Great Graphics, Great Cutscene, HORRIBLE GAMEPLAY!!!

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 1 / 1

I played this game for maybe 40 minutes before asking myself, "what's the point?" The game is non responsive, un logical, and completely boring. I will say though, the graphics are AMAZING and the opening cutscene is maybe my favorite cutscene of all time.
Anyways, I'm trading this in for a PS2 copy of RE4 today, and I expect most people will want to do the same.

Incredible Experience, better than File 2. (OFFLINE REVIEW)

The day I purchased Resident Evil Outbreak, I thought I knew what I was in for. I had previously bought and played Outbreak File 2, and not only did i suck at it, I thought the scenarios were too long. After hearing many people say that the first game surpassed the sequel in every way, I decided to give it a chance.

I was in for a wild ride when I put that disc into my PS2.

Graphics:
The graphics in REO are great. They are really detailed, and stuff such as fire and water look really realistic. Zombies are as detailed as...well, as detailed as zombies should be. I noticed a few clipping issues, and some minor graphical blemishes, but not much else. For the most part, these graphics are beautiful, in a Resident Evil sort of way.
*9/10*

Sound:
Sound in this game is a mixed bag, indeed. The little music that there is tends to enhance the overall atmosphere of the game. The sound effects
such as zombie moans and gun shots, are realistic and great. My gripe with the sound, however, stems from the character's speech during play. When you hit the ad-lib button (or one of your AIPCs decides to use it) they will say something. However, this "something" and what shows up on the screen as a subtitle rarely match at all. Some voices, such as Jim's, are very annoying. Also, the things the characters say sometimes sound out of place, and just plain inappropriate. It seems as though CAPCOM added more swears into this game in order to make it "worse". This is the first game I have ever seen the F-word used in.
*7/10*

Gameplay:
This game is set up in a very strange way, but somehow, it works out very well in the end. When you begin the game, you will have to pick a scenario (there is only one available at the start), a character, and a difficulty level. As you play and beat each scenario, you will unlock th subsequent scenarios, until all five are unlocked. Besides all featuring the same characters, each scenario has almost nothing in common with the next, so don't expect mush of an epic story. When you finish a level, you are ranked according to criteria, such as your time, events completed, people surviving in the end, and so on. Depending on your rank, you will be given a certain amount of points, which are used to unlock rewards, such as BGMs, new costumes, movies, and other secrets. This game is also online compatible, but since I cannot play online (damn dial-up) I can't really say how that works out.
*10/10*

Control:
Not much to say here. Mostly normal RE controls, with the added ability to use regular control (using the left analog stick). Works out great in my opinion.
*10/10*

Replay Value:
With over 200 items to unlock, 5 scenarios to complete with 8 characters on 6 difficulties, you have over 240 ways to play this game. With online play, this game could go on forever, but even offline, there's at least 200+ hours of quality gaming on this little disc.
*11/10*

Graphics: 9/10
Sound: 7/10
Gameplay: 10/10
Control: 10/10
Replay Value: 11/10

**OVERALL: 10/10**

Rent or Buy? Definitely buy.

It sits on the shelf.....

Never thought I would feel this way about a Resident Evil game, but I'm disappointed with what Outbreak had to offer. How I yearn for the days of RE 2 and 3! Come back Jill! There are a few good points that come to mind with RE Outbreak. I can tell you that I really enjoyed the aspect of playing as relatively "average" characters and not someone with tactical combat experience. It makes you consider what a real human would do in such a situation, despite how ridiculous it may seem. Perhaps we may never fall victim to a zombie infestation, but making our way through the game as an everyday person gives us something to easily relate to.
Overall I have been plagued with the saddeness that this game does not feature a single, long story line that follows all of the characters. Maybe we could have followed four of the characters in the first chapter, then one of the characters decides to split up, meeting up with another character. From there, we could help these two characters survive through a short ordeal until they meet up with two of the other characters... something like that. But this doesn't happen! Instead, there is a choice of several scenarios, of which there seems to be no connection between one or the other. They all stand alone and obviously support the online concept, but does nothing for the single player, offline, who would rather just have a good, solid storyline that takes us through the lives of these "average" citizens as they make their way out of Racoon City.
Loved the idea of playing the part of a soft- spoken student or an unconfident subway worker. Hated the absence of a good, solid storyline. We don't get the feeling of "My name is 'so and so' and this is my story". Instead we get "what if this happened?", "what if that happened?". Breath life into these characters!
Purchase it for the online/multiplayer function. But as for single player... it just isn't satisfying.

