A Huge Dissapointment

Up to this game, id games almost seemed to have a Midas touch; everything they touched turned to gold. Many people felt whatever they got their hands on was surely going to win game of the year, or at least receives high accolades. As a fan of their games I would have agreed, until I got this game and played through it.

First off I'm going to say that the whole flashlight thing didn't bother me as much as it did others. And various other niggles that other people screamed bloddy murder over, I was willing to look past. But there were other things that were quite frankly unforgivable.

To be honest, this game was a good deal of fun for the first few parts. The graphics were unbelievable, the atmosphere was great, and the story was actually not bad. I figured the game could only get better; I was wrong.

The biggest problem is that all of the game's pros eventually turn into massive cons. The graphics are great, but what good are they when all you see are narrow corridors? What good is the atmosphere when you are in constant darkness? (I actually had to pump up my monitor brightness because I could never see what was going on) The story was the same thing over and over: finding PDA's and opening a door. That's the kind of puzzle system that Wolfenstein 3D operated on over 10 years ago, but I had prayed would be phased out completely by now. It's really a shame because there's some areas of the game that are truly breathtaking. The scenes on the terrain of Mars took my breath away, but these were few and far between. Why didn't id games use more open surfaces? Many fans have clamoured the same thing.

I can sum this game up in two words: boring, predictable. You walk into a room. You kill everything in sight. You pick up a PDA. A monster spawns behind you, and you kill it. Another few spawn, and you kill them. You move into the next room. Lather, Rinse, Repeat. The problem is compounded by the narrow hallways. It's next to impossible to use the BFG or the rocket launcher because you're likely to do more damage to yourself than the enemy.

The multiplayer isn't even worth mentioning. Remember, id games are the ones who realized that multiplayer was the way of the future, and designed Quake 3 Arena (one of the best MP games of all time) with this in mind. They were mimicked by the Unreal Tournament and Battlefield series. And then they come out with this, which scarcely has any worthwhile multiplayer component. Why do this? I simply don't understand it. id games literally snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I'm sorry, but I simply cannot find any real reason to purchase this game. I wasted my money on it, but hoped that the mod community would make up for id's lazy multiplayer component, but that never happened. If I could go back I would have definitely returned the game. If you must have it, wait for it to hit the bargain bin; at least then you won't feel too bad about forking over a few bucks.

Awesome, to a point, then downhill. Too Bad really....

Lots of people have covered this here, so I'll only summarize. This is a great game, for the first few hours. Then, you want to hang it up. Me, I was fine until I got to hell. Then, I wanted to simply quit, as it was impossible to proceed, and so dark, I couldnt tell what was going on. I've played dozens of FPS type games, and this was the first one that I started to hate halfway through. While I always have a game of FarCry going, and I've played through Half Life 2 6 times, this one is a one shot deal for me. I may try the expansion pack, but basically, this whole Doom 3 thing is a pretty face with almost no substance.

I would be plenty happy just killing things, but only if they can actually die. Getting into levels where you have to use nearly all your ammo to proceed is boring, frustrating, and just plain dumb. And the constant darkness, well, its just dark.

The visuals are awesome, as are the sounds. The taunts, I could take them or leave them, but they are not too bad. The whole flashlight thing, everyone has criticized this game for that, and yes, its frustrating, but I can even get past that. The construction of the game is amazing, truly a tour de force. But the gameplay, well thats another story.

I find that I lose motivation, and just plain stop. The obsession to see what comes next, just isn't there with Doom 3. After the first 10 levels, I just got bored. And then Hell came, and I quit for a bit. It was like banging my head against a wall (maybe that would have worked). This level simply ruined the game for me, with undefeatable creatures, replays of save points 100 times, and just lousy gameplay. The essence of the level is interesting, but the gameplay is aweful.

I seriously doubt that I will ever replay this game. I may try the expansion pack just for kicks, but only when it is a 10 dollar item at the local game store. Basically, this game was a big disappointment to me. ID software probably is tied with Valve for technical brilliance, but Doom 3 is just plain drippy and frustrating. A solid 3, with HUGE potential.

A disappointment...

I'm a long time doom fan, and this revival of the series was a real disappointment. The graphics are stunning, the guns are sweet, and the monsters are horrifying, but it all lost the unique "doom" feel.

The designers changed the gameplay type from gung-ho marine wiping demon scum from the world to "please dont hurt me" try to survive. This game focuses too much on the fear element that loses the novelty of a Doom game. It's set up so that theres less dodging and skill involved in playing the game, and more emphasis on knowing whats around the corner.

