Max Pain!

Do not waste your time buying this awful tedious game! It's a Tombraider wannabe except Max can't climb, can't swim, can't drive a car, can't ride a bike, can barely jump. A lot of can'ts! All he pretty much does is shoot and shoot and shoot! To brake the monotony, the creators of this game torture you with a blood maze in the dark. Trust me you don't wanna know! What really stinks about this game for playstation2 is you can't save your progress, rather the game has save points done automatically for you. It's bad enough you have to play through it's pathetic chapters with neverending storytelling but you must endure repeating it over and over again until you complete the level. Unless you are in prison or have no life DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! In one word "PAIN".

"Bullet Time" alone makes this worth buying!

The story is very, very good. The acting is a little dry, but it was done that way on purpose. This is a film-noir style game, with a graphic novel to show the storyline. The overall feel of the game is very good, making you really feel as though you are in the middle of a 50 gangster flick. Some of the things that you can overhear the thugs say to each other when sneaking up is entertaining - like great movie endings, and "I don't like being considered a cold-blooded killer".
The game probably took me about 20-25 hours of gameplay to complete. This brings me to my first problem with the game, the difficulty level. The game uses a revolutionary difficulty adjuster to constantly change the level of play to keep it just difficult enough to keep you interested. That is what they tell you at least. With the right tweaking, it might be a great system - however, the current system doesn't work quite right. When I got to a difficult part, if I died a few times, it would suddenly go from decently hard to pretty easy - and on I would go. The game would be better with a set difficulty level.
The gameplay was average, at best. The jumping doesn't seem to work too well, and Max is a little sluggish to move around. The aiming doesn't work all that well either, since you have to use the right anolog stick to move your aim you can get really jumpy when guys start jumping out at you. The game is fairly forgiving when it comes to aiming, but it still annoyed me a little.
The other problem with the game is that it seemed to end too quickly. The end was very unsatisfying.
That being said, there is always "bullet time". That is easily the best part of the game, and alone makes up for the game's shortcomings. It is basically like turning the game into slow motion, Matrix style. It turns the game itself into slow motion, with bluring, but it also still alows you to aim in real-time.
Overall, a great game to play - with only a few problems. The good storyline, excellent film-noir mood, and "bullet time" make it worth the purchase!

The WORST voice acting ever in a videogame...

I will begin by saying that this game is COOL SLOW-MO ACTION PACKED!!! Just imagine a mix of the movie Payback, Hard Boiled, Die Hard and Matrix and put them on a videogame. This gameplay is like Metal Gear Solid but fast and with so-so graphics.

The voice acting is HORRIBLE AND SILLY but funny at the same time. Max's voice is a cheap rip-off from Mel Gibson's voice and the game say stufs like this:

"OH!! NO! NO! PLEASE GOD NO!!! OHHH BABY!!!", "NOOO PLEASE MAX!!! I JUST NEED YOU!!!", "YOU WILL DYEEEAR!", "COOL ACTION MOVIES AND I TALKING ABOUT THE COOLEST OF THE COOL", "I don't know about angels but is fear that gives men wings", "I made like Chow Yun Fat", "OHH HUHUHUHU!!!! I FELL THE WRATH OF THE FALLEN ANGEL!!", "Maxy, Maxy, Maxy, come out wherever you are!", "I didn't like the way the show started, they gave me the best sit in the house"

I hope you laught! soo ADIOS!

Should have been alot better

I had high hopes on this game but I was disapointed. The controls are horrible and definately the voice acting throughout 90% was bad. The story line was basically typical, it really didn't hold my interest for long. I did beat the game because I spent $50 on it the day it came out and I figured I would at least do that. I gave the game to a friend of mine after I beat it and he had the same opinion as I did. It's worth renting but definately not worth buying. Hopefully those who decide to buy or rent this game can devote a good bit of time trying to learn the controls.

