Pass on EQ2

Have to disagree with the previous poster.

What relates to EQ and SWG as far as SOE game philosophy and operations will apply to EQ2 and therefore be on topic. The guy from San Diego was right, EQ2 will suck.

Also there are people beta(alpha) testing EQ2 already, it's just not a public beta yet.

I played EQ for a long time but found it to be more focused on grouping with each expansion and thus more and more content was denied to casual gamers. We don't all live at home with mommy in order to be a powergamer in a hardcore grouping guild.

The amount of corruption and favoritism with player guides and renegade godlike GMs in EQ was out of control. It's laughable to suggest you can just report them when they are the ones screening the reports.

Try the demo, then buy WOW.

Well, I was curious how this game would be with all the hype. I almost bought it, but then decided to buy WOW since I'm a big fan of Blizzard. Today I found the EQ2 demo online and gave it a try. First, you will need a powerful computer to play this game with. I could not get any decent game play on my Athlon 64 3000 with 2 gigs of ram and a geforce 5500. To get any decent amount of movement out of the characters required me to dump the quality down to unacceptable levels. So, I decided to move this to my main Machine (Athlon 64 3400 w/geforce 6800 GT) and I was able to up the gfx up to acceptable levels. I still was not able to set the gfx to their highest quality. Second, While I constantly hear people raving about the graphics in this game I have to disagree. Most of the characters... no, all of the characters look like they were dumped out of Poser (a canned 3d model creation program... considered a toy by any real 3d artist) and they all lack any kind of personality. The only place where the graphics look good is in the texturing and the fancy shaders, but this stilldoesn't hide the lousy modeling job. In on of my characters, as he runnes and moves you can see a polygon (a flat triangle) poke out of his rear end. This is inexcuseable. Also, I would have to say that these people have never actually seen a drawing/painting of dwarf or an elf. the lack of atristic talend in the 3d modelers shows the greatest here. All the humanoid characters look the same except for height or pointed ears. While you could say that WOW looks more cartoony, it's obvious that a lot more talent went into the creation of the characters in that game.

Next, lets talk about the voice acting. It sucks. End of story.

Ok, now for the game play. Go fetch this. Ok, now go fetch that. Ok, now go fetch that other thing. Ok, now go fetch this other thing. Ok, I know this is the basis of most MMORPGs, but there's not even a story behind the quests in EQ2. You feel like you're some kind of delivery person. WOW has a great story and each character is very unique in it's race and it's background and this really adds to the game play. EQ2 has nothing of interest.

Bottom line: I'm glad there was a demo for EQ2, because it just saved me about $30.00.

I am an avid game player, XBOX and PC Games I own over 100. I bought EQII expecting a great Role Playing game. I got a game that is frustrating and forces my computer open to the internet by making me turn off my firewall.
I have a 3.2 Ghz Pentium
NVidia Ultra 5700U
Ultra High Performance 500 Gigabyte Harddisk in a raid 0 configuration
2 Gigabytes of dual channel low latency 3200 memory.

I Play DOOM3 and HalfLife2 with no problems on their highest graphic setting and get framerates well over 60.

The game will occasionally, the last three days, choke my system frame rates drop to the point I can't control the character. The travel time involved in questing is horrendous. It is tough and no productive to solo. You are forced on line and cannot play with out connecting and paying a subscription that is close to the same amount I pay for 4 MBit cable internet access. In addition the servers are frequently down. Even a level 12 I find the questing repetitve and boring. Soem quests are never ending. The Tour of Antonica took forever and gave almost nothing. Give me DaggerFall!

I am very frustrated to purchase a game for $50 and find out I can only use it for a month before they force me to pay another $21 every month for the same stuff just to make sure that I don't lose my tediously earned character.

My advice DON'T BUY THIS GAME!

EQ II was not my cup of tea. I found the game somewhat unbalanced. There is a lack of people that play on all the servers. Every server has "low" population status. I do not not like how the system randomly hands you down spells when you gain a level. It feels like im being babysitted by the game. I started a dark character and found myself somewhat stucked in a ghost town in Freeport. I also made a non-evil character and found myself in the same boat. After reaching level 15 on both my characters, I got really bored with the game. Some quests are impossible to do just by yourself. Other players are scattered out in the game and are not willing to help you if you ask them in order to do these quests. If you enjoy playing in a ghosttown and hearing NPC's ramble about dumb stuff, then this game is for you.

Personally, if you are looking for a great MMORPG try Final Fantasy XI Online or World of Warcraft.

Sony has failed to bring out the "everquest" in Everquest II.

After reading the recent negative comments, I felt I had to step in and comment. I love EQ2! as long as you have a powerful enough computer, the enjoyment level cannot be surpassed.

The real key to enjoyment is having a powerful PC with a really good graphics card... P4 3Ghz+ 1G Ram with a GeForce 6800 GT/Ultra or similar level from ATI - when you have that you can get immersed in a world like no other.

