Great Game

Being a fan of Romero's original Dawn of the Dead, I was hot to buy this game when it came out, even to the point of buying a whole new system (the 360), but hesitated because of reviews that warned that you don't have time to explore the mall and have fun on your own, you have to do the 'cases'. I'm here now to tell you that is not true. The game is designed to let you play it as you want. If your goal is to 'finish' the game, so you can brag to your friends that you 'passed' it, then you will indeed have a difficult and frustrating time. But this game is BEST enjoyed by throwing out the walkthroughs and just playing on your own. It's as free-form as gaming gets, and that's what I was hoping for with this title. It's a lot more fun to discover stuff on your own in this game than to follow the advisory 'walkthroughs' available online and in the official guidebook. Besides, you won't be able to complete the game until you are levelled up anyway. This occurs by simply playing and getting points for doing things you would naturally do without advice from anyone. So ignore all the bad reviews from kids who are only interested in bragging to their friends that they 'conquered' the game. And after all, is THAT really worth bragging about? There are some points that are made in reviews that are quite valid, but should not dissuade you from buying this game. The ONE save slot was not a good idea. In order to level up you will be forced to go back to the beginning all over again many, many times, and even WITH the skip to the next feature with the start button, it takes a full five minutes to get back in the mall to start over (with a better level and abilities).Another bad idea was no option to enlarge the type of the script parts. It IS unreadable on over 99% of TVs it will be played on. Another is that there is no option to turn off Otis's transceiver, and it constantly rings. It is really a pain to answer the transceiver only to have the text message he give you be UNREADABLE due to small text size!!These are bugs that Capcom, with all their experience in producing videogames, should have ironed out before releasing it.But even so, since there is no other game like it, it still is worth purchasing. I've been playing it for a couple of weeks now and, while I've seen most of the mall and used 99% of the weapons (some are only availble after defeating certain 'bosses'.) I have only tapped, I would say, 25% or less of the game. I hope Capcom releases another mall-zombie game but with the problems ironed out and even more freedom (options to play 'boss-free', etc.)

Luis Mejia (son) - free violenece has always been carried out by capcom in several famous titles, but overall there were to many monotonous titles that carried out a short plot but convincing action, but maybe non of these were displayed as original, interesting, complete, long, fun and difficult as Dead Rising prooves to be; overall, a unique sandbox. Dead rising, first of all, its such an interesting title even before buying it, and this is proven in the gameplay; its plot turns around a reporter, Frank, who is doing a coverage for the news of why a town in Colorado has been closed by the police, effectively, the town was plagued by zombies. Frank has a number of adventures in the mall he arrives, and you have three hours of totoal gameplay before your helicopter arrives. In the mall he goes to a safe zone, and also meet a pair of agents from homeland security and a surviving janitor, in which you can accomplish their missions and complete cases files. The gameplay is a sandbox, which permits you to roam around the mall, complete cases, missions, activities, change clothes, or simply roam around in any order you like, and every action you make is affective to the gameplay. The cool part is killing zombies with anything you like, either punches or chainsaws, sledgehammers, pipes, grass choppers, and a variety of objects. In the missions, you can complete cases missions, which is the main plot, or go saving survivors, but the peculiarity of these is that its not all common rescuing survivors, in some cases, you may find psychopaths. These psychopaths are survivors who are mad, corrupt, evil, or had gone crazy for the situation. Overall, dead rising will result as a breathtaking thriller fun for any teen or mature player.

So, the game seems perfect, but its far from it; the hughe mistakes:

- The saving system and way of carrying out the plot. For being a sandbox, the game gives you a time limit of gameplay, but the thing is that you get different levels for you to level up and become stronger, so you save, you want to play again and, surprise! there's no saved game, just your level and dressing is saved, so you have to start all over all the time each time you die or turm off your console. This can be EXTREMELY dissapointing at first, but believe me, after you carry out some levels, it'll be much fun.

- The technical glitches: the game was made in a format just for flat screens, if you have one, no problem ignore this part, but if you don't, the letters of the dialogue are very small and almost unreadable.

Huge dissapointment

When i first got this game, i was filled with excitment and couldn't wait to play. When i first encountered the god awful save system, it was officially ruined for me. You can save at the very beginning, but then all the so called save points are no where to be found. You are forced to repeat everything you do several times in hopes of finally saving your progress, but those hopes go down the toilet. Worth a rental, but defenitly not 60 bucks.

