Backyard Sports is now 3-D!

My eight-year-old daughter and I both really enjoy this new Backyard Sports title from Humongous. I wasn't sure that I would like the change from the 2-D animated style of their previous games, but they kept the wacky cartoony flavor in the 3-D models, and having the camera fly around the fields is pretty cool. The fields aren't ordinary baseball fields--the kids play in an Everglades swamp, in a southwestern desert, and on a midwestern farm complete with a tornado and crop circles. We both really enjoy the humor of this game. I especially like the color commentary by Abner Doubleplay. My daughter enjoys the crazy power-up pitches.

We have an older Nvidia Gforce 3 card and have had no problems. I have heard that some older video cards aren't supported by the latest DirectX from Microsoft. Maybe that is the problem some people are having. I've always found Atari's tech support helpful when I gave them a call, though I haven't had to in a while.

The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is that I wanted to play with my gamepad, and the button mapping is quite awkward. Unlike other games I have that say they support controllers, there doesn't seem to be any way to remap the buttons. So we just use the mouse and keyboard. (My daughter doesn't mind. I'm the one who plays console sports games, so I'm used to a gamepad.)

Worth the effort!

I must say that although we initially had problems getting this game to run properly on my son's computer (an 800 Mhz PIII w/ATI 7500 running Windows ME), once we downloaded the latest drivers (the ones from just two months ago didn't work!), the game ran great! My son is 8 years old and he loves it - he's already up to the "Pro" difficulty level and is just starting to play the Season mode. It's fun watching him put together a team based on the kid's stats - this game is definitely teaching him a lot about Baseball! Highly recommend to anyone with a young baseball fan in the family!

Backyard Baseball 2005 is Awesome

This is a really great game. The things that make it a great game are:
* It has extremely fun power ups
* You can save the season play and have a 32 game career
* It has awesome graphics (watch for the cow being lifted into the flying saucer.

The things that need improvement are:
* I had trouble saving a coach at first because I didn't have priviledges to create a folder outside of My Documents. They should fix that.
* That's all until version 2006!

Really Fun!!!

This is the first Backyard Baseball game I have played, and I think it is cool!!! The grapics are all 3-D, which makes it really fun. There are some really fun and creative parks you can play in, and you even get to play with some of the most popular MLB players as kids. There is so much you can do on this game. You can even play a 18 or 32 game season and there is a world series at the end of it. You can also create your own players, which is really fun. I think this game is definetly worth the money. And if you think this is just a boy's game, your wrong. Im a girl and this game is cool!!!

I Thought the others were good!

I LOVE Backyard Baseball 2005! It's a great game! I thought it'd be fun to play Backyard Baseabll 2003 because I hadn't finished a season yet. It seems so BORING! Humongous (a.k.a Atari, Inforgrames.) did an excellent job of creating realistic 3-D worlds. There's only one that doesn't look 3-D. Because when I was doing the Home Run Derby, (one of the few mini-games in the program.) the baseball went right through to back of the setting! But otherwise, the 3-D graphics are so amazing! And it's even funner than the last one! Buy it, and have fun!

Don't have to be a kid

I didn't buy this for my kid. I'm 24 and I bought this because I liked the idea of having a simple, mouse-driven baseball game to play in boring lecture classes while I pretend to take notes.

Let me just say, if you enjoy baseball games at all, you'll like this game. Everything's been made cute and clean and colorful for kids, but underneath the shiny exterior is a very well made arcade baseball game. You have a variety of players that are rated in various categories, each with their own strength and weaknesses, to draft for your team. The game has a full, continuous-season mode that, while lacking any new rookies or trading mechanism, is still made fun thanks to the surprisingly complete statistic tracking and award certificates (which allow you to unlock new players.) You can make all the basic managerial decisions including deciding what positions to play players at, making pitching substitutions and setting your batting order.

And underneath what is a solid simulation-like package, rests a simple yet deep game. You have full control over pitching and fielding, a 3 dimensional strike zone for hitting, arcade-like power-ups for both pitching and hitting and variable difficulty levels which allow you to turn on and off things like a ball locator when batting.

All in all, if you're looking for an intense, simulation-driven baseball game that captures the feel of the majors, you probably never bothered even looking at this page. This, however, is a fun, arcade-style baseball game that does an excellent job of cutting out the more complicated things while keeping and executing all the essentials. I can't recommend it enough for anyone, no matter what their age.

What are these other reviewers talking about? It ROCKS!

I just got this game over the weekend and I can't believe how much fun it is. I like it a lot more than Baseball 2003 because now it is all 3D. If those other people are having problems they should try buying a new computer.

Season Play is great too because now I can unlock some more pros. I just got Piazza over yesterday. I also unlocked a robot called Clanky after playing one of the practice games. He is an awesome pitcher!

Back to playing.

this is the best!!

My nephew loves the new kids songs and the whole family likes the 3-d fields. One of them even has a movie playing on the screen!