What a frustration

I'm not a big time reviewer, the only reason I'm writing this to tell you how much this game SUCKS! While being a BIG fan of RE series from the very first one, this one is probably the worst one I've ever played. I've finished all RE series (except Code Veronica), and now when I have RE Outbreak, I just can't force myself to even complete a single scenario... The worst thing IMHO is that you can't carry more that 4 items at the same time... Yeah I know that you can give some stuff to your partners to carry, but those morons usually lose (or change to some other item) it and if it's key or some other important item, you'll have to look for it (might find it, might not). Also, your partners don't listen to your commands and they mess up everything, you have to chase them down in order to help them if they got attacked, etc. The other bad thing is that every time you go in a room, kill all the enemies and come back there, they pop up again exactly how they did the first time and guess what - you have to kill them all again while your ammo is rapidly depleting. There's even some monster in the 3-rd scenario that can't be killed and the monster shows up in every 5 minutes in any room you are in, so either you have to avoid it (a chance to get hurt), or to shoot a lot to make him fall for a sec to get away - notice that there's NOT a plenty of ammo in the game. The controls are the same as it was in the very first RE, I think they could have improved it, for example to add the ability to actually move while you shoot and attack. The last but not least is the time it needs to load between room to room - it takes forever... The game overall might not be too bad (the graphics and sound are not too bad, not a big deal though), but for the fun I'd rate it 0 or even -5 if I could. The bottom line - this game is really NOT worst playing and that's what I'm doing, I'm NOT playing it (jeez, I can't believe I'm saying that), just waiting till the next big thing comes out!

Awesome game with problems of course...

(...) I did play the game, and I will give you an honest review.

Is it good? Yes. It is a good game. Resident Evil Outbreak involves you journeying through 5 scenarios as 8 different characters. You choose your character in each scenario and the replay value is high from this. The characters have different abilities and special items which makes them interesting. They also have their own voices and such.

There are problems though. One, when you use square you will talk. You will hear your character say something while seeing text on the screen that is completely different. For example, my character may say "Find anything?" while the text on the screen displays "Hey, did you find something?". This is kind of confusing as sometimes characters say things like "No" and the screen displays the text, "What's going on here?". It is kind of retarded that Capcom couldn't make the text the same as the spoken words.

Another problem is Outbreak. In singleplayer, the outbreak bar is nothing more than a timer. This timer can only be slowed down and does nothing but make you move faster. It is kind of boring when instead of exploring I am forced to move. It isn't too bad at times but in others, like the last scenario, it can be a pain.

One reviewer talked about communication problems online. You can ask for items and say a different commands. You can also offer items to teamates or suggest they use an item. It is easy and you can even ask the AI in singleplayer for their gun. They are generous usually but have personalities and will not always give things freely.

The game has a good sense of action. There are zombies all over and there is enough ammo to kill a ton. The zombies sometimes appear randomly in weird places. I was in an underground facility and crossed a place I had been 3 times. The third time a zombie showed up. This was retarded as there was no way he could have gotten in there. Zombies will follow you into rooms now along with your AI buddies. That's cool though.

There is no story really. The characters talk to each other sometimes but the cutscenes don't involve characters talking to characters ever. This is kind of bad as the scenarios could of shown you different character's perspectives on things and how events occured through other player's eyes. Take Kevin for example. Kevin may do a monologue in the end of each scenario but as for inside of the scenario? Nope! I don't even know how Kevin knows Mark's name or Yoko's name because they never really talk about it. They only say things like "Find anythin" or "Hey!". I really expected more character interaction and more story development in Outbreak but I was wrong.

The load times are long when starting up a scenario. They can also be long when opening doors but you quickly get use to it. They aren't too bad though and don't hinder the gameplay that much. There is a way to cut them down but it requires a PS2 hard-drive disk.

As for any other things to note? There is a weird pause glitch. Sometimes when zombies hit you, and the outbreak gauge appears, the game will pause for 2 seconds and have you baffled. This happens frequently at this one boss. This boss is a boss that you can't avoid the whole scenario and will screw with you so bad. You will enter this big hallway thing and the boss will swoop down and go to hit you instantly. Instead of being able to dodge, the pause glitch will kick in and the next thing you know... you were just poisoned and sent into caution mode. That may sound confusing but you will know who I am talking about. Capcom should of delayed the game ANOTHER week to fix it but they didn't.

Crests, jewels, and cranks have been pretty much removed. Keys are still there but not as moronicly as other games. The other RE games had you finding jewels and crests just to access the bathroom. This game has less of that.

The save system has been changed. Scenarios only last about an hour now. You CANNOT permanently save during a scenario. You can create a temporary save which is slightly weird. If you see a typewriter you can now save the game, but have to exit. Once you try to reload the game you are given a screen saying "Either resume your TEMPORARY SAVE or select no. If you select yes your game will be resumed and you will destroy the temporary save. If you select no you will DESTROY the temporary save and be sent to the scenario select screen." Basically they have made it so if you resume the game you can't continue from it later. You can re-enter the game(if you accidentaly decided to resume your temporary save because you didn't want to delete it) and access that typewriter, and resave it, but you have to exit the game again. So you can't really save during a scenario. You can only temporarily exit it. If you select no the temporary save will be erased forever and you will be sent to the scenario selection screen to start a new scenario.

