GTA meets Dead To Rights

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 8

Imagine the free-roaming capabilities of GTA with the fighting techniques of DTR and you'll get an idea of this game. There are so many fun things to do with this game besides the main missions! You can frisk any and every person on the street for drugs or illegal weapons--though you might tick a few off enough to fight you! If you get to certain parts of town (the rougher neighborhoods) you can just stand there and watch the street crimes happen around you! And it's your choice as to how to stop them. If you take the people down and arrest them, you earn a "Good Cop" rating, but if you choose to just blow them away, you earn a "Bad Cop" rating. While this doesn't affect gameplay much, it will affect the ending of the game. The missions are fairly linear, but it's the "between mission" activities that set this game apart. You can go to the gym and improve your fighting skills (you can't do much to start out with), or go to the shooting range to get better weapons with your score (and don't expect to just walk in and start shooting-some of the targets fire back!). You're going to have to remember where everything is though, because you might have a hard time finding a hospital/first-aid station when you're really needing one in the 200+ miles of LA you're driving through. If you enjoy GTA, this is definitely one to buy. The cars handle differently, so if you're chasing a perp in a stolen vehicle, you'd better think twice before commandeering a limo to chase them with! One warning: the language here is serious, so it easily earns it's "M" rating. The only other major gripe with this game is the camera angles. You could be fighting several guys at once and have your character all of the sudden staring at the camera with no enemy in sight. And try chasing a mugger down the street when you can't even see what's going on! By the time you adjust the camera to get behind your character again, it's too late. A single button reset would have been good. Otherwise, a fun game.

The gameplay system of "Dead To Rights", the Jacking ability of "Grand Theft Auto", A similiar Chinese Mythology to "Fear Effect"(I wonder why they put this in a city type game, it's not really realistic)And It a Chow-Yun Fat movie cover(Doesn't it look like the cover of the replacment killers?) Well this is how it breaks down
Pros:
Great Graphics
Hollywood voice acting
Banging soundtrack
Pretty good story
you can be Snoop, allright!
cop missions range from simple arrests, to exploding shootouts
Can carry 2 weapons(And they don't have to be the same)
Cons:
Game can go from easy, to straight out hard
The stealth missions are no brainers(just hit person before you hear a buzz)
The game isn't really all that bloody
The chinese mythology isn't really nessacery
WAY 2 SHORT!! OI beat game in 2 days, with all endings
Why can't I upgrade from pistols to automatics, that woulda been tight
Automatics run out too quick
Sometimes, old ladys have guns, is LA really that bad!? Maybe
That Korean guy is a big thorn in my side, every time I fight him.
Neutral:
Unlimited ammo to me seems like cheating, but it can be good at alot of times
The replay value is depending wether you like the game or not

It's got a ton of flaws, but it somehow won over my fun side. It may not be near the GTA franchize, but it's something good to play while waiting for the next Grand Theft Auto. It's a much better choice than State of Emergency, which I failed liking while waiting for Vice City. I recomend a rental, you'll beat it in a short time, and if you like, then you should buy, if not, well it's better to waste $4 than $50.

