If you haven't played this title...

...you were in the 'Nam during the late 1990s or else you only recently got into computer RPGs. Seriously... this is the computer RPG to end all computer RPGs. Fallout and Fallout 2 were cool but you can only control one guy at a time: cool for its time but no so great now. Planescape: Torment is probably an even better game in terms of the characters and the story, but it's kind of weird and, well, the game engine is based on this one. That leaves this guy as #1.

It's pretty standard Dungeons and Dragons. What sets this apart from, say, Icewind Dale and up with next-generation RPGs like Jade Empire or Knights of the Old Republic is the way that each character has his/her own story. You'll find yourself engaging on all of those little side quests just to make your characters happy. To me, that's a good thing. Sadly, since this is an American RPG and not a Japanese one it lacks creepy androgynous characters and gigantic swords (there are big swords here, don't get me wrong, but they top out at about 6 feet in length rather than 20). Still, if you haven't played this yet - and I do not believe you when you say that - it's a great game.

Great game

This game is huge, and can take a really long time to complete...but that is a good thing. I don't get to play very often, and I found the newer journal system to be much more useful than in the first Baldur's Gate.

A Great Game

This is, without a doubt, a great game. It's improved greatly - the on screen graphics look much better. I don't really like the new "paper doll" figures though. I also don't like the new world map very much...
But, other than that, I like this game. The battle system is still the same, but the new spells are nice. There are plenty of new items to get, to be sure. Among the most notable are the Katana and other "ninja" type swords. You are also in the position to get Sarevok's sword, very early on in the game.
Make sure that you explore every place, not just every place - but every single blackened corner, it's very important that you do this - there are many trinkets that you'll find useful.
If your computer was able to run BG1 without any problems, you'll be able to play this game on it too. But you may want to add more RAM if possible, as the game will run rather slowly on older machines.

If you liked the old Ultima games you will really enjoy this game. While not as good as Ultima, the game is still excellent. My only complaint is not with the game but with Amazon.com. The game came without any manual or instructions. The game continually refers to the manual. The game is simply not complete without this manual. I will not buy another game from Amazon.com

....Its all in the box, my friend.

Everything you had ever wanted from and RPG is in this ... box you are looking at now. Sure, youre probably thinking right now "O great, another RPG fan.." but let me tell you something; I started off with RTS games like AOE:II and have never crossed anything that has ever been better than that for three years, until now. I heard about Baldurs Gate from a friend, and bought BG: Dark Alliance for the Gamecube. I beat it in three days ... But it gave me an amazingly good taste of the RPG genre. I bought BGII: The Collection and, well, got hooked. BGII:TC was a slap in the face, literally. I only got it yesterday and can tell you this little helpful bit of info, BUY IT! The game graphics are a healthy dose of eyecandy, even your mouth would love to lick it. Stunning enviroments, great lookin' spells, and everything else you would expect a five-star game would have. It is nearly endless.(And I stress the word "endless.") There are points in the game that, if you defeat the headmaster of a guild, you can become its leader, and bring in a bathtub full of sparkling gold coins that your Uncle Harry would bother you about straight to your grave. Ther are also amazingly detailed cities that you can travel to, with a house full o' dungeons and dragons (Sound familiar?) to explore on your way. Even the AI NPC's are too humoures for their own good good, for being, of course, not real. I wont have enough room to fill in my one-billion word list that the game has but before I go I want to tell all you slayin' blood thirsty gamers out there that, if you are interested in the best RPG to date, dont pass up this offer. End.

Lot of value for the money. The only issue is at higher levels it gets a bit hard to control all of the characters.

Very playable and fairly easy to learn; perhaps a little constrained in what you can do, but a nice balance of characters and styles. The graphics are a dated but the action is good and the story line -- as far as I have gotten -- is interesting.

Unmet Expectations

The Baldur's Gate Infinity engine really shows its age as you squint at poorly animated, hideously ugly graphics. Graphics do not make a game, of course, but they can help. Here they don't.

Nor does the actual gameplay. Again we're presented with the quasi-realtime combat of the previous Infinity engine games, with nothing improved. So it's just "see enemy, click mouse, wait until battle is over" gameplay again. If you're a spellcaster, you might actually have a useful spell or two this time around, but even if you do, all that means is that you simply keep clicking your "quickspell" button while your little avatar does a two-frame dance. The AI for your allies, as always, is horrendous. Unless you have far more patience for poor gameplay than I do, you'll be tempted just to let them all die and play solo so that you don't have to keep them from doing the most idiotic of manuevers or from wandering off on their own.

The storyline is overblown and melodramatic in the worst possible ways. I felt no connection to any of the characters in the slightest, as every situation they found themselves in was so cliched, so predictable. Alas, the sole redeeming feature of the game is the solid musical score, but that can't carry the game alone.

the ultimate collection has a major problem. it asks for 5 disks to install it and there are only four that come with the set! it seems the manufacturer of the CD's tried to compact it without adjusting the program. so it doesnt run without making changes to the programing. what a crock. if you want me to buy your game it had better work correctly!
