Next to FFVI this is the probably one of the best Final Fantasies of all time. The story was very interesting. Though I haven't played it on SNES, I've played it in the Final Fantasy Chronicles package. However, I do know things about the SNES version that could help you decide if you want the FFC one or the SNES one.

On the SNES this FF game called FFII was released in America as FFIV EASY TYPE. It had spells and enemies, but from what I hear wasn't very difficult. Then came FFC and we got the harder version.

Anyway, the story line is very good, and the crystal is put to better use than in FFV. (While I'm starting to get sick of the Crystals, I rather liked it in this one.) There are a ton of story turners in this one.

Also, unlike the one on PSone, this game is censored. For example, some of the story elements aren't mentioned in this one.

Overall this was pretty good, but I played the HARD TYPE and uncensored version of the game. Its probably better to buy for the PS because its cheaper, uncensored, and easier to find.

Classic, best plot of any in the series and most influential

As has been noted by other reviews, this was the most influential of the Final Fantasy games to the rest of the series. This was the first game to develop a plot through textual descriptions and dialogue. This was the first to have a plot that contained honest-to-goodness character development. In fact, the conflict faced by Cecil in dealing with his past wrongs and the sins of his family is probably the most rounded character that the Final Fantasy series has produced. In addition, this was the first game to include the pseudo real-time battles, the summoned spirits, and the emphasis on over the top spells. While Final Fantasy III/6 would later develop some of these features even further, this game contains their first and in some ways best incarnation. I have played many RPG's over the years, and this is easily one of my two or three favorites, and the best of this generation of consoles. If you haven't played it yet, you it to yourself to discover where the Final Fantasy series came from.

The Best

First of all, I've tried all of the Final Fantasy games and this is my favourite one of 'em all. I've never tried the nintendo version, but I do own the Origin version of the playstation, and I treasure it with all of my heart.

The Story:
The evil emperor is using his power to take over the realm, and to submit his evil influence in the world.
But not everybody will be bending to his will, and a group of freedom fighters escapes his malice and hords of dark riders.
Firion is the leader of the group, I have to say that his the least ineresting person in the game, Maria her brother Leon disspears after they've been captured, but only to rejoin 'em later in the game "MUCH" later. Guy, a strong man with a vital and private thought of ways. There's many other character's in the game, but you'll have to find out for yourself.

The Gameplay:
Fairly hard, the battle system is alot different and so is the way you gain levels, strenght, HP and MP.
Some of the bosses are also extremely hard to beat, I've spend many of hours trying to beat R.Soul for example.
There's many of random battles, but be sure not to go where you'r not supposed to, if you do so the monsters will outclass you by far. Chocobos are being introduced for the first time in the Final Fantasy series, and the chocobo melody has been used in many future Final Fantasy games.

The Music:
The best I've ever heard in any game, the world map theme is spendid, absolutely fantastic the most memorable melody of the entire Final Fantasy serie. Many of these tunes will also be used in many Final Fantasy games in the future, refering to the Chocobo theme, used in FF7. Many wonderful theme's, splendid.

The Graphics:
Fine, But the updated version for the playstation is alot better, it's been improved alot, many more colours are squared into the scene, and the battles are alot more lifelike, such as the mountains in the background with green grass fields on the side, There's also been made some fantastic FMV movies for the updated version, actually they've come to be some of the prettiest FMV that's out on todays playstation console.

All in All:
"THE BEST FINAL FANTASY GAME IN THE ENTIRE SERIE, THE COOLEST STORY, THE COOLEST CAST OF CHARACTERS, THE COOLEST MUSIC, AND THE COOLEST BATTLE SYTEM. I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT"

If the original Final Fantasy (NES) first got me interested in RPGs, it was Final Fantasy II that got me hooked. FFII was really the 4th game in the series, but was only the second to make it to the United States. As opposed to the first game, this one had a story and well defined characters and the whole thing just sucked me in.

This game had one of the most interesting stories I had seen in a game up until that time. You control Cecil, a Dark Knight serving under the King of Baron. After taking Crystals from the magician village of Mysidia, Cecil questions why he is doing this, taking the Crystals from innocents. He is sent to deliver a package to the Village of Mist. Opening the package, the village is destroyed. Cecil now works in opposition to Baron to try to save the Crystals and not allow Baron to get them all. During this quest, the stakes get larger as Cecil learns of what is really going on. Some of my favorite characters in the series are in this game: Golbez, Kain, Rydia, Rosa, FuSoYa, Edge, Yang, the Twins. The cast of playable characters is large as characters come in and out of your party. Some Final Fantasy staples are included in this game (Summoned Monsters, a guy named Cid, Airships, Chocobos).

