a little disappointed

what can you expect from a FPS? The Concept haven't changed at all, from the first and second game, you jump and shoot stuff. The access code thing is nice but kind of rips off of the original Deus Ex.

My biggest gripe, is this takes place in the future...there is alot of dark areas in the game no matter how much you turn up gamma correction, you still need to use a flash light; well seeing how this takes place in the future and all, you think the marine your playing would have some kind of night vision goggles to compensate or have the flashlight attached to the machine gun or shotgun, or use the handgun in one hand and the flashlight in the other but no. Theres alot of areas you have to kill creatures shooting fireballs and clawing at you in PITCH BLACK darkness(i can't express how fast and strong these things are)

Overall its a good game you'll play ONCE and when you end it, you will barely touch it at all, but you will be addicted to the game the first time you play it though.

Boring, outdated - big yawn!

I've read the reviews which support this game for it's atmospheric dark looks, the use of the flashlight, the weapons, blah, blah - but this game is just absolutely boring.
The graphics aren't all that (yes running it on good machine but it seems a case of the emperors new clothes), the monsters suck...they just come walking or leaping towards you, the weapons aren't even fun to use.
The only thing I can applaud is Activisions sales - by not releasing a demo version they managed to make a lot more money out of people like myself, who would have taken one look and seen what a mediocre game this was for the $50+ price tag.
Loved the first Doom's, loved Half-life, Battlefields, etc - and will go on playing them, Doom 3 I've sold already at a $35 loss.
Big yawn.

Don't be fooled by the hype!

How best to describe Doom3? Hmm...

Take Half-life, keep the same core storyline (I kid you not), improve the graphics and sound one thousand times and you have Doom 3. So it should be good, right? Wrong. Whereas Half-life was new and innovative 7 years ago, Doom3 is now an old and tired concept. This game offers NO innovation over other current FPS's whatsoever except for the amazing bump-mapped graphics.

Doom3 is a scripted FPS on rails with no innovation whatsoever. There, I've said it! (Far cry got the jump on Doom3 as far as producing the first engine to permit attractive bump mapping and pixel-shading goes)

How?

Essentially, the game consists of:

* walk to point X, trigger monsters Y and Z (those scripts!) run away/ shoot monsters, repeat. You can't plan how you're going to overcome the enemies. Areas you thought were "clear" suddenly spawn monsters behind you (e.g. zombified security guards) - how did they get there? Some enemies teleport, but the zombies? Why do the zombie security guards use radios?

On the subject of the enemy - the AI is absolutely terrible. One presumes most of ID's time was spent on the graphics engine and they "re-used" the Quake 2 AI? No matter what you do or where they hide, the enemies will find you. And they don't try to hide away from your bullets. And they don't work as teams. And they don't try to flush you out. They just. walk. or. jump. to. your. current. position.

* Collect keycards and PDAs to upgrade your security clearance level. Once you collect a card, expect a load of monsters to spawn. True, once you collect a PDA, you have access to the relevant employee's emails to read, and sound clips to listen to, but personally I think they are a nuisance.

* Look in darkened corners to find medikits and "armor shards"????!!!! Strange how armour is always hidden away in corners isn't it? Who puts this armour there?

So far, so DOOM 2/ Halo/ Splinter Cell/ Far Cry.

However, unlike Far Cry where you had free rein to go wherever you liked via boat or jeep, Doom 3's world is tight and claustrophobic. I expect that's the point. It's still not as foreboding as Alien Vs Predator 1's environment though.

Yes, I know it's Mars and the atmosphere is hostile, but it would be nice to have some freedom of exploration, at least within the complex. Doom1 and Doom2 provided wide areas to strafe - I suspect there are no wide areas in Doom3 as the game engine cannot support a large number of enemies (well, not with current hardware.)

You may think I hate the game. I don't. I just think ID have missed a fantastic opportunity to innovate and totally blow us away with new ideas. Doom 3 is fun if you can put your brain in neutral and forget that you've seen it all before.

The game can be a frightening experience - when the lights go down and zombies attack, your pulse will definitely race. And the Gatling gun... what a beast!!!

PS:
To those who say Half-life is a copy of Doom, I think you need your head examined, you obviously don't know Half-life at all. Half-life introduces talking to NPCs, climbing through ducts, ADVANCED AI and puzzles.

If Half-life is a rip-off of Doom, then Doom is a rip-off of Wolfenstein, and Wolfenstein is a rip off of 3D monster maze on the ZX81.

Don't listen to the kids raving that this is the best, the creepiest game ever. This is probably their first PC game and they haven't completed it yet (I have, nearly). Buy Half-life first, then Aliens Vs Predator 1, and then play Doom 3. You will see it's all been done before.. and better.