Peace

Entertaining, but NOT all that its cracked up to be

A few weeks ago after sucumbing to the pressures of my slowly depriciating PC I picked up a brand new PS2. I debated what game to play, and as a fan of the GTA series (of which I have played extensively on the PC) I decided to give this game a chance. Suckered in by the slick advertising campagin and cool premise (what could be better than a GTA-style driving game, with Max Payne style gun battles and an integrated fighting system) I went home, eager to hook up my new system and give this game a shot. While I have not been disappointed per se, the game is also not what I expected. First of all the pros:
-Incredible graphics (the game has some slick cut scenes, and overall the graphics are pretty cool. Not mind blowing mind you, but quite well done.)
-The Missions (while some might quibble over battling demons and dragons in a game entitled "True Crime", the missions as a whole are quite enjoyable, and it has a surprisingly interesting story. In this respect it is far more akin to a cheesy Hollywood action movie than a "serious" game (I would recommend "Mafia" for those interested in a great game with a cool, believable story line). If you can suspend your disbelief to dodge sniper bullets in slow motion, take out twenty guys in five seconds and use limitless ammo then you should have no problem fighting a dragon and other mythological Chinese creatures. Sure you'll probably blow through the missions in this game quite quickly, but the added features of being a good cop (stopping crime gains you points) or a bad cop (blowing away civilians, shooting criminals in the head instead of taking out a knee cap) allows for the possibility of multiple endings. In addition, the free driving mode (ala GTA) is pretty cool. Essentially, you respond to emergency calls that range from simple muggings, to prostitute street brawls, and domestic disturbances. These random encounters are probably one of the strongest aspect of the game and you never know what you might encounter (is the little old lady involved in the altercation on the street going to whip out a gun and start blasting away?)
Overall, though the missions (even with the free driving) may not maintain the playibility of Vice City (you'll likely be tired of this game in a few weeks) it is enjoyable none the less.

That being said, here are the cons:

-Poor style of game play. (This game promises so much, essentially portraying itself as a driving, shooting, fighting game. Sadly, ALL THREE elements are lacking. The driving lacks the finese and control of GTA (a game which still maintains the bar for this genre), the shooting while enjoyable at times due to the "bullet time" aspect (ala Max Payne 1 and 2) and the slow motion targeting mechanism, also suffers from a terrible control system, that makes targeting anoying (auto-targeting is terrible and far too easy) and the unlimited ammo feature for me detracted from the games appeal. The fighting elements also are sadly lacking. What could have been an elegant system (ala Virtua Fighter) of combos, special moves and attacks, essentially devolves into a bunch of random button pushing that is far more entertainng to watch, than it is to actually play. I appreciate the "learning" elements (you go to a dojo to learn new moves, or the firing range to pick up new weapons) the combos themselves are limited and boring. Even given the range of possible attacks in this game, I still found Vice City far more entertaining with its simple punching and boot stomping elements. A sad sign indeed that this game is lacking in that particular aspect.

Overall, I would actually rate this game as 3.75 stars out of 5. When it works it works and you will be blown away, but when it sucks, it sucks hard and you'll be wondering when the hell Rockstar is going to put out in the next instalment in the GTA franchise. This is definitely a game I would recommend RENTING, or buying when the cost has gone down, but as a new game I would not recomend shelling out the rather expensive price tag...

A trully fun game to play

I was blown away by the first time I played this game. I like the way everything handled(controls, story, gameplay). I really like how you can go after bad guys as you are driving to your objective. The voice acting for the main character is just funny. I can see this game turned into a movie.
The graphics are pretty good. All in all, it's just a fun game to play. I'm glad to have unlimited ammo for the main character's gun. One reviewer said that was dumb becuase it was unrealistic. C'mon guy, this whole game is unrealistic and with most video games out there.
You should buy this game. The chase scenes are fast and the game is smooth to play(storyline wise).

At a first glance, True Crime: Streets of LA is just another GTA clone. But when you actually get into playing it, it becomes a LOT different, and a lot more interactive.

As Nick Kang, your job is an LA flatfoot with a short fuse. Your antics have gotten you in trouble more than once, and currently you've been suspended. But, the police chief decides to give you a second chance by admitting you into the Elite Operations Division (EOD) to try to crack down on a major threat the Chinese Triads have forced upon your city.

Like GTA, you can "steal" any car you want to drive. The only difference is that as a police officer, you're just commandeering them. But as you progress though the game, you learn driving techniques, such as quick turnarounds, nitro boost, and even riding on two wheels.

The shooting system is a bit far-fetched, but works out fairly well. Your basic handguns (because Nick likes to shoot with two) have unlimited shots. They do, however, have a number of rounds in the chamber, so you will have to reload them once in a while. You can pick up other weapons, including Kalashnikov assault rifles, SPAS shotguns, and .45 revolvers, but those guns DO have an ammo limit. In addition to just your normal target-and-fire abilities, you can learn different types of attacks by visiting shooting ranges.

