How can you people review a game that hasn't even been released yet. Save your comments until you've actually played the game. Don't rate it based on speculation.

Pretty good, but not great

I bought this game without even renting it (spur of the moment purchase), and although I wouldn't recommend that, it's a pretty good baseball game. The graphics are great, though some of the animations are a bit slow. The The main problem with the game is that batting with the cursor is incredibally difficult. THe pitcher can simply move the ball too much, and as a result it is hard to make contact, let alone hit it with authority. You can switch to a cursor-less batting style, though that makes it a little too easy. Although the batting difficulty is probably realistic, it makes it difficult to just pick up the game and play.

Other than the difficulty of the batting, the only other problems are minor. For example, the fielders often pause for a second before throwing the ball, and running the bases is tricky. The extras like old-school uniforms, expansion teams, and a Cooperstown game are nice, but if you find a game with better controls, I'd go for it.

Great Game, Best Baseball Game Yet

I just got this game and it was well worth the wait. The graphics are fabulous ... true to XBox form. The expansion mode is cool, been playing that mode almost exclusively. Some notes: first ... triple play baseball has better player rating features, and easier methods for comparing player ratings. Second .... only real disappointment in expansion mode is it doesn't seem to have a amateur draft, which is a feature that i think is imperative to a good expansion and franchise mode. Finally .... the gameplay is very smooth, and player control is second to none (a little tough to get used to at first, but once you do it's pretty second nature) Seems like the fielders make too many fabulous over the shoulder catches, and get to balls that appear at eyesight to be out of reach (ball will be dropping what seems like 3 feet from an outfielder and will be caught without any visual verification) ..... but most defensive plays are smooth, and pretty cool looking. Pitchink controls are great, and controlling your bench and bullpen are pretty convenient. Overall great game, if it had an amateur draft every year in franchise i'd give it 5 stars easily.

GREAT game, but not perfect

People who bash this game are either fans of another system who have nothing better to do, or are not baseball fans: one reviewer says you can't play this game all day: WRONG. I played two games in a row last night. The game play gets an A-...hitting IS difficult, but with practice, you get better, and I had 15 hits last night, and a couple of HRs. Fielding is tough, but I feel it will come along with practice. The graphics are A+, but some glitches:
1) NO UMPIRE CALLS - No "Steeeerike!!!" or "ball." This gets annoying, because the play-by-play guys don't always tell you, and there can be some unnecessary suspense between the pitch coming over the plate, and when the new count comes up.
2) Last night, on a 3rd strike wild pitch, the ball got past the catcher, the batter disappeared, there were no outs, and nobody on base --- HUH? I HOPE that was a one time thing, or that is a serious bug.
3) You can't seem to slide manually, the players just do it automatically. ALSO, the graphics of players being out or safe doesn't always correspond to what yous see on the screen. Sometimes, you know you've gunned down a guy, but it looks like the fielder doesn't even tag the guy, but he's still out. So correct result, but poor visual cue. Annoying.

OVERALL, though, I'm glad I own this game, it is definitely better than Triple Play, the game play is good, the EXPANSION DRAFT and PLAYER CREATE is great (and you get addicted to building your own team and bringing them through the season), andit's definitely better than any other game on any system I've played.

I did own the Acclaim All Star Baseball on N64, and it WAS very good, but this is better: graphics much improved, some of the nuance game play is lacking from its former version, but still, BUY IT...

A Great Game

ASB is a very strong game. The graphics are well polished. I could easily tell that Derek Jeter is Derek Jeter and Bret Boone is Bret Boone because they even did detail on the players' faces!! The control is very simple. Fielding is relatively easy. Gameplay is usually sharp but is a little awkward occasionally. For example, if the CF is charging a ball, he will look like he is going to throw to second. His whole body is facing the second baseman but he throws to third. That is one of two bad things about this game. The other bad thing is that the fielders make at least 20 amazing plays per game. Sound is absolutely superb. It has everything any sports gamer would expect. The option to "buy" cards is really cool. And accomplishing great feats (two homers for the same batter, double play, ect.) rewards with "card points" which you use to buy the cards. The game is really fun but be warned: it is very difficult to master and will take about a week and a half for the average gamer.

