If you like being abused, this game is for you.

This game used to be one of the best MMORPG, you could customize your character, and at least feel unique among thousands of other people in the Star Wars universe. Now you're forced to select cookie cutter characters, including a nerfed Jedi class which gets killed fast in PvP, and even in PvE against NPCs which are 30 lvls below you. SOE/LucasArts decided that they don't care about what veterans think and introduced the NGE (New Gaming Experience). The sad thing is that SOE/LucasArts will probably even change this game around 6 months from now, so whatever hundreds of hours you play to build your character will be destroyed.

Save your money and play World of Warcraft, City of Villains, Guild Wars, or any MMORPG that isn't run by SOE.

A huge disappointment

When I started playing this game in November 2004, I though "WOW! This will be the only game I play for the next 5 years!"
And if things had stayed the way they were, I'd still be playing. It was a fantastic game with a fantastic community and enough to keep you busy for years.
Since then they have implemented many changes but 2 major ones. The CURB (Combat Upgrade Re-Balance) and the NGE (New Gaming Experience).
The CURB promised to deliver balance and bug fixes. It simple shifted the balance in another directions, and ended up creating more bugs that in fixed.
The NGE again totaly altered the way the game is played. Making a once complexed and immersive game, no better than a first person shooter.
I recommend you spend your monthly fees else where, and if you must play a Star Wars game, you are better off with Battlefront 2.
In short even if you get the game and start playing it, and even if you enjoy it, remember these 2 things:
- How it is now, is not how it will be in the next 6-8 months. Its likely to get worse. and.....
- It used to be SOOOOOOO much better.

A huge letdown

The game is full of bugs and little/no communication is being given from SOE as to the status of fixes.

The quests in the game only take you to level 30 and there are 90 levels. So after achieving level 30 get ready for a long, tedious grind.

Normal items do not decay and all have pretty much similar stats so there is not much diversity in the way of crafters.

My advice is to save your money and buy WoW instead.

If you love bugs and poor customer service, SWG is for you!

The combat makes me sick to my stomach. It's absurdly fast, and you have to keep your enemy targeted. The enemy runs much faster than you do, and they tend to congregrate together, so you run the risk of aggroing all the enemies at once. And then dying. I can't seem to stay alive. And did I mention the movement makes me sick?

The game is now a level-quest. You quest, you kill, you level up. End of story. End of game.

This used to be a diverse, multifaceted game with 36 professions. You could mix and match skill sets to come up with what you wanted. This was one of the selling points of the game, originally. But now it's all gone. Pick from 9 "iconic" SW professions, like TooOneBee (21B). You know, that iconic medic droid who healed Luke. Uh huh. Oh, and Jedi used to be sort of rare, because it took forever to get there, rightly so. Now you can start as a Jedi! Not that you can do much though.

If you are seven years old, and like first person shooters and are a rabid Star Wars fan, then get this game.

If you are intelligent and even remotely mature, and like to immerse yourself in a well thought out SW universe, then pass on this. It's too bad that's it's gone so downhill.

Oh, the new player tutorials and the first 10 levels aren't bad. They did add some good stuff to it, mainly to hook all those new players they will need since all the vets are quitting. But once you get past that, there's not much else to do but kill kill kill.

It's very much a downgrade. If you *have* to get it, try the free trial before you waste your money. Or go look at the SWG forums.

As a current (but quitting) customer of this software, I can only advise you to purchase the starter kit if you're 12 or under. That seems to be the demographic it was designed for. The entire interface has been dumbed down to monkey level and 2/3rds of the games original professions have been axed. Beyond level 30 it's nearly impossible to progress witout the mustafar expansion. This is just the general playability of the kit; the details go downhill from there:

-ui amok with numerous bugs that the current userbase asked to have fixed before it left beta;

-crafting systems conglomerated and nerfed to oblivian

-movement cannot be accomplished by mouse alone, as the developers have now locked out multiple mouse keys for other functions

-bugs in other systems to numerous to go into here, but including categories:

crafting
combat
a)weaponry
b)combat levels
movement
space and space combat
visual effects

If you're just getting this kit for your child, he or she might certainly enjoy it. If you're a serious gamer however, don't say you haven't been warned.

Disapointment, Pass on this game.

I started to play Star Wars Galaxies over 2 years ago and after the last change I have canceled my 3 accounts.. I am not the only one to do this because more and more people who have played this game since beta have also canceled accounts. The developers of this game (and no it's not only Lucas Arts) have completely changed this game from what was a fun game worth the time to play to something that is frustrating and no longer fun way to spend time. I would recommend you take a look at the Star Wars Galaxies Forums to see what people have to say if you doubt any thing I have said.. And if you do buy this make sure you have some friends to buy it also because the servers are becoming increasingly more vacant with less and less people and with no one to play with you will find that the game is not fun to play.

In the end I would say pass on this and get World of Warcraft or Guild Wars instead. Guild Wars has no monthly fee so once you buy the game it will cost you nothing to continue to play, which in my book is a plus.

Not worth a long term investment

I started playing this game when it was launched in summer 2003. I stopped playing in May 2005 after the Combat Upgarde was rolled out: I didn't care for the changes to the game. After hearing about the New Game Experience (NGE), I decided to come back and check out this new version of the game.