Last but least, Nick is also a martial-arts master. When trying to apprehend suspects, you can use your kung-fu to take them down instead of shooting them (which can get you into trouble). As you visit more dojo locations, you learn more combos and special attacks that can help you kick your enemies to the pavement.

The story is very rich, with an interesting cast of characters, and very good voiceovers. There's an aire of maturity of a good shoot-em-up action film, plus a lot of comedy throughout. You get to explore the entirity of Los Angeles in full detail, from the ratty subdivisions to the high towers of the downtown district, even all the way up to Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

A few drawbacks do exist, though. Seems like the missions always involve the same premise, but just get a bit more difficult each time you do them. More mission diversity would've been nice. Also, crime happens EVERYWHERE, even as you're just standing around outside of your car. These crimes are optional to do, but they can be distracting when you're trying to get from one place to another. And the soundtrack is almost completely west-coast rap. I'm not a big fan of rap myself (I'm more partial to heavy metal or rock), so I turned the radio off. Kind of gets weird when you don't hear anything while you're driving around.

Overall, this gets an 8 of 10. It's fun, it's well designed, and it'll keep you entertained. I recommend a rental before you buy, though. Some people who are GTA fans may not like it.

This game is very fast-paced. You play as Nick Kang as a cop who was suspended and came back for the case of the russins and chinese who are trying to make LA a swamp land of there's. You first must do a shooting practice and shoot ten targets. And this game takes a long time to beat, anyone who thinks they can beat this game in under 5 hours is lying.I have had this game for about 3 days and I still haven't beat this game, anyway this game is fun and exiting and you don't no what is going to happen next. Bottem line:GREAT GAME!!!!!!!

don't set yourself up!

Don't set yourself up to be disappointed. Don't believe the hype. The game is not as good as they made it out to be. I barely scratched to give it a 4 star only because it has my boy Snoop D-O-W-G doing his thing as a cop.

I would never dare use the word orignal to describe this game. The fact is that you are guaranteed to like this game only because it contains so many of the elements that we gamers come to love and appreciate such as elements from vice city, max payne...etc.

The game does get boring and repetitive sometimes. I also did run into a few bugs, like Nick & other characters running thru walls and characters getting stuck in the scooby doo running position. Another thing that I absolutely hate about this game is the fact that a criminal can literally stop (grab) a car that you are speeding and take you out and shoot kill you without you having a chance.

I also noticed a lot of things that didn't make sense. You can search a civilian and find nothing and as soon as you turn around, that civilian is robbing someone at gunpoint...nonsense! To add to the craziness, people are getting raped in broad daylight on the side of the street (while people walked over them)...I also arrested a FEMALE rapist who I caught raping another woman...it was kinda sexy tho'
I was also a bit surprised by the amount of curses.

I noticed other glitches such as the enemy's guns floating in the air after you kill them. These things just cheapens the game! At this point of the review, I am so tempted to reduce their ratings to a 3; however, since this appears to be a compilation of some of my favorite games and to be honest, it is a pretty decent game, I will allow it to remain a 4 start.

Go ahead gamers, buy this game. If anything you can also count on the continuous game play and crusin around LA to keep you entertained.

Could have been so much more

True Crime could have been so much more, could have lived up to the hype about being better than GTA Vice City, but as it is, it's a game that was moving in the right direction and has good ideas, but the end result is flat. The elements are in the game, but like an idea that sounds great on paper, but then is fumbled when trying to bring it to life, True Crime disappoints. Perhaps it's because in a post-GTA world, gamers expect a lot. GTA III raised the bar for gaming, and has many imitators. GTA Vice City, while familiar, was an improvement on GTA III. GTA III and Vice City both have a sense of what they are, and where they want to go and how they want to get there. You can mess around, but still the goal remains, to go after the guys who "went" after you. But True Crime is rather listless with characters that are hard to feel for. That's unfortunate for it all looks and sounds good, but something's amiss. Perhaps it's passion, something that both GTA III and Vice City had.
