Grand Theft Auto: Vice City...

Transmission from Database......

Subject: Tommy Vercetti

Case Details:

We have all seen the destruction and mayhem of Liberty City set in the present day. Now, my research has led me to a similar incident in Vice City back in the 1980's, though on a much larger scale.

Tommy Vercetti came to Vice City with nothing and ended up with everything. Whether he still controls Vice City to this day, I have no knowledge. I have read through the files concerning this, most notably the rise and fall of the old rule, the corruption of politicians, back end deals, explosions, and sheer chaos which forced the Vice City Police, FBI, and Army to seek Federal funds to restore order.

Status: Case Closed

Grand Theft Auto 4 or Vice City, is an enormous game jam packed to the hilt with everything the PS2 is capable of doing. You take over the show as Tommy Vercetti (Ray Liotta) and wreak havoc in this place. there's no other way to describe it. Here's a few interesting points:

1. You can buy mansions, strib clubs (and hang around for a couple of drinks if you want just to watch the show), dance clubs, taxi services, ice cream factories.

2. The malls are large and explorable - to some extent.

3. Mr. Vercetti, the business owner, wears a sharp suit or a casual suit. Tommy Vercetti, the street punk (one in the same)wears jeans and a weird tropical shirt.

4. More weapons than the military

5. More of everything -hey, this is set in the age of excess right?

6. Take a street girl for a ride or pimp if you want.

7. Motorcycles, boats, your own Helicopter, almost 200 vehicles, RC planes (used for certain missions -interesting)You can still do unique stunts but you also get to pop wheelies (in a car with two wheels on the ground) strut your stuff on a motorcycle or off road dirt bike.

8. Work deals and once you start owning things, the city owes you. Create protection programs which generate cash and have your clubs make you rich...well, if you need some pocket money, there's plenty of unsuspecting citizens who fall down and give you cash. Heck, do an ODD job and get some more dough.

9. Cast of celebrities doing voice-overs - Burt Reynolds, Jenna Jameson, and of course -Ray Liotta...Mr. Goodfellas. Plus a few more.

The graphics are pretty decent and the controls are exceptional. You can't go into all the buildings, but there's quite a lot to visit. I could rattle on and on about this title because there's so much involved in the game and different ways to play it that I could write a hundred pages. To be honest, the first few dealings in Vice City are a little boring, but then it steam rolls you into power, control, corruption, backstabbing "friends" and sheer ruthless chaos that it leaves the first few missions behind.

Watch out for one thing...or maybe this is a few things, but who cares. The police are not as simple in intelligence as they were in GTA3 - not knocking GTA3, just a fact. Your wanted rating is of prime importance to you. Here's a little info:

Wanted rating:
1 Regular Cops come after you, but you can shake them.

2 Regular Cops become a relentless pursuer.

3 Undercover Vice Cops join in plus a helicopter.

4 Just like 3, only more intense

5 Here come the FBI

6 The Army, tanks, FBI, Vice, and every other law enforcement in reach is after you. And these guys don't give up (nor do the citizens performing "Citizen Arrests."

Rainy weather, hurricanes, slippery roads, half-nude women...and so forth. Definately the hottest game of the year, or the sickest and most twisted.

Better in some ways, not in others.

The original GTA3 is probly one of the best PS2 games to date, but how does this semi sequal live up? well, in some ways better, in some ways not, let me explain.
In GTA3 you had a nameless character that you could call yourself, but in GTA:VC you have a name now giving it less of a personal appeal, for some people its better, for some people its not.
In GTA3 I found the city much more intersting and fun to explore than Vice City, I don't know exactly why, but Vice City's city just seemed too much the same, and the color scheme hurt my eyes (pink everywhere) and i think the jaggies got worse.
Regardelss to its graphical flaws, the gameplay is vastly improved, with a more stable targeting sytem, more cars (although retro instead of modern day) includion of motorcycles and helicopters, more engrossign story (compared to gta3 which was basically none, there is some tie ins for vice city now) and despite its vague sense of it being a lot alike, the city itself offers more uniqueness in certain areas, such as stores that you can go into, making up the the streets etc. seeming the same.
If you liked GTA3 you'll like this game, but you might not like it right away, it took me a day or so to get used to the new settings beforeI could accept them, but its an excellent addition to my game librayr.

oh my sweet merciful mother of god....

