DISAPPOINTED!

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 1 / 5

I normally don't play first person shooter type games because I don't have the quick gaming reflexes necessary to play such games and most games don't have effective ways of controlling your character/aiming & shooting. I took a chance on this game though because it sounded interesting. I couldn't get past the poor aiming and firing controls to delve deeper into the game. The voice acting for the two main characters in the game was really good and the graphics were pretty good, but I couldn't play the game for more than the hour it took to learn the controls and play a ways into the game. People that play FPS games a lot may enjoy this game, but it wasn't for me.

GLITCH OF DEATH

By the time I played the game it was already two years old so I already knew that there were going to be antiquated issues to deal with. What I didn't realize at the time was there was going to be the glitch of death. As I started playing the game I was hooked and the story line was pretty good. It kept me wanting to invest my precious time playing the game. Now to the catch. You cannot buy weapons in this game, only upgrades. As part of the story line you have to lose your weapons. It does not matter how much money you earn during the game, you can never buy weapons. You loses your weapons at least twice in the game. The second time you lose your weapons and I thought that the game gave them back to me and it didn't. I saved the game and there are no cheat codes or nothing to get your weapons back and you cannot buy new weapons. Well I had to fight an end boss without my weapons and there was simply no way to beat the guy without starting the game over. Too many other games out there that beat this game hands down. I chose to sell it instead of starting over again. Thanks for wasting my time activision. Buyer another western like red dead revolver instead, one that does not have this foolish glitch. How can you beat an end boss without weapons. This mistake should not happen in a game, but then again this is an activision game. If it weren't for this glitch and I could have finished the game it would have gotten at least a high three stars or four stars.

High Expectations

I had very high expectations for this game when it was released. It has been a long time since "Outlaws" came out, and it is time for a decent first-person Western to be on the market.

The designers said they were trying to capture the feeling of the Old West and listed realism as high on their goals list. They did okay on the first part, but missed badly on the second.

The storyline is good, with some twists and turns, but most of the characters aren't around long enough to really contribute much to the story, which is very short.

This game goes to the old-fashioned standby technique of making the major villians nearly invulnerable (or in one case, absolutely invulnerable) to any weapon you can bring to the fight. That is okay when you're dealing with aliens, but these are supposed to be humans.

The game saves are a bit painful, and don't always work exactly like they should -- when you load a saved game, you are often restored to a place in the storyline, not necessarily the location where you last saved or with the equipment and skills you had. Yes, the game is short, but if you have a bad restore experience you can wind up playing through several hours of it more than once.

Another major reality hit comes from the way items are handled in the game. You can pick up ammo (sometimes) from fallen characters, both friends and enemies but not the weapons. Oddly, the ammo is always the right caliber for whatever weapon class (rifle, shotgun, pistol, etc) even if the weapon description says it shouldn't be. There are many, many games out there that do this part better. New weapons are handed out by defeating major enemies; there is no store you can go to to buy a new rifle, a horse (you just steal horses and nobody complains, by the way), a stick of dynamite, ammunition or anything else. The only thing you can buy is upgrades.

This is definately not a game for kids. I'm not squeemish about blood in video games, but this is more graphic and pointless than most. Your character has the option of scalping people who're incapacitated but not dead. In fact if they are dead, the scalping option is gone. If you could sell the scalps, or if they were required to complete some missions at least there would be a point.

So this game was a pretty serious disappointment. If you've just gotta have it, wait until it is under $20 or so. In the meantime, you might give "Mafia" a try if you need a first-person shooter.

Very short and limited

This game would have been a lot better if it were more similar to GTA. I was looking forward to making my way over a vast area and maybe parking it on a high rock and picking off indians and other innocent people and animals with a broader range of weapons. The levels were a since to get through.

Oh well, maybe Gun II.

"It's over already?"

I'm going to keep this short because the game doesn't deserve a review longer than the actual game play. great idea, tons of fun, addictive, and SHORT. my only complaint, just when i was digging the game, i beat it. alittle disappointing, definitely worth $20, just make sure you have something else to do after you beat it.

my expectations were too high

Up until this game came out I thought it would be one of the best games this fall. Although it's not bad, it's just not what I was expecting. The gameplay is fairly simple. The missions pretty much just entail shooting whoever the bad guy in the area is, moving barrels, following a train...those I'm fine with. The story based missions are great in my opinion...very well written. The side missions that you do to boost your stats, to me, are a waste of time. Just the same variation of the same mission over and over. For instance, Pony Express missions pretty much are just picking something up and dropping it off to someone else. The item usually changes, but other than that, nothing special.

Graphics aren't bad. The cut scenes I was impressed with. Just looks like your normal PS2 game graphics. The controls are easy to learn. No big deal there.

Overall I think the game is okay, but too repetitive for my taste. I'm glad I rented it and didn't buy it, but it's worth the rental just to see if it's your thing.

Rented it, and was pleased, but

This game is just way too short. Everyone is right. I rented it and saw for myself.

The game takes place in the wild west, and it does a good job of recreating the feel of western movies. Walking around in Dodge is great, as it feels real.

The fighting in the game is fairly good for the most part. Once you get cooler guns it gets better. Also, if you ever feel mad you can go on killing rampages and kill everyone in town. The showdowns would be better if you could pick up shotguns and stuff off corpses, but you can't. It seems the creators want you doing the missions rather than killing random people.

The game suffers from length. It also suffers from some slowdowns. Occasionaly my game will slow down during a gun fight and I'll watch my health go down to zero.

The best part about the game is the story and voice acting. The game feels like a movie more than a game, and it's interesting to watch it unfold.

This is a renter, but absolutely not a buyer.

Totally a rental

I liked the idea behind this game and it's great to see horse-riding finally done well, but the targeting system while you're walking really sucks. The controls are something to get used to and still they kind of annoy. I'd be running someplace and have to make a turn, but if I don't use the right analog stick to turn the camera with my body, I'll be looking one place and running another. Grand Theft Auto it isn't.

I love the voice acting and the side missions. I played Texas Holdem in a bar and racked up a lot of cash - I'm a good player in real life and this version is scaled down for novices, so I got paid!

Nice graphics and though it seems free-roaming, invisible walls often stop you in your tracks if you run or ride too far out into the plains.

It's short too. If you want to just breeze through a game, pick this up at Blockbuster or someplace over the weekend.

Fun game but way too short

I would recomend this game to anybody who likes games that
only take 5 days to compelete if you like more challenging
games then this is one you might like some of the levels are quite a bit complcated and hard to beet otherwise if you like longer games that take about 2 to 3 weeks to beet you should find a different game to play.
