Fun at first and then boring forever

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 14 / 17

I gave this game 2 stars for the fun aspect. I had creating my sim, picking a pet, and being able to cook different foods using different combinations of available ingredients. But overall I have to give it one star for several reasons:

First are the bugs that aren't completely worked out, the music will go silent frequently then randomly turn on again, and as someone else mentioned, it sometimes freezes.

The second reason is that the game controls aren't very good. You find yourself having to cancel lots of directions you give your sim because when you tapped on an object or more frequently a customer, just tapping on the DS screen once will bring up the interaction options and then select whatever interaction was underneath the area you tapped. You could unintentionally argue with your clients (why would you do that to someone you just met anyway?) I also have a big problem with the fact that everytime you finish with an animal at one of the stations (i.e. the grooming station, the training area, the bath, or the diagnosis table) the animal is put away and you have to go open the kennel and retrieve the animal again. It's also an incredible hassle to search through your item inventory. The inventory list shows only 4 items per screen (not with pics, with words) and there is no method to the madness. Your food is mixed with your pet supplies and your toys and your furniture and the pet decorations and your recipes and if that's not cluttered enough, your houses land is listen on there, as well as your pet if you put it in the storage bin too. (Poor neglected Spot).

Despite all of this I think the games biggest flaw is the poor playability. I something that makes a game great is that you can play it over and over again and it's always at least somewhat entertaining even if it isn't constantly dynamic. I've played for a total of about 5 hours which is about a calendar month in Sims world. Thus far I've only treated about 18 animals and all of them have either had worms, fleas, or the flu. Each animal has to be treated at least three times (once per Sim day for three days) and for some reason this is the case even if you buy the more expensive Super flea shampoo or more expensive worm medicine. It got very repetitive, very quickly and even though I was finally able to save enough scratch to increase the volume of my business, I found myself asking.. "Why?" The customers came in droves as with them the endless stream of familiar and monotonous tasks.

I was quite disappointed with this game because I've always been so satisfied with the all of the Sims line of games so far. If you really feel you MUST play this game, I highly recommend renting a copy first.

Sloppy put together game with lots of faults

Cons in this game:
- Limited dialogue repeated over and over
- Limited customize options for Sims and Pets, limited Pet names (it's annoying having 2 Shelby pets at the same time)
- Limited animations, Sim will get in the shower with clothes on but never showers
- The Sim you control is forced to sleep until next day because the clinic closes at 5 PM, which leaves no"free-time" or extra time with patients
- Park is useless because you can do the same things at home
- Awful cooking system.
- Limited diseases and treatments

You get to name your sims "Dr" something, in my case Kyo, and Kyo is forced to adopt a pet when he first starts the clinic. I didn't see why, I made a pet and then I put it in the storage area, because he took up place in the kennel. (you can only have 3 patients at a time). Anyway, as soon as you wake up a patient arrives. The discussions are so limited:

Kyo: Hello
Owner: Hello
Kyo: How are you?
Owner: I'm good / I don't feel good / I'm bored, I had to wait forever
Kyo: How's your pet?
Owner: He looks ill / he looks sick / he smells / he is ugly
Kyo: Okay, let's take a look.

That's how limited discussions are, and besides some comments from your own Sim (also limited), the conversations are the same over and over.

Anyway, you examine the pet and you should determine it's illness with different tools.
Stetoscope for illness, brush them to see if they have fleas, feed them to see if they have worms and x-ray for swallowed objects or broken bones.
What annoys me to no end are two things about this.
1: There's a "friend" meter on you and the pet, everytime you use something to examine them the meter goes down drastically and the pet runs around like a maniac making it hard to examine them, so you have to chase them with the stylus. The other way around, the only way to make friends with them is to feed them or pet them (annoyingly, if you pet them "wrong", they hate you), and the meter goes up really slow, so there's really no reason to try being friends with the pet.
2: No matter how many times you treat a pet, you never learn to see the signs before doing the examination, forcing you to do them over and over. The pets arrive looking just fine. My "favorite" part about the game is, you start examining a pet and it runs around the table like you're going to kill it. No flue, brush it but no fleas, it keeps running and running...
Then you take an x-ray and it shows the dog has a broken leg - and the dog starts limping! Then you admit it, when you look at it in the kennel it BOUNCES up and down. Then when you take it to the grooming table, it suddenly starts limping again. Talk about lazy animators!
The same goes for illness, the pets starts to "cough" when you've diagnozed it, but no signs of coughing before that. It's annoying and looks stupid.
I also found it unneccesary to bandage the dog like a mummy, when they've only broken their leg. I was embaressed when the owner showed up and their put looked like a mummy!

