THE GRAND DADDY OF THEM ALL

Behold! The game that makes you use your mind--in addtion to your machine gun. Although DREADFULLY primitive by today's standards, Metal Gear was a powerful force in the days of the NES. When most games like Contra and Guerilla War (both good games)emphasized run and gun shooting, Metal Gear introduced a new idea: How about a game where you can use stealth and wit to get past your enemies? Needless to say, the idea worked EXTREMELY well. Even if you've played Metal Gear Solid, you'll feel right at home playing this game. Solid Snake starts off the game with nothing but his bare fists, radio, and he even managed to get his cigarettes. The guards aren't all that smart, but they do sleep, hit switches, patrol, and hone in on you when you accidentally fire an un-silenced weapon. The weapon variety is nice in this game, too. Handgun, machine gun, rocket launcher, grenade launcher, mines, etc. There is also a large variety of items like oxygen tanks, door cards, cardboard box, rations, etc. The door card system is annoying, though, because you have 10 cards or so, and you have to patiently go through each one of them to find out which one opens what door. The graphics are nothing special, but the atmosphere will remind you of Metal Gear Solid. Music is only average as well. The storyline makes up for the other two, though. If you haven't played this great classic, you need to do so. You're missing out.

Metal Gear

Although this game is made for regualar Nintendo, I love it because it is the start of a beautiful game sequence. For anyone who still has a NES laying around their house, I recommend this item for everyone over the age of six. You play as the super stealth soldier Solid Snake in stopping the nuclear weapon Metal Gear with over two hours of Metal Gear action.

Metal Gear is a must have for any Metal Gear or Metal Gear Solid fan.

Metal Gear was originally developed for the MSX (a computer popular in Japan and Europe from the mid-80's to early 90's) by famed designed Hideo Kojima. It was his first released title, and partially due to the limitations of the hardware at the time he was "forced" to create a new kind of war game, inventing the Tactical Espionage Action genre in the process.

The Japanese version received high praise, so it was translated to English and released in Europe. This version kept many of Kojima-san's ideas in place, but did not include the majority of the original text.

After release in Japan and Europe, Konami felt it was time to release the game on consoles and Metal Gear was "ported" to the Nintendo Entertainment System. They completely remade the game, trying to inject humor were it was not due and mocking what Kojima presented in story. This version was also noted for its atrocious translation, including such memorable lines as "I feel asleep!!" and "I goofed! The lorry have started to move!!!"

In conclusion, this really is a decent game, but is far overshadowed by Kojima's other games. After his MSX Metal Gear he went on to make the EXCELLENT Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake also for MSX, as America got the series black sheep Snake's Revenge. MG2 was only released in Japanese, but has since been unofficially translated to English - I recommend you look into it, as well as the first MSX game.

As far as a review, this game (like Snake's Revenge) starts out in a jungle and is fairly difficult to move through and reach the actual base. While Kojima's version had a stronger emphasis on stealth and intellect, this game is also not just a typical action game and does not completely go against the MSX game's style. If you cannot get a hold of Kojima's version this is a poor substitute but better then never experiencing the origin of the now blockbuster Metal Gear series.

I love the Metal Gear Solid games that are currently on a PlayStation exclusive series.Metal Gear Solid 3 is the best game in the series yet,Metal Gear Solid 2 2nd and Metal Gear Solid third.I got my chance to play the original Metal Gear after i sold my old MGS3:Snake Eater and bought the new Subsistence edition which actually includes the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake amongst other features such as special theater,secret theater and Online mode aswell as the "Snake Eater" game.
Anyways Metal Gear is actually a good game,its the first mission Solid Snake does.He is sent to infiltrate a terrorist base under the commands of Big Boss(Big Boss is the protagonsit of MGS3).
He ultimately leads to meeting his first Metal Gear,which is called MG TX-55,aswell as finding himself infiltrating Outer Heaven.For an old 2D game from the 80`s-MG is quite a good game and I see that the newer 3D Metal Gear games are very faithful to the its roots.
The graphics are BLAH as its a goddamn 1980`s 2D game,its audio is typical,but the story and gameplay on to bad.
In the game as Snake you are not to be seen by an enemy guard,or else he will call his comrades to give you a hard time.You can use stealth,although its hard for a birdseye view game its still good to use.
Its canonical sequel-Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake,which is also included in the MGS3:Subsistence package,is a much better game than MG1,its a TRUE improvement.
So if you want to try MG1 and MG2:SS and you have a PS2,by all means buy Metal Gear Solid 3:Subsistence,which you also get Online and the Snake Eater game.MGS3:Subsistence is 30$,cheaper than usual new games.

This is one of the first games I received for the Nintendo when I was a child. I had no idea what Metal Gear was or what the series would become. I just knew I had a new game and I wanted to play it. This was my first introduction to the character Solid Snake and his world of infiltration and tactical espionage.

In Metal Gear you play as Solid Snake, a rookie to the Fox Hound branch of the military. You are to infiltrate a jungle fortress called Outer Heaven and initially rescue Fox Hound members including one of the top operatives: Grey Fox. While it is always great fun to fight and to shoot the guards, it is more effective to be able to sneak around them (this will be perfected in later Metal Gear games). Stealth is important. Shooting with a weapon not equipped with a silencer is a risky move.

As you progress through Outer Heaven you are sent on further missions and must fight ever more difficult bosses (tanks, men with machine guns, etc). You begin the mission with nothing but your bare hands and a pack of cigarettes. As you continue to play, you must acquire various weapons and items and use them to progress through the game. While not as detailed as Metal Gear Solid (PSX), the original Metal Gear is a game worth playing for fans of the series (to get to experience the origins of the story discussed in later games) as well as for fans of classic Nintendo game.

Not bad. Pretty good actually.

Metal Gear for the NES is without a doubt a pretty good game and even for those like me who started off with MGS on the PSX, this game is actually pretty good and easily one of the best NES games of its time.

However, even for NES I'm not at all pleased with the dialogue at all. Somehow when it got translated we someone get stuff like "I feel sleepy" and "The truck have started to move". Other than this the rest of the game is pretty fun.

The gameplay of this game is pretty hard although I'm not quite sure why people have to over-exaggerate the difficulty of this game. While it's hard it isn't "Impossible"...it's not even "Hard as all hell" and it isn't even "Harder than MGS and MGS2 on Extreme". The game is fun but still this is overstressed. I found the game to be quite easy-going in the long run. It starts off pretty hard but the game gets progressively easier, especially with some of the glitches present.

The most rewarding part of this game for me was just seeing how MGS came about. Several elements are taken but it's clear to see how it's changed as well. Parts of this gameplay can get pretty frustrating. Such as the fact that you have to cycle through your card keys to open a door and then there's the classic "Come out of a room and be discovered instantly" bit.

Overall this game is still pretty good and while it's age definitely shows, it's nothing to bash on the game about.

Hideo Kojima the creator of metal gear was NOT involved in making this version of metal gear! Check wikipedia if you are doubtful. This game was made by money grubbing game makers.

Unlike all other metal gear games this one isn't about trying to be stealthy. It's an imitation of a run n'shoot type game. I repeat the creator of metal gear was not even involved in this. It's only metal gear by name.
