AND I THOUGHT TOMB RAIDER WAS THE BEST

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

I loved this game and so far have found it to be the best most original game I ever played. I loved Tomb Raider and thought it was the best until I found FE. The cinematic graphics and being able to play with multiple characters at any given moment was great and very smooth. This game kept me on my toes. The weapons and saves were plentiful. I can't imagine why more games are created using the same type of graphics.
The game play was short but in my humble opinion that's b/c I couldn't put it down, the story line was so interesting. Definitely not a game for children.
I hope Eidos comes out with a part 3 and I can't wait to play part 2.
The one downfall about gaming are the female characters are always half dressed! Maybe the designers need a girl friend but PUT SOME CLOTHES ON THESE WOMEN.

Good, but very, very frustrating

I got this from Gamestop, for $5.00 used. I kept wondering if it was good or bad. Well it breaks down like this:
Pros:
-Great Graphics
-Great voice acting
-nice selection of weapons
-excellent storyline
-has a bit of comedy in it(Like when hana takes her towel off in front of a soldier, and Deke snaps his kneck)
Cons:
-Puzzles are COMPLICATED(I died, and tried many times trying to get them right)
-The inventory system takes too long for me to get a weapon, so I died sometimes, trying to get my favorite weapon
-After you play it the first time, there's no real thrill to play it the second time, unless you're trying to get the best ending on hard.

I still play this game when I want to, it's just that it's just not the same like the first time I played it, cuz I didn't know what was going to happen(I didn't use a guide because I didn't want to ruin the suprise, and man it was a painful long jurney) If you like games like Silent Hill or Resident evilm I would definitly recomend this game, but rent it first.

peace

okay i agree with every body this is well this game is ahem

Fear Effect is Awesome

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

Fear Effect is a prime example of the survival horror genre. At the same time, it provides an atmosphere and storyline which is a huge change from the sometimes stoic Resident Evil, which is rare. Resident Evil set the standard, and while Fear Effect doesn't transcend it, it provides change.

The first, most striking thing about Fear Effect is it's odd graphical style. The characters are done in an anime style, but the backgrounds are done in a realistic style, and they also have streaming animations from the CD (for things like fans, and beeping lights). It is just really weird. I kind of like it. After awhile, like most games, you stop noticing. Even if you don't like the graphics, it is still worth playing. Don't let the graphics deter you.

The gameplay and combat in Fear Effect is great. The controls are somewhat awkward and annoying, like Resident Evil, though combat rolls, 180 degree turns, and auto-aim help them out, and the set camera angles occasionally get in the way of the action, but other than that the fighting is nearly perfect. For one thing, the fear meter is awesome. Many people complain about it, but I think it works well. For the most part, it is just a health meter, but things which increase your fear make you closer to dying as much as getting shot, like being spotted by enemies or running low on ammo. If you can sneak up behind enemies and snap their necks (which is cool), or find more ammo, or even just do well in fights, you become less fearful. Most people's problem with it is that Fear Effect moves the meter straight to red (one shot death) before certain boss fights and other bad situations. That is kind of lame, but it makes sense that you would about have a heart attack when you see a giant guy with a mini-gun. It is a fear meter, after all. By the way, the boss fights and enemies in the game are super.

Fear Effect's storyline is great. It is very well put together, and just plain cool. It is one of a very few games that has an original storyline. Some of the stuff that happens is awesome. Some of the places and events and situations induce shivers. The bleak future setting behind it all is nice, too. The three main characters, Hana, Glas, and Deke are nifty. They are kind of original, too. The voice acting is pretty good, which is a nice change from most games, and the cut-scenes are great.

The main problem with Fear Effect is its incredible difficulty. The actual combat itself is hard, whereas in most survival horror games the difficulty just comes from ammo and healing item management. The puzzles are also pretty tough, which is rare. It is also worth noting that the load times are terrible, which detracts a little from the game, but is compounded by the difficulty. Fear Effect is so hard that you need to restart often, so you have to load your game often, which makes for some fairly heavy waiting time.

Fear Effect is a must play game, especially if you've enjoyed other games from the survival horror genre. Fear Effect is worth it for the experience. You've got to play it to the end, despite its problems. I would suggest it to almost anyone, unless you had a violent reaction to playing Resident Evil. It only has about ten hours of actual gameplay, but it seems much larger due to how many times you must reload your game. Pick Fear Effect up. You'll probably like it.

