Fun but disappointing...

The Multiplayer is second to NONE as far as FPS go, but the Campaign once again falls WAY short. Where are the huge battle-sequences Humans vs Covenant? Where are run-and-gun battles?

And the a Big question I have is: WHY THE FRICK doesn't the Arbiter have his cloaking device???

(Some content removed after beaten on Legendary)

The storyline was too closed ended, too "shoot this->walk here->shoot this->walk here->shoot this->walk here." There was very little open-endedness or what gamers like to call 'the Freedom to Roam' built into this game, so it ends up feeling like your just traveling from Point A to Point B and then back to Point A over and over and over.

Where are the large Covenant/Human battles we were promised? There could have been a LOT more included in the campaign...

Also, why do you die when you walk into the water or fall from a semi-high place when you're ok with deep space and survive a 3 kilometer fall at the beginning of the game.

To sum up: H3 is H2 with better graphics, streamlined weapons and seamless game-play.

Halo 3 is the best game PERIOD!

Those people that are rating Halo 3 with one star are being little Playstation 3 hOr-babies. I mean, come on... are you really telling me that you are willing to lump Halo 3 in with the likes of Yie Ar Kung-Fu, Cyberball 2072, Bomberman Act Zero, Hour of Victory, Pimp My Ride or Fusion Frenzy 2? Your arguments would have some substance at maybe three stars, but one?? That's just DOOPID! I would call you mentally retarded, but someone who is mentally retarded cant help themselves. I know you are smarter than that.

Halo 3 is the best game that I have played, period! Halo 3 has more packed into it than any game that I have played on Xbox 360 or PC. You definitely will get your money's worth out of this game.

Even if Halo 3 is not your most favorite game, you have to admit it sure is a good one. For instance, I am not much of a PC gamer and I hate World of Warcraft and those types of games, but I can understand that it is a decent game that deserves a good rating.

If you are concerned about going through the campaign in Halo 3 so quickly, then step it up to Heroic. Once I am done with the Campaign, I will spend endless hours on Multiplayer, Forge Map Editor, Four Player Co-Op, Theater, and hopefully getting all of the Achievements.

So, if you want to cry and complain, go do it all on the Sony Playstation 3 forums. Because, when Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out, the LAST thing I would be doing is putting out bad reviews of a game that I don't want to waste my time on. Think about it and don't get back to me, 'cause I don't care.

fun, solid shooter

I just finished the single player campaign on heroic setting, which was just about the right difficulty. Overall this was a well done game. The graphics are pretty, the framerate is steady, and the controls worked well. The environments and enemies are varied and I was never bored. The length was decent as well. THe multiplayer game will give lots of replay value. I still like Rainbow 6 Vegas better, but I like Halo 3 better than Gears of War. Every 360 owner should at least give this a try.

dated but pretty

Halo 3 quick rundown:

It looks and sounds gorgeous.
It's considerably behind the curve on FPS games for the 360.
It looks like it was built more for the online multiplayer crowd than the at-home single player audience because it seems awfully short.

More detail:

The music, surround sound, gun fire, etc., are all awesome. Noticably better than other games, including Gears. As good as Bioshock's, which I thought was quite good.
The graphics are very nice, especially the vista-views. The foliage and water is pretty good, though it's not quite in a same class as Far Cry's foliage or Bioshock's water. The weapons/bad guys/character models aren't as crisp as many other games, which is a shame since that doesn't seem like it would have been that hard to do, but I suspect it plays into the target audience thing.

As far as what I mean by it being behind the curve, I mean that in other FPS games, like Gears, Rainbow Vegas, or GRAW II, there is a very useful, very nifty, fairly realistic "cover" system. You can flatten against walls, reach over obstacles, and those games, while different systems for each, were fairly intuitive and an intergral part of the game. Halo 3 has none of it. No cover system at all, which makes it feel very dated to me. Would it have been so hard to incorporate one of those systems? I really had trouble with that for the first few minutes playing and then it faded into the background, but overall I think it's a pretty big deal. I think that's also true of the aiming (which is too arcade-like for me) and ally and enemy tactics, which are better in those other games. Now someone might say those are tactical shooters and this is a run and gun shooter, but I had a dastardly time getting used to having my allies run around and ignore me, run into the open, trip new bad guys arriving, etc., when I've been so used to (basically since I got the 360), having tight control of my team/allies, or at least having them not be idiots.

