It was *almost* superb..but spiraled into dismal..

I got on AO shortly after the announced "end" of its Beta test.. except the truth is that it is *still* in its beta test.. the fact that this game was released with rampant *basic* technical problems, and concepts left unfinished and the *total* lack of support, and the total disregard and *arrogance* of Funcom towards the *paying* customers who have to put up with lag and crashing and having our inventories dissapear and thier NO RETURN policy.. well I played my doctor for 157 levels and gave up in dispair and disgust- I was waiting for the story to start.. its not there.. I doubt it ever will be. Thers very little in the way of Role Playing, especially if like me you want to be a "support" player who doesnt want to KILL everything 24/7, because basically they've stripped the game down to that, taking out or just not getting around to any of the plot elements that dont involve killing... I could go on but I wont.. it had *SO* much potential.. and the graphics are beautiful... but its just an empty letdown everywhere else..

This game is not good for one reason and I hope it gets fixed. The servers will crash every 5 to 10 minutes after you spens a good 5 hours getting the thing installed.

Sorry, but this game [is bad]

There is no excuse to release this load of garbage on the public. It has glaring flaws in almost every aspect of the game...from installation, to patching, to game play.

Game is good...but better buy the new releases and expasions

This game is excelent, i have been playing for about 3 years and of course sometimes we noticed some bugs and problems but a lot of them have been fixed by this time. Right now you can access to more expansion of this game and probably my advice is to buy those expasions, last one is Alien Invasion, which include AO Basic game or try to download online without expasion options.

Wait a month to buy

I've played the beta for a while. I'll keep this short. Don't buy the game for at least 20-30 days. It has a lot of bugs to work out. The game crashed every 5 minutes or so and clipping planes are messed up. Walls seem to grow out toward you from the distance. I know it's only beta but this stuff should have been fixed before going live. As it is now, it's not even up to "release candidate" status. Give it 20 days or so. Read the message boards on aovault.stratics.com. When the posts die down about problems then consider getting it.

FYI - When creating a character to change levels and go through the process you are supposed to click on an orange arrow. On my system this arrow is not visible unless you are directly in front of it and in first person view. It took me almost 30 minutes to create my character because I was in 3rd person view. Dunno if this is another bug or not but it might save you some aggrevation.

More Beta that Finished Version

While the game can be fun, there are still numerous bugs including serious server instability. Timeouts frequently occur and you lose experience points and have to "restart" from where the server remembers you were. The longest I have been able to play is 20 minutes before getting a disconnect. There is also a lot of difficulty moving between zones. If I hadn't already purchased the game, I would wait a few weeks to make sure that Funcom gets the game working properly before considering this game. If they can get the bugs fixed, it will be a really fun game.....

To start this off let me say that in no way am I a basher of AO or Funcom. This game has such great potential it is bursting out of its seems! ... You get into this GIGANTIC world and you are literatly amazed at the size of everything! Not only that but the graphics are just incredible for this game thus I reccomend a higher-end system because sometimes in the cities your Frame Rate can drop to as low as 8.5/sec! The emotes are plentiful and run VERY smooth, some are even down right hilarious! For example, typing /moon will make your charector appear like he is dropping his pants and mooning you. Or another is /ymca where he will literatly break out into dancing the YMCA! If this game currently did not have the bugs it did I would have easily gave it 5 stars but because of these bugs I had to drop it down a little.

Once Funcom works out all the tinks the game will work great and will easily become the next big contender in the world of MMPORPGs!

Best Online game ever!!

This is the best MMORPG I have played so far! Its far better than EQ, AC, UO, and the newest game, Dark Age of Camelot.

The graphics are fantastic, and I never get tired of playing. And the game is not as bugged as some people would like you to think. Great gameplay with lots and lots of depth!

I would recommend this to all fans of roleplaying games!

Perfect Example of a Poor Game Launch

Shame on Funcom for ruining so many players first impressions of a brand new online game. Shame on Funcom for not learning anything from past mistakes. Shame on Funcom for promising so much and delivering so litte.

Since AO's launch 2 days ago, the game has been nothing but problems for the majority of the people who have tried it. Funcom promises fixes, promises improvements... but beta testers have received these same promises since day one. Many of the bugs that currently infest this game were known about in the beta, reported, and then promptly ignored. Shame on Funcom.

It's getting better!

Back at June 27th, I might have given this game a mediocre (2-3 star) rating because of its instability. FunCom has actually been working on it, and it is getting more and more stable and less laggy with each patch. I don't want to get into much detail about the instability and lag, it's depressing.

All that melancholy aside, on to the actual gameplay, something that has hardly been touched. I play-tested this game, and it was excellent! It looked very polished, except that my pitiful PC forces me to look at the ground in most areas.

Auto-content Generation (ACG)

This is the best feature of the game. You no longer have to camp an area for hours, or even days, to get something you want. You just head to the nearest mission terminal, set a few options, hit Generate, and you can pick up a variety of missions, that actually work now! Some will challenge you with finding a person, or [geting] them. An automatic mission generator builds your own mission area that only you and those you give duplicate keys to can enter. Most areas will involve combat, but playing with the mission settings can reduce the amount of enemies considerably, such as setting the Physical - Myst slider to "Myst".

Huge World

It took me about 10-20 minutes to run from one side of a playfield to the other! This world is huge, and the weather effects are a nice feature! If you don't want to spend all this time running across a playfield, train on your travelling skills, like run speed and Vehicle:Ground. If you have enough money, you can buy a vehicle (which is permanently bound to your cell structure, so you may never lose it) and drastically reduce your travel time. Then there's always the Grid. You can use it to 'teleport' to other Grid access panels from any point in the world. Grid travel requires a high Computer literacy skill, however. Then you have your traditional two-way teleporters called whom-pah's, yadda, yadda.

A Support Team that Cares

They haven't got all the dents out in C-S yet (such as telephone support), but in my experience, the support team is excellent. A.R.K. is a group of FC employees and player volunteers that show up when you petition, and they are extremely helpful...when you can get to them. My only gripe with the support team is the slow response-time. You could petition them, then two hours later they will respond when you have already solved the problem on your own. Maybe this is a customer support feature? If Customer Support can't help you, the community might. The players, for the most part, are helpful and patient to newbies. The manual is a bit thin, but it provides some great propaganda from both the Rebels and Omni-Tek!

One other thing: considering the scope of this game, the graphics are amazing, and the sound is great.

Bottom line: WAIT! Just as Rome wasn't built in a day, Rubi-ka will not be perfected in a single month!