I don't know why the whole people hail this game!

I've played it for 3 Ours an saw it 2 days by a friend while he was playing.I thing this game is boring. So i will tell you what i think aboutit.

THE GRAPHIC:

in my opinion the Graphic is not really good. The Textures reminds me on games like XII with this Cell-shading technologie.Sorry but i think it locks a little bit like a comic.Bumbmapping's anniwhere!
and that locks like crap.If you want to see a game which has really realistic graphics buy Farcry. In Doom 3 i never saw High resolution Textures.Only Bump Mapping. The only thing in the game were the Faces which locks really great!
but the rest locks like an unreal World.Thats not real!

GAMEPLAY:

The Gamplay is really boring. In the Beginning its scary and makes fun but after an Hour you know the rest....
You walk around the complex collecting key cards and wait for the moment when a monster comes out of the next door. Its a straight line.Nothing changes, the whole game!

SOUND:

ok,the sound is the half of the fun you have in the game. It's very amazing and somtimes you'll be hooked :-)

I thing Doom III is like a Ghosthouse in the Funpark. If you come out and get in again you'll won't have fun annimore because you know it.

All the People who hail to the game loves those straight line games like this or doesn't even played it.
But in this times i expect a bit more inovation from a game which
takes over 4 years to be finished.
All the people who won't to buy it only of course the graphic and gorefactor should check out ebay or buy it used. Those people who pay the fullprice will be disapointed.

Way better than Farcry

There, someone had to say it. Yes, I know Farcry had pretty plants. Doom 3 Doesn't have pretty plants. I don't freakin care about pretty plants. But they were really, REALLY pretty plants and I should care! And yet here's me --> :[ refusing to care.

Doom 3 scared the hell out of me about once a minute. It had little deformed babies that jumped at my throat so I had to shoot those little babies. I HAD TO.

This Game has been called "the most anticipated pc game of all time" and many other things along this line. I fell for it and want to make sure others do not. What makes the game not worth it is the gameplay. I am a true believer in games hitting the target of what the word game is meant for. Fun. It is suppose to make you have fun. Doom 3 just is not that much fun to play. It has small amounts of it, but not enough. I don't think it is ok to pass any FPS off as a "mindless killing" simulation. They should be full of much more. Far Cry is a great example of a fun FPS I would say. You have vehicles, tons of guns, swimming, jumping, flying, and great graphics. Doom 3 has a few guns, jumping, running, and.... eh... shooting monsters. That is really it. It's just find this PDA and get through this door, use your fists, flashlight, pistol, shotgun, machine gun, or grenade to pound/shoot/blow up this monstor. The lack of lighting in the dark tunnels and rooms of the game adds to the fright factor, but is much more damaging to the overall experience. It equals the frustration of wandering around a dark room trying to find a light switch. Aside from the above, the sound, graphics, and controls are great. But, lacking the fun gameplay of other games, these technical aspects can not hold up enough to justifying the $55 for the experience of playing Doom 3.

I want my money back

I've been playing the game, it works fine on my computer (3 ghz Pentium, 256mb Radeon 9800xt, Soundblaster Audigy 2zs, 1 mb DRAM, etc.), even on high settings.

The graphics are great, but you stop oohing and aahing after a few levels of the game. After that, you're left with gameplay.

To me, Doom 3 is the gaming equivalent of a Haunted House at the local carnival. Rooms are dark and shadowy, corridors are narrow and claustrophobic, hellish whispers and moans surround you, and monsters pop out of trapdoors, the floor, the ceiling and even out of thin air. You jump a few times in your chair, sure, but the scares are all cheap, just like at the Haunted House. Was I geniunely scared? Yes, a few times. Do I want to pay 50 bucks to be scared a few times? Hell no. I'd rather rent Nightmare on Elm Street for 2 bucks at Blockbuster.

Once you get past the cheap scare factor, there is nothing else to this game. Id clearly decided to focus the game on one mission: scare the heck out of you, and in my opinion, they didn't really succeed. Because by the 1000th zombie popping out of a secret alcove, I wasn't jumping in my seat. I was just moaning at the redundancy.

I think Id needs to get a brain transfusion and get more creative.

One more thing, after a few hours of the game, I was just praying for one, just one!, open field fight. The original Doom had some awesome open field fights, what the heck happened to Doom 3? One more claustrophobic Martian corridor, and I'm gonna scream, not out of fright, but out of frustration.

I'm glad I got the game, just cuz it's the latest Doom installment. But am I gonna play it again once I finish it. I really really doubt it.