The level of beauty and detail is amazing, the voice acting elements of the NPCs put the game one step closer to being in reality. I have played EQ1, SWG and watched some WOW and they don't come close in enjoyment for me. EQ2 has much better solo and group content (than EQ1), so if you are not the group type that is ok too, but the real fun escalates when you group and even better join a guild.

If you want to simply get into a game and do the kill mob grind and don't care about existing and interacting in an amazing world full of eye candy then this may not be for you. If you want to get away from this world and live in another world for a few hours, make friends all over the world, etc. Get EQ2.

Been in Beta from Day one. This game is amazing. I dont see how anyone could not like it. It does require a decent system but not overboard. 5 stars and if I could give it more I would. Buy the game you will love it. Also ... EVERQUEST 2 5 stars ++++++

Everquest 2 is fun on all levels

I have played Everquest 2 since it's release and I just have to say, you must play it to believe it. The graphics and sound effects/music are just amazing. I invested in a high-end graphics card around for around $400.00 and have made every penny in enjoyment from this game out of that video card. You can adjust the graphics from low to extreme, depending on your video card, and usually you find a good balance between great graphics and fast game play. The graphics and worlds must be seen to be believed.

The development team is constantly changing the game up to keep the game evolving. The customizations you can make on your character are vast, as are the variety of classes you can play. Sony has made changes to make tradeskilling more basic and less confusing for some, so when you get tired from adventuring you can go make yourself or your friends some items such as food/drinks or armor/weapons.

The game is only as time consuming as you want to make it. Even if you play for only 5-10 hours a week you can still have enjoyment and advance your character at a good rate. They have released numerous expansions and dungeons that make the game continuously fun to explore and advance in.

I have played 2 other MMORPG's and this has blown them both away. The crowd is a mature, mid 20's type of players with very rare instances of immature players scattered among the zones (few compared to the other MMORPG's I've played), which is a nice change.

If your computer is capable of playing Everquest 2, I would definitely recommend getting the game and trying it for at least a month.

This is the worst outfit around in the MMOG world, and that is saying something.

From game design, to playability, to long term appeal, their games are bottom of the barrel.

And regarding customer service - forget about it! You are just a dollar figure to them, they don't give a you-know-what about anything else like improving their products or listening to feedback from their customers and making appropriate changes.

For an example, go to the Sony station forums for Everquest 2. There you will see a section titled "The Glass House" (the title alone is a dead giveaway of SOE's attitude towards their customers), where customers who complain about EQ 2 threads are all locked and sent. This gives you an idea of what SOE thinks of their customers. If you don't love their game and act like a sycophant and praise every boneheaded decision they make, you are persona non grata.

EQ 2 continues Sony Online Entertainment's abysmal track record.

EQ-great graphics, poor Customer Service & bugs

I probably will play EQ II, especially if Worlds of Warcraft is delayed. EQ II promises great graphics, however those rating the game right now have not played it--or certainly not played to any great extent. Star Wars Galaxies was great fun to me--but only for the first month. After the first month, SWG ran out of content and became a grind (especially how they implemented the Jedi system). (SWG Is also produced by Sony).

Everquest Customer Service has an extremely poor reputation and recently John Smedley of Everquest apologized for rushing out the last EQ expansion Gates of Discord. But the problems at Verant/Sony/Everquest go back for years--most notably for me, the great Monk nerf when Sony decided to gimp an entire class. Everyone who has played Everquest has their own horror story. Everyone who has played Everquest feels that they are not listened to.

What makes a great game is more than graphics--EQ II will be changed on the implementation, game immersion, and content. And on past history, Sony has not had great success here. It's possible EQ II will be a great game. It's possible, I suppose for alcoholics/crack addicts to change and get religion. I don't see how its possible to rate a game well from a company that has rushed buggy versions, crushed player classes, and ignored every good suggestion thrown at them for years (until now they are facing competition they have implemented increased healing to minimize downtime--heck I wondered who'd design a game that required a thirty-minute break between fights YEARS AGO!).

Yes, in the game, there are times more often than not that you need a group. And yes, more often than not, you will need help from fellow adventurers online. But think about it, when you are up to slay a dragon, a griffin or something considerably bigger and more powerful than you, then yes you will need help taking them out.

The "bugs" in the game are also an issue, but that's the beauty of online gaming. "Bugs" can be fixed. I agree that there has to be a point where everybody can "solo" the game, but if that were so, buy a console game. Online gaming is more about meeting people, not just gaming. And while the price is kinda high to subscribe (a whopping $15.00 a month!)i for one find that fair. its just like paying for cable.

Overall I give the game 4 stars mainly becaue there are a lot of issues to be fixed. But i'm willing to deal with that because ultimately its about the experience for me.
