Life changing!

Lets start off by saying that I'm NOT a fan of computer games. Usually that is. Before I played Baldurs Gate I had never really been into anything other than nintendo and that was when I was 10. Then one day I saw a friend of mine playing BG at his house and I did show a tiny bit of interest because he told me it had this "middle ages" feel to it. Then I thought nothing of it. But one day he came to my house with the game and literally forced me to install it on my own computer and I did, and well, a few days later I had stopped calling my friends and stopped going out on weekends. This was just a few weeks before BG:2 Shadows of Amns came out and my boyfriend bought it for me almost immediatly.

Well, as much as I had loved BG and let my life revolve around it, the fact was that SoA had even more of an effect on my life. When I started playing it I dropped out of school, talked about nothing else and well, turned into this weird recluse that no-one wanted to be around anyway. But it was worth it! SoA gave me the best time of my life, lol. I have a collage degree now but it took me longer to get it thanks to BG. And I'm fine with that. SoA is without a doubt the best game of all time. It is magical. I don't care about graphics and such stuff, all I care about is the storyline and the charachter and BG is definitly better than any book you could possibly read (and I've read thousands so I know what I'm saying here). Since I finished it I have played most of the Black Isle games too and I love them all but this one is the best - I just bought BG and SoA again since I was always lending mine (trying to get people to play them, and some just didn't want to give them back) and I guess after 8 years it will be wonderful to live this adventure again!

This game is on my list of "reasons to be alive"

Older game, still very much to be enjoyed.

Baldur's gate is a great game. It has been out for a while, but still today the game experience is very much enjoyable. The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the graphics, being a little outdated. But, this shouldn't disincourage anyone to give it a try because the gameplay is really good.

The way Dungeons and Dragons RPG's should be!

This game is by far the most enjoyable and consistently entertaining game I have ever played. The plot is interesting and engaging. The game play itself is very interesting and complex enough to keep you playing long after you've finished the game. It allows a choice of turn-based or continuous play. It does not have the polyhedral 3-D graphics of recent games. That is good because I hate polyhedral 3-D graphics. It has 2nd edition instead of 3rd edition D&D rules, and has a random character stat generation procedure. This is good because I hate 3rd edition D&D rules, and I hate the point-buying system that recent games based on D&D use. The number of spells and items is far greater than in more recent games. It also has a great advantage in that you can make a 6-character party using either the included NPC's or characters that you generate yourself. This game is accessible to those who have never played D&D before, but complex enough for veteran players to enjoy it immensely. There is a vast amount of free player-developed mods available for this game. I have played BG2 for years and still discover new things about it every time I play. If you're into watching the latest three-dimensional rendered object bounce around, you won't get why I like this game so much. But if you're the type who loves to play games for the strategy involved, you'll see why I like it. The other reviews are pretty accurate about Throne of Bhaal, as it is more like a power-gaming expansion and has less plot, but I loved it anyway because it was a new game using the same engine and rules. I wish somebody would make more games using this engine or its equivalent. The gaming industry is much poorer for having abandoned it.

Very Delicious

Ok i got this game along time ago, but the disk broke (second) so i ordered this and this game + expansion is a must have for rpg lovers. I can personally say from experience that i enjoy this game more than i do Neverwinter Nights wich i have aswell. Pick this game up as it is a must have.

Worth It For Anyone Who Hasn't Played BG Series

Not quite sure what the other guy was talking about. Baldur's Gate series runs fine on Windows XP so long as the instructions are followed.

Anyway, this does in fact contain the BG2 collection, again not sure what the other guy was talking about. BG2 and it's expansion ToB defined what it meant to be a CRPG. It's the game all CRPGs are compared to, and single handedly revitalized the CRPG genre. Any fans of CRPGs would be doing themselves a great disservice by ignoring the Baldur's Gate series.

An Old Standby

I bought this game back when it came out, got rid of it when I got bored with it, then came back and bought it again. Needless to say, I won't be getting rid of it again. Baldur's Gate 2 has a very thoughtful storyline, some great customizeability, and some interesting challenges.

For games of its type I'd give it a full five stars, but I'm more a fan of multiplayer worlds where you actually interact with real people, and the storylines are never canned. So, compared to stuff like that, it's a 4 in my book.

My two cents, for what it's worth. :)

A Seriously Underapperciated Game

I'm very picky when it comes to games, but I found this one to be one of the top RPGs I've ever played. While other games at the time were branching out to MMOs and hack n' slashes (see diablo 2 and neverwinter nights), Baldur's Gate went back to the roots of what a RPG is.

This game is based off dungeons and dragons role playing, turn by turn style, BUT it does not play like a turn by turn game. Battles are fluid, and unless you turn on the auto-pause feature, you probably won't realize that a turn has gone by. This is what makes this game a successful adaption of pen and paper RPGS in the computer world.

Now be aware, this game is not for everyone. If you are looking for an online game, this game is definately not what you should buy. BG has online capablities, but from my experience it is incredibly lacking. Also, this game is not a hack and slash type game. You can't just walk around killing everything in sight, there is a storyline to follow(Well a couple variations of a storyline). If you're looking for a straight up hack and slash game, go buy Guildwars.

Let me list everything in a pro and con list, since I know most people won't bother to read the actual review.

Pros
-Strong Storyline
-Low system requirements
-Several different class types (including dual class and multi class and even sub class)
-Several Different races, each with their own advantages
-The ability to pick up NPC's into your party OR create a party of 6 custom characters if you go through the TCP/IP mode or multiplayer mode.
-Several different quests and side quests, with rewards that vary depending on your class.
-A wide array of weapons
-Hundreds and hundreds of spells
-Fluid game play that appeals to more than just DnD nerds.

Cons
-Very weak multiplayer
-Limited replayablity for most people.
-A bit easy (but at the same time you are able to set your own difficulty)
-Old Graphics
-As with most RPGs, this game is a little slow at first.

over all this is a very fun game which I do recommend and it is a shame this game did not get more recognition

Great Collection

This collection is definitely worth your time if you don't already have BG2 and ToB. For those that have played the original BG and TotSC, this will allow character imports, and adds many advanced rules from AD&D, such as character kits and fighting styles. Anyone who enjoys in-depth RPGs and/or AD&D 2nd edition should pick up this collection.

Still one of the great games of all time

New technology, desire for on-line play and changes in interface preferences (less overhead point and click of several characters) have led to substantial changes in the later games produced by bioware. Nothing against the later games, some of which are excellent, but BG 2 still stands out as one of the great games of all time. The graphics are excellent and the story moves well. Further, there is a strong range of NPCs to choose from and lots of excellent subplots for each that the player can follow.

The depth of the story is perhaps its strongest feature. This is high fantasy at its finest. Continuing from BG I, the story follows the player as a Bhaalspawn, with great potential for good and evil. Players can choose which trach to take and which alignment they want to associate with. Want to be a Paladin paling around with a good cleric/wizard? Can do. What to be an evil theif with an evil mage companion? You can do that to.

The depth of the maps of the game are excellent, though in a few places you can get stuck because it is unclear what path is available. The game also includes several great improvements, like the character getting the chance to own a keep with its own special quests, based on which class you have.

The Throne of Bhaal addition brings the game to a great creshendow. I don't want to give up too much, but other planes and the possibility of godhood are in your future if you play through to the end.

The truth is, though I love the new games, I still go back every once in a while to play this one.