UPDATE: I just finished the game. The boss fights are open field fights, so I stand corrected. The ending was underwhelming. After killing the final boss, you get a short cut scene (emphasis on short), then voila! credits roll (and Trent Reznor starts jamming on the guitar). In order to get to the end, I had to go through *endless* martian corridors, lifts, blood-spattered rooms. Redundant is definitely the right word to describe this game. So, in the end, did I enjoy it? I'm not gonna lie, I mildly enjoyed it. Not enough to justify the price. This is bargain bin cheapware at best. Great graphics, sure, but the gameplay is a total rehash of Doom 1 (which was shareware way back when).

Great fun even on older systems

I opened my wallet for this long-awaited title despite not being 100 percent sure how it run on my 20-month-old system. I have a 2Ghz P4, 768 Mb of RAM, and an ATI Radeon 9800 (not Pro or XT) with 128 Mb of RAM. I'm pleased to report that the game still looks fantastic, with textures and lighting better than anything I've yet seen.

Doom 3 automatically scans your hardware and optimizes itself to run on what you have. On my setup, the graphics settings were dialed to "medium", but with resolution of just 640x400. I cranked the resolution up to 800x640 and the game still plays reasonably well, though there is a bit of stutter when the action gets really furious.

As for the gameplay, I've played the first couple levels, but so far have been pretty satisfied. As noted elsewhere, this is a straightforward shooter. There is no enemy AI to speak of. The only tactic you will face is a head-on charge. This might be tiresome if there were waves of enemies or if you were in an expansive outdoor setting. But it works because you will face small numbers of enemies at once, and you battle them in fairly confined quarters. Battles are fast, furious and short. The game relies heavily on spookiness, which is readily achieved by the copious shadows created by the combination of the dynamic lighting technology and the cramped quarters of the Mars base.

The major drawback to running Doom 3 on an older machine is that it will make you want to run out and buy a new system just so you can see how much better the experience can get.

Tedious, all too tedious

I hate to say it, but once you get past the first two levels this game is boring.

There is not enough contrast to keep things interesting. Even "scary" stops being interesting after it goes on too long. After five levels I started playing the game using the GOD cheat--not because the game is too hard (although it can be very hard) but because it was tedious and I just wanted to get through the level to see whatever small tidbit of novelty it might offer. The non-stop parade of imps and zombies just became annoying.

Once I got past the first few levels and had better weapons, the imps and zombies became gnats buzzing around my head. They didn't pose much of a threat, but sure annoy and bogged down my enjoyment of the game. Every time I wanted to look at one of the computer screens or an interesting object, there was always some stupid imp popping fireballs at me. It's not even particularly satisfying to kill them. They make an annoying screeching sound like a belt sander against steel.

I was a huge fan of the original Doom and was looking forward to this game, but the great graphics and incredibly detailed story line can't really hide the fact that this is the same old game-and it's a bit stale now.

Yes there are new monsters that don't appear in the original Doom, but the weapons are the largely the same and the basic game play is the same. They have added a "mad scientist" that didn't appear in the original game. He's constantly giving an evil laugh, saying "NOW YOU WILL DIE!! Oh brother.

In the original Doom there were a wide variety of environments. You weren't indoors in the gloom throughout the entire game. That helped break things up and make the dark and scary levels stand out more. In this version, every level tries to be dark and scary.

If you never played the original Doom or Quake, you may like this game because it will all be new to you. However, if you are an old Doom fan, you will probably find the new graphics and complex story to be really cool for a little while, but ultimately the game itelf is not as fun as it used to be.

Lots of hype but it just didn't deliver.

Now it seems that all the die hard Doom 3 fans are going to say this rating sucks, but if you are considering purchasing the game i recommend you read this.

I think that the developers spent a truckload of money advertising this so they could get their money out of it before player reviews came out.

After reading all the online reviews before the game was released, i thought this was going to be one of the best games i have ever played. It wasnt anything near it.

If you are looking for a good multi-player game, this is not it. It would seem to me that the developers spent all of their time working on the single player game. As for single player, it is extremely dark, and you spend half your time switching between your flashlight and gun(because i guess you cant geta flashlight on a gun....and i guess you cant find a roll of tape). I really expected more of a "dive in and start blasting the endless enemies with cool guns" kinda game, but i couldn't be more wrong, the gun are extremely boring, and the enemies even more so. When you arent switching between guns and the flashlight, you are running around in circle looking for a key to get through the endless doors.

I have played this game for two days, and I want to sell it already. I have never regret buying a game as much as I did this one.

So, unless you like running in circles in small dark hallways, I strongly recommend you dont spend your hard earned money on this sad excuse of a game.