The new version of the game is pretty easy to learn and easy to play. It's actually pretty fun for a while. They've set up a great series of quests to pretty much take you through the first 30 combat levels. After that intital quest is over though, you're on your own and that's when the fun stops.

Other posters have complained about a buggy system and bad customer service (and these are valid points), so I'm not going to go over the same old complaints. My big complaint is that there is nothing really to hold your interest in this game because it's not finished yet: they haven't put in place a complete system of quest based character advancement to take your character all the way from level 0 to level 90.

The idea of a quest/story based system of leveling your character up is not new in MMORPGs (it's very well done in City of Heroes/Villains) but the problem in SWG is that the quests end after level 30. Not to say that there aren't any more quests in the game after you finished the "noobie/Legacy Quest" but as the primary system of advancing your character the quests end at only a third of the way through the total profession advancement, and the levels only take longer to achieve the higher you go. This leaves you with nothing to do except running missions endlessly for very low experience point grants and huge experience point requirements are needed to advance in combat levels.

The formerly thriving player run economy has been shattered in this new system as well. Everything that your character will ever need can easily be looted off any NPC or will be automatically provided to you for advancing in combat levels. The weapons that players loot are also generally better than anything that crafters are able to create anyway. And none of your equipment will ever decay. This removal of decay has essentially destroyed the need for crafters. So the crafters are no longer able to be self suficient and are in fact completely dependent upon the combat classes which in turn have almost no need for them whatsoever. You might need them a couple times to buy certain objects (good armor and maybe a house) but you could very well play this game for months and never need a single player crafted item.

And that is what robs the game of its depth and long term playability.

Perviously, the grind for experience/credits was a means to an end because you needed to buy *something* (weapons, armor, housing, etc)so that you could go do *something* (quests, PvP, town building, etc) else. And when that *something* decayed and broke, which it always did eventually, then you had to make sure that you had the money to replace it. This kept the economy running because the crafters in turn had to also buy resources off the combat players so that they could build the weapons/armor/housing/etc. It was a cycle that felt rewarding to participate in and kept gamers interested in the long term gameplay that MMORPGs need to survive. Crafters were also perviously able to be combat players as well, so that they could be more independant in their resource gathering (to a point anyway), but now they can no longer take on combat professions as well. In this new system, new crafters are dumped into the world with massive resource requirements simply in order to master their professions, but not given the means to buy/loot those resources and there are far to many veteran crafters around for any player to want to buy products from a new crafter. From everything that has been done with crafting/loot, it appears that the crafters are being phased out of the game.

I don't even know where to begin with entertainers. Once they were a class of healer characters, now they've removed the need for their form of healing, so entertainers now seem only to serve the purpose of creating lag around the cantinas in Theed and Mos Eisley. They've been turned into the most useless class I have ever seen in a MMORPG. Playing as an entertainer is like paying fifteen dollars a month for an online chat room.

Ultimately, the existance of veterans themselves is also a huge determent to the game in its current form. New players simply cannot compete in PvP against the long term vets who are already at high combat levels. Even for the most ardent gamer, the current system would take well over a month (probably 2) playing at least 8 hours a day in order to achieve the highest combat levels. Any new player who wanted to participate in PvP would be discouraged very quickly by being killed in one or two hits from top level players who are nearly twice their combat level. There is no system in place that prevents high level players from killing low level players: a simple restriction of being unable to engage in PvP combat with a person 5 or 6 levels above/below your character's combat level would go a long way to opening PvP for everyone, but this is something that I don't believe that I've ever seen in a MMORPG.

LucasArts and SOE are moving the game towards becoming something else, more like an online console game; I'm not going to whine about that any further: it's not my preference, but I can honestly say that there is fun to be had in this game despite the flaws that I've listed. However, the big problem is that console games generally have a much shorter lifespan than PC MMORPGs (months as opposed to years). The quandry that I see is the player population will never be able to replenish itself fast enough and, by the end of 2006 in all likelihood, this game will not be able to sustain a profitable population level, at which point LucasArts and SOE will probably have no choice but to pull the plug on this game.

Waste of Time and Money

Imagine, playing this game for nearly a year, putting in 5 hours a day, building your character, buying all the best weapons, armor, etc., to have it all mean nothing over night.

It was a great game, until they revamped the entire game and took away years of hardwork of thousands of gamers.

They lie to the community and they break promises. They make promises that they know they will never follow through on, and they do it outright, its almost hilarious to witness.

They released a new expanions then told everyone only days later that they were revamping the game (which they new the whole time) makeing many items in the expansion worthless. It was so bad they had to start offering refunds.

Put 2 and 2 together, I need not say anything more.

The game has been cut apart to a dismal shadow of something that used to be awesome.

The developers have removed the features that the players liked best about the original game:
The ability to choose your own path by taking on a mix of skills from several professions, so for example in the past you could be an expert with a rifle, but also a dancer, or a medic, or a crafter, if you so chose. And you could change your professions at will.
Now instead of over 30 professions to choose from, like before, you have 9 boring stereotypes with no ability to customise or select skills.
They also replaced an excellent, simple, and logical interface with a confusing and buggy one.
The game is nothing like it used to be.

If you spend your money on this game you are wasting your time unless you like games that lack content, fun and quite literally made me sick. Upon login, I was unable to stay only for more than 20-30 minutes because the new FPS system that Sony has implemented into the game gives me motion sickness. Don't waste your money...PLEASE.
