Resident Evil Outbreak

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3

This new game from Capcom has met all my expectations. The first online Resident Evil game is extremely well done. The Resident Evil Outbreak graphics on are top notch and the cinemas in it are done well too. On your team you get four people, and they add to the supense of the game making little comments the whole way. The game does not play from start to finish, but merely it plays per scenario, which is an excelent way to make your way through. Not having to worry about ink ribbons is always a good thing. One on the greatest aspects is that you may choose from eight different characters, each with their own specific abilities, to help you get through the perilous missions. So what makes this Resident Evil stand out from the rest? Well it would have to be that in the single player mode you play for points, in order to buy movies, costumes, pictures, and sounds, which make the replay value on this huge. Also, each character has their own story when going into each mission, so there are lots of possibilities for playing this game. The other thing that makes this RE unique, would have to be the fact that you can turn into the zombies if you are infected for too long, so you may end up turning on your teammates in the end, for some nice juicy brain. All in all this game is amzing, graphics, errie sounds, team help, characters, you name it this game has got it. It is deffinetly a good buy for vetrans of the Resident Evil series, or new comers who want to join the online gaming community. I recomend this game to everyone.

Disappointing

I had heard negative things about this game, so luckily I rented it before I bought it. I have played all the Resident Evils, and this is the only one I was not happy with. FYI, I did not play the game online, so my comments are only from a single-player point of view.

The vibe of this game just isn't the same. The zombies aren't particularly scary, just rather annoying.

I also hate having other people following me around. They get in my way, and I am responsible for their well-being. I'd rather just look after myself.

The biggest downside for me was the length of time between scenes loading. It takes a ridiculously long time just to load a single room. Once you leave that room, the previous area has to be loaded again as well.

Overall, this game just wasn't worth it. I can't imagine having the patience for the loading times whether or not I was online. That alone would discourage me from playing.

Same old RE, brand new problems

Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed playing the early RE games, but Capcom has let technology and gameplay innovations pass by their long-running franchise by several generations. Having played the beta version of Outbreak, I can only conclude that the long, gushing review posted on here was submitted by a Capcom employee. This iteration of RE has all of the old problems and quirks that have been around since the very first RE on Playstation: ridiculously long load times whenever you open a door, clunky controls, slow-moving and slow-turning characters, static (though nicely rendered) backgrounds, horrible camera (you'll die from off-screen enemies more often than in any previous RE game), and the worst inventory management interface ever.

But now you also get a whole brand-new set of poorly-designed problems available online! It starts with the web interface to register your login ID and password online. This has been provided by Access! Japan, which some of you may remember also provided one of the Dreamcast web browsers. Guess what? They haven't improved anything since then... It still feels like Netscape 0.1, with scroll bars and pull-down menus and broken-image icons while the page is loading. This just doesn't look right in a console game. Capcom, at least check out Planetweb for your next web interface -- their browser has been used on other console games without mangling the feeling of playing a game on a console instead of feeling like you've been dumped out of RE and into Netscape 0.1 running on a 286 PC. From there, you'll enjoy online gameplay with up to three other strangers (there's no match service or lobby to play with your friends). Oh, did I forget to mention that not only is there no voice support (hey, Capcom, it's 2004! Get with the program!), there's not even any *text* support! That's right, while playing the game, you'll be limited to a handful of button-triggered phrases to communicate with your fellow survivors. The only place you can even use a USB keyboard is entering your login/password. Good luck planning a strategy with your teammates using only L1 and directional buttons! Oh yeah, and now when you need to piece together items for a puzzle (or even collect ammo for your gun), if someone else gets to it first, you'd better hope they're extremely generous, or you're just out of luck. While cooperative gameplay can be great fun, in practice it *never* works with people you don't regularly play with. And since there's no way to play with anyone of your own choosing, well, best of luck getting someone else to hand you ammo for your gun when you can't even talk to them or explain what it is you want to do! Also, you will need to turn the brightness up on your TV monitor, since the backgrounds are so dark, you can't even tell where there are walls or blocking objects unless you do so.

Overall, this is a frustrating, clunky, derivative game that is several generations behind other online games and offers no new thrills. If you've already played RE 1, 2, and 3, then you've already played the best this franchise has to offer.

Ok, 5 scenarios and thats it! Prepare for a game that provides no overall theme or story! And its all over after 5 scenarios! Wouldnt waste my money buying!

Better than Resident Evil 4

Look at the screen shots, it looks more like Resident Evil 2 and 3. Those were the best Resident Evil games. The gameplay picks up where Resident Evil 3: Nemesis left off with tons of zombies lurking around the streets. The game takes you back to Raccon City. I bought a GameCube for Resident Evil, but now I'm selling my GameCube. I thought RE was GameCube exclusive, but I guess not. This game has a city crawling with Zombies, blood, fire, mutants, and some fresh faces. So what if you don't get to play and Leon Kennedy. Plus I'm pretty sure RE4 will end up getting ported to PS2 eventually. GameCube is basicly a dead console, I don't like Nintendo's chances.

This game is going to link a lot of the RE titles together. There will be several playable scenerios, and 8 characters to play with. Best of all you get to turn into a zombie. Not that that is a good thing.

This game has impressive graphics, but it's unbelievable how many hold times there are!!! Every single time you change a room, there is a hold time. I felt like I was waiting half the time and playing the game the other half. I actually want to play more of this game, but I don't want to deal with waiting every minute or so when I have to go into another room. Get rid of the countless hold times and this game is great. They should have put more time/effort into this game.

I have been a a big fan of the RE franchise for a long time, and reserved this game when I heard it was coming out. A still think it was worth the money, but it isn't perfect.

PROS
Graphics are clean and detailed.
Many chrs to choose from makes replay value high.
Feels more like a real survival game with limited ammo, handmade weapons, and unique chr skills that help you on your quest.
Fairly decent voice acting.

CONS
Camera still not adjustable!
VERY challenging and can get confusing at times. You may want to get the guide to help you out.
Load times between rooms are way to long, though annoying, it still doesn't distract too much from gameplay.
Trying to control AI chrs in single play can get pretty annoying.

I haven't played it online, so I won't comment on that.

Needless to say, this game has its ups and downs. It's solid enough in offline mode or online mode to keep you interested, and it is definatly much more challenging than most other RE games I've played. It may not appeal to everyone, so many might want to rent first before they try it out.