This game has it's problems. They've cut down on crests and jewels, but still make you find keys. They've made it fun though in certain parts when you and some buddys get to cut through the zombie ranks. I'm all for that. I'm also for the graphics now. Don't worry about those crappy non moving backgrounds! The camera now pans around with the character and there is less off-screen zombies popping up.

Not bad...C'mon it's RESIDENT EVIL!

The game is....well it's pretty good...However...
Loading time: HORRIBLE.
Difficulty: At times: OVERWHELMING....

I love Resident Evil. Anything Resident Evil. This is a great game...If only it had a quicker loading time and a "VERY EASY" option...hahaha I almost beat it though...It took me about 5 days. For me and RE, that's BAD.

Online: I haven't tried yet, probably won't be able to for a while.......

Decent game, however.

Crazy Not to love it!

This game by far is the most awsome game to ever come froM the Entire R.E. series! I mean thik about it all the other R.E. titles we plain and dull. They try to cover it up with a new story each time! I mean dosent that geat boring after a While? The new direction that they have headed with this new R.E. Title is a good step in trying to break away from that same old gameplay all us harcore fans are used to. The only thing that they are trying to do is keep up with these newer games out there that are supporting online play. I mean you have to admit that the thought of kicking zombie butt with your friends is cool.

The game owns, zombies own!

I love pretty much anything that has to do with zombies, especially games that let me a cap a few. I don't know where people got their information but I haven't seen ANYTHING that confirms a monthly fee for this game; Not on the company's site, and not here. So as to the naysayers of this game I say, sit down (...).

Outbreak

(...)I'll try my hand at it. Outbreak is an ambitious attempt to bring Resident Evil online and it does more right than wrong. The game starts by allowing the player to choose one of eight different characters each with strengths and weaknesses. Then the player chooses a scenario(only one is available from the beginning) and is placed with up to 3 other players online or 2 AI controlled player in single player.

Immediately, the player will notice some changes from other Resident Evil games. First, the inventory and map screens don't pause the game any more. Therefore, if you are getting attacked and hit the inventory button to use an herb or first aid spray, the creature doesn't stop beating you down. Second, zombies can now come through doors, up stairs, pretty much anywhere you can go. It also seems a lot harder to die in RE:Outbreak. Everyone is infected with the virus right from the beginning. The meter goes up consistantly and can go up faster if you are being attacked or hiding from zombies or are hurt badly. However, the only time death occurs it seems is when the meter reached 100 percent, even if your health meter is at danger(this seemed to only increase the rate at which the virus spreads). When online dying makes you a zombie for a few, offline it ends the game. Finally, Capcom added a cool bonus that works sort of like Marvel vs Capcom 2. Once you complete a scenario(whether by dying or finishing it) you gain a rank and points to spend in the collectables section to unlock goodies such as extra costumes and movies.

The game looks nice, but not quite as good as the Gamecube versions of RE. In fact, if Nintendo didn't have such a bad policy about online games this would have probably been ported to the Gamecube instead. The sound is average, the music is what you what expect from RE, and the language is what you would expect from Manhunt or The Suffering, which is kind of cool for the older players, but will probably give some 12 year old's mom a heart attack.

The negative side of the game seems to be the atrocious load times, which make the game almost unbearable at times. The HDD supposedly corrects this so if you have the hard drive, this may not be a factor. Also the controls are pretty complicated, but with a little play time I was able to figure out what I was doing, just don't make your first game an online one. Overall, the game is blast with just a few shortcomings that detract from the overall experience.

fantastic! the RE game fans have been waiting for

RE outbreak is quite simply the resident evil that fans have been waiting for. the game DOES NOT have an on-line fee for those of you wondering. The game re-traces the events of re2-3 only this time it's through the eyes of ordinary citizens. If you are new to the RE series, this is not the game for you however(try RE1 for game cube) for a number of reasons. one being the story line, and another being the over-all difficulty of the game- this is one of the more challenging resident evils. If you are a fan you will easilly recognize familar locations, items and monsters scattered throught the game, along with the story line. this is mostly a clasic RE game with a couple of changes(i.e. zombies break down doors and are faster, the game does not pause at the invintory screen, you work in a team- not solo, and oh-yeah...IT'S ONLINE!), which, in my opinion greatly increase the game's difficulty, realism and over-all suspence. As most people know, the big deal about this game is that its the first RE thats online, but if you don't have Broadband or OL for your ps2, don't hesitate to try out the game, as the one player game is just as good(if not better) and packed with TONS of replay value, including pictures, stills, fmvs, extra outfits, difficulties, new scenarios, and other little extras that fans will appreciate(newbies might not find them as cool though...). In short, this is a game that features a diverse cast of characters, an awesome story line, plenty of susspence, lots of re-playability, and a neat online function. For those that say that on-line communication is bad, it simply adds to the experience. If the game featured voice chat(instead of ad-libs) people would just talk about daily things, not the game. By doing things the way they did, Capcom created an "online resident evil," instead of a resident evil game with "online chat"