Some of the illnesses in the game can easily be treated at home, I mean, come on, why would you take your pet to the vet if it is UGLY?! Yes, they come in and say "My pet is ugly!", and the only "cure" is to dress the pets up in silly costumes. I don't like seeing pets in silly costumes, so I refuse to treat any of those pets, but the only option I have is "Send to a specialist". Why would somebody need a specalist for that?!
Also about the specialist part, when your kennel is full, you can't take anymore patients, you need to send the new patients to the specialist, but you HAVE TO go through the whole introduction before you can send them to the specialist. Couldn't you have a sign that said you couldn't take more patients so no more patients would arrive?
And sometimes the dog/cat is just dirty and need a scrubbing, who bothers a vet with that??.

The game seems uncomplete to me, it tells you to not let pet needs go down to low or the owners will be unhappy, but as soon as I've treated the animals, I just ignore them. As long as "Healhty" is displayed, ownes don't care if I've ignored their pets for days. Their appearence are zero since I don't dress the pets up, but I never recieve a complaint or less payment. It also works the other way around, even if I spend loads of time making the pets happy, I don't recieve any additional payment/bonuses, so I never play with the pets since it's beyond boring. The same goes for Hillary Duff, even though the game makes a big deal of treating celebrity pets, nothing special happens. Same dialog, same payment, same treatments.
The game also tells you to look after your own pet, I just put it in the storage area and haven't seen it since. It dosen't die either, it remains in your inventory forever.
Also, you can purchase "Flea Schampoo" and "ultra flea schampoo", but they don't have different effects, you have to still treat the animal for 3 days.

I don't think this game is fun at all. You can't take your pets for a walk all you can do is train them and be a vet. very boring I would not buy this it is not fun like other sims games.

It's the WORST game EVER!

Sims 2 Pets is the worst game ever. When your person gets hungry, and you don't have food, then you go shopping. But it says you have to get food by trading it with other people who also have the game. But if no one else has the game, then you can't get food. Then you starve. It's the most boring game ever.

A disappointment, to the greatest extent.

I am a big fan of the Sims, and have been since the first hit the shelves. Due to past experience, I thought I would love the new game. However, I found i was immeadiately diasppointed.

It starts with you as a veternarian. It ends...it never ends. And you are still a vet. You get to make your own pet, sure, but it doesn't do anything. You treat patients, sleep, use the restroom, cook eggs, treat patients, get new patients (with the same problems),...and so it continues.

The two biggest disappointments were: bad graphics, and no socializing.

Addressing the lack of socialization: the Sims has always been something fun- you can manipulate your sims to the greatest extent, creating complex webs of friendship and love. In the Sims2 Pets (for DS), none of that is possible. The most you ever do is toss a ball at your pet.

A pet that is square, or freakishly proportioned, or even half tan, half black. The graphics are terrible, way below Sims standards. Creating pets is bad, as well. You can choose what they look like. At first, the coat blending option sounds fun- make a calico, right? Unfortunately, it just takes the front half of one coat and the back half of another and plasters them on your not-so-cute little pet.

Designing sims has always seemed to have endless oppourtunities: outfits, faces, personalities. Again, the bad graphics come into play. However, you are provided with a bleak selection for sim customization. A couple of shirts, which are nice, but there is no great variety of clothing. Hair is okay. Nothing more, just okay.

I would absolutely not recommend this product to anyone. Instead, try something better like the first Sims2 or the Sims Urbz. Don't waste your money on this, though.

I like making the pets, but there's not much to the game. You'll get bored real fast.

Like other reviews posted both my husband and I are fans of the Sims PC games. So we figured that our 10 year old daughter would love this game. We were wrong. After tring to play the game ourselfs we found it to be borning and quite hard to grasp onto the concept of the game, esp for a younger child. I would not recommend.

Good concept but...

I was intrigued by the veterinary practice concept, but I was expecting it to be more like Trauma Center: Under the Knife. This game is very repetitive. Basically, all you do is give flea baths or flu and worm meds. Some people even bring their pet to you complaining that it's ugly, and you have to dress them up in a bumblebee costume or a tux and top hat. Creating your own meal was an interesting addition, but also got old quickly. There are no relationships in the game. You can only leave your house/office to go to the park to interact with other people and their pets, which means nothing because, again, there are no relationships in this game. Also your day is done at 5pm when your vet office closes, so no leisure time after work. Fortunately, after being incredibly disappointed with Sims 2 for DS, I decided to rent this one before buying it, and I'm glad I did. I'll stick with the Sims on PC.
