Not that big of an improvement over the original. This sequel is in a 'more of the same' vein. The additions are not that big a deal: there are a few new monsters. Most are pretty cut and dry, save for the fiendish Arch-Vile (who can both ressurect fallen foes and burn you up) and the new weapon.. the Super Shotgun... is a lovely upgrade, but more detail to upgrade would have carried a long way.

However, this does not make Doom 2 a 'bad' game. Yes, it is technically 'more of the same', but in the case of the Doom series, that is really a good thing.

The original Doom's gameplay was a thrilling ride with a few bumps along the way (namely: overbearing keycard hunting) and this sequel is no different.

Fails To Live Up To The Original.

DOOM probably had me hooked more than any other computer game; even Starcraft, Quake 3, etc. I still remember spending quite a bit of my computer time back in grade school blasting through Episode 3 Map 3 or Episode 2 Map 7, looking for different secrets and weapons. And when I wasn't doing that, I was happily playing multiplayer DOOM over the internet or downloading different "WAD" levels off various fansites. So when I finally decided to buy DOOM II, I was overjoyed to own what was supposedly an "improved" DOOM. I got the exact opposite...

First the good. The graphics do look a bit cleaner and less pixelated than in the original DOOM. There are several new enemies at your disposal (the dreaded Arch Viles being possibly the worst, as in most annoying, to ever grace a computer game). There is a new weapon (the double-barreled shotgun). And the levels this time around are a bit larger and more complex. Sounds like an "improvement" so far (albeit, very small). So why exactly did I dislike DOOM II?

The levels, while more complex, just aren't as well designed as they were in the original. They tend to get too maze-like in parts (more so than in DOOM 1), and the enemies seem like they were just randomly placed rather than thoughtfully put into certain parts of a level the way they were in the original DOOM (one minute you would be in a quite hallway, the next - CHOMP! a Bulldog Demon just came out of nowhere). Sadly, the best level in the game was IMO a bonus level titled Wolfenstein. It was sort of a remake of E1M1 from the original Wolfenstein 3D. Nazis, castle textures, and everything. But it's buried in a slew of horribly frustrating and/or boring levels like Suburbs and Circle Of Death (Lion King parody?), or possibly the worst experience I've ever had with an FPS - The Spirit World. Considering the fact that the "improvements" are so minor, do I even need to mention the game's feeling of "Been There, Done That"?

So in brief, I'm afraid I just couldn't really get into DOOM II. ID Software foolishly opted not to release a Shareware demo for the game, which means you had to spend [money] to play it back in 1995. Disappointing, since that money would have been much better spent on games like Dark Forces or the original System Shock.

This is the game to have!

I remember at one time I was addicted to Doom. To me it wasn't only about how fast you can complete the levels, it was about besting your score of each level. I miss it and I hope to get the Doom 3 XP version soon after it comes out. I do agree with other reviewers the graphic for the game were outstanding for its time(came out in the mid 90's me thinks). Anyway if like a good challenge then get a hold of Doom. If you like Wolfenstein these games are on the same level and very much addictive. Good fun.

Doom1 still better

I had tons of fun with this game in '95 and I still play it today, although I've beaten it many times. It is very predictable once you've played it a few times but the multiplayer experience is great. If you've got a slow computer and can't play Quake III or Unreal Tournament, or simply want some old fashioned fun then this is a great game for you.

really great game

this is the best shooter ive played so far (but im hopeing that doom 3 will be better) i like the new enemies and weapons like the super shotgun, the arch vile, and the fat guys with the cannon arms. the thing that always catches me is the fact that u can go around a corner, and all of a sudden a tough enemy like the baron of hell appears and jumps me. i been playing doom games since i was 5. there some of the greatest shooters next to james bond games and the new gamecube metroid games. i reccomend this game to any hardcore shooter fan, or anyone who enjoyed the first game

Doom 2... worth a look, but not a stare

My older brother and I have been playing the original "The Ultimate Doom" since we were toddlers. We've played through all the levels and we are truely die-hard fans.

However...

With our recent purchase of Doom II (yes I know, we're running a little behind the times) we were rather disappointed. Here's our thoughts...

The game is very well made, like the original. The graphics are decent, the sound effects are brilliant, the music is entertaining, and the gameplay is phenomenal. In addition, the game is WAY harder. It features a whole new arsenal of baddies (which are pretty funny because their graphics are much better than those of the original enemies so they stand out like sore thumbs). The new enemies are very creative. We particularly liked the big brown floating thing-a-ma-jigs that spit out the little flying skulls from the original game. All-in-all, those parts of the game are great.

The trouble resides in the "super-shotgun." The original shotgun was the staple weapon of the first Doom series, and likewise this new super-shotgun is the staple of the second. As a souped up, all encomposing, weapon of mass destruction, you'd think it would be pretty darn cool.

The problem is that it's been souped up in the wrong way. It fires a spread shot that no longer requires any accuracy at all. To compensate for this new kill-all gun, the folks at ID just made the monsters MUCH MUCH MUCH more difficult. However, all the style and the delicacy of the original is missing. Too much of the time, your being shot at by wickedly powerful attacks and you cannot even determine from where they came. You end up hiding and sneaking around corners and the like... and that's the exact reason why I used to play the original doom instead of the new breed of games like Quake. These new games are just not fun anymore.

PS: play Marathon 2... it was always better anyway ;-)

blast the helllike blood outta them

This game is truly a classic. Improvements over the last edition, especially in graphics, make this game even better! It us a lot of fun to play, and the gameplay is quite solid. This is a solid buy.

The doom series is the master king series
