Great fun!

Piloting a star fighter is fun and this game does an excellent job of throwing you into the action with a minimum of training exercises. The game also defaults to the "easy" (but not "very easy") skill level so that us non-veterans can actually play and get through the levels without being pounded mercilessly. As a result, after a short learning curve, and discovering when to hang back a little from the action and when to charge in, you can enjoy this game without the $200 force-feedback joystick serious space/flight-sim players probably purchase.

On the other hand, it's such a hoot, you might find yourself wanting to invest in some hardware.

The graphics are still wonderful, with huge battleships throwing massive particle beams at each other through lightning-charged nebulae and the pacing and mission difficulty curve is quite fair except for one spy mission which is rather harsh. For the easily frustrated, you can skip (at least some) missions if you fail them five times.

The only qualm I have with the game is its adherence to aerial dogfighting physics. And it's a minor qualm. But when someone is pouding on your tail with missiles and lasers, it'd be really nice to do a 180 and give it back to 'em. Can't do it in an airplane, but there's no reason you couldn't in a spaceship.

Oh, yeah, and I can't say I'm impressed with the storyline. Yeah, it's better than the first one and, no, it's not really all that important, but I haven't found myself particularly involved in it. And your character is basically a pawn in a much larger game, and the real stars of the story are remote to you, at least at first.

Another =commendable= touch is the way the characters in the game change their reactions to you as you progress. It does give one an impression of building a prestigous career. This draws you in more as time goes on.

Simple Controls As Well As Great Graphics And Sound: Wow!

Freespace 2 is in a world of its own when it comes to excitement in video games. The most enlightening aspect of the game other than the sweet graphics, sound, and controls are the voice overs done during the combat sequences. Its great to be given orders by other pilots during some missions and its great to hear other pilots tell you when they are taking heavy damage. It has been attempted before but has never worked so well. All those little extras add to the realism and heighten the level of excitement. You feel as if you are actually part of a flight team trying to protect the transports or making an attempt to take out the larger than life enemy aircraft. With a touch of a few buttons on the keyboard you have the power to rearm your spacecraft, give orders to your flight team(wingmen) and do a number of things like increase your engine strength, shields, or guns.(A gamepad or flightstick of some kind is definitely a plus) The storyline keeps you involved by making mission performance affect the the following missions. According to how well you perform in earlier missions it determines where you wind up later on.(Realism again) Trust me. Turn out the lights, crank the resolution to 1024 * 768, and turn of the volume. Prepare for a feast of action worthy of its acclaim as Sci-Fi sim of the year. Buy it now or buy it later but just buy it!

This game can't get much better. Solid storyline that ties in well with the previous FreeSpace1, good graphics and sound, large battles. Multiplayer support is excellent, added to the normal Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch is the most robust Coopertive mode ever to hit games. The full featured mission editor, while complicated, is VERY powerful. There's many good missons and even some campaigns completed by fans. Its rather too bad that this game is unavailable from Amazon at this point. Interest is still high, but apparently sales support from the publisher isn't.

"Sci-Fi Sim of the Year" is an understatement

If you love the action space sim as much as I do, hold on to your hats because this game vill blow it off! I got "Star wars X-Wing" several years ago and played it hard. Back then, it was the top of the line. Now, with the great advances in graphics and sound, realism and 3D effects are minimum standards- without these qualities, a game is doomed to fail in the market. Freespace2 goes a little further though. There are multidudes of fantastic ships and the missions are well designed and though you have clear objectives, expect the unexpected! As for the sounds, narration and voices of characters, Interplay and Volition have really got the goods! They have even gone so far as to get some good voice talent - Robert Loggia (Over the Top, Big), Kurtwood Smith (Dead Poets Society, Star Trek: the Undiscovered Country, That 70's Show), Ronny Cox (Beverly Hills Cop I & II, Total Recall) and Stephen Baldwin.

