc. In CT, I had to debate who to bring, here it's just whoever looks the best.

For best results play CT...then play it again, then play Chrono Cross. That way if you're disappointed, you can just go to Chrono Trigger again.

Great game, but the worst sequal

To tell you the truth i played this game before chrono trigger and thought it was the best game ever. But i just had to play chrono trigger, so i took my emulator and played it. thats when i was outraged! Chrono trigger had to be one of the best rpg's ever and had nothing to show for it but a sequal that ... You see chrono cross is good for people who havent played the 1'st game yet. but once you play chrono trigger you hate chrono cross. Chrono cross has only 1 character from the first game that is playable and thats lucca, but the problem is that she acts like nothing in the first game ever happend. the other characters from the first game are characters you just see in the game, like in one flashback you see poor Robo blow up! the other one is Marle who comes into the story 10 years before the game but you see at the end. mainly she is not part of anything. another part is that the world is nothing like the first. Even though this world looks cooler they still should have kept the older one. well the old world is also the continents in the sea of edan if you notice, but thats just stupid. And why do they keep the name chrono in the title if he isnt in it? I mean they dont even tell you if he died or not. So only play this game if you havnt played the first, trust me.

Truly amazing role playing game...

Chrono Cross, which is a semi sequel to 1995's Chrono Trigger, cant even come close to its former games plateua. Chrono Trigger is arguably the greatest RPG ever created. So while Chrono Cross is 'not as good' it still does a whole heck of a lot of things right.

The gameplay, story, and battles in this game are all top notch.
Its fun to get a handle over the numerous tough boss battles in this game because of the elemental magics strategic system. Black beats white and red beats blue, etc.
Its always fun and interesting to see what the next dungeon or boss has to offer. The gameplay is never sluggish and will always keep you on your toes.

Also, when you beat the game you have an option to replay the entire game again with all of your beefed up characters from before. And if things are going slow you can speed them up with a fast forward button on your second play through the game. Truly brilliant!

So why does this game get 4 out of 5 if it is so darn good?
Because of its confusing/tedious magic system and over abundance of characters.

Most of the magics and summons in this game are a joy to watch and to behold their might. But in this game there are no magic points and you must 'equip' every single magic spell you have. That could mean 50+ spells to equip per character! Setting up each character late in the game can take upwards of 5-10 minutes easily. And each spell can only be cast once per battle unless you buy multiples of that spell.

And probably the games worst point is its ridiculous amount of characters. Chrono Trigger had something like 7 recruitable characters that you can play as, each with their own terrific and unforgettable personalities.
Chrono Cross has 44 recruitable characters.

95% of your 40+ characters have the personality of a wood stool. Some characters will literally say 'Can i join your party' than join and NEVER say anything else EVER again!
Having 44 playable characters instead of 7 spreads each one way too thin and makes them all lose individuality.

In the end this game is still one of the greatest rpgs ever made for the first Playstation. While its few flaws keep it from being a true classic, it is still one of the greatest rpg experiences to be had in the past 5 years.

A pretty good okay game

Let me start off by saying that this was a great game. It was almost everything that I've come to expect from Squaresoft. I say almost because frankly the story is completely ridiculous and is merely a sidequest to Chrono Trigger. There were too many elements that weren't explained for the story to be whole, like (spoiler, don't look if you don't want to know)why did Serge's dad become Lynx? There wasn't really any reason for Square to say that since it really never had any affect on the game. The thing about Kid being Schala's daughter or something was also unecessary, it just siply made no sense. The character development was also another thing that I could complain about, it was also too simple and incomplete, it is kind of understandable since there are 40 something characters, but some of the characters were just there, like that Mexican wrestler or the mushroom. But what the hey I guess people wanted the game badly and Square had to rush the game out and leave some loose ends sloppily tied off.
