Have you ever played a game you wanted to love, but the game doesn't love you back?

A lot of Survival Horror games get a bad rep. for possessing painfully clunky controls and too much back-tracking, but they all seem to be directed at the wrong games and never at the right game. The right game to blame for the worse controls known to man in Survival Horror gaming goes to one game and if not just this one, then the rest of the franchise that spawned from it: FATAL FRAME.

Tecmo had a lot of unique ideas going through their heads for this game, but apparently the one thing they weren't thinking of was the one aspect that would've made this game worth the constant praise it gets.

Does this make any sense? You're playing the entire game as a nineteen year old girl who walks and runs slower than a drunk elephant. Plus, the controls are permanently in 2D meaning that up will force your character to do a 180 and walk in the direction you point her in. Fine in theory, but you have to realize that using 2D controls in a 3D game based entirely off of exploration and using set camera angles that change every time you move to a different room or fight ghosts is not a good idea.

What's worse is that enemies you face in this game move so fast and use up 99%.8 percent of the terrain to their advantage that it's next to impossible to try and hurt them without taking any damage in return. The ghosts are also so vocal and whiny that their dialogue literally murders any atmosphere they had. It's like the game developers were trying to piss you off rather than scare you.

The game is very innovative and unique what with using a camera as a weapon and fighting ghosts as your main enemy, but facing such unfair, questionably malevolent enemies with such unfair controls is about as fun and scary as being chased by a shag carpet in tennis shoes.

One of the best games I've played. The music, sound and atmosphere are most desirable. Good fear factor.

I bought this game after reading more than 15 reviews in Internet and now that I played it I think it was money and time worth. It was about time somebody released a survival horror game based more on atmosphere than the usual resident evil shoot-everybody style. Also the camera is a good and believable idea
since you find ghosts inside the mansion and how are you supposed to get rid of already dead entities? It is very spooky; when you are inside you'll jump for every sound also if it comes from your chair! It is slow paced and addictive, it keeps you glued to the screen in spellbound. Graphics are good but in my opinion light shadows as well as the general horror moments are better in Silent Hill 2 where you feel more the unpleasant subject. Sound is the very good part since it adds more to fear than else, when you listen laments coming from somewhere.
Playability is quite linear and scripted but fair.
It deserves credit also for the originality
In my opinion it is next to Silent Hill 2 and far better than Resident Evil, let's hope somebody will take the hint and do more atmospheric titles for old-fashioned scares.
All in all a very good experience for the open-minded survival horror fan that prefers have inner emotions than use gun.

First of all, this game has been compared to Silent Hill. If you aer getting this game and you think you are in store for a Silent Hill adventure, then you are wrong becasue you take pictures of the ghosts to kill them "again," you do not chainsaw them or shoot them as blood squirts everywhere. However, like SH, the environments here are very scary and will give you a good playing experience. There are many "spooks" in this graphically well-done mansion you run around in, and the story is somewhat sick as you discover the very "weird" rituals the ex-family of the mansion enjoyed doing. In other words, they liked killing their family mambers for fun instead of sitting down for a Sunday dinner...just play to find out, but keep in mind this is no Silent Hill or Resident Evil, this is a unique horror game with GREAT Graphics but not so good controls (you should get used to them over time).

This is the first survival-horror game that I've really gotten into. Look past the stunning graphics, the creepy sound effects, and the novel concept,(use an antique camera to fend off ghosts) and you've still got yourself a great game. And an absolutley horrifying one.
Whereas the average Resident Evil relied mostly on slasher movie type jumps and jolts to get people uncomfortable, this game relies mostly on psychological horror. Which is not to say that it doesn't have it's fair share of jumps and jolts. It does. But by the time they come they have a much graeter effect because you're liekly already very scared.

This was a truely awesome game! Possibly one of the best i've played! The storyline is interesting and captures the imagination right off and the games ability to scare you and catch you off guard every time you play it makes it a great buy! The intruiging story line and supsencefull gameplay allows even thoughs simply watching to become drawn into the game. I agree completely that this is the scariest game ever, the only true downfall i'd say the game has is that it is perhaps too scary. The game is near impossible to play at night and i'm not even about to attempt it in a dark room. Even after you put the controller down it can effect you. While I highly recomend this game for players I also recomend that those who are frightened easily stay away. This game can cause insomnia, fear inspired nausia, property damage(sudden ghost appearances might cause a player to drop or throw their controller, seen it happen) and night terrors(extreme fear of the dark) in all ages. Fun booster Tip: Best played with alot of people watching(seeing everyones reactions can be priceless :)).

I have been waiting for this game for months and I have not been disappointed. All I can say is get the game. I got the best experience playing the game in the dark and with surround sound. This game will be game of the year.....

A game that I just Rented ysterday, Fatal Frame is the ultamate thrill ride (or so to speak). It is scary, and it's not a game to be played in the dark. iT is a bit short for a horror game. I SAY ITS RESIDENT EVIL , WITH A TWIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i only got about 1 1/2 hour in to the game but i was at home all alone in the dark with the surround on and it scarred so much i would almost jump when i could feel the heart beat in the analog
i would definately recomend to purchase this game