Not as Good as Fear Effect 2

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 0 / 0

This game is the predecessor to Fear Effect 2 and the upcoming Fear Effect 3: Inferno.

This game and gameplay are very similar to Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and all those action/adventure games where you have to solve puzzles. This game actually does deserve a mature rating -- with unadulterated gore, some suggestive sexuality and mature discussions of vengeance and under-the-table monies. The graphics is also well-done using a combination of anime and 3-dimensional graphics. The child's playroom in the Hell level is particularly creepy, and it is very reminiscent of Nightmare on Elm Street. The voice acting is done well, but Hana has the whole Valley Girl thing going on that becomes very annoying after an hour or so. Hana was actually much more mature in Fear Effect 2 than in Fear Effect. The music in this game also wasn't as good as in Fear Effect 2. The cinematics in this game are great and are nearly as good as Metal Gear Solid (as a date-to-date) comparison. The only faults of this game that I can see are the long loading times -- before and after deaths. I liked the Fear Effect series over the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil series because you have to have patience, a whole lot of moxie, some more brainpower, and a whole lot more reflexes. Overall, buy this game cheap, and you won't regret the purchase. Otherwise, stick with Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix.

The Worst Game Ever!

Fear Effect is by _far_ the worst game I have ever played.

There are 3 playable characters - you start off with Hana, then Glas, then Deek. Instead of a blood meter you have a fear meter, which is green when you're calm and goes to red when you're afraid.

You can be killed with one shot when it's at red, but it goes to red as soon as you're in a fight! Which is why you die every 30 seconds and then it takes forever to reload.

This game is unbelievably difficult. You die over and over again just trying to get up a ladder, or some other simple task which they make nearly impossible. And the puzzles are so complicated you have to use the cheat codes to solve them. For instance, in the "disarming the bomb puzzle" there are several different colored wires and you have to clip them in the right order in only a few seconds, or *boom* and load saved game. Which gets to be very, very annoying.

The zombies on the 2nd CD are a joke, they're bright green with cut off jeans and occasionally take naps on the boardwalk (fetal position) The only thing scary about this game was its awfulness.

The last CD takes place in hell (which isn't as fun as you'd think.) In the final fight you choose between 2 characters, with different endings. Both of which are a let down after all you've done to get there. And the fight is also lame, instead of getting more ammo for hurting the Boss, you get paper bullets which you have to burn in a nearby fire to get the ammo. Even though you had to do this in hell, it's silly when you have to do it while fighing the ultimate monster.

Finally, even though there are 4 CD's the game is really short. It's just the continuous dying and reloading that makes it seem long.

~I would give Fear Effect 0 out of 5 stars if it was possible.

Had a hard time putting the girls to bed.

This game most definetly kept me out of trouble for a while. I picked up the game at random and to my surprise, I finally got a really decent and GOOD game to play. The puzzles were frequent and some quite challenging. The characters are most pleasing to look at and listen to, especially the girls.I have played all of Eidos' Tomb Raders and hoped that Eidos stuck to its form of a good game to enjoy.Would like to have information on others very similar to FEAR EFFECT so that I continue to choose good games and keep out of trouble.
The character's behaviors, looks,& movements are pleasing. The grafics relating to the scenes surrounding the characters are really terrific. FEAR EFFECT 2 is truly great to play. I'm hoping that Eidos continues the FEAR EFFECT series. This would make me a very happy person. It is hard to find a really, really good and decent game such as FEAR EFFECT.
I had a difficult time quiting the game to do something else or to get to bed. I would stay up half way through the night playing the game. Needless to say, the girls also were up because I had a hard time putting the girls to bed. Hana & Rain didn't look like they lost any sleep on my account.
I want more games like FEAR EFFECT. I didn't want the game to end and was lost once it was over.

