Slow at first, then picking up speed.

I bought this game looking for a good RPG, and a less gothic story line than Diablo 2. The story is gripping, the plot is well thought, and what you can do is quiet impressing. You can chose to be a warrior, mages, paladin, ranger, cleric, bard, theif, and a priest. Or, you can choose to be 3 of these at once on one character. You construct a party of 6 members, each having his or her on unique skills, and battle through perilous dungons collecting rare items. There are legendary blades of fire that can be obatined only once a game, proving to be quiet a task. Also, the multiplayer action is "lag free".

Now, the game will start out slow, but it will pick up speed later on. I advise you not to buy this if you're looking for utter mayhem, gore, blood, continuous killing, and frequent action. There is on average, at least 200 monsters per dungon. You can levels like in Diablo, but there is a skill cap of 1,801,000 exp points.

So, to sum it all up, it's a good game. You'll want to play it more than once, but probably no more than 3 times. I've gotten 1/5 of the way through and I've had it at least a week.

Thank You

I actually purchased Icewind Dale after I bought BG2 and in my opinion BG2 was not that much better. Icewind Dale definetly has the best sound out of any game ever made. The graphics are a little sketchy, but still beautiful to watch and admire. The gameplay is a lot more linear than BG2, but I actually like the linear parts of BG2 more than the wide open areas, so that was definetly one of the aspects I loved about this game that some people hated. Because this game is based on the 2nd addition AD&D rules the gameplay is fast and gracefully complex. Im sorry if I compared Icewind Dale to BG2 to much in this review, but there is just so many similarities between the two. Overall Icewind Dale is an amazing game that supplies many hours of fast and furious RPG action.

Baldur's Gate in the arctic

Icewind Dale uses the same engine from Baldurs Gate(not really a bad thing:) yet it seems to have a feel all its own. though a bit too linear in comparison to Baldurs Gate, its still great fun and excitement. i also like it because you dont get killed every five seconds like in Baldurs Gate. My only real complaint about this game is that there is a limit to the number of experience points you can get, and most classes can only go as high as around 15th, 16th, or 17th level. Other than that, it is an awesome game and a must-have for fans of fantasy rpgs.

Almost There!

I really like the Icewind Dale Series. If you are into D & D it is a must play. The one limitation with this game is the sequences are pre-planned. You as an adventurer must form a complete party, and you go place to place in the order in which the game proceeds, linear. Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 are both similar games but much more complexity and freedom than this one.

... too linear

the quests in this game are too linear. there are probally 10x the battles in this game but usually you can get out of things by giving coin. any game with the BIOWARE INFINITY ENGINE would get an automatic 4. I would have given a better rating if the game hadent crashed. although its not as stable as BG or BG2 it is worth the 20 dollars.

I've always been a gamer, but I was never an AVID gamer until Icewind Dale came along. The game sucked me in and wouldn't spit me out until I had finished it. The game brilliantly allows you to create not just one hero, but a party of heroic companions from scratch. There aren't any generic Diablo characters here either - you don't just pick a pre-made warrior, sorcerer, or rogue and begin hacking away mindlessly at your foes. You get to fine tune so many aspects of your characters that just creating a party can take hours (and it's bloody good fun!). Despite the battle-oriented gameplay (which requires considerably more strategy and brainpower than anything in Diablo), this game is a pure RPG all the way. My only complaint (aside from the game actually ENDING eventually) is that the game design is somewhat linear. All the same, the game is masterful at hiding this fact, and indeed, this element keeps the story strong. Icewind Dale is a brilliant game. Period.

Great fun

after playing Baldurs Gate 1 and still replaying it once in a while when i feel like it, i liked Icewind Dale a lot, and it gave me the chance to build a whole party for myself, but, i kept missing the personalities of the pre-made characters you find on the Baldurs Gate series, and i sort of expected more of them, but otherwise it is a good overall game, the lack of different characters to invite into your party makes it loose a little in replayability but thats maybe laziness on my part, so if you love RPG this game has it in spades!

I hate this game!

I must say I was very skeptical in buying this game, but to tell you the truth it was maybe the best decision's Ive made in along time since Diablo 2. Wonderful stroyline, and awesome gameplay, best music I have heard in a game since Chrono Cross, and Diablo 2.....A must buy for RPG fans!!!!!!!

Way better then BG

Inoticed that alot of people who have problems with this game say that it is good compared to BG. However I had all the problems they complain of with BG. Considering that the Character choices (except for the one you start with) statuses were extremly bad. In Icewind Dale this is fixed in the beginning you select all your party. I don't know if this was done in BG2 (since I did not want to buy the sequel to a game I could not finish not understanding the plot) but it should of been done in BG1.
