Amazing graphics, quite frightening... not for younger ones!

Just got the game, and it is amazing. The graphics and sound are just terrific. The video screens that in Doom 1 were brightly colored bitmaps are now interactive videos, letting you enter codes, view useful information, and video conference. 5.1 sound is a must, as is a high-end video card.

Oh, and don't play it right before you go to sleep. The game is SCARY and will make it difficult to rest well! It is NOT for young children. There is a lot of violence and gore and claustrophobic situations. Let the kids play Mario Kart. This game is for the older set.

The future is a very dark place with no duct tape.

If you are a fan of first person shooters with any sort of depth look elsewhere. If you are looking for a Farcry/ UT2004 killer look elsewhere. If you are looking for a game that's looks great graphically, has little replay value, and has extremely limited multiplayer then by all means waste your money on this game.

Graphically sets a new standard

Until the next amazing graphical leap forward (Half Life 2?), people will be comparing future releases of 3D game software to Doom 3. In fact, there is no current system that can take full advantage of what Doom 3 can pump out! To see the best of what Doom 3 has to offer in the eye candy department, you will have to wait for new graphics cards to come out.

But lets talk about what you get with current technology. I am running a P4 2Ghz, 1 GBRam with an ATI Radeon X800 Pro video card. Keep in mind this is not even the highest end card out there right now. The XT version of this card puts out 16 pipes versus my cards 12.

Now, I have the graphics level set to Ultra High with Anti Aliasing turned off.

At this graphic level, the performance on my system is smooth as silk. And yet, the graphics are absolutely amazing. All the latest things have been included in this game. Bump mapping, realistic and fluid character movement and textures that will make you think you could actually reach out and touch it.

So visually, this game is an unbelievable treat. But then there is the sound. First, keep in mind that the fine folks at ID wrote their own audio code for this game. So, not matter what audio card you have (even if its built into your logic board), you will get the same audio quaility level. I happen to have an Audigy 2 card from the folks at Creative. I don't currently have surround sound speakers connected to my system.

So with just regular old stereo speakers and a subwoofer on my system, I am getting sound that is unbelieveably immersive. I can only imagine what the experience is like with full surround. It literally makes me shiver to think about it since with my setup and have already been scared out of my wits repeatedly by the atmosphere created by the audio.

The pacing of this game has clearly been well planned. The surprises are many and creepy moments are punctuated by eerie lighting and creepy, distant sounds.

There is no question that this game is worthy of your time. Just be aware that its bloody, and scarier than just about anything else I have ever played.

What is the one thing missing from this game? Real world physics. Now don't get me wrong, it has what most of us have come to know as "physics" in games so far. It is probably the one area in this game in which ID has not really innovated.

For that level of innovation, we will have to wait for Half Life 2.

So what is the "right" way to play this game? Well, turn down the lights, park yourself in front of the screen and dive in. It's an experience you will be amazed by.

Is there a down side? Well, at this point I can say that game play has become a bit repetative. I have not seen a new baddie for a while. I believe I am a little more than halfway through. I have just finished the communication tower level. But even with that complaint, the eye candy here is well worth taking this game for spin.

Very Dissapointed

I was VERY disappointed in Doom 3. Doom got me into gaming, it was new, innovative and fun. But now, 10 years later - the same game with a new face - is in short BORING!! Graphics and sound are cool - very impressive - that is about it. The requirements are way over the top - unbelievable. The guns take way too long to reload - way too many monsters and not enough story and things to do to make the game interesting. The game may have gotten better visually - but it has not grown up like the rest of us did. It's still stuck in 1995. Save your money - wait for the price to drop to $19.95 on the clearance shelf and you have a video card that can take advantage of the visuals.

This really is the ULTIMATE DOOM!

Ok, I've been reading the reviews here and I had to put in my 2-cents-worth, because most people are so down on this game when it's actually a truly amazing gaming experience. My advice to people is to buy the old Doom compilation that came out recently (...), and see if you like it. If you do then you will LOVE this game. If you don't, well then you probably won't like Doom3 either. The basic gameplay is the same. But that's fine because this IS DOOM! If anyone has a right to so-called run-and-gun gameplay, it's this game! Doom was the game that really started it all back in the early 90's. If you had a pc running Doom95 then you were lucky, because most people were still playing 2D games, not 3D. That's how innovative it was at the time.

