Sim City with seige weapons!!!!

If you like battles and are creative, then you will love this game. The graphics get an A+ and the game is so fun that it will hook you for hours. You get to make cities, armies, and more, but at the same time you have to be cautious with your rations, you only have so much stone and food. But, you can easily just harvest more supplies, making it so that your city never stops growing. And yes, there are exiting battles, conquests and explorations, too. If your parents want games that are educational, guess what, THE AGE OF EMPIRES II has tons of historical facts about the middle ages. In the long run, all these things put together make this a very cooool game.

BETTER THEN AOE III

AOE II is in my opinion way better then the 3rd. Even though the 3rd AOE has better graphics, the gameplay isnt as robust. AOE II gives you so much to play with. It's also amazing that this game is STILL going strong online after all these years. I just got into this game and it is HANDS DOWN the best i've played on and offline and im a huge RTS fan. Pick-up Command and Conquer Generals and Command and Conquer Zero Hour Expansion pack for a complete RTS warfare experience.

great game

Age of Empires II is much better than the first version. You don't have to check up on workers as much and the outlines shown for people behind buildings is a big help. The missions are slightly easier then the first edition and are much more fun to play as they incoporate much more of the history of each civilizaiton.

This is a solid strategy game! And alot of fun!

This game is alot of fun and the only thing that would probably make it better would be better graphics. I just bought this game and it's instantly an all-time classic. I noticed right away that it's copyright is 2001 and prior and that there is a new version called III available with an upgrade too. I do plan on checking that one out as well but for the money, you can't go wrong with this title. It's hours and hours of entertainment and my wife and I played it quite a bit. We're still playing it.

In it's own way this game is kind've like Stratego, which I think is an excellent board game. Like Chess it's kind've a perfect game. Chess would be the winner ofcourse but you get the idea. I give Age of Empires II Gold a solid 4.5 stars. I don't want to give it a 5 because there is always room for improvement. The graphics could definitely use a boost into the close to present. But the basics are there and it's alot of fun. It's a little hard making out the character icons sometimes but that could easily be fixed in version III.

The game has never crashed on my computer. And really this is very very similar to early Command and Conquerer as well as an earlier game called Dune. They all use the same gaming engine apparently. The trick is to be able to set up quickly and get a defense or offense going as fast as possible. The more you play it the better you get at that. Also, it's a series of battles that equals the war or objective. It's not usually won in one fell swoop, although sometimes it is.

This game will find itself in my collection from now on. It's just that much fun! And it's history lesson is fun too. I learned new stuff and had a lot of fun.

A real feeling of power

This game has me hooked! It's one of the few games I have that keeps me coming back. This is because of the fun campains and the great 1 player games. You can fight the computer, be allied with the computer, or have an all out war; the latter is my favorite. There also many difrent maps you can play in and many difrent types of games.

I keep coming back to it...

It's been years since I first played this game and fell madly in love with it. Newer games have come out since, but they just don't have the same appeal as AoE2 does. There is nothing cooler than this game, seriously. The amount of cultures it covers alone make me drool. You can be everything from Aztec, Mayan, Saracens, Korean, Chinese, Hun, Mongol... I mean seriously, they went all-out with cultural depth. I love listening to all of the languages the people speak!

The only drag about this game is that they haven't made a newer one that has the same nationalities. I wouldn't touch Age of Mythology because it cut you down to a choice between Greece, Egypt, or the Norse... sounds so boring in comparison. I love this game, even if it seems a little old graphics-wise by now... the gameplay has been tuned so perfectly, it's hard to think of anything to complain about.

Great Game!

This game is an Rts wonder (Real Time Strategy). You start small, Like Age of empires 1, and build and build. This game is addictive, with campaigns, tutorials and amazingly different civilizations. That said, I will also note the graphics are great, the sound is great, and this game (both Age of Kings and The Conquers) are well balanced, so skill means more than choice.

- About the addictiveness of this game. This game has triggered "Age Of Empires play dates" over multiplayer 4 hours each. (Very long game)

Should You Buy This I Guarantee You Will Enjoy It

I have a funny story that goes along with this game. You see, the regular Age of Kings edition of this game (without the Expansion which is SO much better and/or easier) was a birthday present for me. However, someone else got me the Gold Edition that came with the Expansion, and I got really happy. The bad news is I can't play multiplayer anymore because I lost one of the AOK cds. But that's another story.

The basic guide comes with the cd, but it doesn't really say the REAL basic things like "How do you make guys move" and "How do you make a building/unit/research". I think they leave that for the Learn to Play Campaign. To learn what I'm going to tell you, I watched the Celtic guy drone about how to move. I'm going to save you that by telling you how you do this.

Choose/move unit:
Left click on the unit you want to move or use. To move it, or make it attack, work, heal, or repair something right click the place or thing. To choose many units of the same kind double click on one, to choose many units of different kinds drag mouse across the area of units. Can only have up to 50 units controlled at the same time.

