Everquest is a great game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 5 / 8

The tech issues that many people complain about are really not that bad. I run the game fine (admittedly, with many options turned off or low) on a 350mHz PII with only 72mB RAM. And my modem connects at only 31.2k on average. The game is still very enjoyable and not choppy or laggy.

As far as the other people wrecking the experience? I read a couple of other reviews stating that the game was just a big playground for obnoxious kids.. NOT TRUE. There are quite a few kind and mature players, and there are very merciless policies in place for those that abuse the system.

Outside of all that, Everquest is easily the most fun RPG that I have ever had the pleasure of playing. There are many race/class combinations with very realistic in-game affects, and the expansions only add to this.
The only reason that I don't give five stars is that to make to the game look really pretty, especially with the expansions, the system requirements are pretty high-end. The game is still an excellent RPG without the graphincs set to their max; very enjoyable...

...I have been playing this game for 2 years and I'm still as addicted as the first day...I run on a 450 MHz 320 RAM 12.6 GB and 56k and i barely ever get lag or go link dead. I tried DAoC when it came out, and ya know what? It [stinks]. Don't buy it. It's fun for the first 5 hours, then once ya get to lvl 5 ya gotta go traveling all over just to find something to fight. in EQ i can hunt from lvls 1-14 in Misty Thicket with ease.

Thumbs Down

I bought this game 1 month ago because I got sick of Diablo II. Finding out it has the same faults as Diablo. The makers are changing things constantly (usually for the worse)& the value per time played is just too low. These makers need to realize there is a line in escapist fun between realism & ultra-realism. If a game is "too realistic", i.e. dying really screws you up (EQ), uber-equipment is next to impossible to find even after playing for 2 years (DII), then where is the "escape" element? People play these games because the time & effort to receive pleasure from the work involved is so low compared to trw. After playing for 1 month I realize the fun received has not been worth the effort. 40+ hours of camping & corpse recovery = level 8 druid wood elf. And reading the other reviews here I see it is only going to get worse. I just got Age of Empires the Conquerers & I am playing awesome entire camaigns in less time it takes in EQ to make 1 level. And I find the company's treatment of customer feedback just plain offensive. Well I have just ordered Silent Hunter II & my vibes are its going to have a high play value also so I am canceling my EQ account. Companies that rebuke their customers should be boycotted. I only hope these companies learn their lesson for Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft. I and a lot of people will not be playing these MMORPGs anymore until these shortcomings are addressed.

Horrible, I would not recommend it to anyone....

As the newest expansion pack came out, SOL (shadows of lucin or Sh!t outa luck), Verant inc forgot 1 thing. They forgot to put it through QA. If you have an "older" computer... forget EQ. Not only do the people who spent hundreds of dollars upgrading their computers to play EverQuest, but also the people with high end machines are all having much difficulties logging into the game. And if you are lucky enough to enter "Their World" after a 10+ hour patch which seems to happen on a daily basis, most likely you will lock up within 30 mins into the game.

If you survive all that a new set of problems occur. Frame rate issues are at the top of the list and lag issues come in a close 2nd. Most of the new spells in game do not work. The graphics and textures are bugged. To zone from place to place takes 5 or more mins. To log out of the game takes about 15 mins or you can reset your machine. Simply put, you need a computer that can handle world war 3 to play EQ without any problems.

Verant inc is trying a new product stratagy. They make YOU pay to beta test the game. Cool huh?

If you dont believe me then goto their own public tech support message boards. (...) Sad sad game. I do not recommend you getting stucked into their world....

If you still end up buying the game, good luck. May the EQ gods grant you the power to never need Customer Service. (...)

I wanted to say that this game was perfect for me. It's not like the games you, buy, conquer, and toss. You can enter Norrath and it's your own little world, you can do whatever you want. I am very drawn to the game, but I am not totally geeked out to it. I play about 20-30 hours a week and like spending time getting my trade skills improved and figuring out new spawns in places I've never been before. Even though I am not at one of those very high levels, I still very much enjoy the game, even if I can only have an hour to play it. I give my full and honest recommendation for the game, as long as you don't get too drawn in to it. It will only become your life if you let it, please know all the good things that you might lose from playing this game. Search for my new character on the Zeb. server on the continent of Faydwer. Hail me and I'll give you lots of stuff, just to help you out. And I also recommend buying the RoK Strat Guide. It really helps for a quick and easy reference when you are playing. Good Luck! And may your time in Norrath be well spent.

The best game ever!

I have been playing video games since I was 3 and this is the best game I have ever played. However it takes a long time to learn everything and it's not for someone who only has a couple of minutes to play every day. This game is a community, every race and class has special abilities that contribute to the community. For example, wizards and druids can get other players to where they're going faster than anyone else, warriors protect the wizards and druids, but clerics heal the warriors. Then enchanters can make magical jewelry that increase stats when you put them on, and gnomes are the only race who can use the skill called tinker. And, as with any other community it has criminals and jerks. But, luckily, the game also has police, the GM's (game masters) and volunteer guides. So, let me say again, do not buy this game if you have a strict schedule, do not buy this game if you only intend to play a few minutes a day, but DO buy this game if you want to have some of the best gaming experiences of your entire life.

I love it!

Yeah, this game is fun. Sure its fun when you start out. You think its a whole new world ahead of you...but its not. I cancelled the subscription to this game after about a month. You can have up to 8 characters, and they can be any class and race you wish. There are ogres, humans, elves, etc. And their classes are things like wizards, warriors, rogues, and that. It will really remind you of mythology because of their spells and stuff.

Its what people always do, they train and gain a few levels and get some cash from their enemy. Then they go buy some new weapons/armour/potions. They train till a certain level so they know they will be good enough to go out far through the everquest world. Sure, they are strong enough but they expected more. Tons of cool abilities and/or spells and items that makes it look cool like you see on trailers. But they dont get it. They train and train and accomplish nothing just like some other people are saying. Thats why I got rid of it.

If you want a good fun, action/adventure online RPG that is way more fun, then I'd suggest // Dark Age of Camelot \\ I have that game and it is what I expected. Its what I call *fun* ._.

EQ is not a slash and slay game, for kids!

I've Been Playin EQ for almost 1 year. and yes its addicting, it takes disipline not to play it to much. and yes occosionaly there is a snot nose kid that doesnt want to take the time to learn how to play the game. However if you like rpg games this is it! Dungeon & Dragons on Steriods for the computer. Most of the players are very mature, kids usually give up around the 5th or 6th level as soon as the game starts to require you to think and return to playing Quake. The game is a social game you have to make friends (with REAL PEOPLE), form groups & work as a team in order to advance your charecter. Are these not skills that most people need everyday in REAL LIFE. Is this game a wast of time? I dont think so, for the cost of going to the movies once a month, its better than watchin TV. (just try not to forget your family and friends, hehe)

Pros & Cons & Loss

Yes, I will admit it, this is a good game. I played it for eight months and eventually lost interest.

Reasons for goin' frigid?
1) I remember one of the first times I was playing this guy shouted - or whatever the exact term is, I can't remember - over the entire area that he had just leveled to 60 and was feeling very depressed. The reason is that when you invest time and energy into something something virtual that energy can't be used for something that's real. It's like preteen girls wasting their time on infatuation because it's the closest they are to true love. Except --- Most people have the option of leaving EQ and actually living their own lives.

2) I know a guy who was kicked out of college for never going to class and using the T1 line for EQ. He is now living in Texas and has a job solely to support his addiction.

3) Not impressed with the artwork/graphics/extreme polygons. (Although the textures were great)

4) I don't want to live there.

5) Neverwinter Nights. Pure friggin' ecstasy.