Now, that said, Doom was 10 years ago. And now we have (at long last) Doom3. So what's so good about it? Well, it's not just run-and-gun. It's run-and-gun with your heart beating out of your chest, monsters jolting you out of your seat, and all this set amongst the scariest atmosphere and tension you will find in a game currently. My little nephew INSISTS on playing all my pc games when he comes over (you know how kids are these days). All that is, but this one. He plays GTA Vice City, and loves it. He plays the old Doom, and loves it. He plays Unreal2, and loves it... He asked me to turn off Doom3 because it made him want to sleep in his parents' bed, it scared him so much. THAT should give you an idea of how frightening this game is. There were times when it made me jump so much that I was laughing afterwards. Not a happy laugh. A scared, nervous laugh. hehe

Lots of people keep complaining about the flashlight not being strapped to the weapons. Well please don't let that little thing stop you from enjoying what is in my humble opinion, the game of the year (assuming HL2 doesn't top it, which it very well might). Look people, use your brain and get a mod for the flashlight if it's that important to you! Then cease complaining and ENJOY. We aren't allowed to put URLs in reviews so I can't give you a link to the mod you need to complete your Doom 3 experience, but you should be able to find it yourself (...). The mod you want is called "Stupid Gunlights". But if you ask me, you're doing yourself a disservice by using the mod, because stepping cautiously into the darkened rooms of Doom3 is half the fun. All I did was map the Flashlight to the Right Mouse Button, and I could switch between flashlight and weapon with speed and ease. Then, also map the following: Middle Button = Reload. Left Button = Fire. Simple! Easily fixed I think you'll agree. So please don't let it put you off if you're considering buying Doom3 and you've read all the whiney reviews on here.

The graphics are ofcourse amazing. The fact that the game is only compatible with Windows 2000 and XP should tell you something. You NEED a modern machine to run this on. I'm using a P4 2.4Ghz 533 MHz FSB, 1GB RAM, and an ATI Radeon 9600 128MB graphics card. After buying this game I am seriously considering buying a Radeon 9800 Pro or faster! Currently I am having to run it at 800x600, but I do have all the effects on, except for anti-aliasing. So that's not too bad, because they are SUPERB visual effects. I get a good frame rate too - around 30 fps according to the game's own fps meter (switched-on via the game's config file), which is around the same as a tv picture - so it's enough to look nice and fluid.

But if I change it up to 1024x768 (the native resolution for my 15" LCD monitor) then it starts to slow down. Which sucks. But I KNEW that going in. You just have to face it - this is a visually-stunning game that requires you to have some modern hardware. If you are running a P3 or the AMD equivilent, then it's high time you bit the bullet and upgraded your hardware anyway! I don't wanna hear anyone else moaning how their machine can't handle it! That's just how it is with computers - they get out of date FAST. It's your fault your computer is slow, not ID software's! So stop complaining that they made the graphics too cool for your tired old machine. It's about time someone broke the mould and brought a new graphics engine into the world. I don't know about you, but I'm getting pretty bored of games using the QuakeIII engine! Nice one ID!

So overall, if you go into this game wanting a state-of-the-art Doom experience, then that is exactly what you will get. Buy this game. You won't be disappointed. This really is the Ultimate Doom! Well done ID! It's destined to be a classic. I've completed the game and I can personally tell you that it's worth every penny. So strap on your BFG-9000 and go frag some demon(...)!

what a letdown .....PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY

Doom is one of the first games I was addicted to. I have been waiting for a long time for Doom3. In my opinion they blew it. The original Doom's had in there favor that they were playable right out of the box. This Doom has you running for online multi player right away. The old doom had sounds that scared me. This doom just throws noise at you. I don't like the doors automaticly opening. The game looks too much like half life and is WAY TOO DARK. Geeeezzz my eyes were screaming and I had my monitor turned up all the way. Hlaf of the time I had no idea what was killing me. They should have stuck to the working formula and added the modern Graphics and AI that are now available. Walking for hours with that stupid flashlight just got old. In the days of the old Doom the cheat codes were a little harder to come by. Doom3 is so irritating that you go running to the net to find some way to make this $45 game worth owning. I'd pass. Games take too long to load after you're killed. Mines going on EBAY. The marketing was great but this pig is going to die quick once the word is out. Halo was fun to play right out of the box and YOU CAN SEE.
AMD athlonXP 2800+ overclocked , 1 gig ram , ATI 9200 128
It plays fine on the machine I just don't want to. Give me the old Doom any day.

