Pleasant Surprise

It seems that many games based on moves, cartoons, etc. seem to be quickly and sloppily produced, hoping to be sold entirely based on their license, so I am usually wary of these games. But Scooby Doo 100 Frights was a very pleasant surprise. I saw a video of the game and thought it looked kind of cool, but rented it to try it first. I loved it so much that I bought it so I could finish it and unlock everything. It doesn't offer too much innovation as a platformer game. It's your basic run around, collect all the scooby snacks, kill the monsters, and earn the obligatory secret moves, like the double jump and super smash. But the graphics are awesome, the control is pretty decent, and if you are a fan of the old cartoon, this is a must-play. It has all the classic monsters, some classic scooby moves, and even an in-game laugh track. The voices are great and true to the characters. My main complaints were that you had no control over the camera, which could sometimes present a problem, and I wish there had been more cut scenes to make the game more of a story.

This is definately one of the better, or should I say best games for Playstation 2 so far!! THQ does a fantastic job of bringing the original characters to life, voices, laugh tracks and more! You also hear famous voices like Don Knotts, just like in the original Scooby Doo cartoon!

This is not an "easy" game nor is it a difficult game to the point where you get frustrated, it's just a fun game for everyone! Whether you are a Scooby Doo fan or not, you will thoroughly enjoy playing this game! It's loads of fun for everyone!!! Go Scooby!!

I love this game, at first I was somewhat afraid that it would not be what I expected, and since it's a new release there are few reviews about it. This game has very good graphics, it has the original voices from the cartoon, it's very much like in the cartoon. I also like that it's not exactly "just for kids", teens and adults would feel challenged too, and of course, it's perfectly safe for kids, Scooby just gets "scared", never killed. It's definitely worth the money, and most certainly you will need a memory card because this game takes time to finish, probably a week. For instance I purchased Virtua Fighter 4 (which I love too) and finished it in one afternoon, all levels, with Scooby it took a while. Have fun!

I guess the other reviewers of this game who gave it such a high ranking may not have tried to play it all the way through to the end. BEWARE, just over half way through there is a section called "wreck on the deck" which will cause anyone but the most die hard game fan to give up and simply throw this game back in the cupboard forever. My kids have given up on it and so have I since this particular jumping section requires nothing short of nanosecond timing. If you don't believe me read the walkthroughs at Gamespot where it took one dedicated gamer over 50 attempts to pass this section. Save yourself the frustration and avoid this game.

Especially for a huge Scooby Doo fan, like myself, this game is a lot of fun. The graphics are excellent. The environments are huge and varied. There are numerous references to various Scooby Doo episodes, including a large number of "villains". Scooby Doo can perform characteristic actions and does characteristic things to defeat and evade villains. It really feels like you're "playing the cartoon" (albeit as 3D computer graphics).

However, there is one flaw that keeps the game from being a 5 across the board--there are quite a few sections that are incredibly difficult--too difficult in my view. Difficult enough that you'll throw your controller across the room, curse at the machine, and have to repeat a section a good 30 or 40 times if you want to pass it. Of course, we don't want games that are too easy and that we can complete in a few hours. But we also do not want games that result in hours of frustration repeating the same section over and over and over with little apparent advancement in our ability to get through it--many people simply give up on this game at various points. It's arguable whether this title is aimed more at kids or older nostalgia hounds like myself (I'm middle-aged), but certainly kids will be attracted to it, and later sections of the game will be just too darned hard and frustrating for them. More than likely, parents or older siblings will have to try to complete many of these sections for children.

The game is basically a third-person platformer. The environments are often 2D, but they tend to be very cleverly "disguised" to always seem 3D, with various barriers and changes in whether you can move Scooby left and right or upscreen and downscreen. The objective is to work your way through various levels and sublevels (I believe there are at least 80 sublevels), collecting Scooby Snacks, defeating constant "monsters" (who usually engage in simple repetitive platformer actions), collecting "clues", and finding and rescuing the rest of the Mystery Inc. gang. There are also the requisite boss fights, which are more challenging, but remarkably, no boss fight, except for the last, is as challenging as some "normal" sublevels.

There are three main environments--a big, spooky mansion (which looks just like the one on the title sequence of the original series), leading eventually to secret dungeons and laboratories; a set of seaside docks, small villages, businesses, shipwrecks and such; and an extensive hedge maze which eventually leads to a series of cemeteries, crypts, and so on.

Scooby can walk, run, jump and swing from suspended objects, like chandeliers. As you play the game, you gain more abilities, such as double-jumping, two funny "stealth" modes, two different kinds of "smashing" abilities, items that will make walking on tricky surfaces easier, an umbrella to enable limited "floating", and additional "weapons" in the way of bubble gum and soap bubbles.

As with any good platformer, the challenges arise with figuring out the patterns of environments and enemies as well as figuring out just how to use your abilities to navigate and defeat them. Although even the beginning levels are challenging at first, they are achievable once you get used to the controls.

The problem with some later levels is a combination of the environments being overly complex and you having to perform very specific actions with very precise timing and positioning--jumps, smashes and such can be nearly impossible unless you have Scooby facing an exact way, in an exact spot, and push a specific sequence of buttons at exactly the right time. As if that weren't difficult enough, there seems to be something of a randomizing factor in whether you'll be successful on particular tries. Sometimes the exact same controller manipulations by you will work, sometimes not. There are at least six or seven "sublevels" that you'll find yourself having to perform at least twenty times to get through, and occasionally, you have to perform very long sequences of difficult actions successfully or start over from scratch, at the beginning of that sublevel. Making it worse, you often have to go through four sublevels until you can save again. If you make it though three difficult sublevels and have to stop playing and turn the machine off, you're out of luck--you have to do it all again later. Even most early sublevels will require at least three or four tries to get through, but three or four is acceptable (fun, even) and what we expect.

