One of the best games EVER!

I have played this game so much, I have even dreamnt about it! LOL There is so much to do & so many ways to play. There's horror, gore & even a bit of humor. If you get bored rescuing survivors & doing the case missions, you can grab a car, go into the maintenance tunnel & plow down some zombies!

The Best Zombie Game Ever...Period.

With the idiotically fun 'Zombies Ate my Neighbors' right next to it, Dead Rising is, well, [the title of this review]. It's bloody, it's gritty, and has a certain humor in it. Oh and just so as you know, this game isn't based off of any of George Romero's terrific zombie movie classics. Anyway...
You assume the roll of Frank West, a hot-shot free lance photographer, who got a tip that something weird was going on in the small (made up) town of Willamette, Colorado. When you arrive there by helicopter, you are left stranded in a near-by mall literally swarming with thousands upon thousands of zombies. Your goal? Find out the scoop of what exactly happened here, in 3 days.

-FEATURES-
One of the main things that Dead Rising tries emphasize the most is that practically anything you can lay your hands on is a weapon. These items span from firearms, construction tools, sport items, chairs, wine barrels, soccer balls, rocks, bench presses, lawn mowers, cars, brooms, clothes hangers, ketchup bottles...do I need to say more? That's not all. While you are in the mall you can put on different kinds of clothes and accessories to customize Frank. You can also take pictures of stuff with your camera. If you get a good picture you get Prestige Points (or PP). These points allow you to level up in the game, basically, allowing you to learn new hand-to-hand moves, increase you health or item inventory, and make you stronger. You can also find survivors in the mall and bring them back to the Security Room (the only 'safe house' of the mall) so that you can earn PP and unlock certain achievements. But be warned, saving these people comes at a terrible (and aggravating) price, which I'll tell you about later. Oh, and don't beleive the people who say the graphics aren't that good. They're actually very good! The zombies are really cool in this game, where sometimes hundreds of zombies appear on screen at once! Just about no two zombies look the same. There is whole variety of zombies: fat zombies, old zombies, ethinic zombies, zombies with missing appendeges, etc.. There are also side quests that you can take part in, these are called "Scoops". Scoops allow you save people, get certain items, earn PP, or even challenge one the many Pscychopaths (Bosses) of the game. Oh, here's a word of advice. If you are not properly equiped, these well scipted wako-baskets can be pretty tough. Well, does this game sound pretty difficult to you yet? Well get this, you also timed through out the duration of the game. Like I said, Dead Rising takes place over the course of 3 days, or 72 hours. Basically, for every 90 (or so) seconds that goes by in the real world, 10 minutes go by in game. Which brings up something I didn't mention. There are a slew of different endings you can get in this game. So the replay is incredibly high. In nut shell, you play Dead Rising in a bunch of different ways. Go on an all out zombie killing spree, find as many survivers as possible, or stick to the story.

-THE BAD-
Yes, this game is in need of some improvement. Remember when I said saving people comes at a terrible price? Well it's true, because, to put it in a nut shell, their really, really stupid. Sometimes they won't follow you, they'll engage in combat with other zombies (even when they're totally unarmed), and their all a bunch of whiners. Also the save system could have been a lot better. You can only save in the Security Room or in the seriously scatted bathrooms across the mall. Also you can only save one game file. In order to have another file for someone else, you have to create a whole other Xbox 360 profile, and that can take up some space on your MU/Hardrive. Sometimes the inventory can be frustrating, mainly for firearms. If you want more shot-gun ammo, you need to put another whole shot-gun in you inventory, instead of having spare ammo for it. Shooting or throwing projectiles might get a few pissed. If you played Resident Evil 4, aiming is basically the same here in Dead Rising. You can't move when your aiming, basically. Plus, did I mention that the survivors are retards?

-Dead Rising 2?-
Like I said, this game has a lot different endings. But when you get the true ending, it blatantly sets up for a sequel. If Capcom does make a DR2 (hopefully), I hope that it has multiplayer, a lot more weapons, character creation, item customization, and survivors with a great IQ.

-Summary-
All in all, Dead Rising is a great game, in need of some improvement. Don't worry, a lot of great games need at least some bit of improvment, this just happens to be one of them. Before I forget, this game isn't meant to scare you. Dead Rising is no where close to a horror game. It would probably be considered scary to old people and babies. The game is light on horror but heavy in survival. If you're into zombies and have a 360, stop reading this pointless review and get this game now. I mean it! Do it! Although if you're not into zombies rent it or think about buying. I'm glad I did.