Build a building:
Choose a villager(s). You will see a commands menu in the bottom left hand corner of the screen with three signs, all with hammers. To build a military building click on the hammer-square that also has a sword, then click the building wanted, then place it where you want it to be. For an economic building press the hammer-square on the far left, next to the military building sign. To repair press the hammer-square with a masonry background.

Create a unit:
Click on the building that makes the unit. In the bottom left menu you will see pictures of what units the building creates. Sometimes there will be a technology or an upgrade there (see Researching Upgrades and Technologies). Anyhow, click on the the unit you want created, and it will start creating. It takes different units different speeds to be created (see Buildings, Units and Upgrades). When created the unit will appear outside the building that made it. With certain technologies a unit can be made at more than one building.

Researching Technologies and Upgrades:
To research an upgrade go to the building that makes the unit and press the button below it which will be the upgrade. I'll have a picture of the king of weapon it uses, or something to do with it, and if you scroll over like everything else it will tell you what it is and what it does (must have "Help" on for this).
To research a technology, go to the building that has the technology and click on the technology which will be like every other production in the bottom left menu. It will start researching.

Houses:
Yes an entire section on houses, which are very important buildings located in the villager's building menu in the Economic Buildings section. Houses keep up the unit availibility. If you don't have enough houses you're units will stop creating till you get new ones, and the population marking area will flash yellow.

Resources:
Like they did in the Middle Ages, you must have resources (chiefly food and gold) to make units and buildings. Their are several ways of getting food. You may build farms (in the economic buildings section), dig in berry bushes (use villager to do so) hunt deer and boar (boar attacks you) (use villagers to do so), herd sheep or turkey depending on your climate (use villager to do so), fish (use villager or fishing ship to do so), build a fish trap (use fishing ship to do so) or buy at the market. Gold you may get by mining in gold mines (use villager to do so), trade for resources (use trade cart/cog and ally's market/dock to do so), or get a relic (use monk to do so; to get relic locate it than use monk to get it and drop it off at the monastery. Getting all relics and holding them for certain time period means you win). To get wood, chop down trees, and to get stone mine for it in stone mines. Basically, you must use villagers for most of the work.

Civilization Archive--

AZTECS (new)--Specialize in infantry, monks. Unique unit: Jaguar Warrior (dressy infantry). No horses, start with eagle warrior.

BRITONS--Specialize in foot archers. Unique unit: Longbowmen (long range, powerful archer).

BYZANTINES--Specialize in defense. Unique unit: Cataphract (heavily armored knight). Has every military technology and upgrade, lacks strength in buildings.

CELTS--Specialize in infantry and siege engines. Unique unit: Woad Raider (speedy infantry). Good offense, try not to get into situations when you are besieged.

CHINESE--Specialize in archers. Unique unit: Chu Ko Nu (fast firing archer). Try to use wall superiority.

FRANKS--Cavalry civilization. Unique unit: Throwing Axeman (just what it sounds like. Not very powerful). Make as many knights as possible, then upgrade them ASAP.

GOTHS--Infantry civilization. Unique unit: Huskarl (archer-proof infantry). Make as many infantry units as you can.

HUNS (new)--Cavalry civilization. Unique unit: Tarkan (cavalry with bonus againt buildings). Do not need houses.

JAPANESE--Infantry and naval civilization. Unique unit: Samurai (fast attacking infantry). Make usage of navy quickly.

KOREANS (new)-- Naval civilization. Unique units: Turtle ship (slow yet sufficient cannon ship), war wagon (missile firing siege weapon). Take care to build towers.

MAYANS (new)--Archer civilization. Unique unit: Plumed archer (highly armored, fast and weak attacking archer). Make an economic empire.

MONGOLS--Cavalry archer and siege engine civilization. Unique unit: Mangudai (Long range cavalry archer). Also use Light Cavalry.

PERSIANS--Cavalry civilization. Unique unit: War elephant (slow powerful and hard to destroy cavalry with literal name). Do not use the infantry. It's useless.

SARACENS--Camel civilization. Unique unit: Mameluke (ranged camel). Raid, do not attack with umph.

SPANISH (new)--Gunpowder and monk civilization. Unique units: Conquistador (mounted hand cannoneer), Missionary (mounted monk). Take to conquistadors like heck.

TEUTONS--Offensive civilization. Unique unit: Teutonic Knight (slow yet VERY powerful infantry). Teutonic Knights are the best infantry, so I'd recommend great usage of them.

TURKS--Gunpowder civilization. Unique unit: Jannisary (more powerful hand cannoneer). Use not only every gunpowder building and unit, but also cavalry archers.

VIKINGS--Infantry and naval civilization. Unique units: Longboat (Fast warship), berserk (infantry that slowly regenerates health). Sail a lot.

This game has great graphics, and it deserves a GREAT round of applause for being the funnest computer game I've ever played.

the best