Also, from what I've read, the game is very short. 10-15 hours depending on how quickly you go. By comparison, I'm not even halfway through Oblivion and I'm into 80 hours of gameplay. Now I know they are not the same kind of game, but it would be nice to have a more thorough story. GRAW II took me 25 hours or so; Gears a little less, but both those appear to be twice as long as Halo 3. I spent not even an hour last night and finished the first chapter already. That seems to bode ill for a long game. The first Halo took me a long time and had a long story. The second one I blew through in a few days. I'm afraid this third one is more the latter than the former.

So overall I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars. Very pretty, very smooth, but technologically lacking for a shooter, if it it's as short as people say, it's main value will be in multiplayer, which isn't my cup of tea.

I wouldn't run out and buy a 360 just to play this game. Rather, go out and buy your 360 to play Gears of War or Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter II or Oblivion or something, but not for Halo 3.

[UPDATE:

I just finished the game. It only took about 12 hours, which seems rather short. That said, I have two new comments:

1. The game gets even more intense-looking and the graphics are beautiful. The story really picks up and gets kind of interesting towards the end, but...

2. I literally could not understand the cut-scenes. I don't mean that they didn't make sense (they may not have) I mean that throughout the game the giant uni-mind of the Flood is talking at you, as is Cortana, in these weird dream-like sequences. But I can't understand what they are saying. I turned the volume way up and it was still unintelligible. Did no one else have this problem? I tried replaying them even. I would only catch a few words per sentence, and it really ruined these scenes for me. I still can't figure out how the one ship ended up at the old Halo, or how Cortana was being tortured by a giant flood creature when she's a software construct, and this may all have been explained, but I think I need to read the book to figure it out because the dialogue was unintelligible).]

Other than that, the rest of my review is the same.

Dissapointed, more of the same

I'm really dissapointed, the game improve on graphics and weapons, vehicles, artifacts, but playability is the same, there is no improvement or further sofistication from previous versions rather than graphics. Campaign is really fun (finish the fight!). But live, after playing a lot of live in Halo 2, becomes really boring, and more boring yet if you compare it with the Gears of War live experience, which in my opinion is way ahead of Halo 3 in terms of playability.

It's still just Halo with some great extra features, but definatley worth the money.

It's Halo. That equates to GREAT multiplayer. Online, and off. The game isn't perfect, but worth every penny of $60.

This game could easily be played for 200 hours if you're an avid gamer. I mean it. If you pay $50, that is precisely 25 cents per hour. This game has a great storyline, singleplayer, soundtrack, and the graphics aren't bad either. As I said, you can beat the game in any one of these points. But for Halo 3 to do a really good [not perfect] job is incredibly impressive.

Of course, there are other great shooters for the 360 and the PS3. (R6:Vegas, Bioshock, Killzone 2, etc.) I'd say Halo 3 is in the top ten games of this year. Buy it, it's worth it.

I finished the fight!

Well it's finally here, and I must say, its all that I expected and more.
Here's a quick rundown...
Graphics 4/5, definatly top notch, but the 360 can do better

Sound 5/5, will full dolby surround, it sounds like a movie. Best I've here on a console

Story 3.5/5 pretty short story mode, however its a very good story with plenty of ooo and ahhh moments

Multiplayer 6/5 multiplayer is where this game stands out, it has a very organized party system which makes it easy to get with friends, 4 player co-op over live is a blast, and sharing screenshots and videos is alot easier and cooler than other games.

All in all 4.5/5...Try or Buy? Definatly buy, you can't go wrong with Halo

It's OK-Pretty Fair Game

Of course everyone knew that this game would not live up to the extreme hype-that's a given. I played Halo 1 and 2, and liked them pretty well, but ws never a fanatic or anything-i like shooters, but am not that skilled at them i prefer the 'free roam' type games like GTA Saints Row, etc rather than traditional FPS, which, after all is what the Halo games are.