Graphics: 8.0
Sound: 10.0
Control: 9.5
Fun: 9.5
Overall: 9.0

I gave it a chance. However , the game simply doesn't deliver. I must give them credit on their great hype campaign; it got me to buy but ,after a few nights i had to return to sender ! XBOX, has an exclusive coming in May 2002. Oh yea, and it's from the maker's of NBA2k2/NFL2k2!!! *One of it's many features differen't camera perspectives. Something all star 2003 forgot.

If you love to play baseball......then this is good choice

What can I say....I'm not a hardcore gamer. I played baseball through the end of high school and trust me...ASB 2003 is a good solid game. The graphics are good, the game play keeps it interesting, and it has Ichiro. A lot of so-called 'hardcore' gamers like to find flaws with anything they can. ASB 2003 will keep you interested long after the MLB 2002 season is over. There are drawbacks....the controls take a great deal of time to learn and can be overwhelming at times. I got use to it though and it made the game that much more of a challenge. I enourage you to pick it up....or atleast rent it. Its a good game.

Better than World Series Baseball and Triple Play 2002

This game is a great game. You can play an exhibition game, season, home run derby, franchise mode, expansion mode, and the new batting practice! In franchise, you can play up to 20 seasons. Some players, get better, some get worse, and some even retire. In the all star game, it isn't the same players every time. The players that have done the best go to the all star game.Same thing in expansion just that you make up a team.

pros:
1. Real 2002 rosters
2. Unlock NL Legends, AL Legends, and can play as Cooperstown Legends
3.Draft, change rosters.

cons:
1. Too easy to hit a home run
2. Too many errors

Those are the pros and cons.

If you are a baseball fan, buy this game. Otherwise, you should probably rent this game first.

X-Box + ASB= best game ever!

I cannot wait for this one, All-Star baseball has always been the best baseball game and now it's coming to the best system ever. Franchise mode with no memory card needed! The 3-D batting icon has always made ASB stand above the other games. I would wait outside in the rain for this version. Thank goodness I can order online.

The King is Dead

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 2

Acclaim's "All Star Baseball" is now a once-proud franchise instead of the king to which all other baseball sims aspire to. What has happened? "All Star 2000" for the N64 was an incredible game with very high replay value. This is just good and it could be so much better. Although I gave it a 3 star rating, I actually would give it a 3.5 if I could. It is better than a 3 but it is definitely not a 4. Here are the reasons why...

Gameplay:

Where to begin? As others who have reviewed it before me, I have already become exasperated with trying to hit. Then there is the difficulty in baserunning and fielding. A fly ball was hit over my outfielder's head and so I mashed the right trigger to dive for it... one thing, it takes as long between hitting the button and the fielder executing the move as it does for me to travel to the next state. That is what hurts this game the most: the loss of fluidity in motion that was so evident in the N64 versions.

Graphics:

I will admit that the graphics are awesome overall, but there are some spots that are truly bad. Take batting practice at PNC Park and you will see the cheesiest downtown backdrop ever made for a system with this kind of power. It looks as if the buildings were actually drawn and colored by hand. There are some minor glitches in player movement as well, such as when two players intersect. Yet overall, this is a strong area for the game.

Extras:

This is truly the strongest point of the game. It is loaded! I agree with an earlier review that the efforts of the programmers should have been focused on gameplay and not on bells and whistles.

Replay:

I will keep trying, but at this point I would only give this a 6 out of 10.

As a die-hard "All Star" fan from the N64, I bought this without a second thought toward renting it first. Big mistake. I am very disappointed and I have learned that I must rent first no matter how trusted a franchise the game represents.