Its new and great,

Ok i agree that the saving system is a bit stupid and hard to get by but once you get aside that its pretty fun. The zombies are cool and there are quite a few different models so you sometimes see the same looking zombie every now and then but what gets me past that is the amount of zombies in the game (54,593 total. and they respawn so your never on short supply) and the situations you can get yourself into.

the story is not oscar-worthy but still good enough for any die-hard zombie fan. you can drive some vehicles (dont drive the motorcyle cause that can get you killed) and other things like a cart, but since that once you get a some movable object like a cart it reverses the controls. but i sometimes feel is really fun to run over thousands and thousands of zombies with a car is fun.

OK ill do a quick run down of the game(opiniated so dont get pissy over it)-

graphics-9
gameplay-10
story-7
replay value-10
sound-9
learning curve-3 (which means easy to remember controls)

so i recommend this game to anyone who likes zombie movies and the genre of survival horror (i feel the genre of the game is more of a survival horror/comedy like game) and anyone who likes not stop action.

Highly Addictive Zombie Killing Mayhem

Greetings,

Dead Rising is highly addictive. I have played this game for hours. You want to put the controller down, but a part of you desires to play longer an see what's next. The latter tends to win over the former.

I have played many survival horror games. Dead Rising re-invents the genre very well. There are no annoying puzzles. Weapons are everywhere. Defeating enemies is challenging, but you won't rip out your hair trying to defeat them. The storyline has several original elements, which is touch since this is a game about zombies. Best of all, a player doesn't have to find every secret or save every survivor in order to achieve the best ending. They player just has to solve the main cases and beat the clock.

The most important thing to consider is Dead Rising uses a MELEE COMBAT system. Guns are in the game, but they are not very useful. The best weapons are the Katana, the Baseball Bat, the Bench, the Soccer Ball, and the clown's Short Chainsaw. (It has a wider strike range than a standard chainsaw.) If you must have a gun, the Shotgun is the way to go.

Therefore, if you are a person that likes to run and gun, this isn't the game for you.

If you love to punch, bash, slice, and smash things, definitly buy this game.

Here are a few things to note.

1-- You can only have one save per Gamer ID. There are no limits to saving, but you can't have multiple saves under the same name. If you want to try different paths and strategies, you have to either return to your saved point or restart from Day #1.

2-- You character levels up throughout the game. If you die, you can transfer your progress into a new game. This is good, because you will need to be around Level 20 in order to make real progress though the game. Leveling up is easy too. It just takes a little patience.

3-- There are characters that you can rescue in the game. Rescuing people helps you level up very quickly. Unfortunately, the AI for the the characters is terrible. They get lost. They are slow. Some have to be carried or lead by the hand. They don't say away during boss battles. Thank goodness, saving people is not required to get the best ending.

4-- The story takes plays over the course of several days. Sometimes, you have to stand around and wait for events to happen. This can be annoying at times.

5-- This is an XBox 360 game. That means it looks best on a High Definition TV. If you do not have HDTV, you should rent this game first. Make sure you can live with how the game looks on your screen.

On a sale of 0.0 to 5.0, with 5.0 being the top...

I am shocked at how bad these people are rating this game

I have to admit. I bought my xbox 360 ONLY for this game so far. I was so nervous because I was waiting to buy the xbox and then noticed all these bad reviews. after I got the game, I said What the ++++? This game is incredible. whats with these people talking about the controls first off? Its like they are making it seem like the guy is a vegatable or something. I think it is amazing at what you can do. You can throw an object or you can just keep it in your hand and just keep bashing a zombie. No problems for me. Secondly about the save issues. There are a few restrooms in the game. Obviously people havent played it for about 10mins I guess not to be able to find a save. Only thing that the reviewers are right about is the text. you cannot read it. But to me, the game is so logical that there is no point having to read it. You have one of the people on your side talking to you, then you have someone shooting at you right after. I am assuming your partner is telling you to LOOK OUT. and HERES A GUN because I did not have a gun until after speaking to him. So basicly you do not really have the need of reading the text. Ive done well so far without it although it would have been better if I could read it. But you cant expect the game to be perfect but for what it is, you will not find a better game that is more creative and extremely gorgeous graphics which some people in here has regret to inform in here so far. well worth 59.99. couldnt see how they could sell it cheaper being someone put a lot of time and effort in the graphics and game play.