Making the game a bit more challenging (although in a pleasant way) is the fact that you'll have to revisit all sublevels at least once (especially if you want to collect all Scooby Snacks and such), because there are things that are impossible to do, and rooms/sublevels that are impossible to get to, until you attain later "power-ups". Another flaw, perhaps, is that sometimes it's not clear what you need to do. There are puzzles to be solved and items to be attained that are less than obvious, and you can spend a lot of time walking back through sublevels (you can always access all of the sublevels that you've played already) aimlessly as you try to figure out what you're supposed to do next--the entire game is something like a maze, or one huge puzzle. I had to use a walkthrough on the Internet to complete the game. I'd suspect that most people will need to do this. It might be a good idea in future games like this to include a "task list", which at least gives the player the next (and past) puzzles to be solved or items that can be attained.

But even with these flaws, for a Scooby Doo fan, this is an incredibly enjoyable, addictive game (at least when you're not screaming obscenities at your PlayStation and the game creators during the difficult parts). You'll want to play it again just to experience the environments. But if you're thinking about buying it for a young gamer (under 10 or 11, say) who is not particularly a Scooby fan you should probably think again, as I can almost guarantee that the game will be abandoned, unfinished, in frustration.

I just started playing this game the other day. Originally I bought it for my wife who is a big Scooby Doo fan. I thought it's a kids game; no problem. Well the first day of playing about 6 hours, I was 50% through the game. Second day of playing 4 hours, I was only at 57%.

Things I liked:
They did a really good job of bringing the cartoon to a game. All the same comedy, site gags, monsters, and laugh track. They even have some big name voice actors. The game does get progressively harder as you make it through the levels and the levels are big!

Things that I didn't like:
The camera angles work against you. And I mean big time. The only other complaint I really have is that you have to keep going though the old levels as you get power ups. They try to make up for this by putting warp gates in all over the place, but with how many levels there is, there is no way to remember where you need to go next. And I haven't seen Scooby Dum anywhere.

Hold on a second. You recommend Stitch?! That game is worse than watching Bob the Builder for 5 hours, no offense im not trying to kick anyone's backside thats just what I feel. If you enjoy playing good games, get this one. It's one of the best games I've played for PS2. Its very similar to the cartoon except more exciting. If you enjoy platform games get this. Theres nothing bad I can find about it. Its flawless. And they make every little detail exactly like the cartoon. It brings back memories of waking up on Saturday and running to the TV to watch the Saturday Morning Schedule lineup. Yep, the good ol' days. The storyline is great and actually makes sense, unlike some other games that don't have purpose for doing certain parts. Its every bit worth this review. It one of my favorite PS2 games out of 19. Don't waste your money on boring games. Get this game.

A VERY GOOD GAME!( Read this if you have the game)

This one of the best games I have ever played. Anyway for those of you who can't read the whole thing to get the tip, I'll give you it now : For those of who think after you have beaten the "black knight" and think you have to go on the sunken ship after you have defeaten him, then you are wrong. You do have to go to Smuggler's Cove after you defeat him but you have to go to a place called "Creepy Crawlies in the Hallies or Hallways. (I forgot what the last word was) To get there you have, you must go in a lighthouse. ( You'll find it at the end of "going witch way") In the lighthouse smash the button and the light will start going up. Race your way to the top and smash the light. In the light, there is apower-up called the "lightning bolt". Go back down the stairs and find a place on the floor that looks like very week wood. Do a spinning thunder smash on it. From there you will go down and when your there, look for a scooby snack gate. When you have gotten enough scooby snacks, you will be at the place I told you to go to after you have defeated the black knight. Look for a room that has Shaggy in. From there is a door (not the one that is so high up which is impossible to get without the soap" invention) that is on the top left cell. But to open that gate you must free Shaggy. In the room there is another invention. When you got it go to the haunted grounds. From where you got the helmet, go to there and don't go up the hill. Go to the place where the witch is ( I'm still talking about the same area you got the helmet from) and go down there and there will be a switch. You will know what to do from there. After you have defeaten the "Green Ghost" You will get an umbrela. You should know what to do after that.
Scooby-Doo: Night of 100 Frights I think is a game for people ages 4-12. It really is a fun game. The story begins with that Daphine's friend Holly said that there are are strange going ons and that Holly's uncle Proffessor Alexander Graham has been kidnapped and it's up to Shaggy, Scooby, Velma, Daphine, and Fred to stop the person who is behind the crime.

This game is fun but to hard in some spaces

Hello,
I have had this game since the Spring 2003. My husband and I been trying to get through it and he is 94 percent done and can't beat mastermind. I am stuck in the sales that you have to bounce to the next sail to get to the other side and then go back and bounce to the other sails. We also had trouble with the all scares upstairs when you have to jump from a bed and onto the candle lamps to get to the other side. if you don't make it then you have to bounce on the bed on the buttom and onto the platform and it bounces back. Another area we have trouble with is the flooded area. if you don't wait until the water brings the boats that sinks up where u jump you get a few blind spots. Other then that the game is Awsome. I hope they made a night of the 100 frights part 2 because its awsome.
Is there any pointers that you can give me?