[-NOTE TO PARENTS-]
This is probably the goriest game ever made. Heads popping off/exploding, disembowelment, and more. There's use alcohol and some strong language. Keep this game as far away as you can from your 5-12 year-olds.

great idea poorly designed

The actual things you do in the game a fun but this game suffers from several design flaws that may leave you frustrated and bored. And here they are.

1. you have one save slot and save places are not always around right after you finish a big challenge. This is also a problem because you may have several challenges to complete and you can't just go back and do them in a different order to complete.
2. The game is not the 70 something hours it that the game sets a sa time limit. I burned through 20 hours in about 5 hours. Time moves quick and you lose 15 minutes every time you move to a different load area. This means you don't have the time to complete tasks or just to have fun killing zombies.

3. A big problem I had was the text that gives you your challenges is illegible. I have a 32 inch non-HD TV and I couldn't read it. It is like 4 point font. It may be designed to look good on a HD TV. it also is timed so you can't stop to try and read it.

4.The phone that gives you challenges rings incessantly and you can't fight while on the phone, so you learn to ignore it.

5. the time it takes running all over the mall to deal with the main story challenges will keep you from completing many of the secondary challenges.

6. There are cool things to kill with but most of the stores in this mall are clothing so they are hard to find.

7. there are more but I'll finish with the fact that your main base(where you take people and meet with the secondary characters)is a long dull hike in itself. it takes a minute or 2to reach the main mall concourse, and that will burn up like a half hour of the 70 hour game time.

The game needs to allow you more time to do the things in the game but you'll end up racing around trying to do the main story challenges, you'll stop taking photos, stop killing zombies because it takes to long, and wonder why your supposed 8 hour time window went so fast.

In a sense, the perfect game and the worst game

I really love Dead Rising. I am at level 50. I spend hours trying to unlock every achievement. At this point, I have beaten the game about 7 times. There are two reasons for this. The first is that Dead Rising is the next generation of sandbox game. The world is huge. There is so much to do and see. And, because of the achievements, you are motivated to attempt to save 50 people from the mall. The game is not good for everybody. If you just want to play casualy, I can't really recommend. However, if you put in alot of time, you level up, gain stuff, and are extremly satisfied. Also, remember that you might get very very frustrated. I am a very zen player, so replaying a tough segment isn't too bad, especially since my level 50 means that I don't have too often. However, If you are frustrated easily, I wouldn't pick it up. There is a demo on the marketplace. I would recommend checking it out. If you replay it over and over again, trying to kill more Zomnbies, you are probably hardcore enough to buy the game. In a sense, Dead Rising is the perfect game. It rewards what you do. If you put in loads of effort and time, eventually your hard work will be paid off in full. However, if you do not feel the urge to become truly immersed, you will likly hate the game for not tolorating your laziness. And also, you might be annoyed with the game's glitches. Put in the time to get to level 50 and the megaman blaster, and I think just about anybody would love this game.

Great with minor complaints. You'll love it and hate at the same time. The save system stinks, and one of the few xbox 360 games with no online play but the rest is sweet,(graphics sound, fun factor)you know the deal.

This game is a true to life game adaption of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. The numerous ways you can kill these zombies is amazing...everything and i mean EVERYTHING is a weapon! Highly recommend.

Awesome game, once you get the hang of it

Now, I am a big fan of zombie games and movies, so I of course love this game. There are a few drawbacks to this game that take a little getting used to. The saving style is a little hard to get used to and not very user friendly. If you don't know how it works you could end up repeating everything you did. I find that it has many, many hours of fun gameplay. It can be frustrating rescuing some of the people as the AI is not great. In all it is very fun and different since there are multiple endings that you get depending on how you play the game. If you are a fan of zombie games I recommend picking this up.

We're not using the zed-word.

When I got my 360 this was one of the titles that I was most excited about, but upon playing the game for more than a few hours, it lost its appeal. Sure, it is mindless zombie fun, but there is so much of the same. All I can think of when I play this game now is the improvements that should be made if a sequel were to be released. I cannot help but focus on all of this games flaws. After seeing each unique death that is brought about by all of the different weapons in this game, it gets boring. The music, while appropriate muzak for a mall, is very annoying after 7 hours of playing through the game. Saving people is really annoying too. Some of them are not too big of a problem, but many of them are completely stupid and make it obscenely difficult to rescue them. I really want to like this game more, but in my book it is just okay. You could probably rent it and get as much fun out of it.

This game is fun to play from the moment you put it in the disk drive. You basically get to fight zombies with any object you want. It is very addicting and very graphic. If you don't like crude violence then this game isn't for you. Things I didn't like was the plot progression. It takes awhile to progress through the missions and is easy to mess up and have to start all over... so remember to save.