One other comment. Already reading this, you guys must already think My fav games are resident evil which is true. My fav is resident evil 4 of the series. This game is by far different from the resident evil line.when you play this a little bit you will already know there is going to be a zombie everywhere you turn around except for the restrooms and the top floors of the building and atop of the building.A Little different than resident evil because the resident evil series is that you do not know what to expect to happen next. This is more of a shoot em up and fighting zombie game more than an average story line but that makes it unique. Kinda surprised of that coming from CAPCOM. but they stand behind the Resident evil series so when I noticed the CAPCOM name I knew it would be good

Killing zombies is a fun activity, and Capcom certainly knows that. The makers of the immensely popular Resident Evil series return with a new zombie fest, Dead Rising, exclusively for Microsoft's XBox 360. Unlike Resident Evil, however, Dead Rising is not exactly a "survival horror" game. Survival, yes, since the game requires you to stay alive for as long as possible, so that you can discover the truth behind a zombie infestation in a fictitious town in Colorado. Horror, not a hint of it, since the zombies are more comical than scary. Still, the game takes the zombies genre, and throw them into a free-roaming, sandbox adventure environment, and the result is remarkable. In fact, Dead Rising is so good, it has already taken its place in my top five games of the year.

Playing as freelance photojournalist Frank West, you begin the game by stumbling upon a military quarantine in the sleepy town of Willamette. Sensing something amiss, you hire a chopper to take you up for an overview of the happenings in the town. Not surprisingly, you see zombies everywhere, and you decide that you should infiltrate the area to find out more, just so that you can take some pictures for your story. You land on a helipad on the rooftop of a shopping mall, instruct the pilot to return in three days, and begin your quest to the truth surrounding this mess.

With the pilot due to return in three days, you've 72 hours (in-game time - 24 hours in the game take roughly two real hours to complete) to solve the mystery, Very soon into the game, you'll get to meet many survivors from the zombies onslaught, and some of these people will be involved in the "cases" of this game. To find out the truth, you'll need to complete all these cases (eight of them in all), and be at the helipad at the agreed time when the pilot returns. While doing cases, you'll also come across scoop missions, which are optional side quests that fill up the gaps in between (and sometimes contradicting) cases. Scoops usually take the form of escorting survivors, but they also involve the occasional fetch missions, and boss fights.

The game plays like an action RPG, as Frank earns Prestige Points (PP) as you progress. Solving cases, doing scoops and fight bosses obviously bring in the bulk of the PP. However, you can also earn additional PP by doing simple things like heating up a stove in the restaurant, and taking a space ride in the wonderland of the mall. The mall itself is reasonable large enough for exploration, but you'd probably not have enough time to see it all if you intend to get the best ending for the game, since the compulsory missions are all time-based, and have time limits. For example, if the game requires you to be at a certain location at a certain time to initiate a case, not being there at that time will render all future cases expired, and "the truth will vanish into the darkness". Such is the pressure exerted by Capcom, you'd probably have to replay the game a few times to explore the various secrets and Easter Eggs that are littered around in the mall.

This game also has a highly publicized save system. For the uninitiated, the game only allows one save slot, which tends to make things more difficult than they should. Since missions are time-sensitive, there's always the possibility of saving your game at a "wrong time", thus rendering all future cases redundant if you didn't give yourself enough time to start the next case. Capcom have admitted that this is a deliberate move to up the game's difficulty level, but despite the kind intentions, it still feels like a cheap move to lengthen the game's eight hours (if you're going for the best ending) of gameplay. Nevertheless, if you've to restart the game all over again (which I did), take heart that you'll at least keep your current level, skills and statistics for the new game. These make it easier to blast through missions already completed before in a faster fashion.

Apart from slaying zombies and rescuing survivors, there are also some useless, but fun things to do in the mall. For example, the game includes plenty of outfits for you to change into. Don't like the costume that you begin with? No worries. Head down to any of the plazas, and check out the shops there. Chances are, you'll find something that suits your tastes. Don't like your hair color? Well, you can dye your hair. Want some cool accessories? How about some sunglasses and caps? It's all in the mall, and it'd take you some time before you can wear them all. If you're absolutely free, and aren't concerned with solving the cases, you can go on a run like this just to try out all the available clothes. The game also has unlockable costumes, usually unlocked after you gain an achievement. One of these is a Mega Man costume, and the accompanying Mega Buster. Fancy running around the mall, and shooting zombies as Mega Man? You can do it, if you manage to do the required achievements.