Wow, I have to say that when I rented this game from Blockbuster I had my doubts but I was proven wrong. This game has very repedative gameplay, all you do the whole game is shoot people but I loved every minute of it. The name of the game is shooting but it is fun. You play Max Payne a cop who came home only to find his wife and baby daughter killed by some junkies high on a designer drug called valkyr, three years after the incident the main story begins. Max sets out to find the ones responsible for creating the drug and to put a rest to his ghosts of the past but all does not go well as he is wrongfully accused of killing a fellow officer so not only is he hunted by gangs but also by the law. During the game Max will have 15 weapons at his disposal including a range of handguns, shotguns, machine guns, explosives, melee weapons, and a sniper rifle. As for the graphics well they are acceptable but I think Rockstar could have done better. The enemies AI is challenging as they take cover effectivly during gunfights and while in the beginning of the story the are not the best shooters by the third part of the game your skills are being put to the test as the enemiles take good cover and are exellent shooters. The cutscenes are done in sort of a comic book fasion whith horrible voice acting. A cool feature of the game is Max has the abilty to slow down time and do some fancy bullet dodging jumps with the Matrix effect. The average graphics and poor voice acting during cutscenes bring this game down to a 4 but the sweet in game shooting action, the slow down effects, the weapon variety, and the easy to learn controls still make it a great game. I highly recommend that you get your little hands on a copy of Max Payne and it is now at a low price of 20 dallors.

cool game...graphics and motions are a bit stiff but Ive been playing final fantasy X so Im spoiled right now ..storyline is intersting and naratives are well written in an old school gumshoe style of 50s pulp detective novels...action is pretty responsive ..I really enjoyed it in the whole just wish the action wasnt so jumpy

Max Payne: A man with nothing to lose

This game is very, gloomy. The game Max Payne has a very dark, mysterious vibe coming off it which is very realistic. You start as an police man that lives in New Jearsy with his newly born child and his wife. He comes home to find gangsters high on a fictionous drug (valcry) has brutally slain your wife and baby. Then you move to New York City. You work for the D.E.A. with your best freind Alex. You are called to go to a train station and you end up in the middle of a huge heist- Just Max's luck- but you look for your freind who has called you there just to see him get shot in the head. And Ofcourse YOU get setup for the murder- so to sum it up this game is about a dude's bad day. But to get to the REAL reveiw of this game. Evreything is SWEET about this game exept for it's lack of multiplayer and it's controls. The story is very intresting and driving and the special effects slow-mo is the best thing video games have ever seen. But if you are thinking of buying this for your child (if assuming he/she is 18- years old) just be carefull. If you would like to censor your child from prostitution, drug's,murder, lies, corruption, betrayal and all the rest of the goodies in the bag then think about it. Because this game contains it all. (No hard feeling's for any of the comment i just mentioned to any of the parent's or...well just about anyone if that effected you) But all in all this game is fantasticly detailed with a BIG problem........the controls.

It is a game that has the 2 B's. B- Extrememly Bloody and Gorey, and extremely Boring. It has very, very violent scenes terrible for little kids, like my brothers. It also contains some pretty harsh, cussin' too. The M rating for it is perfect..

You are Max Payne, an undercover cop gone bad. Your family was murdered for an unknown reason, and you're out for revenge. I'm not going to get into the story very much because most of the other reviews explain that.

First off I'd like to say that a lot of people have given this game a terrible score simply because they thought the controls were hard. I find the controls a bit tricky to get used to, but if you use the tutorial, you will probably be fine. My guess is that the people who criticize the game because of control issues probably suck at the game, got frustrated, and need something to gripe about ;-). Some more complaints that a lot of people seem to have are that it has terrible graphics, the loading times are extremely long, and the frame-rate is slow. These people are simply comparing it to the PC and X-Box verisons of Max Payne. I have played the PC, X-Box, AND the PS2 version, and I barely noticed a difference in the three. The main noticeable drawback on the PS2 version is the long loading times. Every time you die the game has to re-load the level. During this loading time, I usually just try to strategize a way to get past the area I just died at. I only noticed the framerate slow down a couple of times throughout beating the whole game, mainly during a boss scene when 10 goons are after you ;-). The less-detailed graphics of the PS2 version are made up by the "blur" feature that is exclusive to the PS2 version. It slightly blurs all the movements in the game, making the textures smoother and putting a "Metal Gear Solid 2 movie scene" feel to the game.

The review you just read was to explain the rants and raves I have heard about the PS2 version of Max Payne. I'm here to tell you that the setbacks aren't NEARLY as bad as people say, and now that MP is a greates hit, ... Go out and buy it!

If you want to know more about bullet time or the story or gameplay of Max Payne, check out these other reviews, as mine doesn't explain any of that.
