unfair

the game is good..excellent strategy game...so why one star?.

the game is made UNFAIRLY. The russians are way much stronger and powerful than the allies. Eventough by playing on the allies side is very challenging, the fact that the game is made unfairly and so i gave it one star.

the best is still the original C&C by westwood.

A real disappiontment....

This edition of Command and Conquer was a real disgrace. I have played Red Alert 2, Tiberian Sun, C&C Gold, and then this. This was a piece of poorly-animated...well...CRAP. I can't beleive I wasted 14.95 on it. If I were you I wouldn't even't look directly at it.

Fun for the campaign game, but trash afterwards

After the excellent Command & Conquer, I'd hoped Westwood would come out with something just as good as the original. As usual, I was wrong. While the story and FMVs are as good as ever, and there are plenty of units to choose from (including welcome sea and air units). There's just one problem to the game: IT'S A TANK RUSH. Prepare to test your "strategy" by seeing who can get more resources to fund medium tank production, because nothing else is worth building for the first 20 minutes. Unless you and your buddy are at the same skill level or you're playing a premade mission where the computer starts out with enough defenses to trash basic tanks, all you'll see is hordes and hordes of them. If you're not going to play this online and just want to try out cool missions, go ahead and buy Red Alert. Otherwise, get something worthwhile like Total Annihilation.

Dated

Unfortunately I got this as a gift AFTER already playing the new Tiberian Sun version of C&C. While this game might have been state of the art 3 years ago, now it appears dated. So if you're deciding on this versus Tiberian Sun, go with Tiberian Sun.

Red Alert is a fun buy but not as good as RA2

Red Alert has awesome items like the telsa coils and the mig airplanes and some other EXTREMELY NEAT STUFF! But the game is very fun but not as good as RA2. RA2 Has alot more neat stuff than this does. Now to make Red Alert really fun though, buy Aftermath and Counterstrike. Also the single player missions are fun at first, and are very challanging, I just have to say that red alert to is for people who like the classics and fair graphics games.

This game is moderately strategic

I played this game for a bit and found it was ok. It was very violent and futuristic, but i guess thats what teenagers want these days. I found the campaigns very easy, as I beat them in a week. The game isnt very strategic, but it has it's strategy points. This game should not be rated 5 stars. The graphics are mediocre, the music is annoying, and the gameplay is slightly boring after a while. As you go through the world as either the Russians or the English, you face many campaigns that you must beat. It was clever of them to put them together, but they are very easy. You can go along several paths, another plus, but the paths all end the same way if you win.

This game is also not very strategic. You are either allied or soviet, and each team has completely different units. That maybe strategic, but there are only 2 points of views to master. In Age of Empires or Age of Kings, there are many different civilizations each with bonuses and special units. Also, the terrain has no affect on how damage is dealt. It will just deal the same amount every time. No matter to what kind of unit. In AOK, each unit has a different amount of armor, some have attack bonuses against certain units, and units have the advantage in battle when they are uphill.

This game is also very violent and bloody with futuristic weapons. Not the kind of game i would like my kids playing. In AOK, the units use bows, arrows, and swords, with not much blood and historical features. It also has a whole history book of all the tribes that you can be and their history.

Oh. What the point of the game is. Blow the other team to bits with guns as big as you can.

I didnt like this game much, and from my review, you can see that I would reccommend Age of Empires or Age of Kings. See my review of Age of Empires Collecter's Edition. Before you even consider buying this game.

Good... but not great.

While the game was enjoyable, it is noticably outdated and sometimes the controls are not quite responsive (i.e. it takes a few seconds before your units will begin to move). But you would like it if you are a C&C fan, but for everybody else should go straight to Red Alert 2... MUCH BETTER!

Pretty Cool

This game has no strategy involved, its about who can make the most tanks, men, etc... I have won in 20 minutes by mass producing my tanks...

Don't buy this package....

Red alert is a great game and certainly worth buying but you can pick it up in a variety of packages and prices here on amazon and this one is NOT the most economical. I'll explain later.

Now to the game. Yes red alert is now an old game by PC standards. The graphics are still ok but not obviously up to snuff compared to tiberian sun or it's sequal red alert 2. Never the less red alert is a blast and might still be the most enjoyable, playable game in the whole command and conquer seris including those newer games. Anybody familiar with any one CnC game basically knows how to play them all because the concept is the same. You need two resources to function. The most important resource is had by making refineries and sending out harvesters to gather it. In this game it is called ore, in tiberian sun it is called tiberian but it all doesn't matter because the entire game is focused on getting as many harvesters at work as possible and protecting them so you have the credits neccesary to build your military. From an offensive perspective of course you want to try and cut off your opponents harvesters and that's at least half the game. The other resource is power which is easily had by building power plants from time to time.

The game features two very evenly matched sides in a mostly conventional military battle. The russians and the ukrainians on one side and the allies on the other with germany, france and england. The russians and the ukrainians have the bigger more powerful tanks, a heavy tank and the mammoth. The allies have tanks that are smaller quicker and cheaper. The russians can make deadly telsa coils for defense which electrocute the enemy while the ally countries can make cheaper better armoured conventional turrets and pill boxes. The russians can make a substantial air attack with fast flying mig bombers and yaks. The allies are limited to helecopters but can make a real navy with destroyers and crusiers while the other side can only make defensive submarines. The sides are balanced and which country you choose to play with will be determined by the map. If the map has lot's of water on it you may prefer to be one of the ally countries so you can build a navy.

Overall the action is constant and the battles can be intense. One of the things that sets this game and all the CnC games apart from other rts games is that these games are much more base camp limited. In this game you have a command center and you build around it. You can make a sevice depot and then make an mcv but you still have to place it down some place and build around it. Those who are more used to games like total annililation or age of empires may find this confining. In those games you have mobile units that allow you to build anything anywhere on the map irregardless of how close or far they may be from another structure or unit. Here you have to build within the camp and while you can make mcv's and build other camps they are not easy to protect and mcv's are expensive. Normally in the course of a game you may have your major camp and one smaller additional one whose purpose is to protect you harvesters as they have to go out further and further for ore.

Overall red alert is a very fun well balanced game that still has many followers today. Go on mplayer or westwood and you will find dozens even hundreds of players. There are dozens of good downloads available online including mega maps and desktop theme packs. I highly recommend the coop maps which allow you and a bud to ally and take on a super charged AI opponent. With coop you can really play as a single team where each player can control the others units and the maps are great.

Finally, don't buy this game package. You can buy just red alert for $ so why pay more for this? Also red alert is now available in a couple of nice game packages. You can buy red alert and gettysburg along with another rts game in one package and another package allows you to buy 10 games including this one.

Okay, but Tiberium Sun was better

When I got this game about 3 years ago, I loved it, but after the campien missions frutrated me more and more I just gave up, and played skirmish games. Then I got tiberium sun, and I'm playing it even more than before! Don't get me wrong, this is a very good game, it could just be improved upon.