Just when you think they can't improve something, they do. This is especially true for GTA: Vice city. I LOVE THIS GAME!!! even more than GTA III. Anything that was wrong with GTA III was fixed in this. The main character speaks, there are more cars, motorcycles, the music is all licensed, the missions have more to do with the story, the characters are funnier, the ai's are better, once you beat the game, some of the gangs still like you and much much more. The weapon system isn't as fun since they removed the ability to turn yourself into a walking arms depot, but a chainsaw and a minigun fix that right up (scarface meets predator). The weapons you can choose from are vast and creative, ranging from screwdrivers to the ever popular rocket launcher. There are far more missions and even more unlockable goodies, so by the time you've finished unlocking everything in GTA III, you've barely scratched the surface of this one. get it now!!!

You can not compare GTA3 to Vice City

Seriously - it's a game. So it's similar to GTA3 - but what do you expect? Even considering the similarities it's still an awesome game in itself. I'd recommend it to anyone, even if you've got GTA3.

The Graphics are superb, the city itself is totally different to GTA3 - there's more detail for starters - and in Vice city you can purchase places to live unlike GTA3. You can also visit the mall if you so desire.

Cars - the cars rock - end of statement. What makes Vice city even better than GTA3, is the fact that you can drive motorcycles. Vespa like bikes, Super bikes, Hogs or Dirt bikes. It's fun - a total riot.

Music. Much has been made of the Radio stations. They are OK - some of the songs are good - some terrible. But you can't please everyone. Personally, I didn't like the stations in GTA3 anyway, so it's no big deal to me.

I'm still playing the game, and despite what some people have said, the missions are pretty good, and the story line is fun. In fact your character 'Tommy' even talks to other characters in the game - unlike GTA3.

Bottom line, I'd recommend you buy this game. It's a must have in any good games collection.

Rockstar has done it again

This is far and away THE BEST game I have ever laid eyes on. Same great play as GTA3, but with more. I was amazed at who signed up to do the voices. In addition to Ray Liotta doing you character's voice, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds and Gary Busey also do characters.
As for the music, it's vintiage 1980's and the CD set doesn't even have all the music that's in the game. There are even two, count'em two talk raido stations.
Everything about this game screams "PLAY ME". This game will go on for forever or unitl Rockstar comes up with the next GTA game in the series.

For once, a game that lives up to it's hype.

I avoided writing a 5 star review of this game 6 months before it came out, and considering the bulk of reviews here, it was a smart move. "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" is an excellent game, a worthy follow-up to part 3. Though the graphics and control are almost identical to GTA3, the game has a totally different feel to it. Players who played GTA3 to death will notice this right away.

Vice City is a totally different setting, with sun, sand, palm trees, with girls in bikinis walking the streets. Size wise, it is about twice the size of all of Liberty City put together, with more back alleys, shops, slums, and most noticeably, more diverse pedestrians. The same freedom of movement in GTA3 is found here, but in order to give players an incentive to do the missions, certain actions are restricted until they are "unlocked" by missions. Certain weapons cannot be attained, some properties cannot be purchased, and so on. And similar to GTA3, sections of Vice City are closed off from the beginning, and can only be unlocked by completing X amount of missions.

GTAVC is, like the installment before it, a story-driven crime simulator. But the story here is much deeper and more complex. The main character, Tommy, has a personality and a voice, unlike the mute killer from GTA3. The missions themselves are a lot more complex, and require more skill and timing. From the beginning, you know that you are doing more than courier missions. But between missions, it's your ball game. The game has 32 weapons at your disposal, but the system for carrying them is "class-based", which means that you can only hold one weapon of each kind at a time. For example, if you have the chainsaw but also want the Kitana, you must drop the chainsaw in order to pick the kitana up. In total, you can carry up to 10 weapons at a time. This makes things a bit more difficult, and a bit annoying at times when you run out of bullets, but it is a nice twist.

The graphics have been tweaked in areas, with better looking cars and more fluid character animation. The music is one of the best parts of GTAVC, with over 9 hours of licensed 80's tunes on 10 different radio stations. Sometimes, I just like to park and listened to music. Another addition I love is the addition of motorcycles, which handle much better than cars, and are much faster. The drawback there is that crashing it means enduring bodily damage. A few lingering problems with GTA3 have also been fixed, including the addition of an in-game map and the locations of the Amu-nation have been added to the on-screen map.

