More Doom 3 goodness *minor spoilers*

I just finished the Single Player game. Those who liked Doom 3 will like this one too, those who didn't, won't. It's really more of the same, which was what I was looking for. I'd say it's about two-thirds as long as D3, which ain't too bad for an addon. You'll find the familiar array of weapons but with the addition of the double-barrel shotgun, the grabber gun, and the "artifact". There's no soul cube. For those wondering about the "artifact", it gathers souls of dead human scientist to charge and when activated it puts you into "hell time" slowing the baddies down (like in every other FPS made in the past five years). It powers up when you kill bosses, adding extra damage and invincibility to the hell time ability.

The gravity gun--oops, I mean "grabber" gun doesn't make a huge difference in the game like it did in Half-Life 2. At least I didn't have much use for it--your mileage may vary. A huge drawback is that it can hold items for just a few seconds. That's hardly enough time for the smoke of the fireball (or whatever) you just caught to clear away so you can aim it back. I found this very frustrating--nothing like the saw blade chucking fun of H-L2.

I heard a lot of early rumors that they were making this game more well lit than Doom 3 (which got a lot of flack for being too dark). Don't beleive it. Resurrection of Evil will have you toggling between flash light and weapon as much as D3 did (still no duct tape there in the future). It's only more well lit in the first few levels. If anything there's more occlusion due to smokier environments and the dimming effect you have to deal with when you use hell time (it narrows your vision with a swirling border). So if that was your big gripe about D3, you may wanna steer clear of ROE.

The graphics are at least as good as D3, which is to say excellent. Sometimes I just had to stop and marvel at the endless detail. It's still largely an "indoor" game with the same mad dashes across the martian surface. One thing I really appreciated was that they seem to use the most annoying monsters the least. No endless spawning of spiders or cherubs like in D3. And that zombie-in-a-closet trick that got really old in D3 doesn't happen much, so maybe the guys at id took some constructive criticsm. Just not about duct tap.

I Think You Will Enjoy This Game

This game is realy great, but I find the gameplay kind of boring after a while. You see if you dont realy care that the gameplay is the same, then I think you should get this game.
Heres my rating:

Gameplay: 7/10 - I realy find it boring after a while because everything is just the same, darkness and enemyies.

Graphics: 10/10 - Amazing graphics and might in fact be the best graphics ever on PC.

Sound: 9/10 - I realy enjoyed the sound effects because they were realy clear.

Value: 8/10 - I think the price is a little bit high for an expansion pack.

Overall I think you will enjoy this game and you should get it.
But know this, first of all you will need good system requirments if you dont want the game to lag.
Secound of all dont expect much exitment when playing this game.
Still I enjoyed playing this game, though I dont think I will enjoy playing it agin. So to get to my point, yes get this game if you liked other Doom games.

a feeble attempt to play catch-up to Half-Life 2

Oh how the mighty have fallen. The zombies at id have barked out yet another lackluster attempt at a game in delivering this "expansion pack" - which should take a normal gamer all of 6 hours (or less) to finish. Quickly introduced is the "grabber," which is much like the gravity gun in Half-Life 2, except that HL2's variety works much better. To appease fans of the orginals, the double-barrel shotgun makes a comeback, which may be the overall best feature of the game (I know it was my weapon of choice). Throwing in a couple of new means of dispensing mayhem and playing around with the DirectX 9.0c effects set does not necessarily make a game good, and the multiple forced tram rides through the game really function as a way to display the game's visual treats but do little to advance the action (I've had more fun at rides through the virtual reality that is Disney World). No doubt some fans of DOOM3 will rise to defend that game and this anemic expansion pack, and point to the "awesome" effects, new multiplayer maps, and so forth. Weep not for these addle-pated players who plunk down good money and then have to rationalize their poor choice, for they get what they deserve, which is not a "Resurrection of Evil" so much as a "Resurrection of Banality".

Excellent improvements made, but cut a bit short!