We waited how long for this?!?!?!

Negatives

Ok, I'm half way through this game and I have to say that I'm not impressed. The plot is WEAK. The game play is linear. And instead of making it challenging in other ways, the designers had a brain storm...Lets make 90% of the game in the dark!!!!!! So you have to switch from flash light to gun and back again. I have died more times in the dark shooting at where I thought the enemy was located then any other way. The story line is so simple a 6 year old could, and might have, come up with it. I just wish the programmers would have spent more time on the story and less on deciding what places need to be without lights.

Lastly, their joking about the retail price being $79.99. This game is barely playable and I got it as a gift. I would feel seriously shafted if I paid $20 for this much less $80. All in all, play Doom 2 and save yourself a bunch of money. If you want fun, play the ID classic, Wolfenstien 3D.

Positives

Graphics are good, not worth the requirements but they are good. The sound is good as well. I also like the fact that you can go onto the Martian terrain. The one thing I do not like is the short amount of air that you can have. Many people can hold their breath longer then the amount of air you have in an oxygen tank.

All in all one and ½ stars

Despite what other people say, the alpha demo has quite a ways to go, before I can call it good. I have played the game (on the recommended hardware), and I can say that although the physics, lighting, and mesh reduced bump maps are nice little visual elements, graphically the characters still have a way to go. Its like for some reason organic beings all revolve around a grey mushy color in this game. I expected more demonic looking characters. I don't want this to be a resident evil look alike (zombies are nice, but hell is taking over mars, lets get some demons in here). And all the zombies look like prison inmates, what gives?

Also, the sound effects (done by Trent Reznor of course) are very smooth and fit in perfectly with the game, but at least as far as the demo goes there are some syncing issues. And the character animations, although very fluid, were overexaggerated greatly, and quite a bit could be taught to iD about cinematic camera angles. Also, the complete lack of outdoor portals makes the world feel very small and enclosed. It does not lead as much to your sense of exploration as you know the next room will just be another room with zombies in it, that looked a lot like the room before it.

Finally, the most annoying aspect of the demo so far is they don't compile their md5meshes, materials, or animations, so the game takes up quite a bit of space and load times are very subpar (also, the game does not appear to precache monster meshes or anything, so it loads on demand the animations, sounds, etc. which can cause random annoying lags in the game depending on your storage medium).

Overall, this is the best first person shooter I've seen (with emphasis on the seen), and I love the doom games (they really struck a chord with me). But as it is prealpha, I cannot construct a positive or negative attitude about the game itself (just about the engine). The engine I give a 4. Its a nice prealpha test, but the engine does have a few steps to hurdle before it can be set atop Mt. Olympus. And the game itself needs a little more artistic help.

For those worried about hardware.

Okay, I'll start this off by being as honest as I can... I nabbed a copy of this from one of "the usual places" earlier this evening and have been playing it ever since. Before I even get into anything specific let me add this... as soon as it hits the shelves, I'll be shelling cash for a boxed copy.

id has done an incredible job here folks... and I'm not playing on a "bleeding edge" box here either (AMD XP 2500+, 768 Mb ram, PNY Verto GeForce 5600 Ultra, onboard sound from a Shuttle MN31N). I've played up to the third level of the game (just getting back to the main base from the comunications systems annex in the tunnels) and it's purring smoothly at 800x600 medium details. As a few previewers have noted, 640x480 at low detail looks great, 800x600 medium is beautiful. Going any higher brings me down to a choppy mess... but I don't feel as though I'm missing much.

The atmosphere is creepy, the sound is fantastic and the game play is tight. If you meet the minimum specs for this game... you'll probably have a good time with it.

I'm personally chomping at the bit for the linux binaries to hit. Loading this up on my streamlined Gentoo install ought to help squeeze even more out of this fantastic release.

Last thing I want to add is... yeah, I was naughty and nabbed a leaked copy (and it 'aint beta). But I will definately be dropping cash Wednesday for a legit copy to support id (especially for their continued support for the linux community) and so that I mop the floor up with the rest of you late comers. ;)