Don't get me wrong, there are things about this game I do like. I like the graphics, I like the storyline, but I feel that they should have tried to stick to their roots more. I'd have appreciated it a lot more if they returned some of the original monsters, or made an option to unlock original Doom 1 levels. Perhaps this game just has an impossible name to live up to and people are judging too harsh.

Too Doom Classic

While I have only spent three hours playing this game, I am quite disappointed and wanted to get the word out as fast as possible. On the positive side Doom 3 reminds me of the PC game Aliens vs. Predator 2, which was scary as a single player game because of the darkness and theme. But AvP2 used the darkness to make the game fun despite the poor graphics. But while the graphics are good when the near constant darkness doesn't prevent one from enjoying them, the interface is too classic Doom. There is no realistic vision enhancement such as NVGs, or even lights mounted on weapons. Thus one must go from flashlight to weapons (of which there is the classic too many to really carry) and back again almost nonstop, which is lame in a high-science, future based game. Monster spawning is also lame as they spawn from cleared areas.
The worst aspect of this game is that the creators do not take advantage of even established innovations in FPS games, such as leaning or alternative fire/view.
Overall this game is essentially Quake I with better graphics, but with too much darkness; not worth the asking price by a long-shot. The monster AI also stinks compared to even Quake 2, although I was fighting mostly zombies.

Not all I had expected...

This game is possibly more hyped than Half-Life 2. It is higher than it on the hype-lists of both Gamestop and 1UP.com, which is saying alot. It was advertised as the best looking game ever to grace market shelves. It's not. Sure, it's close, but it sure isn't. While some may say that it's claustrophobia-inducing rooms are just to add to the feeling, I found it the opposite way. It took me out of the game, and the absolute darkness made me a little angry. How am I supposed to admire graphics in the pitch black?

After knowing my mistake of purchasing this game, I am going to tell all of you a little secret. Buy Far Cry and wait for Half-Life 2. It'll be worth it, trust me.

OVER HYPED - OVER PRICED

I've been playing Far Cry now for 3 weeks, needless to say I was sorely disappointed by Doom 3. Yes the graphics are great, yes the sound is great, yes it's scary. But those attributes alone don't make up for the poor plot, sub par level design and stupid A.I. My buddy's retarded sister could play this game and outwit the A.I. (no offence Mike). The multiplayer is mediocre when compared to a great FPS like Far Cry, so the replayability is non-existent. This flashlight deal is a joke, I guess Doom's future didn't include the invention of night vision. The levels are closterphobic and linear but I'm told that is how they're supposed to be...yeah right, wake up level design. The best thing Doom 3 had going for it was it's marketing scheme, hell, they got me to burn 55 bucks from all the hype, too bad the secret's out now!

Bottom-line - The FPS genre has evolved with games like Far Cry giving us expansive environments to explore, intelligent A.I., incredible level design, awesome single and MP game play along with beautiful graphics and surround sound. Doom 3 has the sound and graphics but lacks the other crucial elements to make this a truly great game. Buy Far Cry for 20 bucks if you haven't already and wait until D3 hits bargain prices before you waste your money (like I did).

The lamest over-hyped shooter of the decade

Why?

Why did id spend so much money, and waste so much artwork on the lamest remake the world has ever seen? The level design is so bad that it boils down to nothing more than a pretty arcade shooter. This is the kind of game they put in arcades to try and give you as little play-time as possible.

The plot: exactly the same as doom 2. Nothing new, original or creative.

Game play: Move 10', fight a horde of monsters. Move 10', fight some more. Move 10', some jump out behind you, then more teleport in all around you--for no reason. Level after level after level of pointless arcade style shoot-em up. There is no horror, no suspense, no story line. Just a constant jerk on the trigger finger to see how good your relfexes are. Castle wolfenstein 3D gave all that ten years ago, and was much more fun to play.

My advice: Do not waste your money on this. Far Cry is half the price, with comprable graphics, better game play, and a much better story line. Judgeing from the previews, Half life 2 will also offer much better game play, graphics and story line.

I want my money and time back.

Doom 3 review & system specs

Well, I got the game on August 3 and have put a few hours into it. Since there are so may reviews already, I will keep this fairly short.

The gameplay is fairly standard FPS gameplay. They have done a much better job of integrating a story line and mission objectives, via Cut Scenes, info on your Marines PDA, Etc. But you are still basically going from one point to another, and dispatching baddies along the way.