Okay, first things first: The best two gaming engines out there at the moment are Doom and Havoc, without a doubt! Hell, I wouldn't put Half-Life 2 in the same league - firstly the game is for little girls and secondly the engine (if you can call it that *laughs*) is basically a rip-off of the Quake II/III source code anyway which id Software are fighting back on... now Resurrection of Evil...

The expansion pack takes the scares and the atmosphere of the original and ups-it bigtime! The story is simple - but this is Doom 3 and all I want to do is kick satan's red butt - right?? Goodies: You get the Super Shotgun from Doom II, the Grappler isn't actually the same as the Half-Life 2 Grappler because firstly it is known as the Ionized Plasma Levitator and second you can throw enemies fire and plasma attacks back at them - so it is really cool - a major saving grace! The Artifact replaces the soul cube and gives you three powers, I won't spoil it entirely but one of the powers being Hell-Time. This means you can slow time down to get through various doors before they shut and get the big meanies before they get you - also a major saving grace. The improvements made to this expansion pack really make up for some of the niggly problems with Doom 3 such as when you picked up an item and a baddie would pop-out, they've got rid of that problem. The Expansion is pretty short, half the length of Doom 3 but the enemies are much more interesting and varied now. Sadly no chainsaw - but the Levitator makes up for it I reckon cuz it is so CLASS!!!

Obviously the main thing that will keep Doom 3 going is the modding community and that was always the case - look at Quake III Arena for example. The Doom 3 engine is superb anyway - closesly matched by the Havoc Engine (Painkiller), however Doom 3 was a blast and Resurrection of Evil : Expansion Pack is no excepetion - overall I would say it was a significant improvement and I hope id Software will make a few more mods of the same calibre. In fact there are now some 'free' Doom 3 mods already in the pipeline on the internet (goto www.planetdoom.com for info) - Resurrection of Evil shows what you can actually achieve! Harder than Doom 3, shorter, maybe a bit expensive at the moment but I reckon it is still worth it, you know what? Just go get her!!

Return to Mars to confront evil once again!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 6

It's time to strap on the marine armor, load the shotgun, and take a deep breath as you walk down those dark halls. It's back to Mars to finish off an evil thought defeated in DOOM 3: Ressurection of Evil.

Taking place 2 years later, you (The Marine), return to Mars with more UAC military and scientists to find a signal hidden deep in the ancient caverns. There, you find an artifact, but you 'accidentally' cause Hell to once again come into your world, and now must use the strange artifact to seal Hell for good. Along the way you'll use 3 new weapons, the Artifact itself, the Grabber(Very useful tool), and the Double Barreled Shotgun (Thank you! A must see weapon! It's halarious). But certain demons want the artifact as well, and Dr. Betruger is well aware of it's existance.

Since this is an expansion, the plot may seem short at times. If you've played DOOM 3 and have beaten it in good time, you should be able to beat this in a couple of days, assuming you aren't too scared or don't have too much difficulty beating boss demons. The game also does get difficult fairly quickly, but the new weapons are there to even the odds. The double barrel shotgun is UNGODLY powerful! Want to drop something at point blank range? Use this and BLAMO! Sometimes I feel as if the double barrel shotgun takes the cake for best DOOM 3 weapon, heh. Or want to do something matrix like? The artifact is a powerful tool to use. I won't spoil it's powers, I'll simply say "You have to see it for yourself".

The graphics are fairly much the same, as you will drop your jaw at the scenary, especially when you're transported into Hell. And the use of sound effects and music are once again top notch, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

If you've played DOOM 3 and loved it, then get this expansion, it's easily worth it!

Better than DOOM3

The guys at NERVE know what they are doing. I think I liked this better than DOOM3. They took alot of elements from the original DOOM too, like the exploding barrels, hidden corridors that opened up letting out demons, the strobe lights, etc. They have this sewer level which is just awesome. You put on this environment suit, and in the process it muffles all sound...the sound is just surreal hearing the gatling gun go off with explosions and screams all muffled like that. I never really found myself taking much advantage of the grabber gun though. It just wasnt practical when you had the doublebarrel shoutgun at your disposal. Basically I thought this is how DOOM3 should have played, alot because it reminded me so much of the original. If you didnt like DOOM3 too much, I would highly recommend trying the addon out, as its more of DOOM3 on steroids plus the feeling of the original.