Play is fast and furious. The large captal ships have a devastating "beam" weapon that cuts through about anything and even flack guns!Fighters have superb array of energy and ballistic weapons and are fun to fly. A couple of great features in flight are a toggle that automaticly targets enemies and matches speed. You can even customize your Heads Up Display! Your flight skills do improve with each mission and you can earn medals and rise in rank!

I have played a few other games like this and this one ranks near the top.

If you play games like "Tachyon : The Fringe" or other mission oriented games, You will love this one!

Freespace 2: A Mind Blowing Epic

I have played many, many games, but none have captivated me as Interplay and Volition's Freespace 2 has. This game can hardly be considered a game, more of an interactive epic. I will say that Freespace 2 has mind-boggling graphics as well as awsome music and sound effects, but this above-average rating is not the reason why it stands as the best game I have ever played. Frankly, the plot line is brilliant. The plot sticks to basic human principles and ideas of what a good story is. Freespace 2 is not, by any means, a "shoot em' up" game. As well as an awsome plot, every aspect of the game is well thought out, especially when it comes to names. The idea of the enemy as the "great destroyers" and the "great preservers" is taken directly from Hindu beliefs, as shown in the name of the enemy, the "Shivans" (from Shiva). All names are taken from mythology, whether it be Greek, Egyptian, or Hindu cultures. Many games are plainly ill-concieved and shortly-made. It is obvious, however, that the Freespace 2 team spent many laborious hours creating their masterpiece, and I commend tham for that. As for you, the readers of this review, take my words to heart. Freespace 2 is a solid investment, not only to bring hours of fun and excitement, but also to enlighten your ideas of humanity our place in the universe, and the eternal battle between good and evil.

Sadly.. still is the best

The only competence is Starlancer and Freelancer.. but still they don't enough good.

Stunning graphics (even for a pc for 2004). Luckily you can use max resolution, max details.. (the game need only a pentium-2 but now everybody have a p3,p4 or athlon!).

Also it run without problems in XP.

this new space sim by interplay and volition is probably the most perfect sim i have ever played. there are over 50 missions, as well as some special assignments that you can chooose to accept or decline. the story line is simply amazing. there are huge advancements in spaceship technology since the last game. there are some really huge ships that completely dwarf your own ship. there are some difficult missions, but having to wait another day to find out what happens after you beat that difficult level is really suspensful. my suggestion to all of you fighter sim fanatics is to get this game. it is simply the best.

Freespace 2: What Wing Commander was destined to become

with a simplistically presented yet compelling Single Player story of the same epic scope of FS: The Great War. The game play is superior to it's predecessor and same genre games of the day. The missions are fast and intense. The single player story is loosely linear, not living up to The Wing Commander franchise's standard, yet as engaging. At the end of each mission you are left with a thirst "what happens next".
The action is intense and will get your adrenaline pumping, which is as it should be.
Volition wisely included a mission editor and Mod support within the game structure which has served to keep the game on the shelves longer than is typicall for PC games.

Excellent game, worth owning, if only to be able to play the fan based mods and missions available for download.

The Best Space combat sim ever (In My opinion)

The game completely absorbs you in the action and the drama of the second war between the GTVA and the Shivans. The dramatic scenes and the close combat attacks make this one of the most thrilling games I have played. The game offers many challenges from; Trying to pilot through a nebula with virtually no sensors, to fighting against capital ships 100 times your size with beam cannons that will tear your ship to shreads. A combination of great graphics and detailed cut scenes, the game offers a challenge for every fan of space combat simulation.

LOVE THIS GAME!

I've owned this game since it came out (I had Freespace), but I just haven't reviewed it until now. Shame on me. This is quite possibly the best game I've ever played, and I DON'T EVEN LIKE SPACE SHOOTERS THAT MUCH! This game is graphically amazing, it's challenging, the AI is great, there are lots of cool weapons and enemies, there is a good plot, i can play it well with my crappy joystick, the controls are incredibly simple, like something out of a Freespace 2 for Dummies book, and there are lots of cool dogfights and explosions. If you don't have this game, BUY IT! I URGE YOU! If you would consider this game enough to look at this page, BUY THE GAME! You won't be sorry!