great alternative survival horror game

This not only the most unique blend of graphics I have ever seen, but the graphics are some of the best I have seen on the Playstation, period. Mixing anime characters that walk around in real-time environments is excellent. But these surroundings aren't just any real-time, they are actually CG quality running environments. So what you actually have is an anime designed character (with facial expressions), exploring in a CG environment. Now that the basics have been stated, let's talk about the special effects. What a Sci-Fi adventure title like this needs is some kick ass looking effects, luckily Kronos knows that as well. The job they did not only with the basic visuals but with the special effects is wonderful, explosions look great. In-fact if you ask me, things like fire, explosions, lighting and all of the other effects, seem as if they had a lot of time put into them just to make them look believable. If you are interested in knowing the process of how the backgrounds were generated here it is: Kronos started out with super detailed 2D sketches, then they render them into 3D and under low-resolution. Later final touches are made and then they are set to run under hi-res for the final version the game. Before I leave of to the gameplay, I want to mention a quick thing: For those who care, Fear Effect has over 600 backgrounds, and I'm guessing that that is the most any game has had.

Although the gameplay may feel like "been there, shot that", but Fear Effect's gameplay is really a breath of fresh air. The camera flow is a lot like Resident Evil's and Dino Crisis', the gameplay in general is as well. Though it may not be shooting zombies or skeletons, the navigation is pretty close to the RE series. You start out as Hana at the beginning of the game, you make your way through roofs and such, until some story twisting events occur, you are later forced to play as Glas, Hana's partner you now have to get Hana out of a few sticky situations. Along both of their journeys you face bosses and pretty mindless enemies. Which now leads me to another topic in the gameplay, the AI in FE is pretty stupid. You can shoot pass them and they won't suspect a thing. Compared to AI from Syphon Filter and Metal Gear Solid, FE's AI hasn't even graduated pre-school yet. Although when they spot you, they will fire at you with excellent accuracy. The plot in my mind is pretty inimitable, although you may have seen a plot like this before it is really the setting that makes me say this. I wouldn't want to ruin the story for anyone so I'm deciding not to describe it for you, but I will describe the setting. You are in Hong-Kong (the year, is pretty far from now) and the atmosphere of the game is Sci-Fi, hence all of the dramatic sequences (special effects) you will encounter in the game.

Like Capcom's RE series there are puzzles to be solved in this game as well. Some can be so challenging that you will be forced to use a cheat or guide. FE is a pretty squeamish game, tons and tons of blood is squirted all over the place. Besides all of that you have a variety of weapons to choose from, Uzi's, .40 Pistols, Machine Guns, Hand Guns and more. The game spans 4 CD's but most of the space is used for the graphics quality, and the gameplay is hurt by a short replay value.

All of a sudden we see so many games with voice acting spawning out everywhere. I won't mention many, but some of the few are Tomba 2, Alundra2, and Syphon Filter 2. It look as if this phase is being recognized by developers and is now being used in other games as well. FE sports some top-notch voice acting, there isn't a slight show of breakup and the voices manage to keep up and they don't stray, so late timing is not an issue. Sound effect that come from, say the gunshots are quite good, you can hear everything from the gunshot to the wasted bullet falling to the ground. The sounds of the environments are great too, looks like Kronos put some time into the sound effects as well.

The control is very similar to Resident Evil's. You have to hold the up button and move using the right and left buttons. Since games with this type of control scheme don't come too often, I had a hard time adjusting to the movement and layout of the control, but you RE freaks should get acquainted in no time. It took me a good half hour to get used to the controls fully, but once that task is done all is fine.

Fear Effect is Eidos' best creation so far, the only game that can compare visually is Final Fantasy 8. The gameplay like I said is a definite "breath of fresh air", a suspenseful, thrilling, unique game that will grab hold of you and never let go. Every second of Fear Effect must be savored, because the game doesn't last as long as current games do today. Give it a week or so and you'll be done. But still nothing should stop you from purchasing Fear Effect.

I have had Fear Effect ever since it came out, and I still think it is one of the greatest games. Though it can be extremely challenging at times, it is also loads of great fun, expecially with it's cartoon-like graphics. The storyline is brilliant fallowed by a host of awsome characters. If your looking for a challenge, than I point to Fear Effect.

Incredible game and incredible fun.

A mix of Anime, Hong Kong John Woo style action, Resident Evil Survival Horror, and stealth action of Metal Gear Solid, this game is awesome.

It is so fun. Even though it is very hard, but the cheat code give you infinite life, makes it pretty easy.