The game is simply fun to play, and remains one of my favorites of the series,

I have to say that this is not my favorite game. Although it used to be, FF6, then FFT, have overrun it. (first place FFT; it's THE BEST! second place FF6: I LOVE how you can use everyone in the last battle, and I like having all the characters and different abilities. third, FF4: No game will ever knock this game off third place.) It was my first RPG game. I was immidiately attracted to the RPG hp/mp system, and I loved the story. I liked how it was kind of old-fashioned, in a sense. Like in the new games such as FF 7 and 8 you don't see any more of this "fantasy" world, it's more of a technology kind of world. No more castles, airships, caves, instead it's cars, ships and machines. I really liked some of the music (tower of Bab-il, random battle, boss battle, battle with one of the four elements) And the speed was great (I appreciate the speed when I see the agonizingly slow games for PS now) and the gameplay was perfect. Not too hard, not too easy. I liked how you needed specific strategies in specific battles, like when you fight Ashura you need to cast wall on her, or when you fight the Delta sisters you need to kill the middle sister first. The graphics are old, but I personally perfer this to blocky Cloud and awkward Squall. There was something I really loved about this game, I'm not exactly sure what, but it's great. You have to play it. Definitely Square did well,

Ok one thing that glared at me as i read these reviews.....this game was released in america before 2003. It was released as an SNES cartridge and was the firstor second (i started FFIII [VI] and FFII [IV] at the same time) back when i was like 8. This game is quite possibly the greatest game to hit SNES, and thats saying a lot seems how SNES had the best games ever, if u dont mind the graphics. This game is pure heaven with an extremely well thought out plot, characters you really get to feel for, except for cid, i never liked him in this, and a high difficulty. At some points i just didnt know what to do and id put the game down for monthes, pick it up later and be like oooooo. I love how the normal creatures from the FF series tie in or originate here (mist monster = leviathan). The game is very difficult overall and compelling from the opening. I recomend it to anyone who owns an SNES (or to get it for PS).
It makes my top three list of FF's

1. FF tactics
2. FF III [VI]
3. FF II [IV]

Final Fantasy IV?

Lets get something strate first: This game is REALLY Final Fantasy IV!!! The ONLY reason it's called Final Fantasy II is because Final Fantasy II & III for Nintendo never came to the US! So Nintendo decided to just skip those numbers so no one would feel like their missing out on something! With that said Final Fantasy II way a good addition to the SNES library! Although there was some cencoring done to the language, and even though some questionable sceans were cut, it was one of Super Nintendo's best games! But if you have a Playstation too, just get Final Fantasy Chronicles and get the uncencored vertion!

Seems like there's a score of different Final Fantasy games out there these days, but despite the grandeur of FF 7, the melodrama of FF8, or the outright eyecandy of FF10, there's really no beauty like that of a simple classic. If you find yourself surrounded by people who've been playing games for a while, and the subject of Final Fantasy comes up, you'll find that most probably veer towards the new ones, especially FF 7 and 10. But if, like me, you're asked which is your favorite and you reply "Oh, I'll always love Final Fantasy II most of all", you will get respectful nods from all directions. And why not?

Final Fantasy II was a SNES game that came out in the beginning of the 90's, catering to the same crowd that was sucked into it's predecessor on the original NES. By this time RPG's were becoming more prevalent on Nintendos (owed almost entirely to the original Final Fantasy), old and new, and so Squaresoft threw this wonderful game on the US market. Unlike the first Final Fantasy this one had an actual plot, with characters that became an integral part of the story. New characters were introduced as the game played out, usually enticing you with answers to your characters' questions, but also leaving you with more questions. By the time you reached the last boss of the game you were really surprised at how much time you had put into the whole thing, and pleased with the payout.

They never made an RPG game that gave the player the "epic" feel quite like the Final Fantasy games did. I bought Final Fantasy III for my nephew about 2 years ago for PS One, and it was like a real stroll down memory lane. I can't wait to add this one to the collection! :)

This is the one that got me hooked...

This is the RPG that caused me to go out and get a Super NES console back in 1991 so I could play it. My brother had this game and gave it to me when he was done. I've been hooked ever since! Looking back, of course the graphics are definitely rather primitive compared to nowadays, but the music and storyline are compelling. I actually cared about these characters, Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Kain and others. I've played this game from start to finish at least a half-dozen times since I first beat it, seeing how powerful I could get my characters, using the Game Genie to "cheat" and see how it would play differently. A great sentimental favorite.

This was a great, great game. I mostly hear about all the new FF games but this is a classic. The characters are great and there's a pretty good storyline. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone into the classic RPGs.
