A great game, but Misunderstood.

While it shares the Name "Chrono" many people think it is a horrible sequel, It in fact is not a direct sequel like so many people think it is. It is a very well rounded and amazing game to play, It follows up twenty years after the Fall of lavos. Keep in mind when playing this game that it is a Chronological sequel rather than a direct sequel that so many people fail to realize.

While the game has numerous playable characters, it still maintains a very good story, if you follow it closely, but at times, can become very confusing if you miss certain details. Chrono Cross will net you around 30-40 hours of gameplay, and if you don't stop playing the game for extended amounts of time, the story just becomes completly amazing.

Exellent Game! (This is a no spoiler review.)

This game takes place on a group of islands twenty years after the events of Chrono Trigger. This game also takes place between two parallal worlds hence the name Chrono CROSS. In this game you have the ability to recruit up to 44 characters. To get all of them you will need to play through the game at least 3 times. You will probably WANT to play the game more times anyway depending on how long it takes you understand the story line considering it is VERY complex.

I wouldn't recommend this game to someone who doesn't like RPG's or long games. It took me at least 50+ hours to get through the game the first time, and that was with the guide book!!! If you plan on getting this game I would also suggest the guide book for it as well. Because there are somethings you would not find for the life of you unless you had something telling where to go and what to do. For example some of the characters 7th level tech skills are impossible to find and get without the book. You can find the Chrono Cross Guide on Amazon as well, but beware it usually isn't cheap.

If you liked any of the Final Fantasy games you would probably like this game as well.

Something else to keep in mind is that the battle system is somewhat different that any other game you don't use MP, you use what are called elements. These take the place of magical attacks. There is a down side to the elements though when you wish to change characters you must remove all the elements you had on that character so you can place them on another character. This can be VERY TIME CONSUMING especially later in the game when you have lots of element slots to fill. Beware you WILL HAVE to do this a lot. But don't let that get you down. This is an exellant game despite all that.

With all that being said I would highly recommend this game to any RPG fan.

Hope this review helps.

I was so excited to finally get my copy of Chrono Cross. The opening scene was better then ffviii! The graphics was better too! Ahhh and the beautiful music I couldn't get enough of. Then I got my first battle. The battle system is slow and rather frustrating. It was a major let down. And then after that, I got more of the story. The story is a great concept, but you just can't get to know the characters. One doesn't give a darn about the main charecter, weather he lives or dies, who cares. The only moment I did care about with any charecter is Kid. Kid seems to have more depth then any other character on any other RPG I've played. Without her, its really not worth playing unless you are doing something to help her out. Its worth buying if all your looking for is some amazing graphics and some excellent music. Other wise, just rent it.

The most overrated game I've ever played

As a huge fan of Chrono Trigger (best RPG of all time) and a long time fan of RPGs in general, I was eagerly awaiting this title. All of the reviews gave it the best scores. But when I finally picked it up, I was perplexed. I seriously had to wonder if Square was bribing the reviewers.

The game is simple. The story is easily forgettable. The game is easy and the action is boring. With a ridiculous number of playable characters, you aren't given any motivation to really care about any of them. The only reason to get the characters is for a Pokemon-type collector's fix.

I don't write reviews often, but this game is so overrated that I felt compelled to speakout. On the other hand, I guess if 95% of people loved it, chances are you will too. I just reserve the right to say "I told you so."

SquareSoft makes two types of games. The very bad and the very good. Usually there is little gray area. Well this game is in the gray area. A nice idea and a good game. It doesn't quite do it's predecessor justice but it holds it's own. The music is captivating to say the least. The opening song will reel you into the game with it's almost sad yet happy sound. The magic system works like materia but on different levels. You equip it like materia however in battle you have to build up the ability to cast that spell, and after that you can't use it anymore until the next battle. It is a very interesting idea that is executed well. The battle system could be better though. I am not, nor have I ever been a fan of turn-based battles where you choose everyone's action then watch the battle round unfold. There is no strategy in it and it can quickly aggravate you because you can't heal that turn and that can end up killing the character in the end because you can't heal immediately. The battles also move much too slowly, even for this type of battle system. I got bored playing this game and left it mid-game to collect dust for almost a year when I got the nerve to finally finish it. The story is interesting but executed in a less than great manner. The writing (what's woth SquareSoft games and it's writing) is not all that good and it can lead to button mashing to get to the more interesting parts. The animations are beautiful, simply beautiful. I found myself going back to past saves just to watch them again. The having to get minerals and items to create weapons and armors is bad too. The only reason why it is bad is because it is almost impossible to find enough of these minerals to keep your party, of 40 people if you want, fully equipped. That and money isn't exactly the easiest thing to come across either. Buy the game if you want to, I won't hold it against you. You will either like the game or hate it. Or you may be like me and indifferent to it. This is a very difficult game to get a confident feeling with as to whether you will like it or not, but in light of the failure of Final Fantasy VII it is a welcome breeze on a hot, humid day.