As for the looks, the game is the next step in eye-candy. The lighting, shadows, characters and demons are all very detailed and scary when they are supposed to be. The maps are a lot of corridors and smaller rooms, giving you a crampt and paranoid feeling. You will use your flashlight A LOT! I think this is a good thing, as the game is more of a single player design. Weapons all feel good, look good and are what you might expect. Menu Interface is great and simple to use. Due to the dark environment, you are a bit on edge most of the time. Even so, I have literally jumped in my seat a few times! The sounds is fantastic also. I read a review earlier about the sound clipping out or something, I have not had this happen AT ALL.

My systems specs are below this paragraph. I had an ATI Radeon 9700, but purchased a BFG Tech GeForce 6800 128mb card, just to make sure I could play this game. I love the new card!!! I noticed the difference even in Windows XP, and the FarCry demo is now a pleasure to play. I have good, but not great spec below and the game plays very very well. I can play on the "high" setting @ 1280x1024 with 2x AA, and it play very smooth with no issues. timedemo demo 1, shows an avg of 41 FPS. We can always want things faster, but as I am playing, I do not think "damn, I wish it was smoother", I don't even think about it. I should also note the if you use the "medium" settings, it looks pretty darn much the same. If you don't go looking for differences, you will not notice a difference.

Overall, I like the game very much, and think the Doom 3 engine should produce some other amazing games as developers license the engine and gets some games out.

So much for being a short note! here are my specs, which I think run the game better than fine.

Dell 8250 P4 2.4g 533mhz FSB
1gig 1066 Rambus Ram
BFG Tech GeForce 6800 OC 128mb
19" Dell Flat Panel LCD
Windows XP Home Edition
200GB Western Digital w/8mb Cache (Game Drive)
120GB Seagate w/2mb Cache (System Drive)

Evil didn't get an upgrade

This is not the DooM that I expected. This is a totally new fps that just borrowed the name of the original.

All that I was looking for was the same type of map based game, instant shooting, find the red, blue and yellow keys, shoot a butt-load of demons, watch out for the green acid, shoot a lot more demons, get to the exit without dying (maybe even find a secret exit). This game lacks all of the things that I was hoping for.

Instead they ruin it with a plot, cutscenes, lack of finding some weapons until the end, yadda, yadda, yadda.

However, if this game were called something else like,.....um, I don't know....."Extremely Dark Game With A Flashlight"...I probably would have liked it a lot more.

Like I said this isn't DooM.

Pure and simple horror

This game made me remember what I loved so much about the original Doom. The designers of this game left the controls as simple as possible. With the large number of control features that have crept into modern First Person Shooters since the early days of Doom, the developers must have thought hard about what not to include. Here are some modern FPS features that you will not find in this game: A sniper weapon, leaning to peek around corners, laying prone, low-light goggles, a "use" button of any kind.
They pared this game down to First-Person basics for the purposes of gameplay and it pays off. Even the decision to have a flashlight or a weapon was well-thought out. Anything that was not necessary in maintaining an oppressive mood and a persistent feeling of horror was removed. What remains is a technically superior, atmospheric game that evokes the feelings of terror from the greatest Science Fiction Horror films.
The decisions made at id Software are sure to polarize fans of the genre. I think many players are unsatisfied by anything that minimizes the amount of control they have over the game world. But there is a good reason to remove every one of those features from a game like Doom 3. Peeking around a corner allows you to sneak up on enemies. A monster that you can surprise is not frightening, so that feature goes. The enclosed, cavelike hallways of the Mars base make a sniper weapon mostly ineffective, which also removes the need for lying prone. The excellent computer interfaces and the lack of any non-weapon equipment eliminate the need for a "use" key.
The computer interface feature was implemented well with the map designers. When I first encountered the interactive computers, I was certain that my inability to use a weapon while using one was going to cost me, it never did.
The graphics are astounding. I was initially disappointed that my 2.8Ghz system with 128MB video card could only do 800x600 resolution. But even at that resolution the game is stunning. The game is attractive enough that I suspect I'll be loading it up when I upgrade my computer in a few years, just to see it on better hardware.
I haven't tried the multiplayer, and I may not. I'm not very interested in Deathmatch. No one should buy this game for the online experience. Hopefully modders can come up with something interesting.
I give the game five stars because I think it does everything the developers wanted: An excellent classic shooter in the Science Fiction Horror genre.