Calling GTAVC is retread of it's predecessor is unfair, since the is much more complex and challenging. In GTA3. You made money performing various missions, and moved from island to island, and cause mayhem, that's it. In GTAVC you can shop, rob stores, buy real estate, do the odd jobs (now including pizza delivery) and find the usual hidden packages and rampages. Overall, anyone who liked GTA3 will love GTAVC. Or did you even doubt it?

Fantastic!

It takes GTA3 and kicks it up. Nothing as innovative as GTA3, but VC adds in the things that were missing, like motorcycles, costume changes, decent music, and a grittier storyline.

Welcome to the 80s.

Last year one of the most anticipated games of all time made a big splash. Grand Theft Auto 3 dazzled gamers and fans of the series alike with its massive and real city, freedom to carjack and waste civilians at anytime, and its variey of missions and vehicles. Now the sequel or prequel of Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, has hit the stores. It's not a full fledged sequel, but it is a great improvement

1. Graphics
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is not the most impressive graphical achievement, it is no Devil May Cry. But it gets the jobs done. The character models are the same as in Grand Theft Auto 3. The hands look like boxing gloves and you can see the places where each joint is connected. But everything else is top-notch. The character animations are very fluid, carjacking has never looked so real. There is a great variety of textures in the city and a great variety of cars. There really aren't any loading times, except a long one in the beginning. Overall the size and scale of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City make the graphics impressive. But the game still is blocky all around.
Rating: 4 Stars

2. Sound
The greatest sound ever heard in a videogame, period. First off, the voice acting is all quality. Ray Liotta (Goodfellas, Copland) provides the voice of the main character, Tommy Vercetti. This time around you don't play a voiceless, boring criminal. Tommy Vercetti is voiced perfectly by Liotta, bringing the sort of coolness a mafia man would need. Second off, the music is incredible. Radio stations are still selectable and this time around there is a better selection. Choose from rock, rap, talk, new wave, and more. The music selection is top-notch and there is something for everyone. When you get tired of a station, just move on to a new one.
Rating: 5 Stars

3. Gameplay
Perfection, almost. The ability to kill civilians (sadistic, huh?) and carjack or more likely vehichlejack, are just so much fun. It never gets tiring. Now helicopters are accessible and so are motorcycles and mopeds. The new additions are just a blast to ride. The missions are always fun and challenging, this time the missions revolve around the main story more. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is twice as big as Grand Theft Auto 3. Vice City (Miami rip-off) is so much larger than Lyberty City. Now thare are buildings you can walk into like tool shops, pizza place, clubs, malls, and hotels just to name a few. Also real estate can be bought like clubs and apartments. This adds a dpth to the gameplay and gives you more save points. The only pet peeves are: the targetting sytem is still a drag and police can get annoying. But overall, this game is so much fun.
Rating: 5 Stars

4. Length
This is one long game. It will take at least 40 hours to beat. But afterwards it is still fun to hang around Vice City. There are so many side quests like finding hidden packages, stunt jumps, and rampages. Plus just getting into trouble is fun, but the chases by police are somewhat annoying. Plus trying to require all of the property in the game is a quest in its self.
Rating: 5 Stars

Overall this game has it all. It is very addicting, long, it has great graphics, impressive production values, great music and voice acting, and crime has never been so much fun. If you liked Grand Theft Auto 3, you should like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It is better in almost every way. Rockstar has put alot of effort in this title, and it shows. They must love collecting their paychecks now.

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

Now I understand there is some controversy about the violence of this game. It is true this is a violent game. But to believe a child playing a violent game will grow to be a violent person is ridiculous. Now I grew up in the 80's watching shows like the A-team, Airwolf, Knight rider, Miami Vice ect... On top of that I was an avid gamer. I have been "killing", "destroying", "bombing" people for well over a decade. So in conclusion of past expierences I should have grown into a violent person, but in truth its the other way around. Videogames are more of a release than that of an impressional idea placed into one's "head". So parents, yes keep this game out of the hands of "young" impressional children there are plenty of games for them that are simple to play and fun. Nintendo is the best way to go. Games today have a rating system just like movies and T.V. shows. I suggest you know them and stop making remarks of how surprized you were to find out certain games were violent ect...

The reason why video games were invented!
