Settlers and Civ

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

I have never played Age of Empires so I cannot say too much about that game. I like Empire Earth however. In some ways it looks like the incredibly funny Settlers games and it has some aspects of Civilization. You start in the stone age with rock throwers and through 12 epochs end up in the future.

Sometimes the computer is tough, even in the easy game but it makes it more challenging. Definitely worth the price.

Time to be a part of the EE legend.

Some RTS (real time Strategies) touch upon the past. Other are trapped in the future. Empire Earth is one of the first to span the ages in 14 Epochs passing fin the 22nd century. What first caught my eye about this game was the trailer released this spring showing mankind evolvement from a tribe of rock toting scavengers to mechanized Titans bending time and space. At first glance you might be overwhelmed by the shear size of the game but the authors where wise enough to allow the players to specify Starting and ending Epochs, resources, and even number of workers. The game is both pleasing to the eye and fun to play and unlike many RTS to date build orders (a specific way to build units that will win every game) can not be developed to make the game obsolete. The openings are randomized to such an extreme that even the "Pro" may be thrown off as to what to do. Why is this important? Well it gives every player in the game a chance to win.

The standard paper, rock, scissor, theme used in matching units so no one unit can dominate has been so refined that some units can only kill another type. This makes for a more realistic game. The zoom feature brings out the detail of the game and the 3-D effects can be breath taking. The AI (artificial Intelligence) used to make units attack or retreat is one of the most advanced to date. Not only does it work well in Multiplayer games but many players have comment on how well it handle single player games.

The Empire Earth community on line is growing everyday and at MFO ( ...) new players join the ranks everyday. The only short coming of the game is the Multiplayer feature which has software that needs updating but Sierra representatives have assured this update is on the way and indeed on the server end improvement has already come. This would well be a 5 star game if the server issue was resolved.

Pros: Outstanding Graphs
State of the art AI
Flexible starts and finishes

Cons: Multiplayer (which is being addressed)

I feel the game can be played by expert to amateur alike and you shouldn't miss this opportunity of getting a piece of gaming history which has won twice
"The Game of the Year."

Nice game, but not the best

This was a very nice game. It takes your basic RTS and expands it to cover a lot more of history. But the problem with covering a lot more history is it doesn't get as indepth as AOE II, for example. Anyone that advances through the ages slowly will be overrun by even small more advanced armies. It focuses less on accuratly historical parts of the game, and there are no special units based on civilazations in history, mostly because there are no civilizations. With no special technologies or more chocies on how to play the game, it becomes point and click game-play, with no strategy. In general, it's not too bad. Good path-finding, balenced units, and a nice way of playing, but there is no detail. That what really holds this game back, is the lack of detail.

A MUST PLAY GAME

This game builds upon everything Age of Empires was missing. You can evolve and progess through eras to a date in the future. The computer is very challenging in the death matches. The game play online is awesome. This is a must play game. Sierra has done it again.

The best in depth RTS ever!

Empire Earth is probably one of the most realistic RTS (and best)games to date. You can play and fight at the beginning of time, or in the future, or anytime in between. The units are very realistic and acurate to each time period, and in this game, it is very important to stay ahead technology wise. Remember capitalism 2? It has the same idea, but it's a RTS and MUCH more fun. One thing I really like is that you can't mass units. You have to have a good mix of units to win because ever unit has advantages and disadvantages, so a good army will have 3-10 different types of units, or maybe even more. Although the game is harder to learn than most other RTSs, it is a well worth it, and a great addition to anyones collection.

PROS
+Many different units with their own characteristics.
+14 epocs with it's own set of units and buildings, and look.
+Very customisable.
+Doesn't require and extremely fast computer to play but takes full advantage of really good computers.
+So many stratagies are possible.
+Fun for many hours.
+The better the computer, the better the graphics.(Looks awesome on awesome computers).
+Great sound effects.
+Deffinently not another generic RTS.

CONS
-Big battles get jerky on computers barely meeting system requirements.
-Online laggy without broadband.
-AI good but could be better.

