Paynefully tedious

This game had a cool feature, bullet time game motion. Basically a slow motion system that allows a pseudo-matrix style game play for a few brief seconds. Apparently, they thought that such a gimmick could sell a game. Unfortunately, thousands of people fell for it. The only real revolutionary aspects of this game are the new heights of tedium that this game induces.

This game starts off with a story consisting of a comic page animation (e.g. mostly still, cheaply made) with what apparently was an English major desperately trying to use big words and a raspy voice in order to sound sophisticated, deep, and dark. This fails miserably and the darn thing never stops. Then there is the game. You can only save at the start of sub-levels, which automatically brings it down two notches.

The game basically is a sequence where you turn a corner, wait for the slow bad guy, shoot, try to open a door, then try another, enter, wait, shoot, and on and on until you hit a save point. That's it. The first level is fine, but the second level gets you. The controls are clunky and shooting is jerky and unresponsive. Bullet damage is seemingly random. Sometimes, you shoot a guy point blank with a shotgun, and he's barely touched. You shoot a guy fifty feet away with a handgun, and he might go down for no reason.

The first level is almost fun, since you might die to the randomness, but you'll have to repeat the killing of one or two guys again. The second level, you sometimes have to face up to 15 guys. It's no fun when the 15th guy, at 100 feet away and out of sight, shoots you in with a handgun and destroys all your health. And it takes forever to return the same place beforehand. The producers apparently couldn't differentiate between needless waiting and stealth. By the middle of the game, I was so frustrated by the repeating, waiting, random deaths; I just turned it off and sold the game immediately. I have never gone that far in a game and not finished it. Just totally frustrating.

The best way to describe this game is like the non-car missions of Grand Theft Auto, without the fun. I know why this is called Max Payne now. It hurts.

I bought this game after playing the PC version at a friends house. The slow-mo, "bullet-time" gameplay looked and played really well, but it felt like it was simply there to keep players from getting bored of the repetitive gameplay.
Every level is essentially the same, and the game plays the same way throughout. The story kept me interested, but after one run through this game simply wasn't worth the effort a second time, even with the number of playable difficulties it offers. Rent it instead.

This game takes place in New York where you play as Max Payne. The game starts when Max comes home to discover that his wife and child have been murdered. From there you basically go from place to place shooting up bad guys in a third-person view. The controls are a little confusing at first but once you get the hang of it they're not so bad. A cool feature is something called bullet-time where you can slow down time like in The Matrix and shoot up the place. The graphics are pretty impresive with loads of detail on little things such as individual bullets. The game is fun if you need an action fix but it kind of gets old after a while. It's still a good game but if you want a good action game then get GTA3.

One of the Best

Ok I want to start off by saying that there must be something wrong with you if you don't enjoy this title. If you don't like it well then you probably have no appreciation for the hundreds if not thousands of hours it takes to make a masterpeice like Max Payne.

Ok now that I said that I would like to inform the rest of world that you need not compare this game to GTA3 on account of it not being made by Rockstar. If you notice on the Ps2, Xbox and PC versions that Rockstar was the publisher....not the writer. There I said it. Get this game for computer if it can handle it. (...) I'm absolutley serious when I say this is a good buy. Go get it....today.....scroll back up to the top of the screen and press "Add to cart" right now. You wont be disapointed. Don't let all those other reveiwers who say the analog controls are "funny" decide for you. Listen to someone who has taken the time to play it.

The coolest game on Playstation 2.

Max Payne returns in home waiting for everything to be normal. But evil satanists entered his house and killed his wife and child. Now, Max Payne will have his revenge...
Although the storyline's preety dumb, and Max's voice will remind you a 70 years old cowboy, the gameplay rocks. Bullet time will make you want to play the levels again and again, while all the fights against the bad guys are amazingly directed and designed(It's also very funny to shoot your dead enemies-the whole place get's wet by their blood!). Unfortuently the control is a little clumsy...
Anyway, this is a great game, and many of you will love it, esspecialy the Matrix fans...

Really Cool Gameplay

While the game is too linear for my liking, the character control is outstanding. I have a wheel-mouse and it was the perfect control for this game. This has the best controls of any first person shooter type game that I've played. There is also a slow motion mode you can go into that is very much like the bullet dodging scene in the Matrix. The cut scenes between chapters are intentionally setup in the form of a graphic novel which I found to be an interesting way to present the plot. The only real complaint I have with the game is that it's too short. I beat it in 3 or 4 days just playing a few hours a night after work.

This game is incredible- I'd give it 10 stars if I could. I love the bullet time, but to me the music in this game is also amazing. I've always wanted to be the Punisher, and Max Payne puts ya right there in it! Fun game play, fun all around- buy it!

This game will blow you away! If your an action fan, this is THE game to get. It has a great story, excellent controls, some of the best action segments ever, and did I mention bullet time. Pressing a single button makes the game go into a very awesome slo-mo effect(a.k.a. Matrix mode)which helps improve your chances of winning in the countless gun fights you'll get into. Max Payne is one of the best if not THE best action game out there. Definetly check this one out!