I usually pick up all the major releases for 360; I figure that if I really don't like a game, I can trade the premium titles in for a good exchange anyway; I usually try to play through the game at least once to see how the story goes; if the multiplayer is good I might keep it for a longer time. My favorite games of course I hang on to. I got this a few days after it came out. The graphics are OK-like most 360 games the cut scenes are better rendered than the game play but the graphics are still quite good. The weapons, from what I remember, are similar to the first 2 games, the controls are the same which is good.

I'm playing on normal level and still die quite a bit (again Im not good at shooters). Once there are Brutes around I'm dead. The things that giggle at you are annoying but pretty easy to kill. I know it's blasphemy in some circles, but to me, this is a fair game, nothing too bad, but not earthshaking either. I think Gears Of War was better-and that game, although very good didn't live up the the hype either (to be fair, I don't think any game can).

Bottom Line: If you liked Halo 1 and 2, you will like this. If you're not much for shooters, (a) it will be hard and (b) it may not impress you. Also I would not buy a 360 just to play this. GTA IV, yes. This, no.

Freakin fantastic

This game is pretty much everything I've been waiting for in a Halo game. The campaign could have been longer, but it was a decent length. The multiplayer options give this game a tremendous amount of replayability. The new Forge and Theater features are just brilliant. Users can review games and take screenshots, share with friends and review them on Bungie's web site.

The campaign supports 4-player co-op over Xbox Live, a feature that is quite fun and amazing.

Aside from that, the game itself demonstrates the power of the Xbox 360 nicely. The graphics, in my opinion, are fantastic. People poo-poo the graphics, but there are always going to be people who are never satisfied no matter what. Other than the obvious, there are a tremendous amount of little things that add to the greatness. For example, shell casings that pop out of the gun actually make a sound when they hit the floor.

Then there's the enemy AI. On Legendary, you can really tell the quality of the AI. Brutes work in packs to surround you. They organize strategic group-assaults on your position and command smaller units around. It's pretty impressive if you know what to look for. This is a must-have for xbox360 fans.

Pure video gaming bliss

Everything that I love about gaming is available in this one little box. Great story? Check. Fantatic action? Check. Detachable Warthog guns? Check. Epic ending (be sure and watch after the credits!)? Check.

The Elite and humans have joined forces since the Arbiter being cast out in Halo 2. Disgraced and distubed by the truth behind the halos he rallied allies and struck a civil war against the covenant. Master chief is now forced to work with the Arbiter who together are burdened with the task of saving the world from total anihilation. What ensues is the best gaming bliss, movie theater experience that I have ever had the pleasure to endure. I loved Halo, hated Halo 2 and can't say enough about Halo 3.

The visuals in Halo 3 are absolutely stunning! Of course I have a 42" LCD Flatscreen HD TV, but even on my sons regular TV it was purely georgeous. The voice acting and onscreen cinematics will/have set the mark for other games to aspire to. When Microsoft first acquired Bungie after the first Halo, I have to admit that I was a bit concerned about the quality of future games from them, thinking that MS would be about money first and quality second and sad to say, Halo 2 confirmed my worst fears. I was on the wire about Halo 3 and refused to listen to any of the hype surrounding it this time around and I have to say that I have never been happier about being proved wrong. Everything about this game is quality. The co-op (split-screen or multi-link) allows for upto 4 players, each playing as a different character from the game. I'm not an online gammer (sick of getting killed 2 seconds after entering a map by some punk named deathmaster) and I was concerned that Bungie might have focused more on the multi-playing aspect like so many other game makers out there today, but I was extremely pleased by the length and quality and fulfillment of playing Halo 3 solo. I know I'm not the only one that does not enjoy playing online, so if you, like me would rather play solo or you can't live without online multi-player access, then don't be afraid to drop $60 on this game. Like Bioshock, pure fun, pure quality.

Just buy it already.
