home world cataclysm takes place some years after the completion of the first home world which means you now have your home planet back and your people are no longer on the run and everything about it is even better than the first truly awsome.

Best of the series!

At first look this game really only adds a few ships, gives some new technology and improves the graphics slightly, but once you play into the single player you'll see how truly amazing it is.

The single player storyline is certainly the highlight and reason this game is so magnificent. It retains the general 3d feel of the first Homeworld game and it's nice to see a few of the original vessels in there, while it also adds a good few new technologies which are very fun to use. The storyline is perfectly laid out with the drama of every single second a mission is played clearly giving an impact.

This game is a lot like the first, but what makes it the best has to be the story. Brilliant fun and good for people appreciating a nice mix of action and story.

Awesome

This is seriously one of the best computer games that I have ever played. The game takes a lot of startegy and takes awhile to learn but once you get going it's terrific. You are given a mission or multiple missions to complete during a progress campaign to stop the Beast enemy from wiping out all who stand in their way. Playing the game at harder and harder difficulty levels makes every mission all the more challenging to complete. The graphics are incredible, especially considering that this is hardly a new game. Everything looks realistic, from the phasers and torpedoes to the ships fading in and out as they move farther away from the viewing camera. Controlling an entire battle fleet is a challenge, but the controls are easy to use and fighting battles on three or four different fronts at the same time is not difficult. This game will be a lot of fun to everyone who enjoys strategizing and engaging in massive space battles.

Fun?

I just have one thing to say: this game is as fun as you can throw it underwater with your wrists chained to some wall. Also, the interface and mere gameplay feels like an act of congress (looking up how to do things in the manual!) To be frank, don't by this game even if they would give you money in return!

Yuck!!

Having just played Homeworld and not really enjoying it, I tried this one, the second game in the series (I bought all 3 at the same time. Shouldn't have done that.)

And so far, I can't even get the game to play. I installed and uninstalled twice. I have downloaded updated drivers for NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200 128meg video card. I have changed all of the settings over and over again. And still can't play. I see the beginning story in the aftermath that follows the end of Homeworld, of them rebuilding. But as soon as I see the ship fly in on the first cutscene, I get kicked back to Windows.

My recommedation is if you have XP, don't get this game. So far, it's more trouble than it's worth. So now I guess I will try Homeworld 2.

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I loved the origanal so I had high exspectations. The graphics are phenominal, but the gameplay sucked. I finished it in a week. Unlike the original that took me the whole summer. If you want the a good game buy the original.

Addictive!

This is an absolutely amazing game. I've lost jobs because I couldn't go to sleep until I beat a level. I'm an old guy, I'm supposed to be responsible. I first found Homeworld, the predecessor to Cataclysm, in the $10.00 bin. It said "Game of the Year" on the box, so I decided to buy it.

Like its predecessor, Cataclysm is a 3 dimensional real time space stragegy game. However, it is not of the Descent or Tie Fighter genre, where the question is how fast you can shoot. The thing that make it so addictive is that it also includes elements of a simulation (such as sim city) and the battles involve stragety rather than how fast you can point and shoot.

The basic story is that 15 years after returning to their homeworld in the epic game Homeworld, a Hiigaran mining space vessel, the Kuun-Lan, inadvertently releases an intelligent interstellar virus of sorts which can subvert living and inorganic matter, almost instantly turning your own ships against you. Eventually, it allies with your enemies, the remnants of the old Taidan Empire, which you (hopefully) wiped out in the first game. You have to conduct scientific/engineering research, build ships, mine resources, and upgrade the mining vessel until you become one of the most powerful armadas around. You get to be the General, rather than the pilot!

Gameplay is similar to Homeworld, but you have the ability to "speed up" the game play to 8X "reality." This is particularly nice at the end of a game level where you want to "harverst" all of the resources so you will be able to build more ships. With one level on homeworld, harvesting all the remaining resources could take over an hour.

The game graphics were excellent for their time, and are very detailed. In fact, they are so good that the scenes between missions use the game's graphics rather than specially done animation. In fact, on the DVD "Yes -- live at the House of Blues," there is a music video of the Yes song "Homeworld" which uses only video from the first Homeworld game.

Great

Unlike the first homeworld, there's less micromanaging. the Game is incredible. A true challenge for someone who thinks they're tactically competent!!

Not bad...

I purchased this game with thought that it might have a wider ship diversity, and was totally right. There are tons of new ships and different weapons/upgrades. This is a slightly better game compared to Homeworld. Some things that are worse is that if your gl link(I'm computer literate and don't have a clue what this means) is non-compatable and you aren't using a windows 95/98 computer you have to download a patch from the sierra website, do this anyway because it took me about 4 hours of messing around with the game before I found this!! Another thing is if you like using the multiplayer and are using the Beast ships you are totally outgunned. I've gone into a battle with 12 ion ships and 2 heavy cruisers against a Dreadnought and lost every thing but the cruisers. Other than that, it is a great game and I can't wait for Homeworld 2 to come out.

Good game all around

This is a great space stratagy game with a few things wrong. The game gets old fast. The levels take to long to complete. I havent really played multiplayer but I found the resources to few. This is a great game if your looking for something different and/or really bored.
