Fun for a while, almost no replay value

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 4 / 6

I played Gauntlet Legends and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy almost religiously in the arcades for months. When I finally got a PS2, I simply had to have this game.

However, while it's a fun, simple game at first, it later becomes tedious and repetitive after some time. The game controls are easy to grasp, allowing you to dive into the game almost immediately after cracking the case open. The graphics rival the arcade versions.

However, as you get into the game itelf, you will quickly discover a stark lack of depth. The levels are linear, with few turns off the beaten path, and the puzzles lack imagination or any degree of complexity. It's a classic button cruncher to the end, and an unimaginitvie one at that.

The bonus levels are at least somewhat more complex, although it will take you very few tries to master them and be able to get the hidden characters consistantly.

To some, this kind of gameplay will appeal, amd I must admit it was killer fun at first, but I cannot reccommend this game for more than a few hours of gameplaying fun.

Quite possibly the best multiplayer game available...

There are very few other PS2 games besides Gauntlet that allow you to reasonably have more than two players in multiplayer mode. Gauntlet Dark Legacy draws from the rich tradition of the original Arcade classic, allowing up to four players to participate simultaneously.

While the graphics here aren't the mot sophisticated in the PS2 universe, they're quite good, and the between-play animations are of extremely high quality. (Pay CLOSE attention to these, as they provide important game play info.)

Multiplayer play is the strong suit here, and this game hits the mark beautifully. You *WILL* accumulate friends with this game (the problem may be getting them to go home.) PLEASE BE ADVISED: This game is exceedingly addictive and VERY replayable (you can even take a saved character from one adventure and start him or her out with a new group of characters).

This was great - even for a non-gamer

I'm horrible at video games. Really horrible. So when we went to a friends' house last week, I was not looking forward to trying out their "multitap" thingey for PS2. But then we played Gauntlet: DL, and I had the most fun! So much fun, in fact, that the next day, when that good old rebate check showed up, I did my part to help the economy by bying PS2, a memory card, another controller, and that wonder of wonders - Gauntlet:DL. This is a great game - my hardcore gamer friends love it, and super novice - usually dies first - really bad at video games - me loves it.

Great multi-player game

First of all, you have to play this game with others. It just isn't fun by yourself. Some of the highlights are the voices (which are absolutely comical) and the physical transformation of the characters as they increase in levels. The action is intense at times, and with all of the hidden extras, the replay value is very high. The only downsides are that the characters can be hard to control at times, and when you play with too many people, the screen gets very cramped and it is almost impossible get anywhere. But all in all, this is a great game to play with a bunch of friends.

A Blast From the Past

I had a great time playing this game. It was a blast from my days in high school that I was able to play with my 10 year old. The Graphics are real cool and the levels are increasingly harder. If you remember the old days of yesteryear, then this is a must have.

It's Gauntlet. 4 Player. In 3-D. You Get What You Expect.

Let's not fool ourselves. Gauntlet, when it first came out, was neither deep, nor was it complicated. It was Diablo before it was Diablo.

The same thing goes here. You have your four basic classes (Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Archer) with their "updated" versions for those who want the Valkyrie's stats without being a woman. There are also unlockable alternate forms that make for a change of pace when you're looking for something different. You can improve your stats as you will by use of gold picked up during the level running. The levels are varied, as are the end-bosses. And with the Multitap, 4 player madness ensues.

Varied and fresh at first. Old without other people to keep it fresh, it's still worth the [money], plus [the amount] for the multitap.

Same Great Game with just more realms and items

Just picked up the game. If you liked the previous versions on other systems, you'll really enjoy this. More realms, monsters, characters (hidden as well) and twists than other versions. It's more challenging and fun to play. The PS2 version is much more graphically stimulating and makes the shooting and movement more realistic. Great sound effects, music and all-around play throughout.

Good PS2 Game

I know a lot of people have been waiting for a good PS2. Here's one of them. Gauntlet Ledgends has always been a fun game. If you are a fan of the series, stop reading my review and buy this game now. This game combines good gameplay, pretty good graphics, and good controlls into a PS2 game finally worth owning. I have played Gauntlet Ledgends for Nintendo 64. This game is almost the same, except the graphics are a little better on PS2.

Anyone, even non-fans of Gauntlet Ledgends will easily get addicted to this game. If have to buy one PS2 game right now choose between theese; NHL 2001, Madden 2001, and SSX. They are all great games, but if you don't like sports this is the game for you. Go out and buy this PS2 game that is actually worth the money.

Great Game

I bought this game when it first came out and have been playing it pretty much constantly since then. I thought that the game might get boring after a while considering all you do is run around killing things but it hasn't, not yet anyway. I was a big fan of the arcade game and the Playstation 2 version, in my opinion, is even better. Since this is a playstation 2 game you would expect it to have good graphics and it does. The controls are simple so it doesn't take long to learn how to play the game. I haven't tried playing a multi-player game yet but I imagine it is pretty exciting. The are point in the game were short cuts can only be taken if you have are playing with more than one player. The game is also very long, it has nine different worlds with five or six areas to defeat in each world. Each world has different enimies to kill so it helps keep the game fresh. The only bad thing I can say about this game is that it doesn't let you keep items, it uses them automatically. Overall I think this is a great game and if you have a multi-tap it should be even better.