If you have a computer that can run this game, get it. It's worth it.

A evolutive game

The game is (maybe) the best game about strategy, you have many feature and you can build, almoust, everything. You run from early ages and can arrive to cultures in the future. Your culture will improve itself (according your command) and challenge many others groups.
It's obsesive and you can spend many hour enjoying and learning tips and controls, but it's very funny. You will enjoy it a lot!!!!.
Only be carefull about your Video Card, you need PCI with 3D or AGP 4X for a good experience.

"Epic" is justified!

Being a long-time fan of the "real-time strategy" genre of computer games, and being a fan of the predecessors to this game ("Age of Empires", "Age of Kings", etc.), I was excited to see what the next generation would bring. I was VERY impressed. The scope of this game is amazing... not just in the historical time frames that it covers (the stone age to the nano-technology future) but in its game play.

I am the president and lead designer of a computer game development company - with a speciality in game artificial intelligence (AI). Normally, part of the enjoyment of a game is lost once I get a handle on how the computer AI works. That is not something that is easily done with Empire Earth. On one hand, the rich, complex AI of your own units works just as you would expect it to. That is a necessary comfort when faced with an enemy AI that may NOT be doing what you would expect. Very often have I massed my forces on a front line or the main gate to my city only to find the enemy knocking on my back door... and knocking HARD! It's no wonder that the guys from Stainless Steel are regular contributors to the specialty books on AI for game developers!

I must admit that the game looks and plays best if you have a system that can really crank up the screen resolution. The more of the picture you can get on screen, the more massive the game feels - and the easier it is for you to run large battles... and those battles DO get large. I was just recently in a battle that had HUNDREDS of individual units on BOTH sides of the line... to be honest, it looked like one of the big Hollywood productions they did back in the day of Ben Hur... or the kind that are all done on computer like the battle scenes from the "Lord of the Rings" movies. The only difference is that YOU are in charge!

In the end, I very much recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of being the big boss! It certainly gives you the opportunity!

If you get it, it's incredible...if you don't, well...

This game is very impressive in terms of detail, which makes it quite a game. But, the only problem the game has is that, if you don't get it, you won't get it. For people who wanna spend a lot of time playing a game, this is the game for you. As it mentions in the Cons of the game, it is rather difficult. But if you want a challenge, this is it.

My only complaint is that unless you have a very powerful computer, you can't have the highest graphics settings, or the game is slow as can be. But if you turn it down to medium or so, it'll work well. And the ability to zoom in and out allows for some awesome scenes. Plus, the fact that the game has 14 epochs, where you can go from caveman to robots makes for interesting gameplay.

Great fun..for a while...

All in all...Empire earth is a fabulous game. It is Age of Empires, only one step further. In AoE you can go all the way to the early rennaissance and a little further. In Empire Earth we go there, then to the two world wars, on to the modern age, and ending in the future, where we control robots and fly hovering fortresses.
I HIGHLY reccommend this Game for Strategy loving Players, who like a little *kick* to their game.

I had never played a RTS game until EE, but let me tell you, after the detailed tutorial and a few random maps(skirmish mode) I was all set. Unlike what some people say, the game is n00bie friendly if you pay attention to certain balances(i.e. F-117's trash everything but AA's, towers, walls, and F-15's).

Three of the Campaigns are historically correct(the fourth one, Russia, is in the future). You can play as the Greeks and fight the Battle of Troy and actually make the Trojan horse. There is also the English Campaign where you must help young William in his struggle to power, later on you must fight Napoleon and his army. One of my favorites is the German Campaign where you will fight with Allied forces for control of Europe(you even get the Red Baron). After WWI, you get to try out some of the early stages of WWII. Finally, you have the Russian Campaign in which you must help a young man named Grigor to evade pursuit by the Russian government, then reconquer the former states of the USSR.

This has got to be one of the best games I've ever played, if you don't have Empire Earth yet, you should seriously consider buying it.

*Note* One reviewer said something about sharpshooters with different health, that was probably because the AI either upgraded the health or got the ranged infantry health Civ bonus.