Way overrated!

This game was atrociously bad, and I don't know why people say it's so good. Let's start with the basics-
The backbone of any good RPG is the plot. Chrono Cross lacks a true plot. Well, I guess you could call it a plot, but it's really just a bunch of pseudo-intellectual drivel that does nothing to propel the game along.
In addition to the bad (or nonexistent) plot, to complicate matters, the characters don't really interact with the plot at all. Well, only four of them do, out of forty characters; the other 36 have nothing to do at all with the plot, and they lack real personalities (if you've read the book Jim the Boy, you'll know what I'm talking about).
On to the third most important part of an RPG: the gameplay. The gameplay of Chrono Cross isn't too bad IMO, but it doesn't make up for the shortcomings of the plot // characters. The battle system adds an element of strategy, but the battles are slow and sort of dull because of its turn-based quality. One of the chief problems of the gameplay is, once again, the indistinguishability of the characters: there's basically no difference in their fighting capabilities, and you can teach any character to be good, so you might as well just use the same three characters (out of 40) to fight the same battles over and over again. In addition to this, some of the boss fights are overly difficult and thus extremely frustrating.

ok so that's my rant about this horrible excuse for a quality Squaresoft RPG. Looking for a better game? Play Q*Bert instead!

Next to final fantasy 7, this has to be one of the top rpg's ever made. Great story, beautiful graphics, and a cast of characters you'll never forget.

Now that Chrono Trigger has been zapped back into my mind...

Okay, in 1995 I rented Chrono Trigger. I never beat the game, and never expected a sequal. Now with the realease of Final Fantasy Chronicles, I've been able to continue on Chrono Trigger. When Chrono Cross came, I'd forgotten about Chrono Trigger. At first, I gave this five stars, but now I can easily say four.

While the music is very good, it still wasn't better than Chrono Trigger. The story wasn't better either. Now, I know some of you were disappointed that they took out time travel, but I for one was glad. Why? That is because it would've been the same game, and I don't want to play through the same game with a different name. If its a sequal I want to see a sequal.

They mention a lot about Lavos and Lucca, but to tell you the truth, thats all that makes it a sequal. If it hadn't been for Miguel telling you about the events of Chrono Trigger, those who never played it would never even know that the game was around. This wasn't much of a sequal at all. You were basically trying to change the future again.

The word "Chrono" means time right? Well, there wasn't much of "Chrono" in Chrono Cross. It was nice that it didn't take place around the same islands. It was also nice that they had different characters. But to have 48! Out of those 48 characters, only about 1/3 play a part in the story, and the others are just there for god knows what reason.

While Chrono Trigger players die with Deja Vu at some parts, you will probably wonder about this game. They mention Schala and what happened to her after Chrono Trigger. The story is nice too.

Battle System? Its very creative, but does not surpass Chrono Trigger. Your characters can't hit worth [anything]! I've seen the word "miss" appear more times than I did with the low accuracy of the characters in "Final Fantasy IV"! Getting weapons is like in FFVIII. Then its dumb how when you finally get what you need, another type of weapon becomes availible.

There are no levels, and so there is really no point to battle. I don't like to fight like... a trillion battle to find my HP will increase by 1, and then never increase until I defeat a boss. To me, this is also the easiest RPG I've played since FFVIII.

Overall: If you haven't played Chrono Trigger, you may like this a little more than I did, but for those who played Chrono Trigger, you'll probably be a little disappoited.

Another SquareSoft winner!

All I can say is...WOW! Amazing graphics and I love the battle system because you are more in control of your attacks. Also, being a Chrono Trigger fan, I absolutely loved some of the deja vu moments sprinkled thoughout the game. It's not required to play Trigger before hand, but you will get more out of the Cross story if you have played Trigger before. The story is one of the better plot lines I have encountered. It was ridden with so many plot twists that in more than one occasion I really didn't see it coming. Knowing the Trigger plot...I actually expected what happened to Crono would happen to Serge or someone else in the group...boy was I surprised at the spin that was put on the situation! One of my favorite double techs is an adorable one called "DraggyRider." It's soooo cute! I won't tell you which two character perform this tech either. I also think (and I believe most people would agree) is that the tech "Forever Zero" is one of the best techs animated in the entire game. Also, when you beat the game...you can get two different endings...one good, and one really [bad] one. You'll get the bad ending if you don't do *it* right, and the good ending is definately worth seeing, even if it's only for the heartwarming aspect of it....oh, yeah! One last thing...Kid and Harle ROCK!
