The Community Makes It...

Although the game has been around for years, I only got into Anarchy Online in late 2004. This was not too long after they started their free trial. I am still holding onto my free subscription. Truth be told, the gameplay mechanics on the lowest level are no different than any other MMO. However, AO adds a serious layer of depth with the implant and tradeskilling systems. Unfortunately, most players don't get to experience much of this. They are typically put off by the somewhat dated graphics or technical difficulties. But despite the claims, I have had very little technical issues with the game since the start. I think a lot of negative opinions still remain from the poor launch the game had; the game has improved tenfold since launch. Slowdown is to be expected when there are people from all over the world on the same server. However, the exciting world and great community makes up for any technical shortfalls. Players are very helpful for the most part, especially a lot of the so called "Fr00bs" (free players) who are just as curious to learn as you are. Although PVP does have it's niche, it is very very insignifcant compared to some of the other PVP dominated games. This is actually quite refreshing, as it limits some of the 1337 pre-teens who only find validation in their PVP skills. A lot of the quality experiences found in AO cannot be put into words, the best way to find out is to try for yourself. You have nothing to lose, it is free. Load up the game, start a character, and go exploring. Go at your own pace, avoid the grinds. You will then begin to see the great vision of the developers unfold before your eyes.

Worst Game Ever

Wow, this is THE WORST GAME I have ever played. The items are worthless, you can't sell anything, and its so easy to get high level items, there will be so many high level people it will screw up the balance of the game. I hate to say it, but Id rather dust of my Dioblow 2 than get this game fired up again. Laggy, Choppy, Cr*ppy. That sums it up. Sure it may improve with time, but the gameplay simply isn't there. Funcom turned out to be a real newbie in the world of MMORPGs. EQ is tons more fun. Stick with EQ, you will love it.

Not Worth It.

Lag, Crash, Lag... If you want a real online playing game, go play Asheron's Call.

Serious Launch Problems, Security Absent

Hello,

Funcom really dropped the ball here. They didn't even secure their registration servers. Who is going to register using a credit card when someone could steal the information?

The game has had a terrible launch. I looked forward to it starting, but from the information posted online so far, this has bombed. Wait a few months if you want to avoid the frustration. EQ is frustrating at times, but it isn't anything compared to AO. You have been warned!

Apparently the CD Key codes have been hacked. Funcom will require proof of purchase and I strongly urge anyone who orders this to save all receipts both electronically and paper.

Not worth the time or money

I have loved some of the other MMORPGs that have come out including all three of the big ones, but i have alot of problems with this one, mostly because of mechanics. Camera angles are BAD. Player movement is BAD. and the whole game is too dark. Playing this was like playing EQ for the first time, but at least EQ got better, this never does.

Finally, the game is like I expected it to be.

It's absolutely been worth the wait. Anarchy Online is the game it promised to be. The game has improved dramaticly over the last few months and is still evolving (like any Massivly MultiPlayer Role-Playing Game should) and I just want to shout: "Come and play!" We, the players in Rubi-Ka (the world in Anarchy Online) are having a great time together.

I also would like to stress that these types of games (MMORPGs) is new, fresh and constant evolving, tweaked and improved, thus any "old" reviews does not give it justice. Play it yourself, follow the continued story, interact/socialise with people from all over the world and have fun. That's why we play isn't it?

AO is 5 out of 5 fun

AO is graphically worlds ahead of EQ or DOAC or AC or Lineage the list goes on... Lens flares, 3D textures - wonderful varied zones with by far the best plant life trees rocks small animals, birds and robots - social facilities like bars and discos - incredible weather patterns and a beautiful sky.
The Sound in AO is fantastic, the sky darkens and suddenly your surrounded by a field of lightning crackling and smashing into the ground with enough power to throw gravels and rocks into the air around the contact point.
MOBs of any shape and size.. but be careful rubi-ka is not a place for wandering idiots.. you must be on your toes.. the world "if" your adventurous enough to explore it is vast and filled with beauty and danger.
The landscapes in AO are second to none no more fields of hard angles and [bad] textures gentle slopes rivers lakes massive rock formations swamps that look as intended!

Give this game a good look, it's free to try!

Buggy to the point of being ... This game doesn't work.

Frankly, I'm unhappy to give even one star to a game that simply doesn't work. I've seen a lot of buggy releases in the last few years, but this is so bad that it borders on ... I paid ... for what was alleged to be a computer game, and instead got a rule book and a piece of software that simply does't run.

I spent more than a week trying to get the problems with the game straightened out. I exchanged numerous e-mails with FunCom's customer support (average response time about 24 hours), but none of their suggestions worked. In the end, I was still disconnected every single time I tried to log onto the game. Their explanation was that my ISP was incompatible with their software. This seems doubtfull, particularly since my ISP is America Online. So they either don't know what they're talking about, or they've managed to design a game thatis incompatible with the largest ISP around. Neither condition fills me with confidence.

I'd like to say that things might get better in a few months, but given the extreme problems with the launch, I really don't think that these people have a clue. Don't waste your money on this game.

a...coffee coaster

Anarchy online is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game set on a fictional planet in the distant future. It has an evolving storyline that uses the classic rebels verses the establishment theme. There is no magic in the game. The traditional magic element is replaced by almost equally mystical use of nano-technology. Players can assume the roles of spies, soldiers, doctors, nano-technologists and other various futuristic professions.

The graphics are lovely and it has fabulous sound effects. There are no zones (ala Everquest) except for entering apartments, cities and quests. THe interface is... usable...

The only problem is that the entire experience left me cold. This game is so lovely that it was almost sterile. Where is its heart and soul?

If you love the future and need a switch from the previous MMORPG's on the market try this game. I, in the meantime, will sadly set my coffee cup down on my new...coffee coaster and wait for the next big thing.
