Typical RPG fare toned-down

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 0 / 0

While the voice-acting is decent and the graphics are passable, the game is sorely lacking in the key areas of gameplay and story. Combat is slow-paced and boring and the landscape is a snooze with very little of interest. The plot is about as generic as fantasy plots come and fails to generate a sense of urgency or empathy...although you can see the character, you don't care about him or his plight. Dry pseudo-historical facts thrown at the player ("this is the xth year since the battle of generic name, the yth year since king blah started to reign") were probably designed to be a Tolkien-esque backstory to the game but only serve to confuse the player with a litany of pointless names and meaningless events. In short: there are too many games out there which succeed where this failed. Play one of those and don't waste time on this one.

This game was awesome and can't wait for the sequel if the sequel was as good as this then I would definetly buy the graphics are pretty good. Honestly this game is awesome you should buy it and the fighting is really cool you can like duck when beign hit and control who to hit. Overall this is an incredible I have seen some previews for the sequel and it just looks phenominal.

A lot of people have said that this game isn't very good when compared to something like Dark Cloud or Zelda, ect. I disagree. I was spoiled by the PC. The characters and voice acting in this game are far superior to any of the "anime" games out there. The anime look can be cool, but it gets old. This game has more of a "D & D" feel, instead of a cartoon feel. Your characters each have roles to fill, for example, your thief can backstab, hide, ect. If this was a PC game it would only be average, but for a console it is great. The graphics aren't the best in the world, but I did purchase the PC version and those same graphics laugh when my 500 PIII tries to run it.

The game has everything. THe movies are exellent, the eniemes are challenging, the story line is decent is okay and the game is so addictive I could play for hours. It isnt gory and is a safe and fun investment. Warning though when you get this you'll play for hour. What it declines in graphics it makes up in everything else.

This is a great game

First of all..A gamer is wrong. The games battle system is great, and; what do you mean you hafto wait five seconds before you attack? Do you mean that it takes that long to get up there and attack or are you just being stupid? And I don't know why people say that the graphics are terrible, I think they are very good. But yeah, you're main character is kinda pale and stuff, but that didn't really bother me. The story is also good, IMO. I found the pause feature for battles very usefull, as to how I didn't get attacked while I was selecting my spell/skill to use. This is one of the best games I've ever played for the Playstation consoles.

I cant dont know how to describe this game. It definitley is not a pretty game, but then that maybe more style than lack of good art, giving the game a more serious type of feel. The story is very interesting and every person you meet has something to say. People sometimes think final fantasy or other rpgs are a bit too linear or scripted, well this game is the opposite of that. I spend a lot of time wandering around and trying to figure out what exactly im supposed to do. The figthing is interesting, if you do chain attacks you cant get damaged by the enemy. I wouldnt give this game 5 stars , but 3 seems to little for a game that i have played 3 times longer than Onimusha(i loved that game but it was so short) and still have what im guessing is half of it to go.

Good game, bad loading time

I found that the plot was nice. The graphics were stunning. The sound [subpar]. All the good mix for a miss. I enjoy a step aside from final fantasy now and then. This game had too much space, too much restricted area, too little sound, and too much load time. The reason I turned it down was the load time. For cryin out loud, this game lays it on thick. Buy it, if you have the patience. If you don't (it won't matter too much, most ps2 games have lots of load time), buy Time Splitters.

Good Game, some flaws, but nothing terrible

Ok I have been playing RPGs ever since the good old days of comadore 64. and since then I have seen some horrible games, most of them were ON the comadore 64. But sommoner is a pretty good game. The graphix are good, and the sound is good too, but the story gets a little boring after playing for a bout 3 hours, Then it picks back up then goes down again it's like that throught the whole game! But the Oly BIG problem I got is that you are fighting for Hours and Hours at a time and that gets a little old. I mean people complain about random battels how there are too many. well this game has more battles then most other RPGs out there. so over all this game is worth the money. but I wouldnt suggest it for some one who is a DIE HARD RPGer like myself.

Another Example Of A Rushed Product

Upon starting Summoner for the PS2, I was immediately dismayed by the "Now Loading" screen thrust at me before anything even started. I waited for about ten seconds, only to learn that the loading was simply to throw a quick THQ logo onscreen. To add to that, the loading for actual in-game play is much longer. You can actually walk to the kitchen and grab a drink, come back, and still see the loading screen. As for the gameplay, the so-called "combo" system is simply engaging in combat, and pressing in one of four ways on the directional pad during combat. The combat is extremely stiff, and aside from random grunts and moans, nothing special. The overworld movement is not too bad, however, with the camera keeping up fairly well with the main character. Graphically, this game is a disaster. Choppy framerates, draw-in that is downright laughable, and a graininess that would of been criticized even on the PSOne. At one point, you enter a harbor area, and see the open skies ahead of you. However, as you step forward, you see a castle form not even 500 yards ahead of you, causing a friend of mine to joke that they had a cloaking device. In terms of sound, the music is quite nice, really. The failure comes through in the aforementioned combat. With that exception, I have no real gripes about the audio. The game itself would be very well had these flaws been dealt with. The storyline is intriguing, and the characters are fairly well designed. The quests are enough to keep you occupied for some time, and varied enough to avoid boring you. The dialogue is splendid as well. Overall, Summoner is a potentially good game gone horribly bad. Obviously rushed before the draw-in, combat, and graphic errors could be corrected, the mark was missed. Hopefully this will be a lesson learned for THQ.

Summoner

Summoner is a truely great game. It has a massive stoyline and the environments are awesome. There are a couple problems, however. For one, the story does take a while to really get going. You must be forgiving. There is a graphics problem that you will surely notice as well. Standing from afar you may not see, say a building, but as you walk closer it will appear. It also takes a while to get around, and learn your surrondings. Summoner is a very solid game, and if you have the patience and can forgive some rushed mistakes, this game is a great choice.