During the writing of this review I'm experiencing the same creative block that the developers obviously experienced when upper management told them to squeeze an expansion out of their rectums. Unlike them, however, I will not resort to stealing random ideas from other games (mainly the grabber, ie the equivelant ofHalf-Life 2's gravity gun) and covering the mess with lots of eye candy and dim lighting.

So, they did manage to squezee out an expansion pack for the DOOM3. I just finished the game today and I have to say that I am utterly disappointed.
First of all, let's talk about the original doom3, with all the poor ratings from mags aside, my personaly experience is poor. There's no doubt that the graphic is surperier, however most times you wont' even get a glimps of the glory, the entire set is way too dark for a video game, at some places even with the "never dying" flashlight you still can't see your own fingers. The story line is pretty simple, no something you would expect from a newer generations of hardcore games, especially from veterian developers such as ID software. I think they focued way too much on the details on the graphics of the games instead of develop a well ploted classic, and may I remaid you that you can't see the nice graphics most of the time!!!
Second of all, the expansion pack. To start off with, I think the game really did finish last time with D3, oh crap, the bad escaped at the end. What's gonna happen? He's gonna come back and cause another Hell return. That's where the expansion pack start. Needless to say, the plot was dry and boring, (IT'S EVEN DARKER THAN THE FIRST ONE). So you go through all these elevators killing monsters mostly from the first one. with the addition of one common one that throws plasma lightbulb instead of fireball. WOW, what an improvement!!! GUNS?? usually the expansion pack come with many new and improved gears and toys to crunch your thirst for blood. The D3 ROE comes with a new "shotgun" that has double barrel and ... wait, that's it! yeh, sorry to disappoint yall, but that was it. Oh yeah... You can't just give us royal fans just one gun for the expansion pack right? Let's borrow an idea from another game HL2, the grabber, you can grab and throw back! How original! For people who hasn't played HL2 before, this might just work as ID's IDEA.
Last but certainly not least, the ending, I can't say too much about the ending, but i can tell you this much, I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT IS DONE when it's done. short and simple, no thinking or other mind twisting strategies, there's isn't even a goshdarn final clip. I mean come on, even the lamest movies have something blow up at the end. THINK ID! THINK!
Ok, i gave it 4 stars from graphics when you can see them, 0 for darkness 'cause what's the point of rating if you dont' know what you are looking at? 1 for storyline since there's really not much to it. and 0 or -1 for the ending. Man, I just can't believe i wasted time for this Resurrection of crap. (try it if you want, if you are really bored)

Double-barreled Savior

I liked Doom3, maybe a little too dark, but my eyes adjusted. This expansion pack wasn't much of an expansion, way too short even for $20! Living in the boondocks and all it probably took me longer to drive to the store buy it, get home and install it than it took for me to beat it, that just blows in my book. I didn't mind the fact that it was pretty much the exact same game because I really did like D3. I find it entertaining running around and mindlessly blowing $hit up. The one part that really saved D3 ROE was the fact that they made up for ID's slip - no double-barreled shotgun! What the hell, it was a great step up in Doom 2 and that crappy version they made for N64, I thought it was a guarantee that we would have been able to use it for the newest addition to the Doom family, but no. I mean come on, it's become a staple in ID's games since Doom 2, why the change? Maybe I'm flippin' out too much about a fake shotgun, but I'm sometimes like an autistic child, I'm very easily amused and upset (I'm going to hell for that one). Bottom line if you are willing to pay $20 for another 5 hours of Doom 3 go for it, otherwise the changes aren't that significant where you won't be able to live your life if you miss it. On a side note, if anyone knows where I can get a mod to use the double-barreled shotgun for D3 e-mail me or post it here. (johnkleineider@northwesternmutual.com) No complaint e-mails about my autistic crack, thanks.