Clothes are not the only distraction in the game. The mall also has a collection of food, and eating them all results in another achievement unlocked. Food replenishes your health, and mixing them with a blender will also create juices that you can use to fight better. For example, mixing two packets of milk will create the Quickstep Juice, which allows you to run faster than normal. Trying out the different combination for juices, as such, become another sidetrack task to do.

To make the task of killing zombies less tedious, Capcom also throws in plenty of weapons at your disposal. You'll begin with simple baseball bats and 2X4s, but as you progress, almost everything that can be held in your hands will become your weapons. Handguns, chainsaws and even stuffed toys are just some of the example of the wide array of arsenal at your disposal. Whether you prefer melee style fighting, or long-range FPS style of taking down your opponents, Dead Rising will have something for you. It also helps when the killing processes are so beautifully presented.

Talking about presentations, Dead Rising is a game that combines great graphics and audio effects. The colors are vibrant, and are a joy to look at. The music scores are great, throwing in different themes for different areas of the mall. The voice-acting is awesome, telling the story superbly without sounding awkward. In a nutshell, the presentation is what you'd expect from a next-gen game. Unfortunately, Capcom have taken this next-gen thing a little too far, by including texts that can only be read legibly on a HDTV. Yes, we know that this is a next-gen game, but not everyone owns a HDTV. What's wrong with having a SDTV option for people like, you know, us? Also, while voice-overs are included for the cut-scenes, the in-game conversations are all text-based. If you don't have a HDTV, chances are you'll miss out some parts of the story, just because Capcom got lazy.

Still, Dead Rising is a really great game despite its flaws. Its issues are unfortunate (and you can tell Capcom about them by doing an online survey), but it strengths make it a must-play if you own an X360. Just make sure you save up for a HDTV if you want a better experience.

GREAT GAME, ALMOST PERFECT.

OK I JUST FINISHED THE GAME AND I GOT THE "GOOD" ENDING. THE GOOD THING IS THAT THERE ARE 7 DIFFERENT ENDINGS DEPENDING ON DIFFERENT THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO.
OK THE GAME AT THE BEGINNING TURNS PRETTY HARD MAYBE IT WAS JUST ME BUT AT THE BEGINNING I COULDNT GET THE HANDLE OF IT, AT SOME POINT I GOT VERY MUCH INVOLVED WITH THE STORYLINE AND THE GAME ITSELF ITS PRETTY ADICTIVE I COULDNT PUT IT DOWN FOR A WHOLE WEEK, NOW I HAVE TO FINISH IT 6 MORE TIMES TO GET ALL THE ENDINGS AND LET ME TELL YOU ITS GOING TO BE MORE FUN NOW THAT YOU KNOW ALL THE GAME.
NOW WHY 4 STARS INSTEAD OF 5? THE SAVE GAME PROGRESS CAN BE VERY FRUSTRATING BECAUSE FOR INSTANCE IM ABOUT TO FIGHT A BOSS AND HE KILLS ME I HAVE TO DO ALL THE WAY BACK TO HIM AGAIN AND SOMETIMES IS VERY FAR AWAY OR I KILL THE BOSS AND IN THE WAY TO SAVE I GET KILLED YOU HAVE TO DO ALL THE WAY TO HIM AND KILL HIM AGAIN AND A MAJOR FLAW ARE THE SUBTITLES WHEN SOMEONE IS TALKING TO YOU WHY THEY ARE SO SMALL? IF THE SUBTITLES ARE SO SMALL AT LEAST PUT THE VOICES TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I BEEN TOLD A LOT OF TIMES I COULDNT READ ANYTHING ON THE SCREEN AND I HAVE A 29 INCHES T.V I CANT IMAGINE THEM IN A SMALLER TV. THE GRAPHICS ARE PRETTY DECENT AND THE ZOMBIES LOOKS ARE VERY CONVINCING.
IF YOU ARE A FAN OF HORROR AND SPECIALLY ZOMBIES THIS IS YOUR GAME. PRETTY GOOD ALMOST PERFECT AND VERY VERY ADDICTIVE TRUST ME.

Diffrent from anything i have played but fun

I love the concept of the game. It gets pretty hectic with a time limit on everything you do. It is one of those games that you play awhile put it done for awhile then pick it up again. Overall a great game with a great concept. I am eager to see if they make a second one.
