Great game;but the story is starting to fall apart....

Before I start my review,I want to make it clear that I have played LOK:Defiance all the way through to the ending.I have also
played through all the other blood omen/soul reaver games. But I have to say,the story just leaves the player with more questions.
The few that are actually answered don't really make much sense.

This story is just not that good anymore... It's become so complex, that it even goes against it's own storyline.(WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD)To start with, when is this game taking place? Is it after soul reaver 2?Playing through Raziel's walkthrough,I would say yes.Because he awakes in the underworld after being consumed by the reaver. But then why is Kain trying to break into the Sarafan stronghold in the begining of this game?He was already IN the stronghold with Raziel.

There are even bigger mess ups as the game progresses.Janos Audren is perhaps the biggest mistake in the LOK timeline.I understand that he was killed by Sarafan Raziel before the events in Blood Omen 1,and he is resurected by Raziel with the Heart of Darkness in this game. But between those two time periods
there was Blood Omen 2,to which Janos appeared perfectly alive and well.Again, how is that possible?

The other deal is with Moebious. In blood omen 1,Kain beheaded Moebious in a village. So I understand Kain and Raziel went back in time, and that's how they speak with him in this game. But at the end of this game,Kain impales him with the reaver. So if Kain killed Moebious in the past, then how can he be alive for Blood Omen 1 to be beheaded? This legacy never even bothered to explain how Vorador magically came back to life in blood omen 2,after being executed in blood omen 1.

The problems with these kinds of stories involving time travel,
is that they end up tripping over their own histories.I also never really understood how Raziel is Hylden;it just sort of threw that out there on a whim. The whole Hylden/alien race seems kind of dumb to me;they belong more in a sci-fi story than one about vampires.

The game itself is extremely fun,the graphics are beautiful and the voice acting is superb. But unfortunatly, they've just dragged this story out too far for too long;and now it's starting to collapse on itself.

this game will own your soul

you get to play as both raziel and kain. action will seem to influence this game much more than the others. you will switch characters after each level. kain has all of his old powers. kain's levels start in the sarafan stronghold as he seeks either to kill moby or find raziel. raziel's levels start in the underworld where the elder god has trapped him. janos will be back. i got all of this from someone who was lucky enough to play a demo of the game in germany. the game will also seem to cover the deleted material that was supposed to appear in soul reaver 2.

Now we are talking!

Finally, a new Legacy of Kain game. Sure the story doesn't make sense but hey play the others and you will understand. People always consider that Blood Omen 2 was part of the story line but i figures that how can it be so, it's patheticly dumb for a game but defiance stays with the whole plot! BO2 just made another plot that makes no sense. Now this is a real game!

Great game!

Defiance is an absolutely amazing addition to the Soul Reaver and Blood Omen series from Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Interactive! I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the artwork, the lush environments and the seamless special effects this game has to offer. The Cinematics are skillfully animated and I've never heard better voice overs in a game, EVER!

I also really love the way you get to play BOTH Kain and Raziel in turn as you progress through the game, keeping things even more interesting as you get to witness each character slowly decipher their intertwined destinies as the story comes to a climactic ending. Both characters are extremely fun to play too, as each of them gains special moves making the already great combat system even more fun!

I highly recommend this game to anyone, even if you haven't played any of the Soul Reaver or Blood Omen games since there is PLENTY of story to fill you in on the details as you play along!

Excellent combat, great plot, this game keeps me going.

This is probably one of my favorite games of all time. And the best game in the 'Legacy of Kain' series too!

Players play as both Kain and Raziel and follow each characters' story through Nosgoth, and through time. The way the two stories are so deeply intertwined is awesome! At first I was a bit confused, but as the plot unfolds (a bit slowly), I became entranced with this story!

Combat is incredible. The amount of attacks, and variety of choices makes combat really fun and unique. Telekinesis is by far the coolest thing ever introduced in combat. From the start of the game, Kain can launch an enemy in the air, send him flying over a cliff, catch him before he falls, and telekinetically suck his body back for a brutal beating! And not far into the game, extra attacks are earned like a mid-air bounce attack, where Kain or Raziel smack the opponent into the ground that they bounce back up in the air only to be juggled again!

I've played this game for 10 hours now, and I must admit in a few places I get lost, and travel through the same area's quite a lot. But that's only a problem because I'm impatient to see what part of the story will unfold next! Each level and room is so incredibly drawn and rendered, I stop just to look at all the artwork that was so meticulously set. The amount and quality of architecture and inventive sculptures in this game is breathtaking.

This was really bad

I rented this game and wow it was just as bad as the others (LK's)were good. Bad camra angles, bad play through system, and what happend to all the cool stuff you got in the last games. Don't buy this one!!!

It's a very good game but if you like Raziel OVER Kain you're gonna hate it.
The plot is ok, the answers of all the questions leaved by the others Legacy of Kain are there but...
All the others reviews tell about the gameplay and that's right the game is great, the puzzles very intrincates but easy an logic only the final for Raziel who doesn't deserve it.
I think Crystal and Eidos do that to take back the history to Kain.

NO Doubt, BEST GAME EVA!

Okay seriously, I thought Halo was the greatest game I ever had, then i bought this, this is like the greatest game that the world has ever created. it's such a large improvement from the slightly dissapointing Soul Reaver 2, I mean, i thought at first, that this game was too easy, but the first two levels were just practice, cuz once I did Kain's second level, i was amazed, so many enemies, so many puzzles, blasting people with telekinesis, and sucking blood from 20 feet away! Fricken AmazinG! Raziel's levels aren't that great, but they keep the game flowing, so get this game, it'll be a hell of a ride.

Not great

I wasn't very impressed with this game, yet it is much better than the Soul Reaver 2 game. I don't think they've captured the complete entertainment of "Soul Reaver, The Legacy of Kain." I didn't care much for playing as Kain which didn't make much sense to me. In certain levels Kain and Azriel pretty much do the same thing which seems too repetitive. This is definitely a rent before you buy game. It balances on, some will REALLY like it, and others will think it's OK.

the end
